[Bug 1730900] [NEW] "Login Screen" button not present in Region & Language

2017-11-07 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Public bug reported:

On my Ubuntu 17.10, which was upgraded from 17.04, the Settings ->
Region & Language window includes a "Login Screen" button at the top
right, which allows me to set language, format and input sources also
system wide, i.e. affecting the login screen. The Ask Ubuntu answer
 shows its location.

However, on an (almost) fresh install of Ubuntu 17.10, that button is
not present.

I don't know what the intended design is in this respect.

* If the button is supposed to be there, some dependency necessary for
it to function might be missing.

* If the button is not supposed to be there, is there some other GUI way
to control those settings system wide?

[Bug 1730551] Re: Issue streaming VP9 based videos with MPV in 17.10 with VAAPI hardware accel in Wayland session

2017-11-07 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Sorry for the delay...

Bug confirmed. And confirmed it's only in "mpv --hwdec=vaapi". So
another workaround is to use hwdec=no. But that's not as good as your
workaround of using "ytdl-format" to retain hardware acceleration via
H.264.

I have also verified that the VP9 video stream is good. You can verify
this using hwdec=no or by downloading the video and playing it with
something else like mplayer or totem. They all play the webm/VP9 video
file perfectly.

Interestingly users of older CPUs probably won't hit this problem. Seems
that MPV is smart enough to not even try to download VP9 for them and
will automatically get the H.264 instead.

Please log the bug upstream: https://github.com/mpv-player/mpv/issues

[Bug 1723835] Re: Dock - Clicking icon doesn't minimize

2017-11-07 Thread Didier Roche
The option is available in the prefs of dash to dock or via gsettings
key. The option was indeed never default behavior in Unity, but we
didn't expose it in any official UI but only ccsm IIRC. I can see Tweaks
growing this option, similarly than ccsm, as the code is already there,
for people who want to tweak it this way.

However, feedback on click for single window is indeed needed (see the
other bug report)

This bug is for tracking purpose, this is not a regression for current
cycle as this issue exists for a long time.

Steps:
1. git clone --depth=1 https://github.com/autotest/autotest-client-tests.git
2. make -C autotest-client-tests/aio_dio_bugs/src
3. sudo ./autotest-client-tests/aio_dio_bugs/src/aio-dio-invalidate-failure poo

Result:
event res -22

>From the code itself, it's expecting a -EIO return value:
if (event.res == -EIO) {
printf("invalidation returned -EIO, OK\n");
exit(0);
}

The actual return value is -22, which I think is -EINVAL

Re: [Bug 1726159] PCIe BUS Error causing really slow laptop performance

2017-11-07 Thread Kai-Heng Feng
Can you attach the output of `cat
/sys/class/scsi_host/host*/link_power_management_policy` when the issue
happens?

You probably need to disable TLP prior that.

 Title:
 PCIe BUS Error causing really slow laptop performance

 Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
 Confirmed

 Bug description:
 I recently bought the following laptop:
 Asus VivoBook X542UQ-DM148T - 15.6" (i7-7500U/8GB/256GB/GT 940MX 2GB)

 It came pre-installed with Win10 and I did a fresh install of Ubuntu
 16.04 LTS. The screen was flickering for some reason and installing
 Ubuntu 17.04 fixed the issue.

 The real problem is that when I'm booting the laptop, the following
 error is being shown on my screen:

 [   12.866073] pcieport :00:1c.5: can't find device of ID00e5
 [ 12.898481] pcieport :00:1c.5: AER: Multiple Corrected error
 received: id=00e5
 [   12.898488] pcieport :00:1c.5: PCIe Bus Error:
 severity=Corrected, type=Physical Layer, id=00e5(Receiver ID)
 [   12.898491] pcieport :00:1c.5:   device [8086:9d15] error
 status/mask=2041/2000
 [   12.898492] pcieport :00:1c.5:[ 0] Receiver Error
 (First)
 [   12.898493] pcieport :00:1c.5:[ 6] Bad TLP

 I know that this error can be hid with one of the following kernel boot
 arguments:
 pci=nomsi / pci=noaer / pcie_aspm=off / pci=nommconf.

 The weird thing is that the above output is only being shown when the
 laptop is on AC Power (charging). When the laptop is not connected to
 AC (battery-mode), it has performance issues (slow boot and slow
 application launching). I was trying all day long to fix the problem.
 I removed everything that had to do with power-saving, reinstalled,
 re-tweaked for performance, tried different kernels but had no luck.
 While diagnosing, I had the idea to benchmark the "M2 SATA-3 SSD" that
 my laptop had. The results are:

 * On AC Power: 522MB/s (READ) | 416MB/s (WRITE)
 * On Battery Power: 32MB/s (READ) | 31MB/s (WRITE)

 This explains everyting. That's why I'm having a slow boot and slow
 application launching!

 Commands "lspci" and "dmesg" say that the error comes from the
>> following
 device:
 00:1c.5 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation Sunrise Point-LP PCI Express Root
 Port #6 (rev f1)

 I will attach lspci and dmesg output on a tar.gz file.

 --
 UPDATE: When the laptop is fully charged and still on AC (but not
 charging since it is 100% charged), the errors appear again but the SSD
 speed is normal (~500 Read/Write).

 --
 UPDATE: I installed 'tlp' Advanced Power Management package and when
 using the command 'tlp ac', the SSD speed gets back to normal! The
>> option
 does not persist across reboots.

[Bug 1716982] Re: Dash to Dock still visible on lock screen under gnome-shell

2017-11-07 Thread Daeld
FWIW, i was using dash-to-dock with ubuntu-dock still installed
after today's update, the dash (ie not the modified dock) was visible from lock
screen and I was able to interact with it (ie clicked on icons and when
unlocked found associated programs open).

workaround:
apt-get purge gnome-shell-extension-ubuntu-dock
apt-get autoremove (not required but I like to just in case)
reboot

all back to normal

[Bug 1730877] [NEW] dolphin does not start as root

2017-11-07 Thread wolf
Public bug reported:

Package: kubuntu-17.10-desktop-amd64.iso
step 1:
Starting dolphin from the menu fails - kdesu starts to accept password, but
then Dolphin does not open.

three attempts to start dolphin from the command line:
step 2:
wolf@wolf-desktop:~$ kdesu dolphin
kdesu: command not found
as per man file, this is because kdesu is not in the path

step 3:
wolf@wolf-desktop:~$ /usr/lib/kde4/libexec/kdesu dolphin
Executing Dolphin as root is not possible.
/usr/lib/kde4/libexec/kdesu is a link that ultimately points to kdesudo

step 4:
wolf@wolf-desktop:~$ /usr/bin/kdesudo dolphin
QInotifyFileSystemWatcherEngine::addPaths: inotify_add_watch failed: No such
file or directory
QFileSystemWatcher: failed to add paths: /home/wolf/.config/ibus/bus
Bus::open: Can not get ibus-daemon's address.
IBusInputContext::createInputContext: no connection to ibus-daemon
Executing Dolphin as root is not possible.

Here I gave up, as the likely next steps are beyond my ability.

Other observations:
Since my system contains about a dozen partitions, I need to manually modify
fstab and /media to define which partitions are mounted at start-up, and which
are mounted only upon request. I do this by assigning unique labels to each
partition, since UUID's are not human-readable. Since a label can be assigned
to 17.10 only from another installation of 17.10 and not from an older
installation such as e.g. 16.4, because of some code changes needed for
e2label, I have also tried to directly copy the changes to fstab and /media
from another installation. This copying action made the whole 17.10 unusable -
the commandline is available, but the x-system needs starting manually, and
there is also no network access.

[Bug 1730871] [NEW] Close lid action missing in Ubuntu 17.10

2017-11-07 Thread florin
Public bug reported:

I tried to set my laptop not to suspend when closing the lid, I want it to
download some files and not have the lid open, but it seemed to be impossible,
there is no option for that. I have no idea why not, all OS have this and it
is a basic function for a laptop many change it depending on the temporary
needs.
A simple select option in Power should exist.

[Bug 1730864] [NEW] Shutdown crashing when connected to AC adapter

2017-11-07 Thread Renê Barbosa
Public bug reported:

Hello there,

I'm using Ubuntu 17.10 (fully updated) and my system is crashing at
shutdown when connected to an AC adapter.

The error is:

Nov  6 22:16:49 rene-Inspiron-5447 kernel: [  248.294280] [drm:atom_op_jump

This behavior is only happening when my laptop is charging. When running
on battery I got a clean shutdown/reboot.

Already tried to run the latest kernel package (from Mainline) and the
problem is exactly the same.

[Bug 1725649] Re: Fullscreen games lose "fullscreen" after an Alt+Tab

2017-11-07 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Dražen, could you file a new bug for that issue?

Steve, -proposed updates isn't actually a PPA. You can enable it in the
Software & Updates app on the Developer Options tab. I recommend
installing just the specific -proposed updates you want to test. And
then disable -proposed updates again. You'll still regular updates then.

[Bug 1730860] [NEW] Update live seed

2017-11-07 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu Budgie's live seed has these:
 * indicator-power
 * indicator-keyboard
 * indicator-bluetooth

Are they needed?

By the way, hunspell offers a Spanish dictionary now so maybe it's a
good time to review differences with the flagship ubuntu.bionic live
seed.

[Bug 1730852] [NEW] Device hotplugging with MPT SAS cannot work for VMWare ESXi

2017-11-07 Thread Gavin Guo
Public bug reported:

[Impact]
The hotplugging disk cannot be detected with the simulated MPT SAS
device on VMWare ESXi.

[Fix]
Author: Hannes Reinecke
Date:   Thu Aug 24 14:52:43 2017 +0200

scsi: mptsas: Fixup device hotplug for VMWare ESXi

VMWare ESXi emulates an mptsas HBA, but exposes all drives as
direct-attached SAS drives. This it not how the driver originally
envisioned things; SAS drives were supposed to be connected via an
expander, and only SATA drives would be direct attached. As such, any
hotplug event for direct-attach SAS drives was silently ignored, and
the guest failed to detect new drives from within a VMWare ESXi
environment.

[Test]
The patch has been verified based on the Ubuntu kernel v4.4.0-97.120.

Then regression happens between v4.8 and v4.10.

Make sure mainline v4.8 from [1] doesn’t have the issue, and mainline v4.10
has the issue.
After that, can you try Linux v4.9?

[Bug 1730540] Re: gnome-shell freezes after resume then unlock

2017-11-07 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Rocko,

Sorry to hear about this problem. However with a large number of open
bugs with similar symptoms we can't pin down the exact cause of this one
without more information.

If you can then please try logging into the machine remotely (e.g. via
SSH), and run 'journalctl -f' before reproducing the bug. Do you see any
log messages that are helpful? How about from 'dmesg'?

Also while logged in remotely, after reproducing the problem please
check if the gnome-shell process is still running. And if so then please
run 'kill -ABRT' on it to generate a crash file which you can later
upload with 'ubuntu-bug' or 'apport-cli'.

Well, that's a ton of picture messaging, and a ton of pictures/videos.
That's for sure. Tap on photos and it'll break it down by camera roll,

The next thought is: how many apps are actually listed in that
screen that aren't built in, because every app takes space to some
degree, and five 200mb apps make up 1gb.

This means some commits from v4.13.4 to v4.13.5 fixes your resume
problem.

The good news is that v4.13.5 based Ubuntu kernel is landing soon.

This means some commits from v4.13 to v4.14-rc1 cause the suspend issue.
You probably will hit this issue when you upgrade the system to 18.04, which
uses 4.15 based kernel.

Do you know how to do kernel bisect? I can build kernel for you if you
don’t know how.

I am in a discussion with upstream maintainer to lower the log level.
Currently you can’t do it as a user.

No, it’s not dangerous.

[Bug 1730748] Re: gnome-shell froze and crashed

2017-11-07 Thread Daniel van Vugt
This looks like it:

Nov 07 20:13:10 hostname gnome-session-binary[7876]: WARNING:
Application 'org.gnome.Shell.desktop' killed by signal 11

...

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a ".crash" file. Please follow these
instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can
be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

Now open your file manager, navigate to your /var/crash directory and open the
crash report you wish to submit.
If this fails you will have to open a terminal and file your report with
'ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash' where _my_crash_report.crash is
the crash you would like to report. If you get an error that you aren't allowed
to access this report you will have to file it with 'sudo ubuntu-bug
/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash'.

After the new bug report with a crash file has been created, please
comment here telling us the new bug ID. Please do not manually attach
any crash files to bugs - only use ubuntu-bug (or apport-cli).

would be nice if somebody having it could send the bug to the developers
of the software by following the instructions at

I agree with Jung-Kyu Park. I'd suggest that you file a separate bug

Thanks for letting us know, and yes, of course it's possible to keep
testing. Actually there is no real deadline for this. Whenever an issue
is reported, we'll fix it if possible.

At this time it seems to me as if we'll likely complete the switch to
Noto as default fonts for Japanese and Korean in 18.04, so I will soon
propose the related changes to the seed branches.

However, I have one question as regards the Korean fonts: Up to Ubuntu
17.10, besides fonts-nanum and fonts-nanum-coding, also the fonts-
unfonts-core package has been installed by default for Korean users.

https://packages.ubuntu.com/artful/all/fonts-unfonts-core/filelist

If we switch to Noto, is it motivated to keep installing fonts-unfonts-
core by default?

[Bug 1730796] [NEW] Ubuntu 17.10 graphical login and desktop unreadable (no hsync, tearing) on AMD Epyc servers

2017-11-07 Thread Duane Voth
Public bug reported:

Seen on both SuperMicro and Dell AMD Epyc based servers (that's right, I
installed the desktop version of 17.10 on a server):

Dell:
$ lspci | grep VGA
83:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Matrox Electronics Systems Ltd. Device 0536
(rev 04)
$ lspci -s 83:00 -n
83:00.0 0300: 102b:0536 (rev 04)

SuperMicro:
$ lspci | grep VGA
02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ASPEED Technology, Inc. ASPEED Graphics
Family (rev 41)
$ lspci -s 02:00 -n
02:00.0 0300: 1a03:2000 (rev 41)

The Xwayland default is not a good one here, editing
/etc/gdm3/custom.conf and removing the comment in front of
WaylandEnable=false has fixed every system that has failed.

** Affects: gnome-shell (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New
