Also, we do disable Wayland by default for login sessions. Ubuntu 18.04
uses Xorg by default.
Wayland is only enabled by default for gdm3. Do you have a problem with
the login screen?

"Wayland" is only a protocol and "wayland (Ubuntu)" is a series of
libraries for that protocol. So please don't log bugs against "wayland".
What you are describing sounds most likely like Gnome Shell, where the
mutter component chooses Wayland or X11.

Ok, found the culprit, for some reason LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE was set to
1, apparently, this tells Ubuntu to use the LLVM renderer. The article
below says this is sometimes set when the GUI does not work correctly or
crashes. I have been lately been switching between Wayland and Xorg,

Using the newest driver files of the Windows driver and putting
(overwriting) them into the /lib/firmware/qca directory seems to help.
