[Bug 1837833] Re: EBS Volumes get stuck detaching from AWS instances

2019-08-15 Thread Matthew Ruffell
Hello @johannes-wuerbach

Thanks for the suggestion. I had a look at the patch you suggested:

commit 2181e455612a8db2761eabbf126640552a451e96
Author: Anton Eidelman
Date: Thu Jun 20 08:48:10 2019 +0200
subject: nvme: fix possible io failures when removing multipathed ns

The patch was backported to 5.2.3, 5.1.20 and 4.19.61, so I went and
tested it.

I did a quick test by booting mainline 5.2.2, reproduced the issue, and
then installed 5.2.3. I was able to reproduce the issue again,
suggesting that this commit does not fix the issue.

I then tried the latest 5.2.8, and also reproduced the issue.

Just to be sure, I backported the commit to 4.15.0-58-generic, and
tested again:

You can find the test kernel here:

https://launchpad.net/~mruffell/+archive/ubuntu/sf234512-test

I was also able to reproduce the issue, and I am confident that this
commit does nothing for this particular problem.

Thanks for the suggestion! But in this particular case that commit is
not the answer.

I have opened a ticket with AWS, and they have confirmed that they know
about the problem and have developed a fix for their cloud platform. It
is currently being deployed, and deployment will take a few weeks to
complete.

You might have been lucky and received a patched cloud machine at the
same time 4.19.61 came out, or it fixed another unrelated issue that had
the same symptoms.

Un-locking the screen/desktop now also takes much longer than it used
to. After correctly entering the password or scanning a fingerprint,
nothing happens for a long time, and then eventually the screen is
unlocked. Could that be related?

[Bug 1840386] Re: impossible calculate upgrade of version

2019-08-15 Thread Chris Guiver
Hi Melissa

I'll firstly provide the following official wiki page
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/CleanUpgrade

The error message mentions the tool `ppa-purge` which is probably easiest if
you read a support site like
https://askubuntu.com/questions/307/how-can-ppas-be-removed, though other
Ubuntu wiki pages have examples too -
- https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuStudio/BackportsPPA
- https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuGNOME/HowTo/UpgradeGnomeShell
You'll have to know the names of the PPAs you added; looking in your sources,
or `history` can provide clues.

If you need support, please have a look at
https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/finding-help/712 (if this bug report is
converted into a question it'll convert to the last option in the list
on that page).

[Bug 1840080] Re: cloud-init cc_ubuntu_drivers does not set up /etc/default/linux-modules-nvidia

2019-08-15 Thread Scott Moser
This is just a comment from a mostly uninterested third party, so take
it for what you will.

It sure seems to me that it makes more sense to make 'ubuntu-drivers'
take a '--accept-license' flag than to make cloud-init know some
seemingly arbitrary wizardry about writing "latelink=true" to a file in
/etc/default/linux-modules/nvidia.

[Bug 1840394] Re: Intel HDMI audio print "Unable to sync register" errors

2019-08-15 Thread Hui Wang
** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu)
   Importance: Undecided => Critical

** Description changed:

- 1) Power on system with Salomon
- 2) Connect an external DP or HDMI monitor via DP/HDMI port
- 3) check audio output
- 4) Disconnect external monitor
- 5) Suspend system via power menu
- 6) resume the system via press power button on system
- 7) Connect an external DP or HDMI monitor via DP/HDMI port
- 8) check audio output
- ** select output as HDMI/DP, click "Test Speakers"
- some error from dmesg
+ This fix is in the v5.3-rc3, and EAON already has this patch by backporting
stable, so
+ this patch is only for B/D.
+
+ [Impact]
+ After S3, the intel hdmi audio on a dell laptop print the error like below:
  [ 2052.030247] snd_hda_codec_hdmi hdaudioC0D2: Unable to sync register
0x2f0d00. -5
- [ 2064.937495] snd_hda_codec_hdmi hdaudioC0D2: Unable to sync register
0x2f0d00. -5
- [ 2074.867368] snd_hda_codec_hdmi hdaudioC0D2: Unable to sync register
0x2f0d00. -5
- [ 2086.902482] snd_hda_codec_hdmi hdaudioC0D2: Unable to sync register
0x2f0d00. -5
- [ 2116.339892] snd_hda_codec_hdmi hdaudioC0D2: Unable to sync register
0x2f0d00. -5
+
+ And the hdmi audio can't work anymore after this.
+
+ [Fix]
+ For Intel hdmi audio codec, it doesn't need to resume forcibly, because the
i915 side
+ probably is not ready to let hdmi codec work, since the intel hdmi audio uses
component
+ framework, let i915 control the hdmi codec.
+
+ [Test Case]
+ Tested on that dell laptops, the hdmi audio doesn't have any issues anymore
after
+ applying this patch.
+
+ [Regression Risk]
+ Low. We tested this patch on a couple of machines (dell and lenovo).

[Bug 1838133] Re: realtek r8822be kernel module fails after update to linux kernel-headers 5.0.0-21

2019-08-15 Thread Andrew Hamilton
I have a lack of experience dealing with kernel modules, so I know there
was a much easier way to build and test the module by itself, but I took
the long route and it seems like a success.

Grabbed source for Ubuntu kernel package 5.0.0-25. Output mentioned
patches to 5.0.0-25.26, if that means anything. Blacklisted r8822be,
patched rtw88 with the requested patch, built everything, checked lsmod
and see rtwpci/rtw88 instead of r8822be as intended, and wifi seems to
be working! Only weird thing is when I built the kernel it started
calling it version 5.0.18. I'm not really sure how kernel build
versioning works, so let me know if I did something wrong.

As a verification I ran update-initramfs against 5.0.0-25-generic (no
rtw88 patch) to apply the blacklist r8822be rule, loaded it, checked
that it's using rtwpci/rtw88, and I get no wifi as expected. Another
validation would be great, but it looks promising to me.

[Bug 1840386] Re: impossible calculate upgrade of version

2019-08-15 Thread Chris Guiver
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

The message

--
This was likely caused by:
 * Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu Please use the tool
'ppa-purge' from the ppa-purge package to remove software from a Launchpad PPA
and try the upgrade again.

If none of this applies, then please report this bug using the command
'ubuntu-bug ubuntu-release-upgrader-core' in a terminal. ..
---

looks like it applies. A quick scan of your sources and I can see four
different releases for packages (12.04, 17.10, 18.04, 19.04) so you
should first remove the Unofficial software packages not provided by
Ubuntu (PPA's are 3rd party sources not provided by Ubuntu) then try
again.

I've marked this as incomplete because unofficial sources are still
there. If you believe I am in error, please return this the status to
new and leave a comment as to why.

[Bug 1840386] [NEW] impossible calculate upgrade of version

2019-08-15 Thread MELISSA SANTOS BESSA
Public bug reported:

An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade.

 This was likely caused by:
 * Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu
Please use the tool 'ppa-purge' from the ppa-purge
package to remove software from a Launchpad PPA and
try the upgrade again.

If none of this applies, then please report this bug using the command
'ubuntu-bug ubuntu-release-upgrader-core' in a terminal. If you want to
investigate this yourself the log files in '/var/log/dist-upgrade' will
contain details about the upgrade. Specifically, look at 'main.log' and
'apt.log'.

Woraround with hdajackretask works. Shouldn't this be autodetected by now?

[Bug 1840382] [NEW] 18.04 version should be backported to 0.63

2019-08-15 Thread Michael Tanner
Public bug reported:

Package libcryptx-perl in Ubuntu 18.04 has version 0.056-1 from
universe. This package has a severe bug which was fixed with version
0.63. The bug causes issues with certain decryption.

Therefore I would like to request backporting the version 0.63 to 18.04.

I think the important change to get the decryption working was this one
(taken from the release notes of libcryptx-perl):

- improved CBC/ECB padding (using libtomcrypt's functions: padding_depad
+ padding_pad)

[Bug 1826405] Re: Repeatedly "storage error [503 Inconsistent file state], last errno: File exists

2019-08-15 Thread Steve Dodd
Well, touch wood, something I've done has made things happier. I moved
everything from the cache directory to a subfolder, made it
inaccessible, removed apt lists from clients and ran apt-get update,
then linked all the original cache files into _import and made acng
reimport them.

The first time I did this, it didn't seem to help. After the second
time, so far, everything is OK. I also reinstalled the package and let
it overwrite my config, but looking at the actual uncommented options in
each version, they're basically identical. All very odd...

[Bug 1826405] Re: Repeatedly "storage error [503 Inconsistent file state], last errno: File exists

2019-08-15 Thread Steve Dodd
I was seeing the dreaded "503 Inconsistent file state" talking to the
canonical (sorry) package repositories. As I said, there are no explicit
upstream proxies, but who knows what the ISP is doing (this would be a
big argument in favour of running apt-get over https to my mind..)

Anyway, at the moment after a cycles of intelligent nuking (trying to
retain my cache contents while rebuilding it) things seem OK. I feel bad
for not going into full-on debug mode and trying to get to the bottom of
it, but I'm got a huge mountain of stuff to do and just needed this
working so I could get on :(

[Bug 1840379] [NEW] Amule crashes almost every time a file is just terminated (ending its downloads).

2019-08-15 Thread Aurelio Sánchez
Public bug reported:

This is an old error which I've been suffering since Xubuntu 14.04 and
with several packages of amule, using official ones, which may or may
not be a SVN compilation. In this system, with a freshly install of
Xubuntu 18.04 and installed from Universe repositories as version
1:2.3.2-2, behaves just the same as it behaved with a SVN version in
16.04. Not always, and without apparent indication of why, when a
download ends (the file is at 100% and it is in the process of
rebuilding the file) the error happens. You can continue, but it will
appear again and again, until amule crashes and closes. You can check
the "do not inform me of this error again" and then it continues and
finally crashes. Mostly, you find the computer without amule running and
checking the timestamp of its log file and the reported finishing time
for the files in it, and the timestamps of the recent downloads, it
appears that the error happens just the same as when you can see it
(being watching the program): at the end of certain downloads.

[Bug 1190990] Re: Xfce4 mess up with icon positions

2019-08-15 Thread Adalbert Hanßen
I still encounter this bug in

Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description:Ubuntu 16.04.6 LTS
Release:16.04
Codename: xenial
4.4.0-157-generic x86_64

the version of xfdesktop is:

$ xfdesktop --version

(xfdesktop:17981): Gtk-WARNING **: 23:31:18.354: Im Modulpfad »hcengine« konnte
keine Themen-Engine gefunden werden,
Dieses ist xfdesktop Version 4.12.3, auf Xfce 4.12.
Erstellt mit GTK+ 2.24.28, verknüpft mit GTK+ 2.24.30.
Optionen bei der Erstellung:
Schreibtischmenü: aktiviert
Schreibtischsymbole: aktiviert
Schreibtischdateisymbole: aktiviert
$

I have no idea what the shown warning means and how it can be
circumvented.

The strange thing is: Even after I have rearranged the icons (+ some
seconds later), the file dates are quite old except for
icons.screen0-1904x1018.rc, which is of today:

$ ls  -l ~/.config/xfce4/desktop/
insgesamt 44
-rw-rw-r-- 1 user user 713 2018-08-12 19:52 icons.screen0-1264x963.rc
-rw-r--r-- 1 user user 613 2018-01-27 14:30 icons.screen0-1424x839.rc
-rw-r--r-- 1 user user 361 2017-06-05 19:20 icons.screen0-1424x840.rc

-rw-r--r-- 1 user user 258 2017-06-05 19:20 icons.screen0-1424x859.rc
-rw-r--r-- 1 user user 524 2017-06-05 19:20 icons.screen0-1424x884.rc
-rw-r--r-- 1 user user 101 2017-06-05 19:20 icons.screen0-1440x900.rc
-rw-rw-r-- 1 user user 1763 2019-08-15 23:09 icons.screen0-1904x1018.rc
-rw-rw-r-- 1 user user 1759 2019-01-20 13:33 icons.screen0-1904x1019.rc
-rw-rw-r-- 1 user user 251 2018-02-10 16:41 icons.screen0-1904x1039.rc
-rw-rw-r-- 1 user user 1133 2018-09-24 15:27 icons.screen0-3184x1019.rc
$

after I had rearranged my icons, I made these files immutable, so lsattr
tells me

$ sudo lsattr ~/.config/xfce4/desktop/
ie-- /home/user/.config/xfce4/desktop/icons.screen0-1424x884.rc
ie-- /home/user/.config/xfce4/desktop/icons.screen0-1440x900.rc
ie-- /home/user/.config/xfce4/desktop/icons.screen0-1424x859.rc
ie-- /home/user/.config/xfce4/desktop/icons.screen0-1264x963.rc
ie-- /home/user/.config/xfce4/desktop/icons.screen0-1424x839.rc
ie-- /home/user/.config/xfce4/desktop/icons.screen0-3184x1019.rc
ie-- /home/user/.config/xfce4/desktop/icons.screen0-1904x1039.rc
ie-- /home/user/.config/xfce4/desktop/icons.screen0-1424x840.rc
ie-- /home/user/.config/xfce4/desktop/icons.screen0-1424x848.rc
ie-- /home/user/.config/xfce4/desktop/icons.screen0-1904x1019.rc
ie-- /home/user/.config/xfce4/desktop/icons.screen0-1904x1018.rc
$

despite that, the desktop icons were rearranged in two narrow columns at
the left screen border after a reboot!

My screen resolution is

$ xdpyinfo | awk '/dimensions/{print $2}'
1920x1080
$

and strangely there is no file for that!

[Bug 1840370] Re: Please use Debian packaging

2019-08-15 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for your bug report, that's not really a bug though. We
regularly rebase our packages on Debian and sync when possible, no need
to keep a report in launchpad for that topic so I'm closing it

Could you perhaps be a bit more specific in the bug tracker about how it
is totally broken?

It works fine for us (on Bionic), with the workarounds noted in this
bug, and in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/update-manager/+bug/1771914

Regards, Paul Boven.

[Bug 1840335] Re: Xenial update: 4.4.189 upstream stable release

2019-08-15 Thread Connor Kuehl
The following patches required some backporting:

* "tcp: be more careful in tcp_fragment()"

There was a bit of a delta in an if-statement here which required manual
adjusting to fit this patch in. I took the if statement from the patch.

* "x86: cpufeatures: Sort feature word 7"

This required some manual offset adjustments due to the differences in
what the patch context expected (just the stuff around the hunks were in
different orders.

The following patches were already applied:

* "block: blk_init_allocated_queue() set q->fq as NULL in the fail case"

* "x86/speculation: Prepare entry code for Spectre v1 swapgs
mitigations"

* "x86/speculation: Enable Spectre v1 swapgs mitigations"

* "x86/entry/64: Use JMP instead of JMPQ"

* "x86/speculation/swapgs: Exclude ATOMs from speculation through
SWAPGS"
