I have now installed the released 18.10 version of Lubuntu, and have
exactly the same problem as before...
1. Install Lubuntu 18.10
2. Reboot
3. Edit /home/scott/.config/user-dirs.dirs to point the standard xdg
directories to
directories in my /data/scott directory

1. Can you please confirm where you are looking when you say "it no
longer shows any of the audio output devices"? Are you looking in
Settings > Sound > Output ?
2. Can you please try booting Ubuntu from USB:
http://releases.ubuntu.com/18.10/
and tell us if the problem still occurs in the
Notes as it is currently unreliable on WiFi, making appport-collect
hard.
After restoring from the recovery partition I am able to add this WPA2
network.
I then run apt-get upgrade and it gets buggy. Thanks for helping out.

I just today downloaded the released Lubuntu 18.10, placed it on a USB
thumb drive, and booted from it. There on the desktop was the install
icon, which when double-clicked upon, yielded the stated window...

Found a workaround: Enter the username and password as part of the URL
when adding the source. That is:
smb://:@//
This isn't really acceptable, as it means the password is plainly
visible onscreen as you're setting up the share.
