[Bug 1567597] Re: implement 'complain mode' in seccomp for developer mode with snaps

2017-10-04 Thread Tyler Hicks
** Description changed:

  A requirement for snappy is that a snap may be placed in developer mode
  which will put the security sandbox in complain mode such that
  violations against policy are logged, but permitted. In this manner
  learning tools can be written to parse the logs, etc and make developing
  on snappy easier.

  Unfortunately with seccomp only SCMP_ACT_KILL logs to dmesg and while we
  can set complain mode to permit all calls, they are not logged at this
  time. I've discussed this with upstream and we are working together on
  the approach. This may require a kernel patch and an update to
  libseccomp, to filing this bug for now as a placeholder and we'll add
  other tasks as necessary.

  UPDATE: ubuntu-core-launcher now supports the '@complain' directive that
  is a synonym for '@unrestricted' so people can at least turn on
  developer mode and not be blocked by seccomp. Proper complain mode for
  seccomp needs to still be implemented (this bug).

  [Impact]

  Snapd needs a way to log seccomp actions without blocking any syscalls
  in order to have a more useful complain mode. Such functionality has
  been acked upstream and patches are on their way into the Linux 4.14
  kernel (backported to 4.12.0-13.14 in artful).

  The corresponding libseccomp changes are still undergoing review
  (https://github.com/seccomp/libseccomp/pull/92). The pull request adds a
  number of new symbols and probably isn't appropriate to backport until
  upstream has acked the pull request. However, only a small part of that
  larger pull request is needed by snapd and that change can be safely
  backported since the only added symbol, the SCMP_ACT_LOG macro, must
  match the SECCOMP_RET_LOG macro that has already been approved and
  merged in the upstream Linux kernel.

  [Test Case]

  A large number of tests are ran as part of the libseccomp build.
  However, the "live" tests which test libseccomp with actual kernel
  enforcement are not ran at that time. They can be manually exercised to
  help catch any regressions. Note that on Artful, there's an existing
  test failure (20-live-basic_die%%002-1):

  $ sudo apt build-dep -y libseccomp
  $ sudo apt install -y cython
  $ apt source libseccomp
  $ cd libseccomp-*
  $ autoreconf -ivf && ./configure --enable-python && make check-build
  $ (cd tests && ./regression -T live)

  All tests should pass on zesty (12 tests) and xenial (10 tests). On artful,
you'll see one pre-existing failure:
  ...
  Test 20-live-basic_die%%002-1 result: FAILURE 20-live-basic_die TRAP
rc=159
  ...
  Regression Test Summary
   tests run: 12
   tests skipped: 0
   tests passed: 11
   tests failed: 1
   tests errored: 0

  Now we can build and run a small test program to test the SCMP_ACT_LOG
  action in the way that snapd wants to use it for developer mode:

  $ sudo apt install -y libseccomp-dev
  $ gcc -o lp1567597-test lp1567597-test.c -lseccomp
  $ ./lp1567597-test

- The exit code should be 0 and you should have an entry in the system log
- that looks like this:
+ With a kernel that contains the logging patches and an updated
+ libseccomp, the exit code should be 0 and you should have an entry in
+ the system log that looks like this:

  audit: type=1326 audit(1505859630.994:69): auid=1000 uid=1000 gid=1000
  ses=2 pid=18451 comm="lp1567597-test" exe="/home/tyhicks/lp1567597-test"
  sig=0 arch=c03e syscall=2 compat=0 ip=0x7f547352c5c0 code=0x7ffc
+
+ If you have an updated libseccomp with an old kernel, you'll see that
+ seccomp_init() fails due to the added compatibility check inside of
+ libseccomp determines that the kernel doesn't have proper support for
+ the new log action:
+
+ $ ./lp1567597-test
+ ERROR: seccomp_init: Invalid argument

  [Regression Potential]

  Relatively small since the core logic is in the kernel and we're only
  exposing the new action through libseccomp. The changes include smarts
  to query the kernel to see if the action is available in the kernel.
  Calling applications will not be able to use the action on older kernels
  that don't support it.

[Bug 1719945] Re: Silently fails in Wayland session

While I can certainly confirm, what is the use case?
It would seem only useful when in a wayland session to switch from the intel
profile to the nvidia one before rebooting to an xorg session. I guess that
could save a little time/effort.

[Bug 1720197] Re: Every second(?) boot fails to display anything [MSHYBRID mode]

2017-10-04 Thread Kai-Heng Feng
I think this one is the reversed of bug #1711452.

The system I have does not display anything when gfxpayload=keep.
When using gfxpayload=text, it works normally.

IIUC, in text mode, grub will still try to iterate all available modes,
I guess that's why the issue is gone under "gfxpayload=text"?

[Bug 1721442] [NEW] on wayland, pointer movement deviating from mouse movement; general lag

2017-10-04 Thread Taddeo Manzi
Public bug reported:

I've seen Gnome Wayland is the new default session, or at least after the
update the system started that session, with "Gnome (Xorg)" on the third place
in the menu.
Anyway, the mouse is not precise and there is lag in moving it or during
xwayland apps execution, the same problem not seen (at this level) on other DEs.
In general I don't think GNOME or KDE Wayland are ready for primetime; input
profiles aren't comparable to Xorg ones even on KDE
On the other end, GNOME on Xorg is considerably faster than previous release.
I'm probably reporting this bug:

sorry if duplicate

  $ sudo apt build-dep -y libseccomp
  $ sudo apt install -y cython
  $ apt source libseccomp
+ $ cd libseccomp-*
  $ autoreconf -ivf && ./configure --enable-python && make check-build
  $ (cd tests && ./regression -T live)
  ...
  Test 20-live-basic_die%%002-1 result: FAILURE 20-live-basic_die TRAP
rc=159
  ...
  Regression Test Summary
   tests run: 12
   tests skipped: 0
   tests passed: 11
   tests failed: 1
   tests errored: 0

  Now we can build and run a small test program to test the SCMP_ACT_LOG
  action in the way that snapd wants to use it for developer mode:

  $ sudo apt install -y libseccomp-dev
  $ gcc -o lp1567597-test lp1567597-test.c -lseccomp
  $ ./lp1567597-test

  The exit code should be 0 and you should have an entry in the system log
  that looks like this:

  audit: type=1326 audit(1505859630.994:69): auid=1000 uid=1000 gid=1000
  ses=2 pid=18451 comm="lp1567597-test" exe="/home/tyhicks/lp1567597-test"
  sig=0 arch=c03e syscall=2 compat=0 ip=0x7f547352c5c0 code=0x7ffc

[Bug 1721434] [NEW] Lock screen overlay scrolling stutters

2017-10-04 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Public bug reported:

If I leave the login screen unattended the screensaver takes over. Wake
it up and there's an orange overlay screen that can be dragged with the
mouse. However it doesn't drag completely smoothly. It seems that while
the clock and date are still on-screen the drag only achieves about 30
FPS. But after the clock is dragged up off-screen the rendering becomes
smooth (60 FPS).

I find it strange that showing the clock/date text seems to impact
rendering performance so dramatically. And I wonder if it's doing
something silly like re-rendering the text on every frame...

[Bug 1721430] [NEW] connection missing in gui when created using nmcli

2017-10-04 Thread Scott Palmer
Public bug reported:

When I create a new connection using nmcli the entry is missing in
Network settings but exists in the popup. Also the name used to create
the connection is not displayed. (see screenshots attached)

The commands used to create the connection are basically:

VPN_NAME="Sample VPN"
VPN_REMOTE="somewhere.inter.net"
VPN_USERNAME="somebody"
VPN_CA="/home/$TARGET_USER/.config/ca-sample.crt"
nmcli con add type vpn ifname -- con-name "\"$VPN_NAME\"" vpn-type openvpn
nmcli con mod "\"$VPN_NAME\"" connection.autoconnect yes
nmcli con mod "\"$VPN_NAME\"" connection.permissions "user:$TARGET_USER"

I'm inclined to believe that, though to be honest I simply got into the habit
of avoiding changing pulseaudio's main volume.

Does it matter if the fix is done in pulseaudio or the alsa-driver package?
We're not even talking about the same pulseaudio now.

[Bug 1721319] Re: On-screen keyboard pops up with touchscreen even when physical keyboard present

2017-10-04 Thread Daniel van Vugt
This feels like more of a feature than a bug. It's not only useful for
testing, but a good assumption that the OSK should appear after the user
has started touching the screen. You might have a physical keyboard but
if it's a yoga-style laptop folded 180 degrees then you definitely want
to use the OSK instead of the physical keyboard.

[Bug 1696154] Comment bridged from LTC Bugzilla

I have received the KEK from Emily in person.

--- Comment From gcwil...@us.ibm.com 2017-10-04 18:16 EDT---
BTW, I learned from Emily that Canonical plans to issue Power keys/certs
separately from those for the x86 UEFI shim. So moving from SHA-512 to SHA-256
may not be much of a priority from a reuse point of view. If we need any key
changes, it would be good to send them before or during next week while Emily
will be in NY meeting with vorlon.

[Bug 1721424] [NEW] 17.10 Sound Indicator Applet doesn't "boop" to let me know how loud it is.

2017-10-04 Thread tom
Public bug reported:

4.13.0-12-generic
17.10
XPS 9560

Sound works fine, headphones or speakers. I initially thought it didn't,
based on a bug I had experienced days ago in 17.04. I tried closing the
lid and re-opening, but it did nothing. Then I watched a YouTube video
about how to fix sound, and HEARD SOUND.

So I realized the little sound indicator square that pops up when u
press volume up or volume down just isn't "booping" any sound to give
that feedback of the sound level.

Expected behavior: boops when i press volume up or volume down
Happened: no sound upon volume up or down, volume otherwise appears to work
fine.

[Bug 1721248] Re: Totem could not get a screenshot of the video

2017-10-04 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I suspect this is due to hardware acceleration (gstreamer-vaapi). We try
to avoid buffer copies for the best efficiency, but that also means
getting a screenshot is very difficult. The video image only exists in
GPU memory and requires a lot of effort to read back. It's not
surprising this doesn't quite work yet.

Similarly using Alt+PrtScn may fail to get a screenshot (without an
error message). I think the reason for that is the use of wl_subsurface
is something gnome-shell doesn't quite know how to screenshot yet(?)

[Bug 1721421] [NEW] gnome-terminal crashes when setting shortcuts in preferences

2017-10-04 Thread Ravil
Public bug reported:

Tried to set a custom shortcuts for the gnome-terminal in ubuntu 17.10 beta 2.
Set "open a new tab" on "shift+arrow down", got a crash in about a second.
Can reproduce every time after changing a keyboard shortcut there (tried to set
shift+arrow left/right for tab switching etc, maybe that is somehow related).

dmesg shows this error after:
[   72.078380] gnome-terminal-[1458]: segfault at 7001e ip 7fc1786a77fe
sp 7ffddc325128 error 4 in libgobject-2.0.so.0.5400.0[7fc178672000+52000]

ubuntu-bug doesn't launch automatically for some reason (even though
/etc/defaults/apport is enabled), had to run the tool myself, hope it
has all the info needed, if not please tell I'll provide any additional
info needed.

[Bug 1720834] Re: Insufficient padding in horizontal panes causes a resize of the panes when alternating between toggle buttons

2017-10-04 Thread Danilo Cominotti Marques
Thanks a lot for the feedback, Daniel! I have just tested it on 17.10
and it doesn't happen anymore in Gnome; it happens only in 16.04 and
Unity. If it might be fixed in 16.04, I can take some screenshots and
post them later.

[Bug 1721419] [NEW] Average rating for apps incorrect

2017-10-04 Thread hants
Public bug reported:

The average rating for apps in ubuntu-software seems to be calculated
incorrectly. For example

"Genius Math Tool" had an average rating of 2 stars and 9 reviews each
with 4-5 star rating. So i added another 4 star review. The expected
average rating is 4 stars currently a 2 star rating is displayed.

Another package with obviously weird average rating is "Log File Viewer"
currently at average 3 star rating. Considering the reviews it should be
closer to 4.6.

[Bug 1718379] Re: [17.10 FEAT] Upgrade libica >=3.2.0

2017-10-04 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package libica - 3.2.0-2

---
libica (3.2.0-2) unstable; urgency=medium

  * Drop the overly protective Breaks, migration from @Base to tagged
symbols is not an abi break, as no symbols have been dropped and only
new ones added. Bump of the minimal version requirement is correct as
newly linked code will reference tagged symbols and thus will need at
least 3.2.0 build of libica.

The gnome-terminal developer released a 3.25.1 early and then didn't
release another build until just before 3.26.0.
