[Bug 1793640] Re: Pulseaudio fails to detect sound card, while timidity is installed

2020-06-02 Thread Ⅿⅰⅽhaeⅼ Ⅼutỵnskⅰ
Hit this issue when upgrading from Kubuntu 18.04 to 20.04.

Solution was to "sudo apt purge timidity timidity-daemon" and the audio
devices immediately were recognized by the system, didn't need to
reboot.

This happened on a bog-standard 2015 era Intel-based laptop, nothing
exotic.

This doesn't seem to be a linux kernel bug. Since the desktop is
Cinnamon, can you please test Ubuntu proper [1]?

At least I can't reproduce the issue on Dell Latitude 9510 + Dell WD19TB

[Bug 1880680] Re: [SRU] Pegjs should not provide nodejs.

2020-06-02 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
For the changelog I would *prefer* that each of the LP bugs have what
they actually fix in them. I understand that they're referred to in the
previous Debian entries, but the changelog is the primary user-visible
documentation of updates and it's nice if it's clear.

It *does* have all the relevant info, though.

[Bug 1868159] security audit

2020-06-02 Thread Alex Murray
I reviewed adcli 0.9.0-1 as checked into groovy. This shouldn't be
considered a full audit but rather a quick gauge of maintainability.

adcli is a command-line utility to join computers to Active Directory
domains, integrating with kerberos as well.

- CVE History:
  - No CVE history
- Build-Depends
  - libsasl2-dev, libkrb5-dev, libldap2-dev
- No pre/post inst/rm scripts
- No init scripts
- No systemd units
- No dbus services
- No setuid binaries
- binaries in PATH
  - /usr/sbin/adcli
- No sudo fragments
- No polkit files
- No udev rules
- No cron jobs
- Library unit tests are run during the build - these test both data
structure implementations as well as utility functions like calling out
to external programs, and more featured tests like kerberos
  authentication etc.
- No autopkgtests
- Build logs are pretty clean - only thing of note is that during linking
of adcli itself (and some of the unit tests) the following is emitted:

/usr/bin/ld: warning: libkrb5.so.26, needed by /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-
gnu/libgssapi.so.3, may conflict with libkrb5.so.3

- Spawns an external process to call out to samba to get samba data - but
this needs to be specified as a command-line argument so cannot be used
  to cross a security boundary.
- Involves a large amount of dynamic memory management via malloc() /
calloc() / asprintf() etc - this appears to be quite defensive and
appropriately checks bounds and errors etc.
- File IO is used when setting up a temporary kerberos configuration - file
paths are generated sanely and using mkdtemp(). umask is used to restrict
access to only the owner as well.
- Logging is done via warnx() etc - no obvious instances of format string
  vulnerabilities or similar.
- Environment variables used:
  - KRB5_CONFIG - used to specify an existing kerberos configuration when
generating a local temporary kerberos configuration
  - TMPDIR - used to determine where to locate the temporary kerberos
configuration
  - ADCLI_STRICT - used to abort() early during failures of precondition
checks - this is not set by default but is used during
development.
- No use of privileged functions
- Uses kerberos for cryptography / random numbers etc
- Uses of temp files via TMPDIR and mkdtemp() to ensure names are not
  predictable etc.
- No direct use of networking - is done via libkrb / libldap2 etc
- No use of WebKit
- No use of PolicyKit

- No significant cppcheck results
  - 3 issues found but all in the unit tests
- No significant Coverity results
  - There are a few minor memory leaks but for a cli util which is not
long-lived this is neglibigle. There are a few use-after-free issues
but these are all in the unit tests and would occur only during test
failure so again no need to worry about.

adcli appears well written and contains no glaring issues from a security
perspective. The maintenance history is perhaps a bit concerning but
assuming upstream are responsive to any possible security issues this
should be ok.

Security team ACK for promoting adcli to main.

[Bug 1881847] [NEW] If NFS server reboots, client somethings fails to remount the file system properly

2020-06-02 Thread Robert Dinse
Public bug reported:

If the NFS server reboots, sometimes client servers fail to re-establish
the NFS mount properly. This is using NFS v4.2. The client machine
will hang if I try to do a df when an NFS mount is in this condition.
Attempting to access a file will likewise hang indefinitely. This is a
problem with the stock 5.3.0.x kernel and it is a problem with 5.6
still. I have not tried 5.7 yet. I filed this against nfs-kernel, but
I am not 100% sure it is not nfs-common but there is some sort of
communications not happening between them.

[Bug 1881631] Re: arm64 Ubuntu kernel builds missing CONFIG_NLS_ASCII

2020-06-02 Thread Hui Wang
** Description changed:

+ The CONFIG_NLS_ASCII was already set to Y in the raspi-5.4 kernel
+ and bionic kernel by Juerg, now do the same change in the
+ raspi2-5.3 kernel.
+
+ [Impact]
+ users reported that the raspi ubuntu core has some problem to mount
+ filessytem, need to enable the NLS_ASCII and make it built-in.
+
+ [Fix]
+ change it from m to y just as the focal and bionic raspi kernel.
+
+ [Test Case]
+ building the kernel and boot the kernel, it could mount the
+ filesystem successfully.
+
+ [Regression Risk]
+ Low, just changing a kconfig to y from m.
+
+
Remounting log mounts in Ubuntu core are failing on arm64 builds due to
missing CONFIG_NLS_ASCII in the arm64 kernel build options.
This option is enabled on the other kernel builds but somehow was overlooked
on arm64 appears to affect our ability to access logs via journalctl with data
from prior to restart because certain mounts are failing.
Other Raspberry Pi kernel builds, such as the armhf build, have the option
enabled and so do not encounter the mount error.
The kernel option that needs to be turned on to resolve this is
CONFIG_NLS_ASCII. It needs to be set to either 'm' or 'y'. Most of the other
chips have it set to 'y', keeping it built-in.

[Bug 1875199] Re: [NUC8CCHK][HDA-Intel - HDA Intel PCH, playback] No sound at all

2020-06-02 Thread Kai-Heng Feng
Great! That means it's a regression, let's do a kernel bisection.

First, find the last -rc kernel works and the first -rc kernel doesn’t
work from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/

Then,
$ sudo apt build-dep linux
$ git clone git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git
$ cd linux
$ git bisect start
$ git bisect good $(the working version you found)
$ git bisect bad $(the non-working version found)
$ make localmodconfig
$ make -j`nproc` deb-pkg
Install the newly built kernel, then reboot with it.
If it still have the same issue,
$ git bisect bad
Otherwise,
$ git bisect good
Repeat to "make -j`nproc` deb-pkg" until you find the offending commit.

[Bug 1881832] Re: Ubuntu server 20.04 fails to get IP address from DHCP server (no network connectivity)

2020-06-02 Thread psl
** Description changed:

Ubuntu 20.04 server amd64, running as virtual machine on FreeNAS-11.3-U3.2.
Network interface was configured with driver VirtIO, and network interface is
bridged at FreeNAS.

The issue is that I have DHCP server in my LAN and Ubuntu installer gets
IPv4 address and applies updates from internet. Install process is OK.
- Once installation is finished, reboot is required but Ubuntu will not
- start, EFI issue has to be fixed first; Ubuntu on FreeNAS has problem
- with EFI, it has to be manually fixed; it is known issue, solution is
- here: https://www.ixsystems.com/community/threads/howto-how-to-boot-
- linux-vms-using-uefi.54039/
-
- Once EFI is fixed and Ubuntu boots, no IP address is assigned to enp0s4
- interface, so Ubuntu 20.04 server has no network connectivity. I can
- manually force IP address allocation with command "sudo dhclient enp0s4"
- and it works but that is just a workaround. IP address should be
- allocated automatically during server boot...
+ Once installation is finished, reboot is required but Ubuntu will start
+ but no IP address is assigned to enp0s4 interface, so Ubuntu 20.04
+ server has no network connectivity. I can manually force IP address
+ allocation with command "sudo dhclient enp0s4" and it works but that is
+ just a workaround. IP address should be allocated automatically during
+ server boot...

I have older Ubuntu machines on the same FreeNAS box and those work
fine, so I assume there is a bug in Ubuntu 20.04 and DHCP client is
broken or not reliable... :-( Some problem in netplan utility??
+
+ I tried to install fresh 18.04.4 to my FreeNAS box and I see the same
+ problem, no IP address is assigned during boot. That is strange because
+ old installation of 18.04 from the past works fine.
+
+ I tried to install 20.04 to VMware ESXi 6.7 and I see the same problem,
+ no IP address is assigned to the new instance (install is OK, but after
+ restart, no network connectivity, "dhclient ensp0s4" is working fine).
+
+ Summary is that I see similar problem on fresh installs of 20.04 and
+ 18.04, FreeNAS or ESXi. I can connect instances with "dhclient enp0s4",
+ so it looks like DHCP server works fine and there is no problem on
+ LAN...

[Bug 1881107] Please test proposed package

2020-06-02 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
Hello Colin, or anyone else affected,

Accepted zfs-linux into focal-proposed. The package will build now and
be available at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/zfs-
linux/0.8.3-1ubuntu12.1 in a few hours, and then in the -proposed
repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how
to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this
update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested, what testing has been
performed on the package and change the tag from verification-needed-
focal to verification-done-focal. If it does not fix the bug for you,
please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to verification-
failed-focal. In either case, without details of your testing we will
not be able to proceed.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in
advance for helping!

N.B. The updated package will be released to -updates after the bug(s)
fixed by this package have been verified and the package has been in
-proposed for a minimum of 7 days.

[Bug 1881687] Re: Desktop is blank after logging in without a monitor attached

2020-06-02 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks. Yes indeed the X server has zero monitors attached, but still
has a usable desktop area of 1024x768. For gnome-shell this just means
it won't draw any panel/launcher etc. Because it prefers to only do that
on the primary monitor, which there is none.

Next please report the bug to the gnome-shell developers at:

  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/issues

and then tell us the new issue ID.

[Bug 1877075] Re: gnome-shell crashed at xcb_io.c:260: poll_for_event: Assertion `!xcb_xlib_threads_sequence_lost'' failed

2020-06-02 Thread Daniel van Vugt
** Description changed:

  [Impact]

This is the #1 crasher of gnome-shell in Ubuntu 20.04, though it's
duplicated across multiple problem reports according to locale:

  https://errors.ubuntu.com/problem/4de3d315d9df1c9699bda54beafa8d52053c
  https://errors.ubuntu.com/problem/2251b638f7a6167772f922dc5916740522c5c22b

  https://errors.ubuntu.com/problem/4b78bc9730e8681f0c42fc2ecea14d03544394f0

  [Test Case]

None known. The plan is to just continue monitoring crash reports.
Still, we are confident this is the fix because:

- * The offending source code in libx11 tells us it is :) and
- * The crash only started in Ubuntu with gnome-shell 3.34, which is the
-exact release in which XInitThreads was removed from mutter.
+  * The offending source code in libx11 tells us it is :) and
+  * The crash only started in Ubuntu with gnome-shell 3.34, which is the
+    exact release in which XInitThreads was removed from mutter.

  [Regression Potential]

Low. We add a single function call that tells libX11 to enable thread
- safety. This same function call is one we had in bionic, cosmic and
+ safety. This same function call as one we had in bionic, cosmic and
  disco.

[Bug 1881832] [NEW] Ubuntu server 20.04 fails to get IP address from DHCP server (no network connectivity)

2020-06-02 Thread psl
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 20.04 server amd64, running as virtual machine on FreeNAS-11.3-U3.2.
Network interface was configured with driver VirtIO, and network interface is
bridged at FreeNAS.

The issue is that I have DHCP server in my LAN and Ubuntu installer gets
IPv4 address and applies updates from internet. Install process is OK.
Once installation is finished, reboot is required but Ubuntu will not
start, EFI issue has to be fixed first; Ubuntu on FreeNAS has problem
with EFI, it has to be manually fixed; it is known issue, solution is
here: https://www.ixsystems.com/community/threads/howto-how-to-boot-
linux-vms-using-uefi.54039/

Once EFI is fixed and Ubuntu boots, no IP address is assigned to enp0s4
interface, so Ubuntu 20.04 server has no network connectivity. I can
manually force IP address allocation with command "sudo dhclient enp0s4"
and it works but that is just a workaround. IP address should be
allocated automatically during server boot...

I have older Ubuntu machines on the same FreeNAS box and those work
fine, so I assume there is a bug in Ubuntu 20.04 and DHCP client is
broken or not reliable... :-( Some problem in netplan utility??

[Bug 1878721] Re: memcached looks for SASL configuration at wrong path /etc/sasl2/memcached.conf/memcached.conf (18.04→20.04 regression)

2020-06-02 Thread Sergio Durigan Junior
** Description changed:

  [Impact]

memcached 1.5.22 in focal has a bug where it looks for its SASL
  configuration at /etc/sasl2/memcached.conf/memcached.conf instead of
/etc/sasl2/memcached.conf. This causes a memcached setup with
authentication that was working in bionic to fail in focal.

The bug was introduced upstream in 1.5.7~3:
+

https://github.com/memcached/memcached/commit/39151c870c5e598f039714bdb790bd46f614856e
+
https://github.com/memcached/memcached/commit/80dd99d831535ddeec73d55a0adcaeaac8cb7298
  https://github.com/memcached/memcached/pull/366
+
  and fixed upstream in 1.6.0~15:
+

https://github.com/memcached/memcached/commit/6207330c2705fdb5f02de13b99a0d994f7c4f14a
+
+ The reason this bug happens is because sasl works with paths (i.e.,
+ directories) when determining which configuration files it should load,
+ whereas, after the two commits mentioned above (version 1.5.7~3),
+ memcached started to pass a full pathname (including the filename) of
+ the configuration file.
+
+ So, while in a "normal" setup memcached's configuration file would live
+ at /etc/sasl2/memcached.conf, meaning that memcached would tell sasl
+ that the config path is "/etc/sasl2/", with the buggy memcached sasl
+ would think that the configuration directory is
+ "/etc/sasl2/memcached.conf/", and would try to look for a
+ "memcached.conf" file inside it.
+
+ Users could workaroud this bug by creating a directory named
+ "/etc/sasl2/memcached.conf/". For this reason, the backported patch
+ also takes this workaround into account. The patch also accepts the
+ "/etc/sasl/" directory.

  [Test Case]

- apt-get install memcached libmemcached-tools libsasl2-modules sasl2-bin
- mkdir /etc/sasl2
- echo 'mech_list: plain' > /etc/sasl2/memcached.conf
- echo 'sasldb_path: /etc/sasl2/memcached-sasldb2' >> /etc/sasl2/memcached.conf
- echo bar | saslpasswd2 -p -f /etc/sasl2/memcached-sasldb2 -a memcached foo
- chown memcache: /etc/sasl2/memcached-sasldb2
- echo '-S' >> /etc/memcached.conf
- systemctl restart memcached
- memcping --servers=127.0.0.1 --binary --username=foo --password=bar
+ To test the fix, one can do:

- Succeeds in bionic (with no output); fails in focal with “Failed to ping
- 127.0.0.1:11211 UNKNOWN READ FAILURE” or “Failed to ping 127.0.0.1:11211
- WRITE FAILURE”; should succeed with the patch.
+ $ lxc launch ubuntu-daily:focal memcached-bug1878721
+ $ lxc shell memcached-bug1878721
+ # apt update && apt upgrade -y
+ # apt install -y memcached libmemcached-tools libsasl2-modules sasl2-bin
+ # mkdir -p /etc/sasl2
+ # cat > /etc/sasl2/memcached.conf << __EOF__
+ mech_list: plain
+ sasldb_path: /etc/sasl2/memcached-sasldb2
+ __EOF__
+ # echo bar | saslpasswd2 -p -f /etc/sasl2/memcached-sasldb2 -a memcached foo
+ # chown memcache: /etc/sasl2/memcached-sasldb2
+ # echo '-S' >> /etc/memcached.conf
+ # systemctl restart memcached.service
+ # memcping --servers=127.0.0.1 --binary --username=foo --password=bar

- If you want to test alternate locations for the SASL config file, here
- are all four locations that will now work by default:
+ With the last command, you should see an error like:

- • /etc/sasl/memcached.conf/memcached.conf: fails in bionic; accidentally
succeeds in focal; should succeed with the patch
- • /etc/sasl/memcached.conf: succeeds in bionic; fails in focal; should
succeed with the patch
- • /etc/sasl2/memcached.conf/memcached.conf: fails in bionic; accidentally
succeeds in focal; should succeed with the patch
- • /etc/sasl2/memcached.conf: succeeds in bionic; fails in focal; should
succeed with the patch
+ Failed to ping 127.0.0.1:11211 WRITE FAILURE
+
+ or:
+
+ Failed to ping 127.0.0.1:11211 READ FAILURE
+
+ You can also check its exit status:
+
+ # echo $?
+ 1
+
+ It is possible to test the workaround workaround mentioned in the
+ previous section by doing:
+
+ # mv /etc/sasl2/memcached.conf /tmp/
+ # mkdir /etc/sasl2/memcached.conf
+ # mv /tmp/memcached.conf /etc/sasl2/memcached.conf/
+ # systemctl restart memcached.service
+ # memcping --servers=127.0.0.1 --binary --username=foo --password=bar
+ # echo $?
+ 0
+
+ Using the fix provided, one can verify that both tests above will work.
+
+ Here are all four locations that will now work by default:
+
+ • /etc/sasl/memcached.conf/memcached.conf
+ • /etc/sasl/memcached.conf
+ • /etc/sasl2/memcached.conf/memcached.conf
+ • /etc/sasl2/memcached.conf

  [Regression Potential]

Low risk. The upstream patch is targeted and applies cleanly to 1.5.22.
It looks for the SASL configuration at both the incorrect and correct
paths, so even in the (unlikely) event that someone worked around this
bug by manually creating a configuration file at the incorrect path
/etc/sasl2/memcached.conf/memcached.conf, that will continue to be
  respected.

If there were to be a regression, it would likely manifest as an
authentication failure, which clients may display as a read or write
  failure,

[Bug 1881828] [NEW] Lenovo X1 Extreme screen never wakes up

2020-06-02 Thread Kelly Kane
Public bug reported:

Unreliably, but 9 times out of 10, if my screen goes to sleep on my
laptop it will never wake back up. Looking in kern.log I see this
output, scrolling on repeat, until I long-press the power button to shut
off the laptop. Happened occasionally in Ubuntu 19.10, now regularly on
20.04. Persisted with the nvidia proprietary driver as well as the open
source one. It has persisted across several official ubuntu packaged
kernel revisions. I got kernel taint down to "0" and it kept happening.
(Previously virtualbox and nvidia driver were in there.)

[Bug 1872564] Re: /proc/sys/kernel/random/boot_id rule missing from abstractions/nameservice

2020-06-02 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
You don't *have* to include the full output of the test cases when
verifying a bug (although, depending on how much output there is, it can
be nice).

I don't think it was clear that you *had* gone through the full test-
case in your verification comment - I'm not entirely sure what gave that
impression, but I think it might have been the combination of *some*
output (the apt/dpkg bit) and saying “the bug is fixed, thanks” without
making reference to the test case.

Thanks for testing!

(LP: #1881535)
  * Some tests enhancements:
- new tests for all the above
- allow setting a different local socket for debugging/tests purposes only
- ascii order datasets in golden files
  * Typos and messages fixes. Direct prints are not prefixed with INFO
anymore.
  * Refreshed po and readme with the above.
