This driver is in the kernel since 4.17 [1]. Before I used the media-
tree backports[2], but had some issues (inkluding the reported bug) that
I was hoping to get rid of. Though I can't say for sure wheter is was
exactly the same. I just remember that a kernel bug showed up in dmesg.

Ok Leó thats odd, I'll have to try this on one of my other i386 machines
to see if I can duplicate this. Lubuntu itself runs fine on my test
machine, and it can run applications such as Firefox without problems
as-well. I'll let you know how I get on with the other i386 machine.

The patch is the correct approach, but if you grep the whole source code
of HPLIP for "QMessageBox" you find many more places (at least 25) with
this problem.

I have had the same issues with Ubuntu 18.04 and a Samsung MZ-V7E1T0
1000GB M.2 PCI Express 3.0 and the default installation (ext4): Plenty
of errors, especially when upgrading/installing packages via apt.
I have reinstalled the whole system. Instead of the standard journaling
file system (ext4),

I'm unable to fully test the upstream bugs as I can't install linux-
headers-4.19.0-041900rc6-generic due to libssl1.1 not being available
for 4.15. System does boot without the generic package on the new
version though.
While i'm looking at upgrading the boxes to 18.04 from the 16.04
