[Bug 1883880] Re: fix non-8-bit x86 displacements breaking AVX512 builds on Bionic

2020-06-23 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
I got doko to have a quick look (as he is unavailable atm) which seemed ok.
This was mostly to hear from him if this was an overall horrendous idea (it
isn't) and not to check every line, so this should be ok as-is then.
Further as stated above all other pre-checks against the PPA are good as well.

I uploaded to bionic-unapproved for consideration by the SRU Team.

[Bug 1884865] Re: Broadcom Inc. and subsidiaries BCM43142 802.11b/g/n (rev 01) Not seeing any wifi support

2020-06-23 Thread Ubuntu Foundations Team Bug Bot
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a
specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu
in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source
packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs
about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your
bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage.
You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1884865/+editstatus and add the
package name in the text box next to the word Package.

[This is an automated message. I apologize if it reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

[Bug 1878340] Re: Backing device unattaches from caching device when hibernating into a swap file

2020-06-23 Thread tankmissile
Actually, a proposed solution that could work is disabling the caching
device on bcache before hibernating. See here for more details:

[Bug 1878340] Re: Backing device unattaches from caching device when hibernating into a swap file

2020-06-23 Thread tankmissile
>From looking deeper into this issue and reading the FAQ on the bcache
site, this appears to be a catch 22 issue. During resume, you are not
allowed to make any changes to the disk. However, with bcache, this can
be tricky: any read you make from a bcache device could result in a
write to update the caching device. Currently bcache has no good ways of
solving this. This means resume must finish before bcache starts.
However, if the resume image is on the bcache backing device, the image
must be accessed first. Using resume_offset to use the swap file on the
backing device must be updating the caching device, and subsequently
causing data loss. If I have reached the correct conclusion from the
data loss that occured on my system and the limitation listed on the
bcache FAQ, then that means swap files are not supported on bcache
period. With that in mind, bcache should not allow hibernation to occur
using swap files.

[Bug 1881942] Re: default configuration forwards sshd failures to port 7070

2020-06-23 Thread Steve Beattie
Hi John,

I'm not sure what's happened here, but the default
/etc/rsyslog.d/50-default.conf contains no such snippet (a pristine copy
is also stored in /usr/share/rsyslog/50-default.conf) and is managed via
ucf. The contents of a pristine version are attached.

Either another package you have installed has modified this config file
(and looking at the failban package and postinstall script, I don't see
anything there that would add anything like that.

Doing a limited google search on the comment string "# Transform and
forward data" turned up this recipe: https://devconnected.com
/geolocating-ssh-hackers-in-real-time/ ; is it possible that this was
added as part of a recipe you were following?

Thanks.

[Bug 1882774] Re: issues with secondary VMX execution controls

2020-06-23 Thread Matthew Ruffell
Also verifying this on Azure Cloud.

I enabled -proposed and installed qemu 4.2-3ubuntu6.3 on a Focal
instance.

$ sudo apt-cache policy qemu-kvm | grep Installed
  Installed: 1:4.2-3ubuntu6.3

>From there I executed the following:

$ sudo -s
# apt install qemu-kvm bridge-utils
# BR_NAME="br0"
# BR_ADDR="192.168.1.10"
# ip link add "$BR_NAME" type bridge
# ip addr add "$BR_ADDR"/24 dev "$BR_NAME"
# ip link set "$BR_NAME" up
# tap_name="tap1"
# br_name=$BR_NAME
# ip tuntap add $tap_name mode tap user $(whoami) multi_queue
# ip link set $tap_name up
# ip link set $tap_name master $br_name

Download a guest VM:

# wget https://cloud-images.ubuntu.com/focal/current/focal-server-
cloudimg-amd64-disk-kvm.img

Launch the VM:
# /usr/bin/qemu-system-x86_64 -cpu host -smp 2 -m 2048 -hda
focal-server-cloudimg-amd64-disk-kvm.img -device
virtio-net-pci,netdev=net0,mac=52:54:00:f5:be:83 -netdev
user,id=net0,hostfwd=tcp::60022-:22 -device
virtio-net-pci,netdev=net1,mac=52:54:00:c6:29:dc,mq=on,vectors=10 -netdev
tap,id=net1,ifname=tap1,script=no,vhost=on,queues=4 -display none -enable-kvm
-daemonize

QEMU successfully starts without error, and checking ps and logs shows
the QEMU VM is alive and well:

2500 ?Sl 0:31 /usr/bin/qemu-system-x86_64 -cpu host -smp 2
-m 2048 -hda focal-server-cloudimg-amd64-disk-kvm.img -device virtio-
net-pci,netdev=net0,mac=52:54:00:f5:be:83 -netdev user,id=

I can ping the VM and ssh in.

I am happy to also say this bug is verified.

[Bug 1680224] Re: auto.smb fails on Windows administrative shares

2020-06-23 Thread Rafael David Tinoco
I have uploaded fixes for:

Groovy
Focal
Eoan

and I'm uploading for Bionic.

Groovy contains the fix for "&" and "$"
Focal contains the fix for "$"
Eoan contains the fix for "$"
Bionic contains the fix for "$" (without the mem alloc changes since they're
not needed and SRU would likely not accept those without a specific test case
for them).

More information can be found in the merges linked to this bug.

Your kernel log seems to be reporting that the mouse is getting
disconnected and reconnected repeatedly. Is that you unplugging the

Sounds like there are two issues here:

So please choose one of those for this bug to be about. And if you like
then open a new bug for the other issue.

[Bug 1874933] Please test proposed package

2020-06-23 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
Hello Srinivas, or anyone else affected,

Accepted thermald into focal-proposed. The package will build now and be
available at
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/thermald/1.9.1-1ubuntu0.2 in a few
hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how
to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this
update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested, what testing has been
performed on the package and change the tag from verification-needed-
focal to verification-done-focal. If it does not fix the bug for you,
please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to verification-
failed-focal. In either case, without details of your testing we will
not be able to proceed.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification .  Thank you in
advance for helping!

N.B. The updated package will be released to -updates after the bug(s)
fixed by this package have been verified and the package has been in
-proposed for a minimum of 7 days.

[Bug 1872796] Re: gnome-shell animations are noticeably stuttery when the Ubuntu extensions are enabled

2020-06-23 Thread Daniel van Vugt

That's incorrect. The 'Extensions' app displays those from /usr/share
/gnome-shell/extensions/ as "Built-in" and you can toggle them via the
GUI (I just checked again on 20.04). An extension can be installed
system-wide and manually disabled per-user, via the GUI. If that's not
working for you then please log a new bug about the Extensions app by
running:

[Bug 1874933] Re: Performance workaround for Dell 7390 2-in-1 Ice Lake

2020-06-23 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
I've added the testcase to the bug description. That seems like a
sensible enough reproducer.

** Description changed:

  == SRU justification focal ==

  As reported here:

https://www.phoronix.com/forums/forum/linux-graphics-x-org-drivers/intel-linux/1174225-dell-xps-7390-intel-ice-lake-performance-hit-hard-by-a-linux-kernel-regression?view=stream

  This primarily impacts "Ubuntu 20.04 LTS (Focal Fossa)." as it switched to
5.4 kernel.
  The 5.4 kernel added support for "Processor thermal device", for Ice Lake,
which will expose the power tables (via PPCC).

  This system default "max RAPL long term power limit" is 15W. But this
  power table is specifying as 9W. So thermald will limit power to 9W.

  If dptfxtract is executed, then power limit will be higher than power up
  value, but most of the users will use out of the box setup. So this need
  a workaround.

  This workaround will ignore any power limit less than the power up power
  limit.

  This is addressed in thermald 2.1 with two commits:

https://github.com/intel/thermal_daemon/commit/f7db434293387c965e8d9141608f855893740e3a

https://github.com/intel/thermal_daemon/commit/c3461690eafb7304bf59a39fb02955a5154b3861

  I know 20.04 LTS uses 1.9.1. I can assist in backport if required.

  == Fix ==

  Two upstream commits to ease backporting:
     - eeadf7d2efe Restore to min state on deactivation without
   depending on hardware state
     - 9a6dc27879a Clean up the code and documentation

  Two upstream commits for the fix:
     - f7db4342933 Avoid polling power in non PPCC case
     - c3461690eaf Ignore invalid PPCC max power limit

  == Test case ==

- As reported here: https://www.phoronix.com/forums/forum/linux-graphics-x
- -org-drivers/intel-linux/1174225-dell-xps-7390-intel-ice-lake-
- performance-hit-hard-by-a-linux-kernel-regression?view=stream
+ Open two terminals:
+ -In the first terminal run the following command:
+"sudo turbostat --show PkgWatt"
+ -In the second terminal run some all CPU busy workload, like stress-ng or
mprime
+
+ After few seconds turbostat will show that power is capped around 9W.
+
+ Install the updated thermald, and repeat.
+
+ Now with this fix the power should be capped around 15W.

  == Regression Potential ==

  This fix involves changing the power limits logic so there is a potential
that this may affect change the throttling behaviour of other systems with
  poorly defined PPCC power tables because it now ignores the power limits
  less than the power up limits. Users will see their machines run faster
  and hence active cooling may crank up (e.g. fans) but I think the speed
  improvement outweighs the noise factor.

  Note that these changes are already in thermald 2.1 that is now in
  Ubuntu  Groovy 20.10.

[Bug 1884860] [NEW] How to set default applications has changed in Ubuntu 20

2020-06-23 Thread Geoffrey Hoffman
Public bug reported:

This page:

https://help.ubuntu.com/stable/ubuntu-help/net-default-browser.html.en

Says to Open the Activities overview and start typing Details.

That option no longer exists. I find it now on the left hand side, under
"Default Applications"

[Bug 1878721] Re: memcached looks for SASL configuration at wrong path /etc/sasl2/memcached.conf/memcached.conf (18.04→20.04 regression)

2020-06-23 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package memcached - 1.5.22-2ubuntu0.1

---
memcached (1.5.22-2ubuntu0.1) focal; urgency=medium

  * d/p/fix-bug-where-sasl-will-load-config-the-wrong-path.patch:
Fix the path from which SASL configuration is loaded. (LP: #1878721)
The bug happened because sasl expects memcached to provide a
path (i.e., a directory, not a filename) where the sasl
configuration file(s) is (are). However, memcached was passing
the filename (/etc/sasl2/memcached.conf) to sasl, which was
interpreting it as a directory, and looking for a configuration
file inside it (i.e., /etc/sasl2/memcached.conf/memcached.conf).
Users could workaround this bug by creating a directory named
/etc/sasl2/memcached.conf/, and putting the configuration file
inside it. This patch not only fixes this bug (by passing the
right directory, /etc/sasl2/, to sasl) but also supports the
workaround described above.

[Bug 1884856] [NEW] Chromium-browser is built with NEON on armhf (SIGILL, Illegal instruction)

NVIDIA Tegra20 is one of ARMv7 CPUs which do not support NEON instructions,
"vmov.i32 q8" is the ARM NEON instruction because q8 is the NEON register. Will
be great if the compiler flags could be changed back to what was used for the
deb packaging, thanks in advance!

[Bug 1884848] Re: sshguard.service uses wrong path for iptables; nothing actually gets blocked

2020-06-23 Thread Malcolm Scott
None of the machines I've upgraded to focal from bionic have a symlink
in /sbin/iptables.

$ namei -l /sbin/iptables
f: /sbin/iptables
drwxr-xr-x root root /
drwxr-xr-x root root sbin
 iptables - No such file or directory

However you're right that a fresh install does have them. I'm not sure
what is supposed to install the symlinks, but it doesn't seem to happen
on upgrades.

[Bug 1884848] Re: sshguard.service uses wrong path for iptables; nothing actually gets blocked

2020-06-23 Thread Seth Arnold
There should be several symlinks to make this work:

$ namei -l /sbin/iptables
f: /sbin/iptables
drwxr-xr-x root root /
lrwxrwxrwx root root sbin -> usr/sbin
drwxr-xr-x root root   usr
drwxr-xr-x root root   sbin
lrwxrwxrwx root root iptables -> /etc/alternatives/iptables
drwxr-xr-x root root   /
drwxr-xr-x root root   etc
drwxr-xr-x root root   alternatives
lrwxrwxrwx root root iptables -> /usr/sbin/iptables-legacy
drwxr-xr-x root root /
drwxr-xr-x root root usr
drwxr-xr-x root root sbin
lrwxrwxrwx root root iptables-legacy -> xtables-legacy-multi
-rwxr-xr-x root root   xtables-legacy-multi

Are you missing any of the symlinks?

Thanks

[Bug 1884854] [NEW] php-mapscript-ng missing mapscript.php file

2020-06-23 Thread sethg
Public bug reported:

When building the PHP MapServer module (SWIG) a mapscript.php file
should be generated - see http://www.swig.org/Doc4.0/Php.html#Php_nn1_1

I believe this should be included in the package.
I don't see it in the file lists at
https://packages.ubuntu.com/groovy/amd64/php-mapscript-ng/filelist (or previous
versions)

Thanks for bisecting, Ferry.
Hi Jarkko,
It looks like Ferry has tested v5.8-rc1 and the issue is still there.

that might fix the issue and it appeared first in v5.7-rc3.

[Bug 1884848] [NEW] sshguard.service uses wrong path for iptables; nothing actually gets blocked

2020-06-23 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

You have been subscribed to a public security bug by Seth Arnold (seth-arnold):

sshguard 2.3.1-1ubuntu1; focal

/lib/systemd/system/sshguard.service has:

ExecStartPre=-/sbin/iptables -N sshguard
ExecStartPre=-/sbin/ip6tables -N sshguard
ExecStopPost=-/sbin/iptables -X sshguard
ExecStopPost=-/sbin/ip6tables -X sshguard

iptables and ip6tables are now in /usr/sbin, not /sbin. So the sshguard
chain never gets created/deleted.

sshg-fw-iptables assumes that this chain exists, so it fails to actually
block any attacker:

Jun 23 22:54:18 fenrir sshguard[677248]: Attack from "192.0.2.1" on service 110
with danger 10.

[Bug 1875071] Re: [SRU] 2.45

2020-06-23 Thread Łukasz Zemczak
Hello Michael, or anyone else affected,

Accepted snapd into eoan-proposed. The package will build now and be
available at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/snapd/2.45.1+19.10 in
a few hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how
to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this
update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested, what testing has been
performed on the package and change the tag from verification-needed-
eoan to verification-done-eoan. If it does not fix the bug for you,
please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to verification-
failed-eoan. In either case, without details of your testing we will not
be able to proceed.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification .  Thank you in
advance for helping!

N.B. The updated package will be released to -updates after the bug(s)
fixed by this package have been verified and the package has been in
-proposed for a minimum of 7 days.

** Changed in: snapd (Ubuntu Eoan)
   Status: New => Fix Committed

[Bug 1822672] Re: popularity-contest is broken due to a bad merge with debian

2020-06-23 Thread Brian Murray
If I recall correctly this was discussed at a Foundations team meeting
in September of 2019 where we decided not to prioritize fixing it
because it has been broken since 18.04 LTS and as far as we know nothing
is consuming the popcon data.

[Bug 1884850] [NEW] Xorg server uses unacceptably large amounts of memory (and keep growing)

2020-06-23 Thread Wirawan Purwanto
Public bug reported:

Description: Xorg server uses unacceptably large amounts of memory (and
keep growing)

Ever since I upgraded to Ubuntu 20.04 (with fresh install) on my laptop
(Lenovo T450s, Intel Core i5-5200U, Intel HD5500 graphics), I have been
troubled by the way Xorg process uses memory.

Here is an example of memory usage of Xorg as a function of time. I
rebooted the laptop on June 17:

Xorg-usage-20200617a.txt:root1224  1.9  0.8 948408 98848 tty7
Rsl+ 10:38   0:05  \_ /usr/lib/xorg/Xorg -core :0 -seat seat0 -auth

Ssl+ 10:38   0:22  \_ /usr/lib/xorg/Xorg -core :0 -seat seat0 -auth
/var/run/lightdm/root/:0 -nolisten tcp vt7 -novtswitch
Xorg-usage-20200618a.txt:root1224  0.3  1.3 1143064 162584 tty7
Ssl+ Jun17   3:15  \_ /usr/lib/xorg/Xorg -core :0 -seat seat0 -auth
/var/run/lightdm/root/:0 -nolisten tcp vt7 -novtswitch
Xorg-usage-20200619a.txt:root1224  0.3  2.9 1432232 360700 tty7
Ssl+ Jun17  12:30  \_ /usr/lib/xorg/Xorg -core :0 -seat seat0 -auth
/var/run/lightdm/root/:0 -nolisten tcp vt7 -novtswitch
Xorg-usage-20200619b.txt:root1224  0.3  2.7 1313120 338656 tty7
Ssl+ Jun17  12:39  \_ /usr/lib/xorg/Xorg -core :0 -seat seat0 -auth
/var/run/lightdm/root/:0 -nolisten tcp vt7 -novtswitch
Xorg-usage-20200623a.txt:root1224  0.3  6.0 1944364 738596 tty7
Ssl+ Jun17  31:55  \_ /usr/lib/xorg/Xorg -core :0 -seat seat0 -auth
/var/run/lightdm/root/:0 -nolisten tcp vt7 -novtswitch

The filename indicates the date the "ps fuxa" command was run.
Contrast this against the memory usage of another Xorg process run for XPRA:

My desktop usage pattern:

* MATE desktop
* 4-desktop setting (standard default MATE when shipped)
* GNUCASH
* about 3 windows of terminal (each about 5-10 tabs)
* XPRA running Firefox web browser (to isolate web browser pixmap memory usage,
if that was the culprit)
* LibreOffice (several windows open at any time)
* using "redshift" to change the desktop color to red at night

I have never seen this before using Ubuntu 20.04 on this machine.
Before, when I was running Debian 8, I could run this machine for months
literally without Xorg memory bloating rapidly like this (but then I was using
xfce instead of MATE).
I viewed the output of xrestop, the pixmap memory usage is dominated by marco
and wnck-applet:

xrestop - Display: localhost
