[Bug 1737670] [NEW] [regression] MPV fails to use hardware acceleration (vaapi) on Intel graphics, starting in mpv 0.27 (bionic)

2017-12-11 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Public bug reported:

MPV fails to use hardware acceleration (vaapi) on Intel graphics,
starting in mpv 0.27 (bionic).

It's appears the required /etc/mpv/mpv.conf is present, but the line
"hwdec=auto" is failing to try vaapi. It bails when it finds Nvidia CUDA
doesn't work, and just decides to use software instead.

This is related to an issue that's come up before (bug 1728514 ?). The
simple fix should be to use hwdec=vaapi instead. That will re-enable
acceleration on Intel GPUs and also fix Nvidia GPUs failing to display
video in some cases (they will get software playback instead of broken
CUDA options).

[Bug 1569237] Re: vagrant xenial box is not provided with vagrant/vagrant username and password

2017-12-11 Thread Chris Glass
** Description changed:

  It is Vagrant convention that the default user is named "vagrant"[0],
  and a whole host of scripts assume this to be the default.

  The xenial box is substantially less useful to Vagrant users with the
- "ubuntu" user as the default, and there is limited benefit to having the
- "ubuntu" user.
+ "ubuntu" user as the default.

  [0] Search for "user to SSH" in
  https://www.vagrantup.com/docs/boxes/base.html.

  Xenial SRU:

  [impact]

  * The vagrant boxes produced by livecd-rootfs hooks do not conform to
  the vagrant community's guidelines for box creation, leading vagrant
  users to use non-official (unaudited) boxes instead, where a "vagrant"
  user can be found.

  * A large portion of vagrant automation (3rd party tools, scripts) rely
  on the presence of a "vagrant" user conforming to the above guidelines.
  The official ubuntu images are ones of the very few not conforming to
  the expected user layout.
+
+ * An additional "vagrant" user is available in the created image once
+ the proposed patch is applied. The normal "ubuntu" user is also
+ available, and is conforming to the "ubuntu experience" (it requires
+ cloud-init or another mechanism to be given keys/a password).

  [test case]

  From a fresh Ubuntu install:

  * sudo apt install vagrant

  * vagrant init ubuntu/xenial64

  * vagrant up

  * vagrant ssh

  notice the user being logged in as is "ubuntu"

  With either ubuntu/artful64 or ubuntu/bionic64, the same steps log the
  user in as "vagrant".

  [Regression potential]

  * Users who worked around this behavior in their automation are the most
  at-risk. They might not be able to login to their boxes anymore, if they
  worked around by extracting the ubuntu password from the box metadata.
  If they worked around the problem using cloud-init, no regression will
  be visible.

  * The changes introduce a new insecure user, users having worked around
  the problem on their own might be be unaware of this.

  * The general consensus in the vagrant community is to install third-
  party boxes instead of spending time to try and workaround the problems
  with the official ubuntu boxes, so it is likely to be a limited real-
  world impact.

  * The change might affect exotic systems where people for some reason
  decided to build a non-vagrant machine out of our official vagrant image

  Note that these regressions will apply to users upgrading their
  installations to future releases (artful, bionic, and later).

[Bug 1569237] Re: vagrant xenial box is not provided with vagrant/vagrant username and password

2017-12-11 Thread Chris Glass
Clarified the description by the original bug author.

The proposed solution for SRUing does *not* drop the ubuntu@ user, and
the ubuntu user behaves exactly the same way as with every other cloud-
image we deliver.

There is an *additional* default user (the "vagrant" user), that
conforms to the community's expectations.

Please be kind enough to either keep the conversation civil and adhering
to the Ubuntu community's code of conduct, or refrain from making
further comments. The behavior is being changed, swearing and calling
names won't make it go any faster.

[Bug 1737669] [NEW] New test needs arch dependent include for static lib.

2017-12-11 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
Public bug reported:

Hi,
the new test works great, but only on x86 as the test needs to build a helper
and for that uses a fix path. Instead it would need to use a arch dependent
include path.

[Bug 1569237] Re: vagrant xenial box is not provided with vagrant/vagrant username and password

2017-12-11 Thread dizeee
> However, users of Ubuntu on any other platform will find Ubuntu
*harder* to use on vagrant after your change. Since vagrant users do not
make up a majority of Ubuntu users, there is thus more value in Ubuntu
acting the same across platforms than there is in Ubuntu changing its
behavior to fit vagrant

Sounds like some religious b#@*S%^t or a f#%@* vendor lock. We use
Ubuntu for development, testing and production. It's great, but not
unique. We could use let's say Debian instead as well. I didn't even
know/care about the ubuntu user until faced this issue. What is that
extremely common and massive use case that requires a user with an OS
specific name? I need root user to create other users I need. E. g. some
internal users to perform tasks like www-data to run my web server and
application code or automation user with extended privileges to perform
software/configuration updates, and real user accounts for team members.
And I need an abstract user for local development and vagrant is there
for me in every project I work on, not depending on any particular OS.
And if there's one box of a million that doesn't respect that, I don't
care. But when it's one of the major vendors out there, it should be
ashamed because it's wasting time, traffic and nerves of it's users.

Marc, this patch seems to have not been included upstream in Debian, and
it's definitely a behavior difference vs. the other tar implementations
as used by debootstrap (i.e. GNU tar). Is this actually fixing a
security vulnerability, or is it an attempt to mitigate future unknown
vulnerabilities?

  It also supports the Todo.txt format. See http://todotxt.org/

  It optionally can run in the background using a standard autostart file

-
- The Debian maintainer has split the package into multiple binary
- packages for its library and gobject-introspection data, but it's been
- questioned whether that is useful or whether that library is purely

[Bug 1737663] [NEW] dhclient fails setting default gateway to unreachable host

2017-12-11 Thread HonoredMule
Public bug reported:

When receiving an IP from a DHCP server and a router IP that is not the
same IP, dhclient-script silently fails to add the router as a default
route for the interface (RTNETLINK answers: Network is unreachable).
Error occurs on line 320:

# set default route
ip -4 route add default via ${router} dev ${interface} \
${if_metric:+metric $if_metric} >/dev/null 2>&1

  With no control over the DHCP server (an ISP-provided appliance
configured to propagate its external IP to this DHCP client), the
apparent solution (other than quick hard-coded hacks like `route add
default MYINTERFACE`) is to first create a single-ip route, adding the
preceding line:

ip -4 route add ${router} dev ${interface}

(Alternatively, collapsing the resulting two rules by replacing original
line's use of ${router} with ${new_ip_address} also works, and also
preserves the route table's resolution of the gateway ip to a hostname -
unlike the hack.)

I could probably write a more complex custom enter hook to correctly
handle the scenario, but this does not seem so terribly obscure to
justify it (standard appliance from a major Canadian ISP). With
sufficient information present to infer the correct routing, I believe
it should work out of the box.

I do not rule out consequences of doing so beyond my current grasp, and
it does seem odd to me that my ISP provides a gateway outside the
subnet. Nevertheless I hope some attention on the issue will yeild a
more robust stock configuration or at least some deeper insight.

[Bug 1737661] [NEW] Bionic net installer on ppc64el fails, can't chroot to target

2017-12-11 Thread Jeremy Kerr
Public bug reported:

When attempting a netboot install on bionic, it fails during base system
install, with the message:

.  │  │   Debootstrap warning│  │
.  │  │ Warning: Failure trying to run: chroot /target dpkg-deb -f   │  │
.  │  │ /var/cache/apt/archives/dpkg_1.19.0.4ubuntu1_ppc64el.deb Version │  │

Trying to run anything in the chroot at /target/ fails:

  ~ # chroot /target /bin/bash
  chroot: can't execute '/bin/bash': No such file or directory
  ~ # ls -l /target/bin/bash
  -rwxr-xr-x1 root root   1544376 May 17  2017 /target/bin/bash

... which looks like a missing dynamic linker:

  $ readelf -l bash | grep interpreter
  [Requesting program interpreter: /lib64/ld64.so.2]

  ~ # ls -l /target/lib64/ld64.so.2
  ls: /target/lib64/ld64.so.2: No such file or directory
  ~ # ls -la /target/lib64/
  drwxr-xr-x2 root root  4096 Oct 11 20:21 .
  drwxr-xr-x   20 root root  4096 May 23  2017 ..

The syslog seems to indicate that the installer failed to untar a
symlink:

  Dec 12 05:17:36 debootstrap: tar: skipping unsafe symlink to '/lib
/powerpc64le-linux-gnu/ld-2.26.so' in archive, set
EXTRACT_UNSAFE_SYMLINKS=1 to extract

I've attached a script to reproduce the issue in qemu. I can provide the
full syslog if you need it.

** Attachment added: "Video showing the crash"

** Description changed:

  Open a new document. Type content as follows:

  aaa
  bbb
  ccc
+ bbb

  Then open the Advanced Search-Replace dialog (under edit), and search
  for "bbb". In the replace box, write "\abc" inside an ERT (red) box.

  Make the substitution. Now try to undo the operation (ctrl-z). LyX

[Bug 1737657] [NEW] Failure to be root is repored in a misleading message

2017-12-11 Thread Kevin O'Gorman
Public bug reported:

This is a feature request.

When solving a problem or in a rush, I don't necessarily remember
everything from a man page, or even think to read it. This is what
happened with ntpdate(8)

$ ntpdate
11 Dec 20:08:12 ntpdate[13930]: no servers can be used, exiting
$

Of course, I should have used sudo. And it's documented. But as I
pointed out that doesn't help much when in a hurry or stressed. My bad,
so I usually wouldn't mention it. But the fix is so simple I hope it
appeals to you.

-> test the permissions and if they are missing, make that message

[Bug 1736816] Re: system freezed

2017-12-11 Thread Kai-Heng Feng
Both amdgpu and radeon supports your GPU. A good idea to try AMDGPU
instead.

Add a line "blacklist radeon" to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf.
Then run `update-initramfs -u -k all`.
Reboot to see if this help.

[Bug 1518473] Re: /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness is broken

2017-12-11 Thread Alejandro Palacios
link-dupont really nailed it! I am having the same issue on an HP
Elitebook 8770w with ONLY an NVIDIA Quadro K3000M, using the proprietary
driver version 387.34 on Fedora 27, Kernel 4.14.3-300

I tried all:

acpi_backlight=video
acpi_backlight=vendor
acpi_backlight=native

to no avail, so removed all of that and installed inotify-tools, I do
have /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0 so I ended up with the following
script in /home/YOURUSERHERE/Scripts/backlight_inotify.sh

#!/bin/sh

path=/sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0

luminance() {
read -r level < "$path"/actual_brightness
factor=$((100 / max))
printf '%d\n' "$((level * factor))"
}

read -r max < "$path"/max_brightness

nvidia-settings -n -a BacklightBrightness="$(luminance)"

inotifywait -me modify --format '' "$path"/actual_brightness | while read; do
nvidia-settings -n -a BacklightBrightness="$(luminance)"
done

And then created file brightnessfix.desktop under
/home/YOURUSERHERE/.config/autostart

[Desktop Entry]
Name=Brightness Fix
Exec=/home/YOURUSERHERE/Scripts/backlight_inotify.sh
Terminal=false
Type=Application
Name[en_US]=backlightfix.desktop

It is a very effective workaround, thanks.

Oh, examining DuplicateSignature attachment I now realize the source of
the issue. In my server I'm using redis as session storage for PHP and
thus have disabled completely systemd service to cleanup php sessions on
file.

Maybe the failure to load php session clean systemd timer should not
cause anything fatal during upgrade process, no?

[Bug 1737648] [NEW] Hold libgweather in -proposed until first bionic language pack

In https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libgweather/3.26.0-1ubuntu1 we
worked around a Launchpad configuration bug for Ubuntu language packs.
That configuration issue has been fixed but we still need a language

[Bug 1737466] Re: Kubuntu Discover packaging uses packagekit backend by default; should instead default to Flatpak

2017-12-11 Thread Nate Graham
Sorry for wasting your time; this ticket can probably be closed. After
spending a few days with the Flatpak backend, I don't think it should be
installed or made the default yet. I'm going to continue to polish it
upstream. If and when it's ready, I'll open a new ticket.

That said, there is something that Kubuntu's Discover packaging can do:
add Flathub by default, so the user doesn't have to:

[Bug 1737645] [NEW] plasma-discover-flatpak-backend should add flathub repo during installation

2017-12-11 Thread Nate Graham
Public bug reported:

The plasma-discover-flatpak-backend package isn't very useful without
any repos configured. Right now, Flathub is the only really useful one,
so I think it makes sense to add it when the package is installed, to
save the user (who is probably non-technical if they want to use the
Flatpak backend) from having to figure out that they have to add a
Flatpak repo, what one would be, how to do it, etc.

I recommended doing this automatically for all distros in
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=387718, but Discover's author and
maintainer advised that this is a distro packager's decision. So here I
am, asking Kubuntu's plasma-discover packagers to automatically add the
Flathub repo (https://flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo) when plasma-
discover-flatpak-backend is installed. :)

[Bug 1737623] Re: Python 3 is missing a standard directory from the module search path

2017-12-11 Thread Ubuntu Foundations Team Bug Bot
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a
specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu
in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source
packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs
about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your
bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage.
You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1737623/+editstatus and add the
package name in the text box next to the word Package.

[Bug 1683990] Re: [Precision 3510, Realtek ALC3235, Speaker, Internal] No sound at all

mute after each re-start.

  Edit 05-Nov-2017
- wondering if my issue could be same as bug 1616079
  note that when I run pulseaudio (verbose) at the command line it says that
the daemon is running but that pa_pid_file_create() failed

  and when I ran gnome-control-center at the command line recently I saw:

  the tree, so cannot set the active output

  (gnome-control-center:8955): sound-cc-panel-WARNING **:

  nothing

  -original text of bug--

  I have had no sound since original (fairly recent) purchase. I purchased
  online from Dell.

  Sound preferences were originally showing in upper right hand corner of
  the screen, but the sliders for changing volume were grayed out, and
  choosing sound test had no audible or visual result.

  Now sound preferences are not showing in upper right corner at all, and
  system preferences --> sound no longer shows 'sound test' as an option.

  I tried to fix original problem myself by killing then re-starting pulseaudio
  No effect. Also I tried commands

  apt-get purge pulseaudio
  and then later
  apt-get install pulseaudio

  it seemed to be after that when the sound preferences stopped showing in
  upper right corner, but I also did a general ubuntu update at the same
  time (and there is still a restart required for update for 'Latitude
  E5X60 System Update' 68614)
