[Bug 1792045] Re: Ubuntu 18.04 external USB hard drive performance 1/10th of 16.04

2018-09-16 Thread Kai-Heng Feng
Would it be possible for you to do a kernel bisection?

First, find the last good -rc kernel and the first bad -rc kernel from
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/

Then,
$ sudo apt build-dep linux
$ git clone git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git
$ cd linux
$ git bisect start
$ git bisect good $(the good version you found)
$ git bisect bad $(the bad version found)
$ make localmodconfig
$ make -j`nproc` deb-pkg
Install the newly built kernel, then reboot with it.
If the issue still happens,
$ git bisect bad
Otherwise,
$ git bisect good
Repeat to "make -j`nproc` deb-pkg" until you find the commit that causes the
regression.

[Bug 1740517] Re: [SRU] SDL2 2.0.6 isn't compiled with Vulkan support

2018-09-16 Thread Ryan C. Gordon
No need to update 1.2, at least for Vulkan support. If no one is complaining
about loadso for 1.2, I think it's safe to leave that alone in Bionic and just
be correct going forward into Cosmic. We can always revisit in a separate bug
report if something serious arises, but I don't predict that will happen.

There shouldn't be any ABI issues; SDL still exports the same symbols,
just some of those functions will return an error code immediately if
support has been disabled. Since we need SDL to work with binaries that
are shipped for generic "Linux" platforms that can't promise a specific
distro or configuration (both for Steam and just delivering games
outside of package managers in general), we are _religious_ about
keeping a stable ABI in all circumstances for SDL...so it's safe to
change those configure options even for LTS.

[Bug 1792668] Re: gnome-calendar fails to sync, update, or cache

2018-09-16 Thread ethanay
Experiencing similar issues/behavior in other gnome office apps:
contacts and todo list.

Contacts has actually given a useful error when trying to edit a google
contact, but the error message disappears very quickly and cannot be
copied or pasted. Attached is a screenshot.

This is all occurring on a fresh install. All I did was install the
software, link my google accounts, and try to run the apps. For some
reason, they are not self-configuring with the google accounts
correctly.

[Bug 1792843] Re: GDM lock screen will not accept credentials and then loses keyboard?

2018-09-16 Thread Graham Wheeler
** Description changed:

- So yesterday I got the prompt to upgrade my 16LTS system to 18. Man am I
- sorry I went ahead with this; I am in a world of hurt. But the most
- frustrating issue out of many has to be this one.
+ So yesterday I got the prompt to upgrade my 16LTS system to 18. This
+ caused a number of issues, but the most frustrating issue out of many
+ has to be this one.

After a period of inactivity, the lock screen kicks in. When I then try
to log in, using the correct password, I get a spinner for about 10
  seconds, the "Authentication error".

After a couple of seconds "Authentication error" goes away but now it
seems no keys are registering at all in the password field. I say "it
seems" because I see no "*"s as I type, but I do see occasional prompts
of "Authentication error" coming back, but I haven't pinpointed the
circumstances - certainly not triggered by hitting ENTER, sometimes
backspace? Not sure if it has anything to do with the keys.

After this all I can do is log in over ssh and reboot; I'm basically
  locked out on the console.

+ If I wait a while the keyboard does seem to come back but the problem is
+ still there - my password is not accepted and then the keyboard again
+ seems to do nothing for a while.
+
This happens whether I have a USB keyboard connected or whether I am
running Synergy and using a virtual keyboard. Mouse continues to work
  fine.

Release and kernel: Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS (GNU/Linux 4.15.0-34-generic

[Bug 1792857] [NEW] Mouse pointer is the wrong size after resuming from suspend

2018-09-16 Thread Mike Doherty
Public bug reported:

After resuming from suspend, but mouse pointer is the wrong size when
located in some parts of the screen. Specifically, when mousing over the
left or top bars of the UI (not the desktop or any running programs),
the pointer is too large. A workaround is to open display settings, pick
any other resolution, click apply, then click revert. When the original
resolution is restored, the pointer size returns to normal.

[Bug 1792849] [NEW] nvidia_supported have error excluding lot of supported video card

2018-09-16 Thread Moc
Public bug reported:

I have a Nvidia GT 720M in my laptop and the only Drivers Ubuntu supply
me is 340 which is dated from 2014. I think that OLD version was left
in the repo because of the bug I'm talking about here.

nvidia_supported script that generate a list of PCI ID from the
README.txt have a problem that exclude a lot of PCI ID because of
scripting error. Since 340 version, Nvidia changed the README.txt
format, and the person who edited the nvidia_supported did some error
there.

This patch should resolve this and allow a LOT of Nvidia video card user
to use modern and supported Drivers including support for VDPAU which
finally give hardware video decoding support !

[Bug 1792843] [NEW] GDM lock screen will not accept credentials and then loses keyboard?

2018-09-16 Thread Graham Wheeler
Public bug reported:

So yesterday I got the prompt to upgrade my 16LTS system to 18. Man am I
sorry I went ahead with this; I am in a world of hurt. But the most
frustrating issue out of many has to be this one.

This happens whether I have a USB keyboard connected or whether I am
running Synergy and using a virtual keyboard. Mouse continues to work
fine.

x86_64)

[Bug 1792838] [NEW] 1804.1 - sticky-keys not working in gnome-flashback

2018-09-16 Thread davidr
Public bug reported:

[Impact]

I installed 1804.1 on my pc. I was previously running 1604 series. When
using Gnome flashback sticky-keys settings do not work.

I originally opened a ticket in
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-
flashback/+bug/1790744). A fix has been released and the developer
directed me to open a ticket here to get his fix into 18.04.

[Test Case]

While in gnome flashback go to system settings > Universal Access >
Typing and set Stcky Keys ON. I also use Beep when a modifier key is
pressed but that has never worked.

Open any document or a new text file and test: it does not work.

[Regression Potential]

The developer implies his fix can be back ported to 1804.

[Other Info]

Description: Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS
Release: 18.04

gnome-flashback:
  Installed: 3.18.2-1ubuntu1
  Fix released in 3.30

Please let me know if further iformation is required.

[Bug 1690085]

2018-09-16 Thread Michael
Hi,

update from me, as promised. First my system for reference:
2700X
B450 Chipset - Gigabyte B450 AORUS PRO with F2 BIOS
PSU from 2018 which is "Haswell compatible".

Typical Current Idle AND disabling global c-states didn't help.
Running Ubuntu 18.04 LTS with its stock kernel 4.15.0-34 right now.

I am having some success (4 days now) with all of that AND idle=nomwait
kernel parameter - although I only read that to be related to resets and
not freezes.

Anyways. will keep my system on.

I would like to trade in the LEDs on GPU and mainboard for vendors
effort to get some stability in their systems.

Any update from someone who really knows what is going on would be
really appreciated. We're playing around with settings which are not
explained anywhere.

[Bug 1464064] Re: Ubuntu apt repos are not available via HTTPS

2018-09-16 Thread shadow-light-tech
I agree that signing packages already solves most of the security
issues, but I was genuinely surprised to just realise that Ubuntu isos
are downloaded via plain http by following the recommended links on the
official Ubuntu homepage.

(most non-technical users aren't going to verify their iso!)

I was even more surprised to realise that when following the Ubuntu "How
to verify your Ubuntu download" it told me to download the checksums
again via plain http and https wasn't even available!

https://tutorials.ubuntu.com/tutorial/tutorial-how-to-verify-ubuntu#2
http://releases.ubuntu.com/18.04/

The sky may not be falling for regular apt installs, but if the OS
itself is compromisable than nothing else really matters. This ticket
seems to mostly be focused on apt usage. Should a new one be opened for
Ubuntu iso downloads?

[Bug 1792835] [NEW] Bash completion for Inkscape does not work

2018-09-16 Thread Håkon A . Hjortland
Public bug reported:

Bash completion for Inkscape does not work in Ubuntu 18.04. It will for
example suggest non-svg files.

The reason seems to be that /usr/share/bash-
completion/completions/inkscape uses the have() function, which is
temporarily defined in /usr/share/bash-completion/bash_completion, but
then unset at the end of that file.

Workaround: Copy /usr/share/bash-completion/completions/inkscape to
~/.local/share/bash-completion/completions/inkscape and remove the uses
of "have".

The bash completion for some other commands seem to use have() too, e.g.
jackd, ufw, cowbuilder, dpatch_edit_patch, and axi-cache, so bash
completion for these commands will presumably not work either.

>From /usr/share/bash-completion/bash_completion:
-
# Backwards compatibility for compat completions that use have().
# @deprecated should no longer be used; generally not needed with dynamically
# loaded completions, and _have is suitable for runtime use.
have()

[Bug 1754294] Re: After last updated libcurl3 on libcurl4, some apps are removed.

2018-09-16 Thread Jeremy Akers
So it's September 2018. 18.04 was released in April 2018. And we still
can't have "curl" and "VirtualBox" installed simultaneously? You have
got to be freaking kidding me.

All because someone at Canonical decided this was "not their problem" to
ensure that libcurl3 and libcurl4 could be installed side by side?
Apparently every app in the literal Linux universe needs to update to
libcurl4 the instant Ubuntu decides to upgrade otherwise it can't be
installed on the latest version of Ubuntu?

[Bug 1792817] Re: pluma input lag (very slow)

2018-09-16 Thread Jeffry Johnston
Might have found it! Ran pluma on Ubuntu MATE live (18.04) and it didn't
have the problem. So, I straced pluma to see what files were being
loaded from my home directory and started methodically renaming things
one at a time. Renaming ~/.fonts.conf seems to have done the trick for
me. The contents of that file were:

/home/REDACTED/.Fontmatrix/Activated

I also renamed ~/.Fontmatrix for good measure.

Did some searching and it seems that fontmatrix was last available back
in 14.04. I didn't have it installed anymore, but it seems like
something I might have checked out once upon a time.

Anyhow, I hope this can get back to the developers and not silently
closed. I saw a few other frustrated pluma users around the web!

[Bug 1792828] [NEW] trash-cli package is outdated

Public bug reported:

The trash-cli package uses a 6 year old source (0.12.9.14)

[Bug 1792826] [NEW] Cannot select desktop Background in KOI-8

2018-09-16 Thread AsstZD via ubuntu-bugs
Public bug reported:

When clicking the Backgrounds applet in the Settings, nothing happens.
In Terminal, the Python exception is visible:

 ...cs_backgounds.py, line 130, in on_module_selected
 path = subprocess.check_output(["xdg-user-dir",
"PICTURES"]).decode("utf-8").rstrip("\n")
UnicodeDecodeError: 'utf-8' codec can't decode byte 0xe9 in position 13:
invalid start byte

This is apparently caused by my locale, being "ru_RU.koi8-r". When I set
the locale to C, it opens, but all the folders are empty. The terminal
is spammed with:

 Failed to convert /usr/share/backgrouns/blah.jpeg: UnicodeDecodeError:
'utf-8' codec can't decode byte.

etc.

[Bug 1661808] Re: hp-setup insists on trying to retrieve key from pgp.mit.edu even if key exists, also not using hkp://pgp.mit.edu and therefore fails to download key

2018-09-16 Thread gf
Hello Krish,
Thank you for submitting this bug and reporting a problem with hplip. You made
this bug report some time ago and Ubuntu and hplip have been updated since
then.

Could you confirm that this is no longer a problem and that we can close the
ticket?
If it is still a problem, are you still interested in finding a solution to
this bug?
If you are, could you let us know and, in the current version, could you run
the following (only once):
apport-collect 1661808
and upload the updated logs and and any other logs that are relevant for this
particular issue.

Thank you again for helping make Ubuntu and hplip better.
