Just for the record - the only way I can boot 5.3.0-40 on the hardware
mentioned in previous message is to use the "nomodeset" parameter,
obviously leading to absence of GUI.

Which hardware are you on?
I'm seeing exactly the same behavior on Ubuntu 19.10 and KDE Neon on
Lenovo Ideapad S340-14API with AMD Ryzen 3200U / Radeon Vega Mobile Gfx
on board.
The 5.3.0-28 kernel works just fine, while 5.3.0-40 shows the following effect:
- on Ubuntu 19.10, booting never ends
Looks like this problem affects only 20.04 ?
I briefly had a similar issue on Monday where saving any PDF file open in
chromium would crash the browser before the save as dialog got a chance to
appear. But it's now gone, and I have verified that I can upload files too.
Tested on my work laptop
A recent sssd issue was opened re: libwbclient API version 15 [0].
Upstream sssd plan to deprecate the alternative winbind client library,
which is why they haven't implemented the 0.15 interface. The sssd
library version hasn't maintained feature parity for some years [1].

Thank you very much for your response! I did the procedure you described and it
solved the problem! Brightness function keys started working properly in Ubuntu.
I repeated this procedure on other ZBook Studio G5 laptops we have here and it
also did the job.
However! I have dual boot
