[Bug 1893658] Re: Possible Memory Leak

2020-08-31 Thread Daniel van Vugt
You need to close your browser tabs and/or close some apps.

It's certainly possible Windows copes with such stresses better than
Ubuntu does. To investigate that further you might want to try adding
more swap space or even disabling swap, as some people claim the Linux
kernel performs better that way:

  sudo swapoff -a

If all else fails, please just reduce the number of browser tabs you
have open, close some apps, or add more RAM if your laptop allows for
more to be added.

[Bug 1893724] [NEW] safe-rm breaks upgrades from 18.04 to 20.04

2020-08-31 Thread François Marier
Public bug reported:

I upgraded from bionic to focal this weekend and discovered that one of
my packages (safe-rm) can totally break the 20.04 upgrade. Not sure how
reproducible it is (I only upgraded once), but I had to remove safe-rm
before manually restarting the failed upgrade.

It comes down to the fact that safe-rm takes over the rm command and
unfortunately is written in Perl so while Perl isn't quite working (e.g.
while it's being upgraded), the rm command is broken :/

I just pushed out a fix to limit the takeover to interactive shells only
(https://salsa.debian.org/debian/safe-
rm/-/commit/6dbe2adaed423f61464c343f8b9a1b1f42f721f4), but the real fix
which I'm hoping to get to in the next few weeks is to rewrite the tool
in Rust (https://bugs.launchpad.net/safe-rm/+bug/1854103) to avoid
depending on an interpreter.

That said, it's a pretty serious issue so probably the best thing for
20.04 might be to conflict on the package somehow to make sure it's
uninstalled prior to the upgrade.

I wasn't sure which package to file this bug against so please re-assign
if needed.

[Bug 1181666] Re: gnome-shell randomly blocks mouse clicks from working in app windows

2020-08-31 Thread Dominik Danieluk
The same issue here in Fedora32 gnome-shell 3.36.5. Alt+F2->(r) fixes
the issue for a while, but in some time it comes back. The mouse clicks
are inactive in the middle of the screen (horizontally), but seem to
work correctly on the left and right. For example in Chrome with 29 tabs
opened, first 11 tabs get correctly activated with the left click. The
tabs 12-20 are immune to the click and 21+ get again activated
correctly. of course the same thing happens in the other apps. For
example windows cannot be dragged when clicked within the 'dead' are,
however when clicked in first ~30% or last ~30% (horizontally) they are
dragged as expected. Let me know if you need any logs or other details.

[Bug 1861610] Re: 'Elan touchpad' not detected on 'Lenovo ThinkBook 15 IIL'

2020-08-31 Thread Almir Mulalic
You won't get any functionallity from ubuntu. Pointer events and 2
clicks that's it. Even though the touchpad get's recognized it get's
recognized as some hybrid ELAN device, which means no software can
detect it. I hope that there is something that you can do to "trick" the
kernel because the Arch distribution works flawlessly so it CAN be
recognized, but how, I really don't know.

proprietary drivers and 1 1080p monitor (the laptop panel) and 1 4k
monitor (Dell external).

#83 indicated that they changed things so that their PRIME settings were
"on demand" and that made things work for them, but my external monitor
just quits working when I change it to that.

Things work mostly as expected with the nouveau driver, but no scaling
really works under the proprietary driver. I would use the nouveau
driver but it seems very sluggish under any scaling factor.

That said, my issue isn't really about fractional scaling, FWIW. I want
to set the external display at 200% and set the internal one at 100%, a
configuration which doesn't require fractional. But doing this produces
200% on both panels reliably (and the percentage values in settings
reflect that both are set to 200%) under the proprietary drivers.

So right now I can effectively either choose from these three options:
a) use nouveau, make both displays work as I would like, but have a very
sluggish UI experience b) use proprietary and have text that's too small
to read for my old eyes on the 4K external monitor but have a usable
built-in display, or b) use proprietary to get reasonably sized text and
icons on the 4K external monitor but accept that the built-in monitor is
not very useful because its effective resolution is 960x540.

It seems that some people have gotten the combination of proprietary
NVIDIA drivers and scaling to work. I would try this on another system
to doublecheck but I don't have a machine handy with NVIDIA graphics
different than the one in my system (M2000M).

[Bug 1860826] Re: pam_unix(sudo:auth): Couldn't open /etc/securetty: No such file or directory

2020-08-31 Thread Sterling Butters
Would this bug cause a gnome-session initialization delay? My logs have
this error and technically everything "works" correctly but
initialization of the user session takes > 1 min. The greeter isn't
exactly fast either but definitely more tolerable. My systemd analysis
looks fine too. Really hoping this bug is the issue.

[Bug 1893658] Re: Possible Memory Leak

2020-08-31 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks. It's hard to tell because ps.txt is cut off on the right for
some reason. But it seems Google Chrome tabs are your main problem. I
suggest just close some tabs :)

Also Firefox and Skype are using significant memory so close those if
you can.

This does not appear to be a problem with Ubuntu.

[Bug 1867366] Re: hostnqn fails to automatically generate after installing nvme-cli

2020-08-31 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package nvme-cli - 1.12-1ubuntu1

---
nvme-cli (1.12-1ubuntu1) groovy; urgency=medium

  * d/compat, d/control:
- bump debhelper-compat to 13
  * d/control:
- add uuid-dev dep so 'gen-hostnqn' command works
- remove unneeded build deps
- add uuid-runtime as postinst may call uuidgen
  * d/rules, d/nvme-cli.postinst:
- generate /etc/nvme/host* files at install not build (LP: #1867366)

I backported the fix to 18.04 in my PPA:

but I don't have an easy way of testing the 18.04-20.04 upgrade so I'm

[Bug 1893728] [NEW] Ubuntu CVE Tracker krb5 1.17-6ubuntu4 CVE-2018-20217 false positive

2020-08-31 Thread Jani Flaaming
Public bug reported:

Information in shows that krb5 versions before 1.17 are vulnerable to
CVE-2018-20217.
https://people.canonical.com/~ubuntu-security/cve/2018/CVE-2018-20217.html

Based on Debian bug report, this is already fixed in 1.16.2 version:
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=917387

Ubuntu 20.04 LTS (Focal Fossa) includes version krb5 1.17.6:
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/focal/+source/krb5

Ubuntu CVE Tracker page shows that Ubuntu 20.04 LTS (Focal Fossa) doesn't have
a package where CVE-2018-20217 is fixed.
https://people.canonical.com/~ubuntu-security/cve/2018/CVE-2018-20217.html

Steps to reproduce:
This was found when examining AWS Elastic Container Registry Vulnerability
scanning results for a Docker image based on latest Ubuntu 20.04: Here is the
complete line from the report:
krb5:1.17-6ubuntu4 MEDIUM A Reachable Assertion issue was discovered in the KDC
in MIT Kerberos 5 (aka krb5) before 1.17. If an attacker can obtain a krbtgt
ticket using an older encryption type (single-DES, triple-DES, or RC4), the
attacker can crash the KDC by making an S4U2Self request.

It can be seen from the scan that the Docker image included krb5
bversion 1.17-6.

Expected:
No vulnerability finding.

Actual:
krb5 bversion 1.17-6ubuntu4 is reported as vulnerable to CVE-2018-20217.

[Bug 1888352] Re: use builtin dump_acpi_tables.py in hookutils

2020-08-31 Thread Yuan-Chen Cheng
** Description changed:

  1. add apcidump to hookutils.py:attach_hardware and use the builtin
dump_acpi_tables.py.
  2. remove explicit acpidump from oem-getlogs to use the builtin one.
  3. refine usage string in oem-getlogs.
+
+ To SRU to focal:
+
+ [Impact]
+
+ * for OEM project, lts is been used. And collect log is important.
+With built-in tool to get acpidump, we don't need to install
+extra tool in the end-customer's machine. That make it much
+easier for the oem process.
+
+ * By call built-in utility, we no lounger need to install extra
+tools to collect data that's both complete and convenient for
+HWE people to work on.
+
+ [Test Case]
+
+ * before this applied, run oem-getlog without install acpidump.
+we can't get the dump data. After this applied, we can just dump
+the data HWE need.
+
+ * test step: install the new package, run
+
+sudo -E oem-getlogs [-c case_id] to get the
+
+use apport-unpack to unpack the apport file.
+
+check the acpidump file. HWE people know much better on check
+the acpidump file. Give the dump_acpi_tables.py just updated and SRUed
+by HWE/ACPI/UEFI expert, it's pretty safe to do so.
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+
+ * Given the modification change the way to collect log, even it
+failed, it won't break apport itself. Just the collected log
+might contain data not so valid.
+
+ * Given acpidump mostly used by HWE/ACIP/UEFI expert, and they
+just reviewed and updated the dump_acpi_tables.py script, I
+believe it will have good quality.

[Bug 1892724] Re: Bump package epoch to 1 to ensure working upgrade path and transition to snap

2020-08-31 Thread Timo Aaltonen
Hello Olivier, or anyone else affected,

Accepted chromium-browser into focal-proposed. The package will build
now and be available at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/chromium-
browser/1:85.0.4183.83-0ubuntu0.20.04.1 in a few hours, and then in the
-proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how
to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this
update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested, what testing has been
performed on the package and change the tag from verification-needed-
focal to verification-done-focal. If it does not fix the bug for you,
please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to verification-
failed-focal. In either case, without details of your testing we will
not be able to proceed.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in
advance for helping!

N.B. The updated package will be released to -updates after the bug(s)
fixed by this package have been verified and the package has been in
-proposed for a minimum of 7 days.

2020-08-31 Thread George Mihai Lazu
Without testing the new kernel (I have 5.4.0-42-generic), I have tried
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=206411#c11, and then booted
to Windows, connected to a network, and powered off windows with the
"Fast Boot" option disabled in Power Options.

So far, with several reboots, the wifi works correctly. I will be
updating you if the issue reappears, but so far this seems to be a good
fix for me.

[Bug 1893438] Re: Cannot resolve users without an existing /etc/krb5.conf

2020-08-31 Thread Jean-Baptiste Lallement
Thanks for looking into this.

Testing is done in VMs, using dnsmasq for name resolution.

I set use_fully_qualified_names = False because I suspect a name
resolution issue, and wanted to try another setting than the default set
when the configuration file is created by realm. True or False doesn't
make any difference.

I'll enable the DNS on AD but it wouldn't explain why it works with
Fedora and not Ubuntu on the same setup (ie no DNS enabled on AD)

On Fedora, /etc/krb5.conf is not created by realm.

I'll enable debugging and provide more logs.

/focal-updates#n534

** Changed in: oem-priority
Assignee: Alex Tu (alextu) => Yuan-Chen Cheng (ycheng-twn)

** Description changed:

- An exception is randomly happening while ubiquity calling
cachedpkg.mark_install() [1].
- cachedpkg.mark_install() came from Cache class of python3-apt package.
+ This happen in oem project because we have lots pkg to upgrade during
+ installtion becuase the design of factory process need it.

- It looks a timing issue while ubiquity calling cachedpkg.mark_install(),
- and a retry can workaround it.
+ As package list have certain dependency, and the the order that we get
+ the pkg from the python set object is not good for underlying apt
+ engine, then exception will raise.

- The reproduce rate is be about 1/15.
-
- Looks there're 2 things can be improved.
- 1. improve the fault tolerance of Ubiquity while it calling external library.
- 2. impvove the fault tolerance of python3-apt.
-
- [1]
-
https://git.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/tree/ubiquity/install_misc.py?h=ubuntu
- /focal-updates#n534
+ A workaround fix is move those failed to next iteration and the fix test
+ pass as we try it in installation for like 50 times.

2020-08-31 Thread prafulla chandra kota
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected focal

** Description changed:

  Observation:

It is observed that finger print sensor is disabled after few failure
attempts not in sequence with a count of some number of attempts.

Is there any such count requirement of disabling Fingerprint sensor for
few seconds after some incorrect failure attempts not in sequence with a
count of "X" ?, it is observed failure with below sequence:

WF - wrong finger, CF - correct finger

WF, WF, CF, WF, WF, CF, WF, WF, CF, WF, WF, CF, WF, WF, CF, WF, WF, CF,
  WF, WF, CF, WF, WF

I have looked at fprintd service logs from host and didn't observed any
different commands received from host when the fingerprint is disabled
  for few seconds.

Need some clarity on behavior of this feature and if there is any
document or link explains the requirements of Fingerprint application
behavior will be helpful in understanding the host behavior.

Kindly let me know if i can provide any extra information.

  Thanks,

[Bug 1888598] Re: pulseaudio has is buggy with hdmi audio and sleep/wake

2020-08-31 Thread Tessa
after pacmd --list, when the system has woken from sleep, and now is on
the wrong sound output. note that it's not going to the internal sound
card at the moment, but the other hdmi device. even though looking at
the diff, it thinks the default sync hasn't changed, it actually is now
going to the wrong output, and i have to manually switch it to the other
hdmi/dp in the sound settings.

[Bug 1643706] Re: snap apps need to be able to browse outside of user $HOME dir. for Desktop installs

2020-08-31 Thread Patrick Dinklage
At our university, we use a network-mounted /home directory, but it is
inherently slow. Every employee is advised to store data that doesn't
have to be shared among all systems in their local /scratch directory
structure on that machine (desktops, practically), which is backed up
regularly. So there you have a perfectly valid reason for using neither
/home nor /media.

I'm speaking from an end user perspective, and it's completely
inconceivable that I cannot access arbitrary files on my system. I have
a snap application where I can hit "File > Open" in the menu, and the
dialogue displays my Ubuntu shortcuts. All of them point to locations
somewhere in /scratch. When I click on them, they don't open, and I had
all kinds of suspicions but this. So really, from a user perspective,
this is most definitely a bug.

Using symbolic links doens't work, and since I don't have root access to
the machine, I cannot simply re-mount devices. Is there any way to work
around this until the fix actually reaches users (Ubuntu 18.04, again
with no choice over the OS version)?

[Bug 1893612] [NEW] No audio in snap-editor on ubuntu 20.04

2020-08-31 Thread Sergio Callegari
Public bug reported:

The application is totally silent on my kubuntu 20.04 machine.
The same goes for the version of the application packaged in the snap store,
that corresponds to the stable branch.
The only version of the application that appears to be capable of delivering
the sound of the videos that are being edited is the appimage from the
developers github project, that is quite outdated, though.
To make the matter worse, the developer has currently closed the means to
report bugs "while the 0.2 branch of the application is in development". This
means that it is impossible to report bugs about either the 0.1.x stable branch
(packaged as a snap) and the 0.2 branch packaged as a deb.
