I didn't manually do it, as the above commands would automatically
restart it. modprobe vboxdrv loaded but I wasn't able to fire up the
VM's. I just did a soft reboot due to a large chunk of updates landing
and everything is working fine now.
I'll continue to monitor for the next week.

It was a HP ZBook 15 G3 with 2 internal SSDs (one that looks like a disk, the
other looks more like a RAM chip), both formatted to old style MSDOS partition
table/BIOS/MBR boot.
I booted from the live CD with UEFI and wanted to install on some free space
but without formatting the disks

usually results in an error message even if gnome shell is not detecting
it. This morning the install proceeded as usual except for the lack of
log entries.
