[Bug 1727401] Re: Corruption on windowed 3D apps running on dGPU (Intel/AMD)

2018-01-11 Thread Taihsiang Ho
Hi, I can't reproduce this issue with a fresh installed Artful on the I+A
system[1] with gfx
  - Intel Corporation HD Graphics 520 [8086:1916] (rev 07)
  - Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Topaz XT [Radeon R7 M260/M265 /
M340/M360 / M440/M445] [1002:6900] (rev 81)

I might need more information to reproduce and make sure this issue on Artful
as well.

This is actually fixed a while, but stalled on its way due to the LP build farm
maintenance.
We essentially wait for [1] to fully build all arches and then check proposed

[Bug 1717714] Re: @{pid} variable broken on systems with pid_max more than 6 digits

2018-01-11 Thread Seyeong Kim
** Description changed:

  [Impact]

If PID is larger than 6 digits.

  apparmor denies process.

this fix is committed, but not released. so all supporting version are
  affected.

  [Test Case]

  1. making pid over 6 digits
- - i used touch command to do it
- 2. snap install canonical-livepatch ( just picked this pkg )
+ #!/bin/bash

- you can see denied msg as original description
+ for i in {1..100}
+ do
+ touch t
+ done
+
+ 2. snap install --dangerous core_16-2.29.4.2_amd64.snap ( snap core
+ 16-2.30 avoids using /proc/PID/cmdline, so need to use older version
+
+ 3. you can see DENIED msgs in syslog
+
+ 4. change /etc/apparmor.d/tunables/kernelvars
+ 5. service apparmor restart
+ 6. service snapd restart
+ 7. DENIED is gone
+
+ This is one way, can't reproduce this issue again even if you change
+ back to original kernelvars, and restart snapd

  [Regression]
this fix changes regex only, i don't think there is severe regression. also
if there is regression, we can revert manually temporarily.
denied services need to be restarted after fixing this.

  * Revision :
  http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~apparmor-dev/apparmor/master/revision/3722

  [Original Description]

If your kernel.pid_max sysctl is set higher than the default, say at 7
digits, the @{pid} variable no longer matches all pids, causing some
breakage in any profile using it.

  @{pid} is defined in /etc/apparmor.d/tunables:

@{pid}={[1-9],[1-9][0-9],[1-9][0-9][0-9],[1-9][0-9][0-9][0-9],[1-9][0-9][0-9][0-9][0-9],[1-9][0-9][0-9][0-9][0-9][0-9]}

It only covers up to 6 digits.

  This Ubuntu 17.04 system has:
  kernel.pid_max = 4194303

  And is showing
  type=1400 audit(1505588857.828:792): apparmor="DENIED" operation="open"
profile="libvirt-55e9e12c-e6dc-4f56-a547-8514cf7d9bf3"
name="/proc/2168180/task/2769256/comm" pid=2168180 comm="qemu-system-x86"
requested_mask="wr" denied_mask="wr" fsuid=111 ouid=111

  Which should be matched by
  @{PROC}/sys/vm/overcommit_memory r,
  in /etc/apparmor.d/abstractions/libvirt-qemu

  I'm seeing similar failures on 16.04 (2.10.95-0ubuntu2.7), 17.04
  (2.11.0-2ubuntu4) and 17.10 (2.11.0-2ubuntu17)

I am aware this is a non-default configuration, but I think this should
  work.

Thanks for all of that.
I had assumed they'd prefer "their own", but I'm ok either way.
I kicked of an discussion about - if that is the stance taken - vmware
maybe assisting to qualify the backports to give the confidence needed

2018-01-11 Thread alperyilmaz
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1720768 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1720768

Uh oh! Then, is there anything I can do, to pinpoint the actual problem?

Is there any package/tool which I can run before inserting USB and
collect information during freeze and restart of gnome-shell?

Running strace or similar tool for gnome-shell pid would do any help?

I'm afraid the crash reports for gnome-shell are huge and might contain
noise originating from other bugs/problems. I thought; the info, trace,
calls during the event only might help locate the problem may be..

Thanks.

[Bug 1690085] Re: Ryzen 1800X freeze - rcu_sched detected stalls on CPUs/tasks

2018-01-11 Thread Tom Reynolds
So, to sum up, we have several reports here that Ubuntu's default
kernels freeze on low load situations with Ryzen CPUs (or a subset of
Ryzen CPUs?) up to and including the latest mainline releases. This bug
differs from bugzilla.kernel.org #196481 (user space segfaults only on
high CPU load).

For low load freezes we have a reliable workaround for Xenial (probably
also for newer releases) across different hardware components
(differences in exact Ryzen model, mainboards, memory models and
configurations) and kernel versions:

* Update to latest UEFI
* Kernel >= 4.10.0 (4.14.5 mainline tested successfully) built with
CONFIG_RCU_NOCB_CPU
* The result of `echo rcu_nocbs=0-$(($(nproc)-1))` appended to
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX

In my experience, with the above changes applied, the following BIOS changes
are NOT necessary:

* Disabling SMT
* Disabling ALSR

It is unclear whether it is strictly necessary to disable C6 in BIOS,
comments welcome.

I would think CONFIG_RCU_NOCB_CPU is an acceptable compromise (for this
CPU type) if it provides the stability AMD has, for exactly one year
now, been unable to provide to Linux users on their current platform.

[Bug 1734147] Re: corrupted BIOS due to Intel SPI bug in kernel

2018-01-11 Thread Mika Westerberg
#528

Keep in mind that there are two *separate* issues:

1. Bug off-by-one bug in intel-spi driver that causes CMP bit to accidentally
set to 1. This results BIOS
being read-only. The bug was fixed by 9d63f17661e2 ("spi-nor: intel-spi: Fix
broken software sequencing
   codes") in september.

2. Some Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga BIOSes reset to default settings if their BCR
register is touched. This BCR
handling is in a different driver (drivers/mfd/lpc_ich.c). This issue has
been fixed by commit
d9018976cdb6 ("mfd: lpc_ich: Do not touch SPI-NOR write protection bit on
Haswell/Broadwell") in july.

So in order to have a kernel that is free from both issues, you need to
disable the intel-spi driver (for reasons being that it is not supposed
to be enabled for normal users anyway) and then cherry-pick commit
d9018976cdb6 to make sure the other issue does not happen.

I used "ubuntu-bug" to gather this info. I see it set
"ExtraDebuggingInterest: I just need to know a workaround" but that's
not what I selected when it asked. I chose the option that was something
like "Yes, but not if too technical".

[Bug 1742867] [NEW] Screen blank, audio choppy, system locked

2018-01-11 Thread clickwir
Public bug reported:

While watching a YouTube video, screen went blank. Audio cut out, after
a few seconds the audio started playing normally for a few more seconds
then kept repeating the last half a second of audio for a few more
seconds. Then it stopped and nothing responded.

It did this a few times over the course of an hour. Had to power off the
PC to get a reboot. Last time it did this I ssh'd from another PC to get
dmesg and syslog info as it happened. Attaching those captures.

[Bug 1742862] [NEW] btrfs wedge after 4.13.0-26 hwe kernel update

2018-01-11 Thread Bill Lipa
Public bug reported:

On Ubuntu 16.04 LTS I updated the hwe kernel from 4.10.0-42-generic
x86_64 to 4.13.0-26 to get the Meltdown patch. On this box, I use
systemd-nspawn to run containers using ephemeral mode on a btrfs volume
(set up as a loopback device by systemd). After the kernel update,
btrfs appears to be getting stuck somewhere with fairly high frequency
(so far it's occurred always within an hour or two of use, on two
separate machines). Anything that touches the btrfs volume will then
freeze, including a btrfs scrub. The machine has to be hard rebooted
and will continue to display the problem until the kernel is reverted,
at which point btrfs proceeds as normal.

Attached are the sysreq 't' trace output and the hung task output from
journalctl.

** Affects: btrfs (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

** Attachment added: "journalctl output with hung task info"

[Bug 1735594] Re: [regression] compiz crashes after Mesa upgrade

2018-01-11 Thread Phil Norisez
I got it to work, and it fixes my problem with the launcher resulting in
an unknown file error on /usr/bin/compiz.

Go to Software & Updates via command line
ubuntu-software &
and selecting it from a list of apt applications.

Use Developer Options to enable xenial-proposed.

Then run command line:
sudo apt-get install libgl1-mesa-dri/xenial-proposed

This installed it for me.

[Bug 1742572] Re: System Hangs and General Protection Fault Occurs following NFS Access

2018-01-11 Thread Mike Vastola
Out of curiosity, can you link me to the upstream git repo for
http://kernsec.org/pipermail/linux-security-module-
archive/2017-December/004638.html? I want to be sure I'm looking at the
right place.

Interestingly, it looks like someone replied to your patch saying they
would incorporate it in early December, so it seems this bug fell
through the cracks more than once.

Joseph Salisbury is subscribed to this bug and has commented on it
above, so hopefully he will update regarding this when he gets a chance.

This seems like a really simple fix, so I'm actually going to see if I
can recompile 4.13.0-25-generic with this patch added to make it work.

[Bug 1742856] [NEW] Silently stops receiving mail (agent not ready)

2018-01-11 Thread Roman Odaisky
Public bug reported:

Every couple weeks, some of my accounts silently stop receiving email as
though I’m not being sent any. I think this happens with my GMail
accounts and not with my own IMAP server, but I’m not sure. When I go to

“Ready”. If I restart the agent, mail starts being received.

This is unfortunately yet another Akonadi Does Not Work problem. Please
fix.

2018-01-11 Thread Tetsuo Handa
The problematic patches are not yet in mainline/upstream kernels,
and hence the fix patch is not yet in mainline/upstream kernels.

Please ask Joseph Salisbury when the action for Artful kernel will be
taken.

[Bug 1742721] Re: linux-image-4.13.0-26-generic / linux-image-extra-4.13.0-26-generic fail to boot

2018-01-11 Thread Tarim
Latest update of Lubuntu 16.04.3 LTS 32-bit to kernel 4.13.0-26-generic
on old Acer Aspire One corrupts the initial login screen. Some of the
screen appears properly on the right hand side - the remaining screen is
random/changing black and white pixels. The machine still boots kernel
4.10.0-42-generic with no problem.

2018-01-11 Thread Stéphane Graber
Sorry about the delay. I've added the tasks for Xenial and Artful. We're
going to ignore Zesty due to its EOL.

@Simon are you planning on bumping those to the releases that have been
released since?

If so, I'll wait a bit before uploading those, if not, let me know and
I'll upload those.

[Bug 1742829] Re: Windows dynamic disks are detected as swap space, data overwritten during installation

2018-01-11 Thread Andrea Faulds
0x42 is the partition type code for Windows dynamic drives.

0x42 is *also* a legacy partition type code for Linux swap partitions.

I have a sneaking suspicion this might be why this happens.

I'm stupid it's a path issue. The script is located in
/usr/lib/GNUstep/System/Applications/WPrefs.app/WPrefs.

A ln -sf to where wmaker looks for WPrefs resolved the issue.

[Bug 1742842] [NEW] Wprefs will not open

2018-01-11 Thread hanzomon4
Public bug reported:

* I'm running on the 64bit version of Ubuntu

Description:Ubuntu 17.10
Release:17.10

apt-cache policy wmaker-common
wmaker-common:
  Installed: 0.95.8-2
  Candidate: 0.95.8-2
  Version table:

500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu artful/universe amd64 Packages
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu artful/universe i386 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Attempts to open the WPrefs from the gui fails with:

Could not execute command
"/usr/share/GNUstep/System/Applications/WPrefs.app/WPrefs"

If I try to open from the command line with openapp:

openapp /usr/share/lib/GNUstep/System/Applications/WPrefs.app
Could not find /usr/share/lib/GNUstep/System/Applications/WPrefs.app/WPrefs
executable/script

And ls -a:

ls -a /usr/share/lib/GNUstep/System/Applications/WPrefs.app/

. .. tiff WPrefs.tiff WPrefs.xpm

The WPrefs.app/Wprefs script appears to just be missing.

It has to be fixed in 18.04 first. And after that it may get backported

love to get feedback from more users on that -- it seemed to not make
any difference for me when I tried it.

^^^
The above fix is scheduled for release upstream in the next preview release of

would appear unlikely (I am guessing) due to the large number of patches
involved.

[Bug 1742106] Re: NMI watchdog: BUG: soft lockup - CPU#9 stuck for 22s! [linux:23890]

2018-01-11 Thread Arijit Banerjee
Thanks Joseph, with the 4.15-rc7 kernel, the system seems stable after
16 hours. With the 4.4 kernel, the lockups reproduce within 1-2 hours of
running the workload.
