VPN is completely busted on bionic-desktop (4/21/2018). In 17.10 my VPN
was still working, "only" had to do a `killall nm-applet; nohup nm-
applet &` to get the password prompt to show up. In bionic, at least

I've tested if my suggested workaround would work. see ppa:saxl/ppa.
It works :)
Summary: Default 18.04 installation should not be affected since
/etc/hosts contains an entry with the local hostname. If ubuntu removes
this line by default the default installation will break (afaik systemd-
and again, what's the reason not to use existing tools, specifically
made for this purpose, but to increase complexity and bloat?
