[Bug 1853369] Re: [19.10] Boot hangs at "loading initial ramdisk"

2020-02-11 Thread You-Sheng Yang
Please add following kernel boot parameters and try again:

  initcall_debug ignore_loglevel=1 earlycon=efifb

Since you have neither access to console at early boot hang nor journald
that writes down kernel dmesg for further inspection, you may need to
take a picture of what's left on the screen at the end.

[Bug 1862895] [NEW] [focal][nvidia][gdm3] Xorg crashes when virt-viewer or remmina are used to connect to a windows10 VM

2020-02-11 Thread Dmitrii Shcherbakov

I observed the following on Eoan as well with nvidia drivers older than
440.

1) a windows 10 VM running in a qemu-kvm VM: pc-q35-3.1 machine type,
QXL + SPICE:

2) When a host is booted with `prime-select intel` observing guest video
output works fine with both virt-viewer (over SPICE) and remmina (over
RDP);

3) With `prime-select nvidia`

[Bug 1862888] [NEW] Boot hang on ASUS WS X299 SAGE

2020-02-11 Thread Steven Clarkson
Public bug reported:

[Impact]

Upstream kernels since 5.3 fail to boot on the ASUS WS X299 SAGE
motherboard with firmware version 1201. This is the result of an
infinite loop while trying to parse a malformed ACPI table. It is
suspected to affect other ASUS motherboards, but I have no first
hand proof of that.

This is particularly troublesome for bionic HWE installs, which
will then fail to boot after upgrading to the 5.3 series eoan
kernel.

[Test Case]

Try to boot an ASUS WS X299 SAGE computer with firmware version 1201.

Eoan and Focal kernels will fail to boot.

Upstream kernel 5.6-rc1 will boot succressfully.

[Fix]

Cherry pick upstream 2b73ea379624 ("x86/boot: Handle malformed SRAT
tables during early ACPI parsing")

[Regression Potential]

Low. Any system affected by this patch is already failing to boot.

** Affects: linux (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: Incomplete

[Bug 1862414] Re: lots of entries in vmware-vmsvc-root.log "[ warning] [guestinfo] GuestInfoGetDiskDevice: Missing disk device name;

2020-02-11 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
* [eab2f1a] Add vmtoolsd.service alias.
Debian's open-vm-tools.service is rather unsuaul and based on the
history of the package, so ship an alias.
  * [b2977cd] Rectify a log spew in vmsvc logging.
Upstream commit 4ee0bd3c8ead89541ab7d196fb54e940e397420d
When a LSI Logic Parallel SCSI controller sits in PCI bus 0
(SCSI controller 0), the Linux disk device enumeration does not provide
a "label" file with the controller name. This results in messages like
"GuestInfoGetDiskDevice: Missing disk device name; VMDK mapping
unavailable for "/var/log", fsName: "/dev/sda2" repeatedly appearing
in the vmsvc logging. The patch converts what previously was a warning
message to a debug message and thus avoids the log spew.

2020-02-11 Thread newman1097
Our vision for every child, life in all its fullness. Our prayer for
every heart, the will to make it so.We work toward a nation and a world
where every child experiences life in all its fullness. Where they are
protected, cared for how to sponsor a child in another country and
given the opportunities to become everything they’re meant to be.

[Bug 1862885] [NEW] Sometimes can't adjust brightness on Dell AIO

2020-02-11 Thread AceLan Kao
Public bug reported:

[Impact]
We already added retry on the backlight driver, but the scalar have to take
some time to activate panel during booting up, and 2 seconds seem doesn't
enough. So, it sometimes fails to get the response from scalar.

[Fix]
Enlarge the retry time from 2 seconds to 5 seconds.
We didn't observe the response time longer than 3 seconds, but to be more
confident, enlarge the value to 5 seconds.

[Test]
Verified on new Dell AIO platform.

[Regression Potential]
Low, increase the retry times doesn't hurt anything.

[Bug 1862876] Re: gnome-mpv crashes on starting - lubuntu 18.04.4 live media (inc. installed versions)

2020-02-11 Thread Chris Guiver
** Description changed:

A support request had me explore `gnome-mpv` on lubuntu 18.04.4 (i386)

I used the recent (RC) install media; and it crashes there too :(

I've tried this on a couple of boxes; occurs on each. It also occurs on
a recent 18.04.4 QA-install too (hp dx6120mt; the install was kubuntu
18.04.4 where I added lubuntu-desktop. On the installed (dx6120) box
when using KDE OR LXDE, `gnome-mpv` opens and sits there without issue
(why it possibly wasn't noticed earlier), but crashes when a file is
  selected.

On normal 'live' tests programs are only opened & then closed (no files
opened usually) thus why noticed so late. It maybe specific to type of
files opened, but all files tried caused `gnome-mpv` to crash (i usually
resorted to opening gnome-mpv from terminal as far quicker in testing
files instead of navigating with gui).

I tested the same thing on amd64 and didn't have an issue there (unless
  it's box specific)

  Failed on
  dell latitude d610 (pentium m, 1.5gb, intel i915) - i386
hp dx6120mt (mini-tower, pentium 4 dual core, 3gb, winfast clone of nvidia
7600gt) - i386
+ ibm thinkpad t43 (pentium m, 1.5gb ram, radeon x300) - i386

  No issue on
  hp dc7700 (c2d-e6320, 5gb, nvidia quadro nvs 290) - amd64

[Bug 1862835] Re: Unable to change laptop screen brightness or keyboard backlighting

2020-02-11 Thread Tim McNamara
I've removed the NVIDIA drivers and configured Ubuntu to use Nouveau.

  sudo apt-get remove --purge '^nvidia-.*'
  sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
  echo 'nouveau' | sudo tee -a /etc/modules

This hasn't fixed the situation. Altering the settings does not affect
the actual screen brightness (or the keyboard backlight).

/sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/actual_brightness doesn't change, although
the indicators do.

[Bug 1862846] Re: Crash and failure installing focal

2020-02-11 Thread Lee Trager
I agree a -b or -e should be used instead of -f. However pkname is a
valid column in lsblk. From lsblk --help:

KNAME internal kernel device name
PKNAME internal parent kernel device name

pkname not working is a regression which was introduced in util-
linux-2.34[1]. Upstream has fixed this[2].

  Failed on

[Bug 1856603] Re: fstrim on nvme / AMD CPU fails and produces kernel error messages

2020-02-11 Thread Seth Bromberger
Thanks. I read that but I'm 1) on eoan, and 2) already running a custom
kernel 5.3.10+ that has this fix. 1) should be an easy substitute, but
I'm really nervous about trying to shoehorn instructions from the
section following the one you quoted into a system that's already pretty
customized (and running in production).

I'm not expert enough in switching among different kernels to be
remotely comfortable with the instructions as they're currently laid
out, so I guess I have to wait for someone who knows what they're doing
to test this.

If it helps, I can tell you that I applied the diff that started this
whole thing and rebuilt the kernel and things have been working well
ever since.
