[Bug 1847704] Re: On upgrade to 19.10, Unity custom keyboard shortcuts stop working

2019-10-13 Thread Alistair Cunningham
I'm not talking about predefined shortcuts; I'm talking about custom
shortcuts that I created myself. Nor am I talking about the desktop or
file lens.

In any case, my custom shortcuts worked fine on this same laptop in
Ubuntu 18.04, 18.10, and 19.04. They only stopped working in Ubuntu
19.10. I don't see how this can be Lenovo's fault?

[Bug 1847882] Re: Excessive use of gnome-shell memory

2019-10-13 Thread Emanuele
Update: The problem of excessive use of memory I have at every start,
after a short time, about 1 hour of activity the memory in use of gnome-
shell goes to more than 1Gb.

I checked on the notebook with the same version of Ubuntu and the same
configuration: package version, extension version, then a 99% replica,
the gnome shell process is kept at about 234mb / 328mb of memory in use.

Hardware difference:
Notebook(no bug): CPU: Intel i3-6006, GPU: integrated Intel HD 520, session
Wayland.
Desktop(bug): CPU: Ryzen 2600x, GPU: NVIDIA gtx 750 ti (NVIDIA proprietary
driver 435.21), Xorg session.

[Bug 1847882] Re: Excessive use of gnome-shell memory

2019-10-13 Thread Emanuele
Update: I have disabled and removed all the additional extensions from:
/home/user/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions, after 3 hours of uptime, now
the ram is stable on the 200mb/300mb.
So I think the problem was caused by some extension.
I wonder, given the instability that extensions can have, if it is not wrong to
have them installed so easily to the user (gnome-software)?
Maybe keep only some popular and well tested repository extensions?

[Bug 1838751] Re: Suspend to RAM(S3) does not wake up for latest megaraid and mpt3sas adapters(SAS3.5 onwards)

2019-10-13 Thread Anand Lodnoor
Hi @kleber-souza,

Referring to the previous conversations by janitor,(where he said this
bug was fixed in the package linux - 5.3.0-12.13 Launchpad Janitor
(janitor) wrote on 2019-09-27:) i did follow the instructions provided
(https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed) to upgrade to the
kernel version 5.3.0-12-generic and tested.

But i see issue still exists. I doubt if i have picked the proper kernel
where the fix is provided.

@Could you please check whether the Disco linux kernel currently in -proposed
fixes this issue?
Would you please provide the link/attach the kernel image, i will test it again
quickly and get back to you at the earliest.

Thanks,

[Bug 1799444] myrepos: 1799444: received signal 1

2019-10-13 Thread Paul Wise (Debian)
I've bisected this issue and it is caused by this commit:

http://source.myrepos.branchable.com/?p=source.git;a=commitdiff;h=15e7a50ac16554a8eafe659cc28621fcbb388e5a

I've found that is a simple solution is to turn off pty size handling:

   my $pty = IO::Pty::Easy->new(handle_pty_size => 0);

I'm not sure if this is the correct fix so I haven't committed it yet.

[Bug 1847704] Re: On upgrade to 19.10, Unity custom keyboard shortcuts stop working

2019-10-13 Thread Khurshid Alam
It seems xkb/xorg keyboard modifier changed for your case (Lenovo has a
bad history). So already pre-defined shortcuts are not working like

Super + D = Desktop
Super + F = File Lens

So instead use Ctrl+Alt+x, Ctrl+Alt+F etc from control-
center->keyboard->shortcuts.

[Bug 1805468] Re: Snap mounts bloat system footprint by inactive apps

2019-10-13 Thread John Lenton
For the clutter in 'mount', you could add '-t nosquashfs' to the
options, either directly or via an alias. While you're at it maybe
include nocgroup, and possibly notmpfs in there. Having

alias mount='mount -t nosquashfs,nocgroup'

in ~/.bash_aliases is probably the easiest thing.

'findmnt' (or, if you're still using it, 'df') has similar options that
you can set to ignore things you don't want to see in the output.

As for the 'conquer system resources' bit, I ask you again if you've measured a
difference, or if you're just making assumptions.

[Bug 1181666] Re: gnome-shell randomly blocks mouse clicks from working in app windows

2019-10-13 Thread kohey
Yes, the issue still happens with 3.34.
My work around is to trigger the following script through a keyboard shortcut.
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.peripherals.touchpad send-events disabled
sleep 1
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.peripherals.touchpad send-events enabled
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.peripherals.touchpad tap-to-click false
sleep 1
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.peripherals.touchpad tap-to-click true

[Bug 1847704] Re: On upgrade to 19.10, Unity custom keyboard shortcuts stop working

2019-10-13 Thread Khurshid Alam
The shortcuts keys you use for your custom shortcuts are being used
somewhere else. Usually it should disable the old shortcut and enable
yours. But it seems it is not happening here. Did you reboot after the
upgrade? Please mention the installed version of Unity, unity-control-
center & unity-settings-daemon. To debug,

1. Install compiz-config-settings manager. Make sure you have unity
profile selected in preference.

2. Reboot & Recreate those shortcuts from system-
settings->keyboard->shortcuts->custom-shortcuts

3. Open terminal & run `unity-settings-daemon -r --debug`.

4. Wait for it to stop printing, then press enter couple of times to
separate the cursor.

5. Now press your custom shortcuts , you will some log printing on the
terminal.

6. Paste the output to https://paste.ubuntu.com/

7. When done, re-login.

[Bug 1769016] Re: nsswitch.conf doesn't specify 'resolve' to support systemd-resolved

2019-10-13 Thread Piotr Dobrogost
If systemd-resolve's stub DNS resolver is used (which I believe is the
case) then "resolve" directive is optional as DNS requests are routed to
this stub resolver (per the "standard" nss-dns directive) which acts
according to systemd-resolve's logic. I just wrote the above in the
following comment – https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/442598/how-
to-configure-systemd-resolved-and-systemd-networkd-to-use-local-dns-

[Bug 1586528] Re: Avahi-daemon withdraws address record

2019-10-13 Thread Ilya Brik via ubuntu-bugs
I wonder how do you , guys, declare the bug as invalid while the issue is
exists and it's still relevant.
You could at least call it duplicate with a reference to another issue, but
INVALID it is not.
To the point:
This issue is relevant for me on a freshly installed Kubuntu 19.04.
I tried to use the workaround proposed by @ronny, but it doesn't look as a good
idea:

sudo apt remove isc-dhcp-client

Sun 13 Oct 2019 13:45:45 IDT
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:

libisc-export1100 libkf5modemmanagerqt6 libndp0 libopenconnect5 libstoken1
libteamdctl0 libtomcrypt1 libtommath1 libtss2-esys0 libtss2-udev pptp-linux
Use 'sudo apt autoremove' to remove them.

[Bug 1768380] Re: segmentation error - core dumped

2019-10-13 Thread Rainer Schöpf
The error seems to originate in the call to the cuserid function in
loadsave.c. It returns an address that is not accessible. I suspect this
happeens because cuserid is not thread safe. The easiest workaround is
to not call cuserid at all.

Appended is a simple patch.

It looks like there were some changes made to the upstream kernel in
this area over the past few months, so I updated my kernel to upstream

will run with the 5.4.0-rc2 kernel for now. Hopefully, the changes that
addressed this issue will be applied to the next Ubuntu release.

[Bug 1827842] Re: pulseaudio should not load module-x11-bell in gnome-shell

Sorry (again) for the late reply.

I just got an opportunity to install a fresh ubuntu 19.04, so I thought
I would give a try to the patch... But on this fresh install, I do not
have the problem... (without even enabling proposed packaged).

I don't even understand *why* the x11-bell module is *not* loaded...
(I did install the ubuntu-sounds package, as this is a condition in

[Bug 1847902] [NEW] pam_nologin should optionally exclude users of the "wheel" group from its access restrictions

2019-10-13 Thread Maris Nartiss
Public bug reported:

During a remote system upgrade (18.04 to 19.04) something went south and after
reboot the machine is stuck at some place in its boot sequence. SSH works, but
trying to log-in with a sudo-capable user results in: "System is booting up.
Unprivileged users are not permitted to log in yet. Please come back later. For
technical details, see pam_nologin(8)."
As Ubuntu has moved away from full root users with passwords + allowing root
logins over SSH, I'm totally locked out from my remote system.

There is a bug reported for pam_nologin requesting to provide separate
exclusion mechanism but in the meantime it is possible to implement a
workaround to exclude administrative users from nologin restriction.

Here's the bug:
https://github.com/linux-pam/linux-pam/issues/42

And here is the workaround that should be implemented in Ubuntu:
https://github.com/linux-pam/linux-pam/issues/42#issuecomment-367450193

Hi Khairul and Julian:

I have sent the patch to lkml:

But we think Lenovo mixed up the touchpads PnP IDs in X240 series.

Please passing "psmouse.synaptics_intertouch=0" in kernel parameter.

Re: [Bug 1181666] Re: gnome-shell randomly blocks mouse clicks from working in app windows

2019-10-13 Thread Scott Palmer
I can confirm that I am still having this issue on 3.34 as well
(Manjaro).

This is shocking to me that anyone using Gnome to develop doesn't
encounter this bug at minimum of 5x per day. Or are Gnome developers
using MacOS and MBPs to develop like those in the lol "Linux"
Foundation.

[Bug 1847917] [NEW] WiFI keeps dropping packets (rtl8187b)

Since the driver version is always the same as the kernel version, I'm
blaming this on the kernel. This bug has only been plaguing me for two
days (I've been running Ubuntu on this machine for about five years), so
I'm it's also possible that some recent update or another is to blame.

lshw doesn't say much about my adapter, but I know it uses the rtl8187
kernel module. There's a sticker on the bottom of the machine with
mentions the adapter as being a rtl8187b device (emphasis on the "b" at
the end, as that's the chipset revision).

I've experienced this bug with Linux versions 4.15.0-65-generic and
5.0.0-31-generic.

Also, this bug only affects this particular computer. Other systems on
my network don't seem to be affected, so I'm guessing this is not a
router/switch issue.

PS: I've had the same issues with a Netgear WG111v2 USB adaptor. I
though I'd mention it, since it also uses revision b of the rtl8187
chipset. However, this as been an issue with this USB adapter for years,
whereas the laptop's adapter only started showing the same issue
yesterday.

[Bug 1720262] Re: gnome-screenshot Actions don't work in default Ubuntu 17.10 session

2019-10-13 Thread Futó Tamás
The above mentioned two buggy features (Take a Screenshot of the Current Window
and Take a Screenshot of a Selected Area) are still disabled via the
/usr/share/applications/org.gnome.Screenshot.desktop file in Ubuntu 18.04.3 LTS
which is a supported version right now.
Actually the commented out actions have a link in comments to this issue which
led me here.

I've tried enabling back these actions (then log out, then login). Then
the actions appeared on right clicking on the Screenshot icon but these
features still doesn't work. I can see on the mouse pointer that
something should happen (it changes to loading indicator), but finally
nothing will happen, I can't get the screenshot.

[Bug 1847834] Re: Eaon Ermine Live Server can not create mirrored root

2019-10-13 Thread Rob Thomas
This was being tested on a HP DL380g8, which does not have UEFI, only
BIOS.

There was no way that I could figure out to actually raid the root using
the Live Installer. It was trivial and worked as expected using the
normal Server installer.

I realise that UEFI actually makes it harder to mirror root, as it (used
to?) require manual hacking to get both devices into the UEFI boot
order.

This can be trivially verified on virtual hardware, simply create a VM
with two hard drives, and try to get both of them active so the VM will
boot with one of them missing.

[Bug 1847924] Re: Introduce broken state parsing to mdadm

2019-10-13 Thread Guilherme G. Piccoli
** Description changed:

- TBD - will update soon the LP with details, for now it's just for the LP
- number.
+ [Impact]
+
+ * Currently, mounted raid0/md-linear arrays have no indication/warning
+ when one or more members are removed or suffer from some non-recoverable
+ error condition. The mdadm tool shows "clean" state regardless if a
+ member was removed.
+
+ * The patch proposed in this SRU addresses this issue by introducing a
+ new state "broken", which is analog to "clean" but indicates that array
+ is not in a good/correct state. The commit, available upstream as
+ 43ebc910 ("mdadm: Introduce new array state 'broken' for raid0/linear")
+ [0], was extensively discussed and received a good amount of
+ reviews/analysis by both the current mdadm maintainer as well as an old
+ maintainer.
+
+ * One important note here is that this patch requires a counter-part in the
kernel to be fully functional, which was SRUed in LP: #1847773.
+ It works fine/transparently without this kernel counter-part though.
+
+ [Test case]
+
+ * To test this patch, create a raid0 or linear md array on Linux using
+ mdadm, like: "mdadm --create md0 --level=0 --raid-devices=2 /dev/nvme0n1
+ /dev/nvme1n1";
+
+ * Format the array using a FS of your choice (for example ext4) and
+ mount the array;
+
+ * Remove one member of the array, for example using sysfs interface (for
+ nvme: echo 1 > /sys/block/nvme0n1/device/device/remove, for scsi: echo 1
+ > /sys/block/sdX/device/delete);
+
+ * Without this patch, the array state shown by "mdadm --detail" is
+ "clean", regardless a member is missing/failed.
+
+ [Regression potential]
+
+ * There's not much potential regression here; we just exhibit arrays'
+ state as "broken" if they have one or more missing/failed members; we
+ believe the most common "issue" that could be reported from this patch
+ is if an userspace tool rely on the array status as being always "clean"
+ even for broken devices, then such tool may behave differently with this
+ patch.
+
+ * Note that we *proactively* skipped Xenial SRU here, in order to
+ prevent potential regressions - Xenial mdadm tool lacks code
+ infrastructure used by this patch, so the decision was for
+ safety/stability, by only SRUing Bionic / Disco / Eoan mdadm versions.

Yes; I can confirm that is root cause; IE removing that new line in
/lib/partman/lib/auto-shared.sh resolves the issue.

[Bug 1847944] [NEW] partman-auto 134ubuntu11 prevents installation from recovery partition

2019-10-13 Thread Mario Limonciello
Public bug reported:

Partman-auto 134ubuntu11 added a new check to try to resolve bug 1845571
but in doing so, broke OEM installation from hard disk.

OEM installation from hard disk will place the ubuntu ISO image into a
recovery partition and boot from that to install. It is preseeded such
that the free space will use an expert recipe to install into.

Reverting changes from 134ubuntu11 back to 134ubuntu10 fixes OEM
installation again.

Public bug reported:

== Comment: #0 - Murilo Opsfelder Araujo  - 2019-10-11 14:16:14 ==

---Problem Description---
Back-port the following patches to Bionic QEMU to improve NVMe guest
performance by more than 200%:

?vfio-pci: Allow mmap of MSIX BAR?
https://git.qemu.org/?p=qemu.git;a=commit;h=ae0215b2bb56a9d5321a185dde133bfdd306a4c0

?ppc/spapr, vfio: Turn off MSIX emulation for VFIO devices?

SSD Controller 172Xa/172Xb (rev 01)

Machine Type = AC922

---Debugger---
A debugger is not configured

---Steps to Reproduce---
Install or setup a guest image and boot it.

Once guest is running, passthrough the NVMe disk to the guest using the
XML:

host$ cat nvme-disk.xml

host$ virsh attach-device nvme-disk.xml --live

On the guest, run fio benchmarks:

guest$ fio --direct=1 --rw=randrw --refill_buffers --norandommap
--randrepeat=0 --ioengine=libaio --bs=4k --rwmixread=100 --iodepth=16
--runtime=60 --name=job1 --filename=/dev/nvme0n1 --numjobs=4

Results are similar with numjobs=4 and numjobs=64, respectively:

   READ: bw=385MiB/s (404MB/s), 78.0MiB/s-115MiB/s (81.8MB/s-120MB/s),
io=11.3GiB (12.1GB), run=30001-30001msec
   READ: bw=382MiB/s (400MB/s), 2684KiB/s-12.6MiB/s (2749kB/s-13.2MB/s),
io=11.2GiB (12.0GB), run=30001-30009msec

With the two patches applied, performance improved significantly for
numjobs=4 and numjobs=64 cases, respectively:

   READ: bw=1191MiB/s (1249MB/s), 285MiB/s-309MiB/s (299MB/s-324MB/s),
io=34.9GiB (37.5GB), run=30001-30001msec
   READ: bw=4273MiB/s (4481MB/s), 49.7MiB/s-113MiB/s (52.1MB/s-119MB/s),
io=125GiB (134GB), run=30001-30005msec

[Bug 1837934] Re: There is no warning to remove install media when rebooting

2019-10-13 Thread Chris Guiver
This is likely unhelpful, but Lubuntu doesn't use `ubiquity` (calamares
instead) and has had this issue awhile too. I just tested with current
2019-10-12 (22:30) ISO
(following cut/paste from QA-test comments)

hp dc7700 (c2d-e6320, 5gb, nvidia quadro nvs 290)
re-install with sole purpose of looking for
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/1837934 so as to make
comment. I have noted the behavior before (with xubuntu too), but when I asked
if it was an issue on IRC, didn't get response (or told it'd been noted before
[on xubuntu-devel I think]) so it was just noted in comments awhile in these QA
tests & then ignored...
