[Bug 1857271] Re: Focal 440.44-0ubuntu1 PRIME Sync not working

2020-01-15 Thread Berg Lloyd-Haig
@vanvugt I manually changed the PPA target to focal in the apt sources
list file:

cat /etc/apt/sources.list.d/graphics-drivers-ubuntu-ppa-disco.list
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/graphics-drivers/ppa/ubuntu focal main

I was doing this because I'm running the latest mainline Ubuntu kernels
as they have a bunch of driver fixes for my other devices. I also update
the linux-firmware package to a similar level to match the current
development distribution (i.e. focal). The focal packages are targeted
at these kernel versions, so I try to keep the kernel, graphics drivers
and linux-firmware packages in sync on my system for the expected
performance.

My guess is the nvidia drivers will get backported once they're tested
as working on the newer kernels for the latest/dev distributions.

I'm not an expert on this, just what I have come to understand, although
it may be entirely correct.

2020-01-15 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Perfect, thanks. It's now conclusive that extensions are not the
problem.

Given the stack trace mentions Wayland subsurfaces I guess you're just
the first to hit this crash.

Next please try avoiding MOZ_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1

Also note that upstream the mutter maintainer has been rewriting the
Wayland subsurfaces code recently. This might mean it's a recent
regression in 3.34.3, or it might mean this issue has already been fixed
in 3.35 (which you can't try yet, sorry).

[Bug 1859774] Re: Full screen window becomes "small" in the upper left of the screen...

2020-01-15 Thread Daniel van Vugt
This does still mean it's a bug in mutter/gnome-shell somewhere, but
probably not one we can realistically reproduce and fix any time soon.
Hopefully the bug stays away with a fresh monitors.xml, or with none at
all.

[Bug 1859774] Re: Full screen window becomes "small" in the upper left of the screen...

2020-01-15 Thread Rob Frohne
Thanks for working on this Daniel. Your supposition is likely an the
right track. Before I started on this consulting assignment (the
beginning of this year) I was using two external monitors, one on my
desk at home, and one at school. They were different. I also was using
some projectors in classrooms that were different yet. It really
behaves like some part of the system thinks the screen is smaller than
it is. Last year I was using 1920x1080, because I could put smaller text
on the external monitor. Now I have just this laptop, and so I changed
the resolution to 1600x900. I think that is about when I started
noticing this. I moved the monitors.xml, and rebooted. It hasn't
reappeared, and it sometimes took a little time before I noticed it, so
I'm not ready to say that fixed it. I'll let you know if it didn't and
supply you with the xrandr output then too.

Again, thanks for looking at this. It was kind of annoying, though I
could expand and contract the window, and that one would be good for a
while.

Rob

[Bug 1859649] Re: networking disruption on upgrade from 14.0.0 to 14.0.3

2020-01-15 Thread Dr. Jens Harbott
I agree that this is kind of expected behaviour, but I also think that
it would be good if Neutron could adopt the policy to at least bump the
minor revision number on version number updates, that would make it more
obvious to deployers that special care is needed. It should also be
accompanied by a release note.

@alexandru-avadanii Thanks for mentioning 'nopti' which made me realize
that there was something fishy about KPTI that I haven't paid much
attention before.

Also rebooting my machine after resetting the key so extensions should

2020-01-15 Thread Asif Youssuff
This crash just happened: 1859911

I still see those errant extensions inside of GsettingsChanges.txt, but
they don't appear in the GNOME Tweak UI, nor do I see them in
/home/asif/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions

I have no idea where they are on disk, and I would be happy to remove
them from disk if I knew where they were.

I also don't see them installed via apt.

I went ahead and reset the key via dconf-editor since it seems like
those are stale entries, so new crashes shouldn't have that set and
confound the situation.

I've ran 75 iterations of reboot/compile-kernel and encountered 3 gcc
segmentation faults. Unfortunately, my test didn't capture the dmesg log but
it's likely that these are due to the ECC problems we're (still?) seeing.

There was also another issue during one of the reboots which is probably
unrelated and due to a flaky BMC:

[Bug 1859389] Re: [SRU] should disable DKMS build against kernel v5.0.0 or above

2020-01-15 Thread You-Sheng Yang
** Description changed:

+ [Impact]
+ 7906 should be used against kernels not newer than v5.0, especially v5.3,
which has already known regression that fails Wi-Fi association.
+
+ [Fix]
+ Add "OBSOLETE_BY=5.0.0" to dkms conf.
+
+ [Test Case]
+ 1. Install packages in ppa:vicamo/ppa-1859389
+ 2. Modules will still be built, but the original in-tree kernel modules won't
be overridden. From `dkms status` one should find following warnings for
kernels >= 5.0.0:
+
+ WARNING! Diff between built and installed module!
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+ 7906 is meant for 4.15 kernels for Bionic. New models should have been
supported directly in 5.x kernels via SRU. So the regression potential should
be LOW here.
+
+ == original bug description ==
+
Ubuntu kernel v5.0 or above should have enough backports to enable AX201
family, there should be little reason one would need DKMS on such
systems. Besides, 7906 has been pretty outdated in comparison to what we
already have in kernel, actually it could even cause more problems than
  gains.

Therefore, for Bionic 4.15 kernels (-generic & -oem) we will still
recommends the use of this DKMS as v4.15 is even more outdated. For
Bionic hwe kernels (5.0) or hwe-edge (5.3) kernels, the use of this DKMS
should be obsoleted. Same applies to Disco/Eoan/Focal.

regression related to this bug.

[Bug 1859774] Re: Full screen window becomes "small" in the upper left of the screen...

2020-01-15 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks.

The only strange graphics-related issue I can see is that this system
has 22 (twenty two) known monitor layouts stored mentioning dozens of
different monitors. It's a mess and could easily cause this bug. Please
try moving the file ~/.config/monitors.xml to a different directory and
restart the system. You might then need to reconfigure the monitor
layout in Settings.

If the problem reoccurs then next please run:

  xrandr > xrandr.txt

and then attach the file 'xrandr.txt' here.

[Bug 1859259] Re: gnome-shell crashed with SIGSEGV in meta_surface_actor_get_texture() from meta_wayland_actor_surface_real_sync_actor_state()

2020-01-15 Thread Daniel van Vugt
The GSettingsChanges.txt in this bug and bug 1859890 both say you had at
the time of the crashes:

b'org.gnome.shell' b'enabled-extensions' b"['user-theme@gnome-shell-
extensions.gcampax.github.com', 'impatie...@gfxmonk.net',
'no...@maestroschan.fr', 'bingwallpa...@ineffable-gmail.com',
'dayni...@maze-n.github.com']"

I'm not sure how effective disable-user-extensions is as we have found
in other bug reports that buggy extensions can just ignore the disable
setting. Extensions need to be uninstalled to be sure.

It is also possible you have disabled extensions successfully and the
latest crash dump (bug 1859890) was just sitting on disk from before
that time. Hence removing extensions may have successfully stopped the
crash from occurring. Let's give it time and see if any more occur.

Also worth noting you are the only person reporting this crash right
now, which suggests it's caused by something uncommon.

[Bug 1859259] Re: gnome-shell crashed with SIGSEGV in meta_surface_actor_get_texture() from meta_wayland_actor_surface_real_sync_actor_state() from meta_wayland_subsurface_sync_actor_state()

2020-01-15 Thread Daniel van Vugt
The uncommon thing might be subsurfaces:

  meta_wayland_subsurface_sync_actor_state

which would be triggered by MOZ_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1. So maybe extensions
are not involved. We should wait and get a clean crash report from your
system while no extensions are installed, to be completely sure.

I still can't find any other reports of this crash from other people in
Ubuntu or upstream :/

[Bug 1859259] Re: gnome-shell crashed with SIGSEGV in meta_surface_actor_get_texture() from meta_wayland_actor_surface_real_sync_actor_state()

2020-01-15 Thread Asif Youssuff
Daniel,

The first line in GsettingsChanges.txt says:

b'org.gnome.shell' b'disable-user-extensions' b'true'

I globally disabled extensions via GNOME Tweak -- does this switch not
work?

I just now also removed everything inside of /home/asif/.local/share
/gnome-shell/extensions -- there was only one extension there (but it
should have been disabled anyway).

Now, the system offers only, that I choose every time the same.
But there is no point to set for: Choose the choice from the last logout.
In this case, the last action (shutdown, logout or restart) will be stored and
given as standard for the next "shutdown" and so on. I think, Windows XP has
the same feature included (not 100% shure ;-) because I have no Windows to test

Anyway. You suggest to add another action for "use the last action".
So we have:
(session)
-logout
-lock
-switch user
(system)
-shutdown
-restart
And the suggested:
- * use the last action *

Did I understand correctly?

[Bug 1834869]

2020-01-15 Thread Gerhard-p7
For me the solution was in the directory /etc/xdg/menus

As there Digikam was searching for an file applications.menu which
wasn't available there.

I symbolic linked the file kde4-applications.menu t0 applications.menu
which solved the problem. The "open with" menu was filled with the
expected applications.

so:
cd /etc/xdg/menus
sudo ln -s kde4-applications.menu applications.menu

Worked for me.

Hello,

it looks like the kernel you're using is not an officially supported ubuntu
kernel, can you install the latest Ubuntu HWE kernel [1] and try again?
   sudo apt-get install --install-recommends linux-generic-hwe-18.04

It should include the commit mentioned by Sebastien here in comment #2.

Thanks

Hi,
thanks for the bug report, but the question is not very clear.

You mentioned that in the title "snd_usb_audio not working in
5.3.0-26-lowlatency", however it looks like it contradicts with the
comment "The problem does not appear with kernel 5.3.0-26-lowlatency."

Can you tell us which version it's working and which is not?

Also, the link you provided here is not working.

[Bug 1853375] Re: net selftest psock_fanout fails on xenial s390x due to incorrect queue lengths

2020-01-15 Thread Po-Hsu Lin
** Description changed:

  == SRU Justification ==
The psock_fanout test is not very stable, stress tests shows a high
  fail rate here:
- * X - 44 failures out of 100, with 4.4 kernel on a KVM node
- * B - 33 failures out of 100, with 4.15 kernel on a KVM node
+   * X - 44 failures out of 100, with 4.4 kernel on a KVM node
+   * B - 33 failures out of 100, with 4.15 kernel on a KVM node

This is because of the unrelated background traffic which should be
  filtered out.

Also, the error message, "ERROR: incorrect queue lengths", is a bit
- misleading. It has been changed to "warning: incorrect queue lengths".
+ misleading. You can see this even the test has passed, it's not the
+ real cause of the failure. This message has been changed to "warning:
incorrect queue lengths" later.

  == Fix ==
  1. 2e7a7217 (selftests/net: cleanup unused parameter in psock_fanout)
  2. cc30c93f (selftests/net: ignore background traffic in psock_fanout)

The first patch has already landed in Bionic, and it can be
  cherry-picked into Xenial.

The second one needs to be backported to Xenial, but it can be applied
to Bionic with git am -C2.

  == Test ==
Patch tested directly on 4.4 / 4.15 KVM nodes.

  Stress tested 100 times with:
- i=0
- for idx in $(seq 1 100)
- do
- sudo ./psock_fanout &> /dev/null
- [ $? != 0 ] && i=$((i+1))
- done
- echo $i
+ i=0
+ for idx in $(seq 1 100)
+ do
+ sudo ./psock_fanout &> /dev/null
+ [ $? != 0 ] && i=$((i+1))
+ done
+ echo $i

  All tests have passed.

  == Regression Potential ==
Low, change limited to testing tools, not affecting actual kernel
  functionality.

[Bug 1853375] Re: net selftest psock_fanout fails on xenial s390x due to incorrect queue lengths

2020-01-15 Thread Po-Hsu Lin
** Description changed:

- s390x:
-
https://objectstorage.prodstack4-5.canonical.com/v1/AUTH_77e2ada1e7a84929a74ba3b87153c0ac
- /autopkgtest-xenial/xenial/s390x/l/linux/20191114_180123_738a0@/log.gz
+ == SRU Justification ==
+ The psock_fanout test is not very stable, stress tests shows a high
+ fail rate here:
+ * X - 44 failures out of 100, with 4.4 kernel on a KVM node
+ * B - 33 failures out of 100, with 4.15 kernel on a KVM node
+
+ This is because of the unrelated background traffic which should be
+ filtered out.
+
+ Also, the error message, "ERROR: incorrect queue lengths", is a bit
+ misleading. It has been changed to "warning: incorrect queue lengths".
+
+ == Fix ==
+ 1. 2e7a7217 (selftests/net: cleanup unused parameter in psock_fanout)
+ 2. cc30c93f (selftests/net: ignore background traffic in psock_fanout)
+
+ The first patch has already landed in Bionic, and it can be
+ cherry-picked into Xenial.
+
+ The second one needs to be backported to Xenial, but it can be applied
+ to Bionic with git am -C2.
+
+ == Test ==
+ Patch tested directly on 4.4 / 4.15 KVM nodes.
+
+ Stress tested 100 times with:
+ i=0
+ for idx in $(seq 1 100)
+ do
+ sudo ./psock_fanout &> /dev/null
+ [ $? != 0 ] && i=$((i+1))
+ done
+ echo $i
+
+ All tests have passed.
+
+ == Regression Potential ==
+ Low, change limited to testing tools, not affecting actual kernel
+ functionality.
+
+
+ == Original Bug Report ==
+ s390x:
https://objectstorage.prodstack4-5.canonical.com/v1/AUTH_77e2ada1e7a84929a74ba3b87153c0ac/autopkgtest-xenial/xenial/s390x/l/linux/20191114_180123_738a0@/log.gz

ag0xxx -

03:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Wireless 7265 (rev 59)

Similarly to above, my connection randomly drops, it looks like the
driver crashes. Toggling aeroplane mode (or rebooting) gets the wifi
working again.

[Bug 1859899] [NEW] Please add a ZFS gui

2020-01-15 Thread Hveem
Public bug reported:

Right now the only way is with CLI. I do know the CLI methods but simple
operations that I'd like to be able to see visually, like the RAID array or the
allocated drives with ZFS, pools, datasets etc would all be nicely placed in a
GUI that would double as an input to modify them.
There are GUI's that exist on Ubuntu for non-ZFS volumes, but since Ubuntu is
moving towards ZFS as a standard it only makes sense that a GUI would be
created for such tasks. It's nice to see things like your currently configured
cron jobs, like scrubs and disk usage etc..

A GUI for ZFS would be a tremendous advance in terms of expediency,
utility, and ease of use.

[Bug 1856608] Re: [Regression] usb usb2-port2: Cannot enable. Maybe the USB cable is bad?

2020-01-15 Thread Matthew Ruffell
Verification for the revert:

lab@hostname:~$ dmesg | grep "Cannot enable"
lab@hostname:~$ dmesg | grep "Maybe"

Booting the bionic kernel 4.15.0-75-generic on an affected system does
not trigger the warning messages. There are no complaints about
slowdowns or anything that are present when the offending commit is
present.

[Bug 1847937] Re: 'gpu has fallen off the bus' after return from suspend

2020-01-15 Thread Jonathon Padfield
Sorry for the delay in replying. I guess I missed a notification. I
guess it's using s2idle by default, yes.

jonpad@jonpad-laptop ~ $ uname -a
Linux jonpad-laptop 5.4.0-9-generic #12-Ubuntu SMP Mon Dec 16 22:34:19 UTC 2019
x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
jonpad@jonpad-laptop ~ $ sudo journalctl | grep "PM: suspend" | tail -2
Jan 16 08:51:52 jonpad-laptop kernel: PM: suspend entry (s2idle)
Jan 16 09:00:23 jonpad-laptop kernel: PM: suspend exit
jonpad@jonpad-laptop ~ $ cat /sys/power/mem_sleep
[s2idle] deep

Is it worth trying the latest set of nvidia drivers and seeing if that
fixes it? At the moment, I've blacklisted all the nvidea/nouveau
drivers, and the laptop just uses the intel chip.

[Bug 1857074] Re: Cavium ThunderX CN88XX Panic : Unknown reason

2020-01-15 Thread dann frazier
I built a kernel with the proposed patches[*] and ran a reboot/kernel
compile test on 4 systems. The tests survived 46 total iterations
(~12/system) before I interrupted. Two systems failed with "Synchronous
External Abort: synchronous parity or ECC error" errors.

I've reverted the systems back to 4.15.0-70 - the kernel before the
cpufeature/errata patches that caused this - to see if these SEA errors
are a regression.

[Bug 1859867] Re: The bluetooth gets started automatically whenever a network is selected after turning on the wifi.

2020-01-15 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Confirmed. I think the problem is that "airplane mode" doesn't really
exist. It's just the state in which all radios (reported by 'rfkill')
are set to soft blocked.

Yeah, gnome-shell ideally should be doing better here. Inverting
airplane mode is a mistake. It should only be enabling wifi.

[Bug 1859259] Re: gnome-shell crashed with SIGSEGV in meta_surface_actor_get_texture() from meta_wayland_actor_surface_real_sync_actor_state()

2020-01-15 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Asif,

Please try again. Bug 1859890 says you had the extensions enabled when
that crash happened:

b'org.gnome.shell' b'enabled-extensions' b"['user-theme@gnome-shell-
extensions.gcampax.github.com', 'impatie...@gfxmonk.net',
'no...@maestroschan.fr', 'bingwallpa...@ineffable-gmail.com',
'dayni...@maze-n.github.com']"

Assuming you have disabled the extensions then the crash in bug 1859890
might be from before or after you disabled them. So that's kind of good
-- there is no evidence of the crash happening WITHOUT the extensions.
Please uninstall them and keep them uninstalled. Then let us know about
any future crashes.

[Bug 1836858] Re: i915: Display flickers (monitor loses signal briefly) during "flickerfree" boot, while showing the BIOS logo on a black background

2020-01-15 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Yes, laptops don't experience this problem as much. Some not at all.
You're lucky.

The lack of Ubuntu logo will be a question for design if and when the
flicker-free option is ever enabled.
