[Bug 1890750] [NEW] Permission Denied when using SMB share as storage location

2020-08-06 Thread Tom Georgoulias
Public bug reported:

1. Ubuntu release

$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS
Release:20.04

2. Package Version

$ apt-cache policy deja-dup
deja-dup:
  Installed: 40.7-0ubuntu1
  Candidate: 40.7-0ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 40.7-0ubuntu1 500
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu focal-updates/main amd64
Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
 40.6-1ubuntu2 500
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu focal/main amd64 Packages

3. What I expected to happen

Configure an SMB share as the network location to save my backups. I am
using the same share that works with the Gnome File manager.

4. What happens instead:

I get a permission denied error when trying to use a SMB share as the
storage location.

This share is mountable and read/writeable through the same path when
accessing it with the Gnome File manager. Its unclear from the error
what causes the failure or what I should be doing differently. I set the
path to smb://mycloudex2ultra.local/bkup/, the folder to deja-dup and
enter the correct username, domain, and password in the pop up dialog.

Running with DEJA_DUP_DEBUG=1 shows the path as

DUPLICITY: . Args: /usr/bin/duplicity --include=/home/tomg/.cache/deja-
dup/metadata --exclude=/home/tomg/Downloads
--exclude=/home/tomg/.local/share/Trash --exclude=/home/tomg/.cache

--exclude=/sys --exclude=/run --exclude=/proc --exclude=/var/tmp
--exclude=/tmp --exclude=/home/tomg/snap/*/*/.cache
--exclude=/home/tomg/.var/app/*/cache --exclude=** --dry-run
--volsize=25 / gio+smb://mycloudex2ultra.local/winston-bkup/deja-dup
--verbosity=9 --archive-dir=/home/tomg/.cache/deja-dup --tempdir=/tmp
--log-fd=26

and reveals this error:

[Bug 1890725] [NEW] wacom tablet disturbs unity background, color scheme and keyboard shortcuts

2020-08-06 Thread Péter Prőhle
Public bug reported:

If I make a fresh 20.04 install from scratch, with the default gnome
desktop, then plugging the wacom tablet below does not disturb the
background, color scheme and keyboard shortcuts, like ctrl+alt+T give a
terminal.

But as soon as I upgrade this install with ubuntu-unity-desktop, and I
switch to use the corresponding LightDM, then the "system setting" (in
the upper right corner) is not able to handle the background (to set it
to a solid color, or a photo, it remains solid black), it is not able to
set the theme from the default dark to the lighter "radiance", and the
worst of all: the former keyboard bindings, like "ctrl+alt+T gives a
terminal" are no longer executed, they are still there in the listing,
we can change to what keystroke is e browser or a terminal is bind, but
will not work if I press the usual combination.

However, the tablet itself works immediately like a dumb mouse device.

This tablet is according to lspci: ID 056a:0378 Wacom Co., Ltd CTL-
6100WL [Intuos BT (M)]

Somehow plugging the Wacom to USB disables, paralyses a nice diverse
selection of features, but only in the case of Unity, and NOT in the
case of the default Gnome.

Unfortunately I had to time box myself from this issue while doing

I was able to reproduce the issue: after installing openbsd-inetd, tcpd

bionic.lxd20:12 up 1:47, load 0.28 0.46 0.50

So it is clear that the rpc-rstatd is the one to blame, as all clients
can receive info from older ubuntu versions. I was curious because there
were practically no changes in all related packages:

- openbsd-inetd
- tcpd (tcp-wrappers)
- rstatd

to justify a change of behavior so I checked syslog in the working
nodes:

when hostname is given:
xenial rpc.rstatd[2961]: connect from 10.250.97.142 (10.250.97.142)

when broadcast is attempted:
xenial rpc.rstatd[2965]: connect from 127.0.0.1 (127.0.0.1)

and when broadcast is attempted with remote bionic (works):
bionic rpc.rstatd[6264]: connect from 127.0.0.1 (127.0.0.1)
bionic rpc.rstatd[6267]: connect from 127.0.0.1 (127.0.0.1)

and there might be something related to UDP broadcast and lo
interface...

I backported:

openbsd-inetd 0.20160825-4build1
tcpd 7.6.q-30
rstatd 4.0.1-10

to bionic expecting to brake it and it did not happen =).

As I was running all as containers, on top of the same kernel, it is
likely some environmental thing related to how tcp-wrappers are dealing
with an UDP socket listening to broadcast.

Running inetd by hand (outside systemd scope) did not help also, the
broadcast request did not even arrive to the socket as it seems, just
the direct one:

(c)rafaeldtinoco@eoan:~$ sudo inetd -idl
pmap_set: 11 1 17 41139
pmap_set: 11 2 17 41139
pmap_set: 11 3 17 41139
pmap_set: 11 4 17 41139
pmap_set: 11 5 17 41139
ADD: rstatd rpcprog=11, rpcvers=5/1, proto=rpc/udp, wait.max=1.256
user:group=nobody:(default) builtin=0 server=/usr/sbin/tcpd
someone wants rstatd
2830 execv /usr/sbin/tcpd
reaping asked for
2830 reaped, status 0
restored rstatd, fd 7
pmap_unset(11, 1)
pmap_unset(11, 2)
pmap_unset(11, 3)
pmap_unset(11, 4)
pmap_unset(11, 5)

Checking tcpdump:

$ rup eoan.lxd and the eoan container shows:

20:46:39.145376 IP 10.250.97.227.57183 > 10.250.97.200.111: UDP, length 56
20:46:39.145486 IP 10.250.97.200.111 > 10.250.97.227.57183: UDP, length 28
20:46:39.145562 IP 10.250.97.227.51090 > 10.250.97.200.60135: UDP, length 40
20:46:39.150911 IP 10.250.97.200.60135 > 10.250.97.227.51090: UDP, length 132

$ rup with no args and eoan container shows:

20:46:42.906008 IP 10.250.97.227.42901 > 10.250.97.255.111: UDP, length
100

meaning that the broadcast address was simply ignored by eoan as it
looks like, while it was fully responded by the xenial container:

20:49:45.199018 IP 10.250.97.227.9 > 10.250.97.255.111: UDP, length 100
20:49:45.204090 IP 10.250.97.213.713 > 10.250.97.227.9: UDP, length 140

The only way I was able to reproduce something similar was if daemon
side was not listening (or have bind) the broadcast address...

My "tests" were done using netcat like:

# client

(c)rafaeldtinoco@eoan:~$ nc -b -u 10.250.97.255 8080
one
two
three

# server

(c)rafaeldtinoco@bionic:~$ sudo nc -D -k -l -s 10.250.97.255 -p 8080 -u -b
one
two
three

Still need to figure what takes rpc.statd not to bind broadcast address
in newer Ubuntu versions.

Maybe a helpful detail is that the complete rendering area can

I also just tried on Debian Bullseye and I could not reproduce the same
issue, so it looks like it is Ubuntu-specific.

vishnunaini, thanks for testing and the pointer to the reproducer.

I also went ahead and carried back the patch to bionic's ark as well,
and have uploaded it to the same ppa.

For xenial, the patch fails to apply because the passed archive entry
type is different, and it was not clear to me whether the older version
of the type contained an equivalent way to get access to the result of
the fullPath() method call.

[Bug 1890716] [NEW] xdg-mime query filetype index.html reports wrong type

2020-08-06 Thread Alex A. D.
Public bug reported:

For .html files `xdg-mime` reports wrong type. The culprit is the `"use
strict"` phrase which is used in JavaScript. It should not mistake .html
files for anything else except of text/html !

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
Run the following step by step in any folder:
1. $ echo "\"use strict\"" > index.html
2. $ xdg-mime query filetype index.html # -> application/x-perl - this should
be text/html!

@Giovanni Pellerano (evilaliv3): So while lack of any of these
(currently mainstream) hardening features is concerning with regards to
exploitation (especially the lack of ASLR in a generally non-highly
interactive exploitation context), my guess is that the upstream Python
build toolchain is just outmoded and buggy and package maintainers are
left holding the bag. Hanlon's razor.

2020-08-06 Thread Ubuntu Foundations Team Bug Bot
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a
specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu
in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source
packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs
about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your
bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage.
You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1890639/+editstatus and add the
package name in the text box next to the word Package.

[This is an automated message. I apologize if it reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

[Bug 1890672] [NEW] secure boot fails after upgrade to grub2-common 2.04-1ubuntu26.2

2020-08-06 Thread Kyle Larose
Public bug reported:

I've been using https://github.com/donbowman/ubuntu-secure-boot on my
18.04 system for secure boot for just over two years. It worked quite
well. This morning I did a dist-upgrade. Upon reboot, the system
complained that my kernel wasn't signed (something along the lines of
"$KERNEL has invalid signature.").

I was fairly sure my kernel was signed, and signed properly, so I was
somewhat confused. In the past, when I had messed this up, I was able to
use `set check_signatures=no` to get the system to boot into the OS.
This no longer worked; it is as though that flag is now being ignored. I
had to disable secure boot in the bios to proceed and debug the problem.

I upgraded to 20.04 in the hopes that that would fix my problem. I had
no success there either.

Searching around, I found this patch, which exists in a grub2 version
published recently in both 18.04 and 20.04:

+ [ Dimitri John Ledkov ]
+ * SECURITY UPDATE: Grub does not enforce kernel signature validation
+when the shim protocol isn't present.
+- 0097-linuxefi-fail-kernel-validation-without-shim-protoco.patch:

See the following for the full diff
http://launchpadlibrarian.net/490699204/grub2_2.04-1ubuntu26_2.04-1ubuntu26.1.diff.gz

The same can be seen in 18.04:
http://launchpadlibrarian.net/490699210/grub2_2.02-2ubuntu8.15_2.02-2ubuntu8.16.diff.gz

I downgraded my grub to the version prior to this change (2.04-1ubuntu26) and I
can now boot using secure boot.

Given that the patch I pasted above logs the same error I was seeing,
and given that the change in 2.04-1ubuntu26.2 (the most recent) only
touches the post install, I'm fairly confident in saying that the patch
I pasted introduced my problem.

Now, perhaps there is a problem with how the secure boot package I am
using working. I'd love to know what we should be doing differently if
so. However, given the check_signatures=no isn't working any more, and
it is in the official grub documentation
(https://www.gnu.org/software/grub/manual/grub/html_node/check_005fsignatures.html)
I think there's at least one bug here.

[Bug 1872059] Re: missing hardware/runtime info when reporing linux-firmware bugs via apport

2020-08-06 Thread Matthieu Clemenceau
The attached deb diff will fix issue this on bionic as of today with
latest apport on bionic being 2.20.9-0ubuntu7.16

** Description changed:

- linux-firmware doesn't install any package hooks for apport, so it will
- only carry some default items leaving hardware list, kernel messages
- unattached. Suggest symlink /usr/share/apport/package-hooks
- /source_linux-firmware.py to source_linux.py as other linux image debs
- do in bug 1847967.
+ Updated Description to match SRU requirements for bionic

- Test Case
- -
- 1) On an Ubuntu 20.04 LTS system run 'apport-cli linux-firmware'.
+ [Impact]

[Bug 1885414] Re: on flavours ubiquity: bootloader failed on /dev/vda

2020-08-06 Thread Jags Desai
@nrbrtx (Norbert)

Ok. Also, just to be extra clear, "Enable EFI" was NOT selected in the
VirtualBox settings, and the host machine is also with old-style BIOS
(no UEFI at all).

#1: Do I have to create two small partitions, (1) EFI system partition,
and (2) Reserved BIOS boot area... or just one, EFI system partition?

#2: From the link you provided, point #11 says, "Full drive space is
allocated for installation"

So does manual partitioning (meaning not allocating the full drive
space) blocked / not allowed anymore with Ubuntu / Ubuntu MATE 20.10
onward?

Thanks alot.

[Bug 1890654] [NEW] udev service does not log

2020-08-06 Thread Bill Yikes
Public bug reported:

By default udev is supposed to log to /var/log. In Ubuntu 20 it is not
logging. Logging was then explicitly enabled by uncommenting this line
in /etc/udev/udev.conf:

"udev_log=info"

After running "systemctl restart udev" and plugging in a USB drive,
there is still no udev log in /var/log. Yet /var/log/system shows that
a device was in fact attached.

[Bug 1885414] Re: on flavours ubiquity: bootloader failed on /dev/vda

2020-08-06 Thread Norbert
@Jags Desai (jagsdesai)

Installing without ESP partition seem to be currently impossible, so
please allow its creation and then GRUB will be installed on legacy
and/or EFI system.

The ESP partition was introduced after 18.04 LTS. For now all systems
have two partitions after installation - ESP and rootfs.

So please do tests correctly - as described in
http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/milestones/413/builds/218647/testcases/1300/results
for example.

Running Ubuntu 18.04.1 with latest stable kernel (5.4.0-42), but this
has been a problem since the upgrade from 16.04.

Since there are no issues with the workaround, it will remain in place
until the upgrade to 20.04.

[Bug 1885414] Re: on flavours ubiquity: bootloader failed on /dev/vda

2020-08-06 Thread Jags Desai
Bootloader installation still fails with Aug 06, 2020 ISO of Ubuntu MATE
Groovy 20.10 in a VirtualBox VM.

Host OS: Ubuntu MATE 20.04
VirtualBox Version: VirtualBox-6.1.97-139689-Linux_amd64

Right when I tried to partition manually there were warnings that I
never saw up until Ubuntu MATE Focal 20.04

Warning #1:
"No EFI System Partition was found. This system will likely not be able to boot
successfully, and the installation process may fail. Please go back and add an
EFI System Partition, or continue at your own risk".

and upon clicking "Continue", installer displayed:

Warning #2:
"The partition table format in use on your disks normally requires you to
create a separate partition for boot loader code. This partition should be
marked as a "Reserved BIOS boot area" and should be at leat 1 MB in size. Note
that thi is not the same as a partition mounted on /boot.

If you do not go back to the partitioning menu and correct this error,
boot loader installation may fail later, although it may still be
possible to install the boot loader to a partition".

I have submitted 2 similar bug reports on July 06, and Aug 01, bug report
#1886580 and #1889989.

Today, I could not submit bug report from within the installation as
Apport kept displaying a message, "Collecting problem information". I
waited for 20+ minutes but it did not bring a window from where I can
submit a bug report.

Here's Imgur album with 7 screenshots:

Reviewing the files from your upgrade attempt you seem to have enabled a
PPA that provides Xorg packages. This will prevent the upgrade as that
PPA contains package version numbers greater than the release to which
you are upgrading. You can revert the PPA by installing the ppa-purge
package from the official Ubuntu archive and then running 'sudo ppa-
purge ppa:oibaf/graphics-drivers'. After that you can try upgrading
again and if it still fails open a new bug report. Thanks and good
luck!

Get upgrade error 12.04 - 12.10 "Could not determine upgrade" - xorg from ppa
