[Bug 1720519] Re: Module "module-switch-on-connect" should be loaded once at most. Refusing to load.

2017-10-03 Thread Daniel van Vugt
pulseaudio 1:10.0-2ubuntu3 does only load that module once. So it sounds
like some other config file is getting loaded with it in your case.
Perhaps Kubuntu-specific? Can anyone with this bug search their /etc and
~/ and find out all the locations where switch-on-connect is loaded?

[Bug 1720684] Re: Bluetooth speaker used the HSP/HFP profile by default rather than the higher-quality A2DP profile

2017-10-03 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Bluetooth audio and profile selection is actually the job of pulseaudio,
not bluez (surprisingly).

Also, A2DP has always been preferred over HSP/HFP but the availability
and detection of A2DP has been historically buggy. So the selection
might not turn out as you hope. AFAIK fixes for this already exist in
17.10 and in 16.04:

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio

Unfortunately it seems 17.04 has been neglected in this area. Although
to be fair 17.04 is also end-of-life soon:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases

Please try live-booting the latest 17.10 image and tell us if that has
indeed resolved the problem for your hardware:

[Bug 1720695] Re: Two different icons for sound volume

2017-10-03 Thread Daniel van Vugt
If upstream went to the trouble of designing different icons it was
probably intentional.

I guess at least one argument is that the icon in the panel bar changes
to show the current volume, whereas the icon in the menu should be
static to represent "volume" in general rather than reflecting the
current volume.

So I think the design makes sense. Low severity, and probably "Opinion"?

[Bug 1721135] [NEW] Z LPAR 17.10 install: Failed to start Login Service messages on first boot after installation

2017-10-03 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Installation initiated from the HMC using 'Recovery --> Reload from
Removable Media or Server' to select the FTP server and installer. The
menu selection 'Daily --> Operating system messages' is then used to
drive the installation until prompted to log in over ssh to complete the
installation.

Once installation completed and the system booted for the first time,
'Failed to start Login Service' messages were perpetually printed to the
console. See attached logs.

After a second reboot the failure was no longer present.

[Bug 1721182] [NEW] restart on shutdown or suspension

2017-10-03 Thread Ligny C
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS
Release:16.04
Running on an Acer Aspire E1-470 Laptop.

After a fresh ubuntu installation the power off command didn't worked as
intended, neither the suspension function, neither the shutdown command
via terminal.

It appeared to be a problem with ACPI controlators, sadly, editing on
/etc/defaut/grub on the line
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi=off" also disables wifi and
networking in general.

The solution was to remove "acpi=off" and instead using, on /etc/default/grub
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi_osi=Linux"

[Bug 1707831] Re: [enhancement] Replace the "Activities" label with the Ubuntu icon/logo/glyph

2017-10-03 Thread Jesse
I respect Jeremy's (and other Ubuntu devs') positions that the GNOME
documentation refers to the "Activities" text button for the Overview,
and I think that can be helpful to keep it that way IF the users are
going to go to the GNOME documentation, and not search on Ubuntu's
forums, social media, community website, Askubuntu.com, etc. I'd
probably vote that they're going to go for the latter, searching
anything with the word "Ubuntu" Online, first, since Ubuntu is the
distro they're using. New users might not even realize that the desktop
is developed - primarily - by a different organization, entirely. If
that's the case, why would they search for anything other than "Ubuntu
help".

Back in June '17 I ran a poll on the Ubuntu G+ community, asking if
users preferred the Ubuntu logo in the top-left or the "Activities"
text. 169 members voted, and 87% were in favor of using the Ubuntu logo,
with only 13% in favor of keeping the "Activities" text (here's the poll
so you can see the comments, too:
https://plus.google.com/+JesseDuBordFilms/posts/LEjy6zxmNw3).

I'd personally be in favor of replacing the "Activities" text for the
Ubuntu logo in the Ubuntu-modified GNOME shell.

Reasons being:
(1) Brand recognition. Will better allow users and surveyors to identify Ubuntu
on a PC they're passing by in the airport, coffee shop, etc.
(2) WAY less ambiguous (I have a hard time trying to understand why they used
"Activities" for the English word -- can't imagine how it translates in other
languages). Plasma tried using "Activities" as well, which I think is equally
ambiguous. At least if users see that it's a symbol, they could click on it,
see it's behavior, and designate it whatever they want. I feel that makes it
way easier for the user to adopt the desktop as their own if they can even
define it better on their terms, you know?

I do think Jeremy is right, though, that some users might not
instinctively feel it's a button. The Antergos guys did a good job of
putting the background in Blue for the "Activities" text on their theme
of the GNOME shell. Maybe doing something like having the background of
the Activities button the Ubuntu orange with the three white people
aligned in the center of the button? I personally think that would look
really cool, IMHO.

(3) With the Ubuntu-modifications to the GNOME shell, anyways, would it
really be a deal-breaker with the GNOME documentation for it to fit to
be modified a little more to fit Ubuntu's needs? I think it's more than
fair for a brand to be recognized, and - not saying this in any way as
criticism - but I imagine even some of the Ubuntu changes might differ
than the GNOME documentation for the vanilla shell? Would it then be
such a big deal to have something a little different? Again, no
criticism intended at all, just bringing it to the table.

(4) With Ubuntu already offering a vanilla shell experience with the
simple install of a package (you guys rock for that, by the way), would
it really be such a bad thing for Ubuntu to make "their version" of the
shell their own? You're offering both, after all. Maybe even a
disclaimer somewhere might be all you need that says, "The default
desktop in this version of Ubuntu uses a modified version of the GNOME
desktop. Behavior may differ slightly from how the GNOME documentation
depicts", something like that.

Alright, that was already a mouthful. Appreciate you all taking the time
to read, and hope this comment helps in deciding how to proceed.

The opal.x509 attachment is a test key only; it is not the same as
Canonical-POWER-SB-20170926.esl.signed, which is our production 2048-bit
key.

The current plan is to deliver this KEK as a certificate via a secure
in-person channel to George Wilson. I assume once delivered, if you need
this in ESL form for loading that IBM can perform this transformation (since
the only way to turn it into a signed ESL would be via the PK, which we
don't have).

[Bug 1720828] Re: Outline effect should be disabled for tabs

2017-10-03 Thread Daniel van Vugt
The orange outline is to show the keyboard focus for keyboard
navigation. It's an important feature for accessibility and won't always
be visible if you're using a mouse. When visible in a tab it tells you
that it's now possible to change tabs using the arrow keys.

So this is a feature and not a bug :)

[Bug 1720834] Re: Insufficient padding in horizontal panes causes a resize of the panes when alternating between toggle buttons

2017-10-03 Thread Daniel van Vugt
This doesn't seem to occur on my 17.10 machine. Can you attach
screenshots? And also...

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Please execute the following command only once, as it
will automatically gather debugging information, in a terminal:

apport-collect 1720834

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport by using 'ubuntu-
bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this
functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

[Bug 1281329] Re: Sync up 14.04 release with latest avaiable version from project

2017-10-03 Thread RJ Clay
Indeed and I agree but the bug when running on Perl v5.26 will need to be
resolved first, by either a patch in the package or (preferably) a new upstream
version that can handle running on that version of Perl.
See also Debian bug https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=869994

Also; given a PPA to use, a backport of v3.08 or even of v3.25 could be
made available for trusty at least for testing purposes.

[Bug 1537461] Re: Version 3.2 of SQL Ledger now available

I'm primaraly a packager for Debian but keep in mind that is
traditionally via Debian that applications and updates to those
applications are done. OTOH; if I were not interested in the status of
SQL-Ledger in Ubuntu, I would not have been reviewing the bugs present
for it there.

There not being a public repository for upstream is definitely an
issue.

There is the Debian packaging repository, currently at:
https://anonscm.debian.org/gitweb/?p=collab-maint/sql-ledger.git.

That will be changing at some point, possibly, due to infrastructure changes
at Debian.
There is also this packaging repository at GitHub, mirrored from the Debian
one, where there is
   a branch for packaging v3.2.5:
https://github.com/rocasa/pkg-sql-ledger

And regarding the missing sourse files issue itself; other
applications use something like that same file, so need to see how they
handle it.

Shouldn't something like that be sent to upstream?

> Would you mind sharing how to reproduce these bugs?

You mean, those lintian errors? A minimal command line for that is as
follows (where my system
is set to automatically run Lintian after the build and also includes an
apropriate '-e" option): debuild -rfakeroot -us -uc
That, of course, is on an extracted sql-ledger archive with an apropriate
debian/ directory.

So what's the next step here? is there a change you would like me to make
to the docker packaging or are you going to fix this on your end?
