This should be analyzed, but I don't have spare cycles for it so I put it on
the teams backlog.
Since it is there at low prio this isn't a guarantee for anything, but a slight
bump of chances to get re-reviewed when there might be time.

[Bug 1184077] Re: kde-l10n-zhcn depends on ibus-pinyin

2018-06-06 Thread SnDream
It is June 2018 now, and the problem is still unsolved.
It's really annoying.
The problem is, for example, the DVORAK keyboard you use, but when you install
kde-l10n-enus (if exist), the keyboard layout must be QWERTY.

To fix the bug, just remove

kubuntu:AdditionalDepends=ibus-pinyin

in substvars. It's really hard?

[Bug 1771962] Re: hanging at boot for about 30 seconds since upgrade to bionic

2018-06-06 Thread Zwylicht
If I remember correctly resume was set to cryptswap partition. When
doing so again (`RESUME=UUID=xxx`) invocation of `update-initramfs -uk
all` gives

```
W: initramfs-tools configuration sets
RESUME=UUID=9792e199-e275-4547-b9ce-c4e507e8bd5d
W: but no matching swap device is available.
```

The device is available and in use.

[Bug 1075774] Re: [MIR] gstreamer-vaapi

2018-06-06 Thread Doug McMahon
It could also be considered from view that currently it's not a terribly
reliable plugin.
It may break playback on some hardware, may cause less than smooth playback on
some hardware or filetypes & in some admittedly obscure use cases also break
playback.
Also the fact that there is no way for users to disable short of removal.

So maybe more suited to explicit installation rather than by default

[Bug 1774950] Re: Suspend fails in Ubuntu and Kubuntu 18.04 but works fine in Ubuntu and Kubuntu 17.10 (and on Kubuntu 18.04 using kernel 4.14.47)

2018-06-06 Thread Kai-Heng Feng
This requires kernel bisection between v4.14 and v4.15.

$ sudo apt build-dep linux
$ git clone git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git
$ cd linux
$ git bisect start
$ git bisect good v4.14
$ git bisect bad v4.15
$ make localmodconfig
$ make -j`nproc` deb-pkg
Install the newly built kernel.
If the issue still happens,
$ git bisect bad
Otherwise,
$ git bisect good
Repeat to "make -j`nproc` deb-pkg" until you find the commit that causes the
regression.

[Bug 1774915] Re: Video freezes and stutters when using totem (audio continues fine)

2018-06-06 Thread Daniel van Vugt
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1698270 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1698270

Charlie, yes I would recommend using mpv instead of totem. mpv will
perform better and is the only other video player that will take
advantage of Intel hardware acceleration properly [2]. I do _not_
recommend gnome-mpv [1] and also do _not_ recommend vlc because it seems
to be lacking in hardware acceleration. I have no experience with
SMPlayer, but please see also [2].

Tracy, the mpv close issue is bug 1720835.

I think we should merge this into bug 1698270 now.

Wow. Insane that it's for a mistyped password. That's a bizarre bug!

It's definitely what I experienced. For some reason, it was laggy, and
only "caught" about half my password keystrokes, so when I pressed
enter, it was an incorrect password. Then, I typed it correctly, and ran
into the purple hang. Wow. I'm flabbergasted.

[Bug 1774915] Re: Video freezes and stutters when using totem (audio continues fine)

2018-06-06 Thread Tracy
Sorry for the long delay in responding - had to wait for some other
things to finish so I could switch from Xorg to Wayland. The same types
of pauses/lags/freezes happen to me under Wayland using mpv as were
happening under Xorg. They may be slightly less frequent (subjective
judgment, no actual counts done), but they still occur.

Also, I find that I am unable to close mpv under Wayland. Alt-F4 does
nothing, nor does going to the Window menu and choosing Quit. The video
continues, and I am not sure exactly what else to use to close it (other
than just waiting for it to finish running) - I don't know much about
mpv. Closing wasn't a problem under Xorg - either of the two methods
mentioned above worked there. Just throwing that out there for
consideration.

[Bug 1763830] Re: [MIR] gce-compute-image-packages

2018-06-06 Thread Seth Arnold
I reviewed gce-compute-image-packages version 20180129+dfsg1-0ubuntu3 as
checked into bionic. This is not a full security audit but rather a quick
gauge of maintainability.

I didn't see any CVEs in our database.

- gce-compute-image-packages provides utilities and integration useful on
  Google's cloud hosting platform, including new account creation,
  centralized account management, granting blanket sudo rules, ssh keys,
  and a variety of other configuration tools.

- Build-Depends: cmake, debhelper, dh-python, dh-systemd,
  libcurl4-openssl-dev, libgtest-dev, libjson-c-dev, libpam-dev,
  python-all, python-setuptools, python3-all, python3-setuptools,
  python-pytest, python3-pytest, python-mock, python-boto, python3-boto

- Several daemons started via systemd, do not themselves daemonize

- pre/post inst/rm scripts are automatically generated code, except for a
  piece that will stop services before removing them

- No initscripts; systemd unit files to start:
  - accounts daemon
  - clock skew daemon
  - instance setup
  - ip forwarding daemon
  - network setup
  - shutdown scripts
  - startup scripts
- No dbus services
- No setuid
- Adds several binaries to PATH:
  - google_accounts_daemon
  - google_clock_skew_daemon
  - google_instance_setup
  - google_ip_forwarding_daemon
  - google_metadata_script_runner
  - google_network_setup
  - optimize_local_ssd
  - set_multiqueue
  - google_authorized_keys
  - google_oslogin_control
- No sudo fragments in the static packaging -- adds new sudo entries at
  runtime, however
- udev rules to add some device nodes, permissions, set storage parameters
- Small-ish test suite run during the build, this is a hard thing to test
  in isolation but hopefully this is helpful

- Some subprocesses are spawned, via string-based execution tools;
  sometimes with only the authentication server's checks for username
  validity to ensure shell metachars aren't included in inputs. Ideally
  these would perform checks for shell metachars directly.

- memory management looked careful
- Files are written to -- including sudoers files -- and if the umask of
  the process isn't correct, it might allow a race condition for local
  attacks.
- No environment variable use
- Privileged functions looked careful, with exception of writing sudoers
  files
- No cryptography
- No privileged portions of code
- No temporary files
- Does not use WebKit
- Does not use PolicyKit
- Clean cppcheck

- pam_sm_acct_mgmt() functions rely upon the correct behaviour of a remote
  web service to prevent local security problems with usernames that
  include e.g. ../../.. substrings.

- pam_sm_acct_mgmt() in pam_oslogin_admin.cc creates a sudoers file before
  setting appropriate permissions; if C++ doesn't have a mechanism to
  expose open(2)'s modes, then it would be best to set the umask() to
  something restrictive before this open() call.

- Is /lib/libnss_google-compute-engine-oslogin-1.1.4.so the right path for
  libraries?

Security team ACK for promoting gce-compute-image-packages to main.

Thanks

[Bug 1775279] Re: display bug at login

2018-06-06 Thread Daniel van Vugt
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1760201 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1760201

These graphical problems are almost certainly caused by the nouveau
graphics driver.

Please try the official nvidia driver if you can, whichever newest one supports
your hardware:
  nvidia-driver-390
  nvidia-375
  nvidia-367
  nvidia-361
  nvidia-352
  nvidia-346
  nvidia-340
  nvidia-331

The main reason why there are so many options is because Nvidia
regularly drops support for their older hardware and in that case only
an older driver will still work.

[Bug 1774915] Re: Video freezes and stutters when using totem (audio continues fine)

2018-06-06 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Sergei, "performance" is a general category of problems that includes dropped
frames. For example, in gnome-shell I have separated those issues:
  https://trello.com/c/Q6JYXPPs
from the ones that incur measurably high hardware usage:
  https://trello.com/c/pe5mRmx7

A low frame rate is still a performance problem even if it's not
stressing the hardware.

[Bug 1774915] Re: Video freezes and stutters when using totem (audio continues fine)

2018-06-06 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Before we merge this bug into bug 1698270 I would like to hear Tracy's
response to comment #25.

Then I expect we will need/want to get more of the above lists of gnome-
shell performance issues fixed before we can confidently say this issue
exists purely within video playback.

P.S. If the problem is purely a video playback issue then my suspicion
is that some component is implementing frame dropping incorrectly. If it
is implemented using double buffers then you can easily starve the
screen of new frames while repeatedly (racily) replacing the backbuffer.
The right approach then is to use 3 buffers and the mailbox algorithm.
The mailbox algorithm is nothing new, but that's what Vulkan calls it
anyway: https://software.intel.com/en-us/articles/api-without-secrets-
introduction-to-vulkan-part-2

[Bug 1748147] Re: [SRU] debhelper support override from /etc/tmpfiles.d for systemd

2018-06-06 Thread Robie Basak
I didn't see this as a bug in debhelper because, based on the Debian
bug, it seems to me that the use case of one package's tmpfiles.d/ file
overriding another was not considered, even if systemd can handle it
underneath. From that perspective, debhelper supporting lexical sort
based overriding is a feature request in debhelper, not a bug; and
rsyslog packaging relying on an unimplemented debhlper "feature" is the
bug.

[Bug 1775489] [NEW] there are large random pictures or clipart looking emoji icons all over my screen when i open thunderbird. as i scroll my inbox

2018-06-06 Thread camoguy
Public bug reported:

when i open thunderbird, there are clipart images on my screen which
don't belong there. ive tried purging thunderbird reinstalling and
manually downloading a deb. the images appear to move as i scroll. the
images change, there are different types of images. ive included a
screen shot. there are clip art like emjoicons images like palm tree,
fire symbols, trucks, smileys with green money symbols, pizza. as i move
my mouse over them they sort of disappear. it's a glitch not sure why
it's doing this.

[Bug 1075774] Re: [MIR] gstreamer-vaapi

2018-06-06 Thread Daniel van Vugt
What we recommend instead is for anyone who wants to use it install
'ubuntu-restricted-addons', either by ticking the appropriate box during
installation or just by installing that package after.

[Bug 1075774] Re: [MIR] gstreamer-vaapi

2018-06-06 Thread Daniel van Vugt
We would love for gstreamer-vaapi to be in main and I'm sure Will Cooke
agrees. The problem is a legal one, I think in dependency 'libva'. We'd
have to check with legal.

[Bug 1015784] Re: Pidgin task bar icon keeps flashing in xfce

2018-06-06 Thread xaxazak
Identical bug.

Flashing can only be stopped by closing pidgin. Doesn't flash on restart.
The unstoppable flashing seems to begin after topic activity after resuming
from suspend.

Xubuntu 18.04
Pidgin 2.12.0 (libpurple 2.12.0)
RX 480 using mesa via padoka PPA (but I can't see why this would matter).

XFCE:
Dual monitor. 3 Panels.
Window Buttons panel item: grouping = Never, show from single monitor.

[Bug 1775487] [NEW] Sandisk Ultra USB 3.0 Flash Drive doesn't work in USB 3 ports

2018-06-06 Thread Adam Novak
Public bug reported:

I have a 128 GB Sandisk Ultra USB Flash Drive. It works when I plug it
into a USB 2.0 port, or if I partially insert it into a USB 3.0 port (so
the USB 3 pins don't make contact).

Here's what lsusb says about it:

Bus 001 Device 005: ID 0781:5581 SanDisk Corp. Ultra

And dmesg from a successful connection:

[ 1269.667097] usb 3-1.4: new high-speed USB device number 6 using xhci_hcd
[ 1269.779871] usb 3-1.4: New USB device found, idVendor=0781, idProduct=5581

[ 1270.811703]  sdd: sdd1
[ 1270.813869] sd 10:0:0:0: [sdd] Attached SCSI removable disk

But if I insert the drive all the way into a USB 3.0 port on a hub, I
get nothing. And on a USB 3.0 port on the machine directly, I get this
in dmesg:

[ 1395.230629] xhci_hcd :03:00.0: Cannot set link state.
[ 1395.230641] usb usb2-port4: cannot disable (err = -32)

[ 1402.182085] usb usb2-port4: cannot disable (err = -32)
...repeats until unplugged...

It doesn't show up in lsusb in the USB 3.0 port.

[Bug 1771539] Re: Xorg crash

2018-06-06 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Mario Costa:

1) Please provide the output of the following terminal command (not manually
attach anything found):
ls -la /var/crash

2) As per your Bug Description, you are using the non-default kernel parameter:
radeon.runpm=0

Could you please advise to if this is required to use?

Also, if you remove it, does the crash still happen?

3) As per the sticker of the monitor itself (not from the Bug
Description, or the result of a terminal command), could you please
provide the full monitor manufacturer and model?

4) How are you connecting the monitor to the computer, via DisplayPort-
to-DisplayPort cable, DisplayPort-to-HDMI cable, dongle/adapter, etc.?

5) If you keep the external monitor disconnected from the computer on
boot up, and after login then plug it in does this provide a WORKAROUND?

6) Does the crash only happen after coming up from a cold boot, only
after resuming from suspend, etc.?
