[Bug 1836500] Re: open-vm-tools

2019-07-18 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
Hi Lars,
the latest would be [1] 10.3.10 as verified to be ok by VMWare.
It was published in mid June, if you didn't do updates before it is possible
that this might be the first time you use the new version.

Upgrading the tools in a guest of my own works fine, so we need to find
what exactly is happening in your case.

I might not the best expert in debugging these issues, so I subscribed
Oliver to the bug who is repsonsible for open-vm-tools upstream. He
might have an idea what to look for in addition.

[Bug 1836500] Re: open-vm-tools

2019-07-18 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
Quote:
"4) When starting the VM it comes as far as starting the graphical interface
just befor showing the login. It just hangs from there, can only be turned off."

So how could we get some state info from there.
I assume you have no means whatsoever to e.g. get to the main console via
keyboard.

Could you check the following:
- is the guest even running, so in monitoring is it shown busy or idling?
- is the guest stuck like in paused mode or doe vmware think it works correctly?
- can you setup (pre update) an ssh login and then when the crash happened
maybe "behind the stuck UI" log in via ssh to gather logs?
- can you use a non-UI guest that would boot into only the console anyway, if
on that guest the update is present does it get stuck as well?

[Bug 1796501] Re: systemd-resolved tries to mitigate DVE-2018-0001 even if DNSSEC=yes

2019-07-18 Thread Bryan Quigley
I just built a package that just reverts it for Bionic and Disco :
https://launchpad.net/~bryanquigley/+archive/ubuntu/1796501

Will confirm results tomorrow but so far with DNSSEC=yes:

Bionic with DVE-2018-0001 patch: Can't resolve europa.eu
Bionic with patch reverted: Can resolve europa.eu

Disco with DVE-2018-0001 patch: Can't resolve people.com.cn, search.yahoo.com,
news.yahoo.com
Disco with patch reverted: Can resolve those three domains.

[Bug 1489855] Re: Change to mount sequence order breaks persistence on casper-rw partitions

2019-07-18 Thread Michael Hudson-Doyle
OK, that wasn't so bad:
https://code.launchpad.net/~mwhudson/ubuntu/+source/casper/+git/casper/+merge/370351

It seems to work for your test case, my test case (where you dd the
image then create a partition), and even for the case where you create a
file called casper-rw containing an ext4 filesystem in a vfat partition.

I've made a new initrd with this change in at
https://people.canonical.com/~mwh/initrd.new although it's 60 odd megs
so it might be easier to follow my instructions above to repack the
initrd for yourself.

[Bug 1837117] Re: Laptop backlight is off after system boot up

2019-07-18 Thread Po-Hsu Lin
Hi,
it looks like this might be the cause:
https://kernel.ubuntu.com/git/ubuntu/ubuntu-xenial.git/commit/?h=master-next=423c214817cfb7c96c198a873bcb56b498458fb9

With the fix:
https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commit/1dd93f873d8ed8e5b228d1ae324b1f3c1e94bfa8

Can you give this patched kernel a try to see if it can fix your issue?
https://people.canonical.com/~phlin/kernel/lp-1837117-eeepc/

Thanks

[Bug 1836828] Re: Kodi crashes when trying to play any video

2019-07-18 Thread Tom Lake
Solution found:

This bug is caused after an update for the latest version of
libdrm-amdgpu1=2.4.97-1ubuntu1~18.04.1

Download the previous version from
https://mirror.transip.net/ubuntu/ubuntu/pool/main/libd/libdrm/

Install libdrm-amdgpu1_2.4.95-1~18.04.1_amd64.deb

and Kodi will return.

I've open a bug report to the dev

[Bug 1837170] [NEW] Kodi package crash after the update of libdrm-amdgpu1

2019-07-18 Thread Tom Lake
Public bug reported:

Greetings,

The last update of libdrm-amdgpu1 caused a bug on Kodi package, making
it to crash after loading any video or reproduce a black image.

Version: 2.4.97-1ubuntu1~18.04.12019-07-03 15:07:54 UTC

  libdrm (2.4.97-1ubuntu1~18.04.1) bionic; urgency=medium

  * Backport to bionic for 18.04.3 HWE stack update. (LP: #1824111)

 -- Timo Aaltonen Wed, 10 Apr 2019 13:54:06 +0300

Kodi gives this error:

#3 0x7f47676c60aa in ?? () from
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/radeonsi_dri.so
#4 0x7f47676c5dd7 in ?? () from
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/radeonsi_dri.so

Repeated several times

#3 0x7f475ce2c5a6 in ?? () from /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libLLVM-8.so.1
#4 0x7f475ce2c425 in ?? () from /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libLLVM-8.so.1

Team-Kodi stated these errors are in relation to 'Not supported GPU
drivers', when Kodi can't find these files.

I've found the cause, and a temporary solution:

This bug was caused after an update for the latest version of libdrm-
amdgpu1 2.4.97-1ubuntu1~18.04.1

So I grabbed the previous version from
https://mirror.transip.net/ubuntu/ubuntu/pool/main/libd/libdrm/

installed libdrm-amdgpu1_2.4.95-1~18.04.1_amd64.deb

and now Kodi returns.

I created a bug report, the problem affects multiple users.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kodi/+bug/1836828

We have a PointRelease coming soon, would we have time to fix this package?

Thank you for your assistance.

[Bug 1836881] Re: gnome-shell freeze

2019-07-18 Thread Daniel van Vugt
OK I missed some steps there sorry...

The command:

  apport-cli --hanging -P PID

will give you a link to help you complete creation of a new bug. You
then need to follow that link, on any machine. Don't send us that link.

After you have created a new bug, please tell us its ID.

If that didn't work then please look at
https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where ID is the content of file
/var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine. Do you find any links to
recent problems on that page? If so then please send the links to us.

[Bug 1837157] Re: Fresh install on Acer Aspire XC-605 fails continously

2019-07-18 Thread Chris Guiver
Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

This package failure looks like it was caused by a corrupted file
system, or device failure. eg. look in the logs and you'll see messages
like these :-

Jul 18 22:18:34 ubuntu-studio kernel: [ 393.659846] SQUASHFS error: zlib
decompression failed, data probably corrupt
Jul 18 22:18:34 ubuntu-studio kernel: [ 393.659848] SQUASHFS error:

Jul 18 22:18:34 ubuntu-studio kernel: [ 393.660717] SQUASHFS error:
squashfs_read_data failed to read block 0x4c73e47f

Examining the information you have given us, this does not appear to be
a useful bug report so I am closing it, as it appears to be a faulty
device (or bad write-to-device). If you believe I'm in error, please
leave a comment explaining why and change the status back to 'new'. I
suggest you use the 'check disc for defects' option to validate your
media before install to ensure a good download & write.

This doesn't update the files where they matter though: the ones that
matter are in the initrd (casper/initrd in this case). So you'd need to
unpack that (it's multiple cpio archives concatenated together, although
for testing this we can only care about the last one), overwrite the casper
stuff in there and pack it up again.

Something like:

mkdir /tmp/initrd
cd /tmp/initrd
(cpio -t; cpio -t; lz4cat | cpio -i ) < /mnt/casper/initrd
cp /path/to/new/casper scripts/casper # etc
find . | LC_ALL=C sort | cpio -R 0:0 -o -H newc | gzip > ../initrd.new
cp ../initrd.new /mnt/casper/initrd

(this is all extremely obscure, yes)

- I added 'persistent' to the kernel options in grub.cfg then tried to boot

All the above said, I didn't do anything to fix the problem you've hit
here.

I don't understand why find_cow_device is written the way that it is. I
guess it must pre-date us having udev in the initrd because you can check
for a filesystem with the right label now by looking in /dev/disk/by-label
now. And when looking at vfat partitions that might or might not have a
casper-rw file, if it finds that the partition is mounted it could check
for the existence of the backing file _before_ it does mount games that it
then might have to undo. I'll see if I can rewrite it :)

Cheers,
mwh

[Bug 883459] Re: KMail duplicates emails

2019-07-18 Thread Tom
This bug is happening to me using KMail 5.10.3 on Lubuntu 19.04. Four
emails that get moved into a folder via a filter get downloaded into
that folder over and over. I deleted 20+ copies of each message
recently, and now there are 8 more of each one.

I am downloading via POP3 from GMail.

[Bug 1836979] Re: Kodi crashes with “nouveau_vp3_video_buffer_create: Assertion `templat->interlaced' failed”

2019-07-18 Thread Tina Russell
** Description changed:

- I’m not exactly sure if this belongs here, libva, mesa, or upstream
- somewhere. But, it doesn’t seem to be a Kodi bug, buggy is that program
- is.
+ Buggy as Kodi is, this seems to be a problem specifically with mesa-va-

Kodi has worked just fine on my system, as recently as July 6th of this
year, but yesterday (July 16) I tried Kodi again: I got a blank screen

- (Another reason I’m guessing this is a Nouveau problem is because I

- bug, and then later encountered a distinct yet worse bug that locks up
- the whole system. So, now I’m back to using Nouveau.)
+ XBMC PPA) since its release in June, but in between July 6th and 16th, I
+ did upgrade the Mesa packages, from 18.2.8-0ubuntu0~18.04.2
+ 19.0.2-1ubuntu1.1~18.04.1. If I downgrade the “mesa-va-drivers” package
+ to 18.0.0~rc5-1ubuntu1 (the version in the base, non-updates Bionic
+ repository), however, Kodi works again, without even requiring me to
+ restart my machine. So, this is likely a problem with “mesa-va-drivers”.

  I tried looking in Xorg.0.log:

[ 17185.557] (II) NOUVEAU(0): EDID vendor "SEC", prod id 12620
[ 17185.557] (II) NOUVEAU(0): Printing DDC gathered Modelines:

1526 768 770 775 790 -hsync -vsync (47.4 kHz eP)

…that’s all that appears in the log when I try to load Kodi and a crash
  happens.

I’m using Ubuntu MATE 18.04.2 LTS 64-bit on a Compaq Presario CQ60; if
you need more information, I’ve attached a hardinfo report, too. I hope
this bug can get fixed, soon. Thanks!

Sweet mother of the Muses, I just downgraded the mesa-va-drivers package
to 18.0.0~rc5-1ubuntu1 (since that’s the one from the non-updates Bionic
repository) and Kodi works again! Then, this is a problem specifically
with the mesa-va-drivers package. I’ll have to update the description

2019-07-18 Thread Tina Russell
There was an update to Mesa over in the Ubuntu-X-Swat PPA today (by
which I mean the “Updates” one), from 19.0.2-1ubuntu1.1~18.04.1 to
19.0.8-0ubuntu0~18.04.1. …Sadly, as I discovered—after installing the
updates, then restarting and trying Kodi again—this bug is still present
and still works exactly the same.

(While I’m here, does anyone know how I would file a bug with the
nvidia-340 package? I mean, I don’t know how much we can do about that
driver, given its proprietary nature, but I want to try, at least. I
just want one of my graphics drivers working so I can use my media
player again… (sigh))

+ Changes string formatting of an error message, which should be

+
+ [Fix]
+ A simple tweak to snprintf() formatting from upstream would prevent
+ the theoretical buffer overflow being warned about. This needs applied
+ to disco and eoan; bionic and earlier are not affected.

[Bug 1837136] Re: ideapad_laptop disables WiFi/BT radios on Lenovo Y540

apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

I have a brand new LeNovo legion Y540 and the ideapad_laptop module
  results in a rfkill.

If the module is removed/blacklisted, then wifi works, but some ACPI
functionality is lost (the fans don't spin correctly and the laptop
  doesn't cool properly).

I will try to compile ideapad_laptop adding the laptop info to
  no_hw_rfkill_list[].

I only tried in ubuntu 19.10 (although this is a kernel issue)

  rfkill output:
  sudo rfkill
  ID TYPE DEVICE SOFT HARD
   2 bluetooth hci0blocked unblocked
   3 wlan phy0 unblocked unblocked
   4 wlan ideapad_wlan unblocked blocked
   5 bluetooth ideapad_bluetooth blocked blocked

[Bug 1797772] Re: ideapad_laptop disables WiFi/BT radios on Lenovo Y530

2019-07-18 Thread forevertheuni
I solved it in my Y540 by compiling a new ideapad_laptop with dkms
adding "legion Y54015IRH" to the no_hw_rfkill_list.

This post and bug 1811815 helped me quite a bit, so, thank you.

[Bug 1804542] Re: [SRU] Multiple intermittent socket failures during name resolutions

2019-07-18 Thread Bryce Harrington
I've packaged the patch from comment #9 into a PPA for testing purposes:

  https://launchpad.net/~bryce/+archive/ubuntu/bind9-sru-1804542

To test with this, first ensure you can reproduce the issue in a
reliably consistent way, then install this package and run it for a
similar period with similar conditions.

[Bug 1837161] Re: Bionic update: upstream stable patchset 2019-07-18

2019-07-18 Thread Kamal Mostafa
** Description changed:

  SRU Justification

  Impact:
The upstream process for stable tree updates is quite similar
in scope to the Ubuntu SRU process, e.g., each patch has to
demonstrably fix a bug, and each patch is vetted by upstream
by originating either directly from a mainline/stable Linux tree or
a minimally backported form of that patch. The following upstream
stable patches should be included in the Ubuntu kernel:

     upstream stable patchset 2019-07-18

- Ported from the following upstream stable releases:
- v4.14.87, v4.19.8,
- v4.14.88, v4.19.9,
- v4.14.89, v4.19.10

[Bug 1837160] [NEW] Syslog Filled with Millions of Entries per Hour with Stack Trace Ending in /org/gnome/shell/ui/animation.js and /org/gnome/gjs/modules/_legacy.js

[Sys Info]

Description:Ubuntu 18.04.2 LTS
Release:18.04
gnome-shell:
  Installed: 3.28.4-0ubuntu18.04.1

[Description]

I'm seeing several GB/day of syslog entries by org.gnome.Shell.desktop
/gnome-shell, causing the / partition to eventually run out of space
(which is how I found out about this). It is a repetition of the
following block over and over again.

[Reproduciblity]

So far as I can tell, simply logging in to the GNOME desktop starts the
logging sequence. Disabling shell extensions via Tweaks has no effect.

[From /var/log/syslog -- N.B. disregard "trusty", I'm running bionic]

[Bug 1837156] Re: Quietly "saves" invalid event (incidence) start or end times as midnight (particularly affects fr_CA (French Canadian) sub-locale)

2019-07-18 Thread Philippe Cloutier
I see that Launchpad allows to mark another package as affected.
Unfortunately, I cannot change the package. If someone can reassign this
to libkf5incidenceeditor, I will mark korganizer as also affected.

[Bug 1827442] Re: [MIR] libheif

2019-07-18 Thread Steve Langasek
Joachim, thanks for bringing this to my attention. I've gone ahead and
added libde265-examples to the exclusion list for main, and readded the
libheif build-dep to imagemagick in order to revisit this MIR.

Seth, can this go back in the queue for security team review?

[Bug 1833610] Re: minimum root partition size recommendation is too small

2019-07-18 Thread Brian Murray
** Changed in: ubiquity (Ubuntu)
   Importance: High => Medium

** Changed in: ubiquity (Ubuntu)
   Status: New => Triaged

** Description changed:

I tested installing Eoan with an iso dated 20190606 and in the advanced
- partitioning setup the minimum recommended partition root size (5.6 GB I
- believe). After the installation completed and I rebooted I was
+ partitioning setup the minimum recommended / partition root size (5.6 GB
+ I believe). After the installation completed and I rebooted I was
immediately presented with a dialog indicating there was a lack of free
space. There was only 74M of free space and it seems likely that updates
of debs and snaps will fail, let alone trying to install anything extra.

N.B. this is different than the minimum disk size which is actually 8.6
  GB for 18.04.2.
