[Bug 1786445] Re: in ubuntu14.04 No such file or directory - /etc/init.d/statd start

2018-08-10 Thread Steve Langasek
statd in Ubuntu 14.04 is managed via upstart, not via sysvinit.
Therefore it is controlled via /etc/init/statd.conf, not via a file
under /etc/init.d.

[Bug 363695] Re: update-apt-xapian-index uses too much CPU and memory

2018-08-10 Thread Emanuele
Kubuntu 18.04, again the problem has not been solved, sometimes I find myself
the laptop or desktop that slows down, looking through the processes there is
always the process "apt-xapian-index" that uses CPU.
I resolve by removing the package, but it pulls other dependencies:
kubuntu-driver-manager, kubuntu-notification-helper.
I know how to solve by removing the package, but a new user who does not know
how to do it could blame Kubuntu or KDE.

[Bug 1780838] Re: FTBFS on armhf due to alignment problem

2018-08-10 Thread Robie Basak
Thanks!

I pushed 1.5.9-0ubuntu1~ppa2 to my experimental PPA:
https://launchpad.net/~racb/+archive/ubuntu/experimental/+packages

This drops your earlier trial patch, and adds all commits from
1.5.9..next from git://github.com/memcached/memcached as patches. This
should be identical to what you'll get if you release next as 1.5.10. If
this works on all arches, then "next" should be good from Ubuntu's
perspective I think.

2018-08-10 Thread D'Antonio Giampietro
It is not a real bug. This problem is due to the system upgrade from
16.04 to 18.04. In a new installation of ubuntu 18.04 or derivates, the
problem there isn't! I not tested it, but I think that if you want
upgrade the system from 16.04 you must early uninstall gimp completely
and after the upgrade you can install it without problems.

[Bug 1087075] Re: Duplex options ignored for printing Postscript

2018-08-10 Thread gf
Hello Rueben.
Thank you for submitting this bug and reporting a problem with cups. You made
this bug report some time ago and Ubuntu and cups have been updated since then.

Could you confirm that this is no longer a problem and that we can close the
ticket?
If it is still a problem, are you still interested in finding a solution to
this bug?
If you are, could you let us know and, in the current version, could you run
the following (only once):
apport-collect 1087075
and upload the updated logs and and any other logs that are relevant for this
particular issue.

Thank you again for helping make Ubuntu and cups better.

[Bug 1786528] [NEW] Drag and drop fails.

2018-08-10 Thread Mark Preston
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS
Release:18.04

mark@Lexington:~$ apt-cache policy pinta
pinta:
  Installed: 1.6-2
  Candidate: 1.6-2

I tried to open a .jpg by dragging the file from the file manager into
the Pinta window.

Pinta fails, asks for this bug to be reported and here it is:

[Bug 1786462] Re: linux 4.17.0-7.8 ADT test failure with linux 4.17.0-7.8

2018-08-10 Thread Colin Ian King
When running this test on 3 concurrent VMs with this kernel this runs fine.
With the ZFS backing store of the VMs set to sync on writes, I can slow the I/O
and I get a lot of timeout issues which result in tests running for a long time
and probably would get nuked by the testing infrastructure -
see attached dmesg log for the timeouts.

I am currently speculating that the tests are failing because VFAT is
sub-optimal compared to other file systems and with a slow backing store
we may be just getting lockup warnings because of slow I/O write out
and/or syncs.

At least I have a reproducer. I don't think this is a critical show
stopping bug. I will try and figure out what particular stress case is
causing the issue, but this may take a while to iterate through.

But the locale is the problem if LANG=C is set this problem is there.
I fixed this now on my system it was used in the past to fix display isue in mc.

So is it a bug when je set lang to c with.
You can reproduce when you do a export LANG=C

[Bug 1779863] Re: Ubuntu nodejs package isn't ABI compatible with mainline nodejs.

2018-08-10 Thread Steve Langasek
Hello Nicolas, or anyone else affected,

Accepted nodejs into bionic-proposed. The package will build now and be
available at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nodejs/8.10.0~dfsg-
2ubuntu0.1 in a few hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how
to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this
update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested and change the tag from
verification-needed-bionic to verification-done-bionic. If it does not
fix the bug for you, please add a comment stating that, and change the
tag to verification-failed-bionic. In either case, without details of
your testing we will not be able to proceed.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in
advance!

** Description changed:

  [impact]

Pre-built addons for nodejs built against the 8.10 version, which is
what is included in Bionic, will fail to load on Bionic because the
version of nodejs there is built using a newer ABI-incompatible openssl
  version.

  [test case]

- see comment 4 (and discussion in following comments)
+ 1. Run 'sudo apt install nodejs npm'
+ 2. Run 'mkdir /tmp/lp.1779863'
+ 3. Run 'cd /tmp/lp.1779863'
+ 4. Run 'npm install grpc'
+ 5. Note that it mentions installing a prebuilt binary from remote.
+ 6. Run 'node' and enter the following code:
+ > const grpc = require('grpc')
+ > const creds = grpc.ServerCredentials.createSsl(null, [])
+ > const server = new grpc.Server()
+ > server.bind('0.0.0.0:8080', creds)
+ 7. Observe that this results in a crash, with an error like:
+ node: symbol lookup error:
+
/tmp/lp.1779863/node_modules/grpc/src/node/extension_binary/node-v57-linux-x64-glibc/grpc_node.node:
+ undefined symbol: SSL_library_init
+ 8. Run 'npm install node-webcrypto-ossl'.
+ 9. Observe that compilation fails due to a header expectation mismatch.
+ 10. Install nodejs from -proposed.
+ 11. Repeat steps 6-9 and observe that the commands succeed without errors.

  [regression potential]

Although this SRU changes the ABI of nodejs that is exposed to binary
add-ons, the practical regression potential for this ABI change is
minimal. The archive has been scanned to confirm there are no reverse-
dependencies in Ubuntu which use this part of the ABI, and it is not
feasible to build third-party binaries that are compatible with nodejs
as shipped in 18.04 because the gyp build system used by the nodejs
ecosystem exposes system headers that don't match the symbols exported
by the current Ubuntu nodejs built against OpenSSL 1.1.

Thus, the greatest risk of regression is from someone manually working
around this gyp incompatibility in order to build an add-on which uses
these symbols. This risk is negligible.

Changing this to use openssl1.0 assumes that the security team will
  maintain security patches for openssl1.0.

There is no risk of regression in protocol compatibility by switching
back from openssl 1.1 to openssl 1.0, because TLS 1.3 support has not
yet landed in the openssl package in 18.04.

  [other info]

alternately, this could be fixed by upgrading the nodejs package in
Bionic (and Cosmic) to a newer nodejs - Debian has version 10.4.0 in
  experimental.

also debian 904274 has quite a bit of discussion.

  original bug description below.
  ---

  Background:
NodeJS has a native extension API: https://nodejs.org/api/addons.html
It's fairly understood by developers that NodeJS's ABI is stable, and that
one module built using a version of nodejs should work on another semantically
version compatible of nodejs.

NodeJS exposes various third party libraries to the native module
developers. Quote from the addons developers page: "Node.js includes a
number of other statically linked libraries including OpenSSL. These
other libraries are located in the deps/ directory in the Node.js source
tree. Only the libuv,i OpenSSL, V8 and zlib symbols are purposefully re-
exported by Node.js and may be used to various extents by Addons."

It's fairly understood by developers that native modules have the same
ABI guarantee than the rest of the node API.

The NodeJS ecosystem uses native modules extensively, and it's fairly
common for developers to publish precompiled versions of their
extensions so that the typical end-user can simply npm install their
dependencies without worrying about having a compiler installed. Some
packages will do their own thing (see for instance
https://www.npmjs.com/package/uws), while others will rely on third
party extensions to facilitate their work. See for instance prebuild
(https://www.npmjs.com/package/prebuild) that has a handful of

[Bug 1783637] Re: power manager monitor off causes tty to change

2018-08-10 Thread Leo
** Package changed: xfce4-power-manager (Ubuntu) => light-locker
(Ubuntu)

** Summary changed:

- power manager monitor off causes tty to change
+ light-locker causes tty to change

** Description changed:

After upgrading to 18.04, on xfce4 with Display Power Management (xfce4
-power-manager) enabled, or any of the three sliders set to non-zero,
then when the time limit is hit after inactivity two monitors power
down, but then the tty switches to tty8, and the third monitor just
shows a black with a cursor flashing. Switching back to tty7 shows text
saying that the session is locked, but no amount of keyboard or mouse
activity brings up a prompt to unlock it.

Two Xorg logs are created when this happens (see attached). Ctrl-Alt-F#
will switch to other ttys at this point, but only briefly before
switching back to the one that is black with a single flashing cursor.
After a few switchings between ttys, it stops automatically going back
  to tty8.

This problem also occurs when xscreensaver is used to control the
display power management as well. However on switching back to tty7 in
this case, the unlock dialog is presented as expected and things
continue to work. So it would appear it is something more fundamental
than xfce4-power-manager that is causing the active tty to change when
  the screens go sleep.

The screen power off that occurs while the lightdm's graphical login is
presented (i.e. before logging in) works fine.
+
+ This problem appears to be due to light-locker. If I stop it from
+ running the problem goes away.

(I would expect things to happen as in 17.10, namely that the displays
blank/switch off as selected, and then when further input is given they
  unblank/switch on.)

Please let me know what further information I can provide to narrow down
  the problem.

2018-08-10 Thread Joshua Powers
This is blocking the daily install test: in only having main it prevents
the install of the utah-client on the system and hence the post-install
tests fail.

The last Cosmic ISO to pass and get published was from June 10, 2018.
Since then the daily tests have all failed.

[Bug 1783906] Re: Linux 4.15 and onwards fails to initialize some hard drives

2018-08-10 Thread David Milburn
Hi Joe,

Can we put some debug in sata_down_spd_limit() and see some of the values
for spdlimit, sstatus, spd, mask, right before the change to not force the mask.
Also, can we track the exact path of calling sata_down_spd_limit().

The the intent of the patch was not to force the speed down before reading the
link speed from SStatus, it doesn't change mask. Thanks.

[Bug 1785696] Re: i have Asus X455L and with 4Gb ram and 500gb harddrive. While installing 18.04 failing at installation of grub

2018-08-10 Thread Steve Beattie
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

[Bug 1489360] Re:  Spaces after some unicode characters are looking like unicode placeholder characters

2018-08-10 Thread Paul Hardy
Sworddragon,

Here is some more detail. The UTF-8 equivalent for the surrogate pair
you entered should be (in octal) \360\237\217\201 in the web page you
were viewing.

The Unifont package is split between a base "Unifont" font, which only
contains Plane 0 glyphs (and the Copyleft glyph as of Unifont 11.0.01),
and a "Unifont Upper" font, which contains glyphs above Plane 0. The
TrueType format has a hard limit of 64k glyphs in one font, so the split
into two fonts is necessary.

If you were using the "Unifont Upper" font rather than the base
"Unifont" font to try to display that web page, I added a space glyph to
it for the Unifont Upper 11.0.01 release. That is the only thing that
might have caused that behavior that changing the TrueType font would
influence. I could not reproduce the issue you saw even before the
Unifont 11.0.01 release though.

As a data point for the font rendering engine, I found out last year
that Harfbuzz uses its own determination for spacing of TrueType glyphs.
It ignores x-axis offset information that the TrueType font contains.
Harfbuzz only uses horizontal offset information in OpenType fonts, not
in TrueType fonts. You can see the exchange related to that here:

 https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=787284

The end result of that should be that at least for combining characters,
vertical placement will be improved but horizontal placement could be
less than ideal (even incorrect, as observed in that GNOME bug report).

Adding the space glyph to "Unifont Upper" in version 11.0.01 was the
only change I could make to a TrueType font that I did not already make.
All horizontal offset information was already in all the TrueType fonts
in the Unifont package. If this is still a problem, I do not see any
way it could be from the TrueType fonts; it would have to be with the
font rendering engine.

Thank you,

Paul Hardy
