[Bug 1900141] Re: overlay: permission regression in 5.4.0-51.56 due to patches related to CVE-2020-16120
** Description changed: + SRU Justification + + [Impact] + + The backports to fix CVE-2020-16120 introduced a regression for overlay + mounts within user namespaces. Files with ownership outside of the user + namespace can no longer be accessed, even if allowed by both DAC and + MAC. + + This issue is fixed by the following upstream commit: + + https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?id=b6650dab404c701d7fe08a108b746542a934da84 + + This commit relaxes the check to remove O_NOATIME from the open flags + for the file in the lower filesystem when the overlay filesystem mounter + is not privileged with respect to the underlying inode, rather than + failing the open as happens now. + + [Test Case] + + The attached lp1900141.sh script reproduces the issue. + + [Where problems could occur] + + For the most part this patch restores previous behavior of allowing + access to these files while keeping the enhanced permission checks + towards the lower filesystem to help prevent unauthorized access to file + data in the lower filesystem. The one difference in behavior is that + files in the lower filesystem may no longer be opened with the O_NOATIME + flag, potentially causing atime updates for these files which were not + happening before. If any software expects O_NOATIME behavior in this + situation then it could cause problems for that software. However, the + correct behavior is that only the inode owner or a process with + CAP_FOWNER towards the inode owner is allowed to open with O_NOATIME (as + documented in open(2)). + + --- + We use unprivileged user namespaces with overlay mounts for containers. After recently upgrading our Focal kernels to 5.4.0-51.56 this breaks, one cannot access files through the overlay mount in the container anymore. This is very likely caused by some of the patches that were added in relation to CVE-2020-16120. The following commands allow to reproduce the problem when executed as an arbitrary non-root user: mkdir /tmp/test /tmp/test/upper /tmp/test/work /tmp/test/usr unshare -m -U -r /bin/sh -c "mount -t overlay none /tmp/test/usr -o lowerdir=/usr,upperdir=/tmp/test/upper,workdir=/tmp/test/work; ls -l /tmp/test/usr/bin/id; file /tmp/test/usr/bin/id; /tmp/test/usr/bin/id" The output when broken is this: -rwxr-xr-x 1 nobody nogroup 47480 Sep 5 2019 /tmp/test/usr/bin/id /tmp/test/usr/bin/id: executable, regular file, no read permission /bin/sh: 1: /tmp/test/usr/bin/id: Operation not permitted The expected output is this: -rwxr-xr-x 1 nobody nogroup 43224 Jan 18 2018 /tmp/test/usr/bin/id /tmp/test/usr/bin/id: ELF 64-bit LSB shared object, ... uid=0(root) gid=0(root) groups=0(root),65534(nogroup) These commands create a user namespace and within it mount an overlay of /usr to /tmp/test/usr and then try to access something in it. This works on Ubuntu Bionic with kernel 4.15.0-121.123 (note that this already includes a fix for CVE-2020-16120) and on kernel 5.4.0-48.52 but is broken on kernel 5.4.0-51.56, no matter whether on Bionic or Focal. So I strongly suspect that not the actual security fixes for CVE-2020-16120 are the cause, but one of the following two patches that according to the changelogs were applied in the same revision but only to 5.4, not to 4.15: ovl: call secutiry hook in ovl_real_ioctl() ovl: check permission to open real file The mail with the announcement (https://www.openwall.com/lists/oss- security/2020/10/13/6) lists these two commits as separate from the actual security fixes ("may be desired or necessary"). Is it possible to revert these two changes or fix them such that our unprivileged containers work again on Ubuntu kernel 5.4? Or is there a workaround that I can add to my container solution such that this use case works again? [Bug 1909622] Re: lubuntu hirsute install; calamares error
Well, I mean, I guess we don't make any release notes about the fact that the other two sessions (Openbox, LXQt) will look and act really weird relative to what one expects for Lubuntu, so I'm inclined to leave it be. [Bug 1909043] Re: cannot upgrade mysql server package
Aside from reinstalling the package, you can try to overwrite your current apparmor profile with the one that is shipped by default in the package. Something like the following: # wget https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-security-proposed/+archive/ubuntu/ppa/+build/20337434/+files/mysql-server-8.0_8.0.22-0ubuntu0.20.04.3_amd64.deb # dpkg-deb -x mysql-server-8.0_8.0.22-0ubuntu0.20.04.3_amd64.deb mysql # cp mysql/etc/apparmor.d/usr.sbin.mysqld /etc/apparmor.d/ # apparmor_parser -r /etc/apparmor.d/usr.sbin.mysqld You will need to install the apparmor-utils package in order to get the "apparmor_parser" program. Also, bear in mind that this will *overwrite* your existing /etc/apparmor.d/usr.sbin.mysqld file! Make a backup of it if you want. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1909043 Title: cannot upgrade mysql server package To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mysql-8.0/+bug/1909043/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1908846] Re: lubuntu focal.2 calamares fails to parse GeoIP results correctly in JSON (refile)
It's remotely possible that we might SRU this, so it might end up appearing in further point release ISOs, but I'm not very much in favor of it. Meanwhile, the "fix" will be updated release notes, which is in progress as we speak. Going forward, we're going to look into some mechanism to update Calamares and its settings on launching the installer. This won't keep us from having to go through the SRU process, but it will mean that we won't have to respin ISOs to get installer-releated fixes in place. ** Changed in: calamares (Ubuntu) Assignee: (unassigned) => Dan Simmons (kc2bez) ** Changed in: calamares (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed => In Progress -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1908846 Title: lubuntu focal.2 calamares fails to parse GeoIP results correctly in JSON (refile) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/calamares/+bug/1908846/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I have found this thread searching for a solution, and as this one is about 20.10, I thought that perhaps sharing that it also happened to a 20.04 installation recently may help. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1878045 Title: doing dist-upgrade got error related do Broadcom To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/bcmwl/+bug/1878045/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1907445] Re: bcmwl-kernel-source 6.30.223.271+bdcom-0ubuntu5: bcmwl kernel module failed to build
I just ran updates on my laptop... got error message: Error while applying changes pk-client-error-quark: Error while installing package: installed bcmwl-kernel-source package post-installation script subprocess returned error exit status 10 (313) I lost all of my wifi card in my MacBook Air. RECOVERY: For those like me, recovery can be a challenge. I didn't see how to get back to a older kernel while working through rEFInd boot manager but what got me out of this issue was. - Open Additional drivers (Super Menu, type 'Drivers' and select). - After scan for "Proprietery Drivers in Use"... switch option to "do not use this device" and apply. - Reboot and hopefully your Wifi is restored. I then ran all updates (sudo apt update & sudo apt upgrade). I went back to additional drivers and tried reinstalling... got error... but it appears to have taken... even after reboot. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1907445 Title: bcmwl-kernel-source 6.30.223.271+bdcom-0ubuntu5: bcmwl kernel module failed to build To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/bcmwl/+bug/1907445/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1909506] Re: lubuntu hirsute daily install failed - error message to large for screen
So that is the Desktop Entry that comes with Calamares rather than being our Ubuntu-specific one. Kind of like the Openbox session that comes with Openbox, we don't exactly support it. [Bug 1910434] [NEW] Better feedback when partitioning during installation and all 4 primary partitions are in use
Public bug reported: affects ubuntu During the installation procedure from a Live USB disk, I was installing Linux on a hard drive with Windows. During the partitioning step, I chose "something else" to keep Windows. Although I had already made extra unpartitioned space for Linux, it showed this space as "unusable" and wouldn't let me choose it for installation. The reason turned out to be that Windows was already using all 4 primary partitions, which is the maximum allowed for an MBR partitioning scheme, so I had to delete one. It would be good for the installer to inform users that this is the reason the unpartitioned space is unusable, rather than just greying out the button to create a partition there. New users might not be able to figure this out, and might not know about the 4 partition limit. This issue is important so that installation is as clear and easy as possible so that people won't be scared away from switching to Linux. Technically I was installing Linux Mint, but Mint takes this partitioning dialog from Ubuntu, so the issue exists for Ubuntu too. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1910434 Title: Better feedback when partitioning during installation and all 4 primary partitions are in use To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1910434/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1900935] Re: Support to upgrade Synaptic fingerprint firmware from LVFS
As per currently agreed SRU policy exception for fwupd: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/firmware-updates focal launched with 1.3.x, so only the 1_3_X branch should be added into focal archive. As mentioned there we track the stable branch in Ubuntu, so we shouldn't be backporting a plugin without associated other changes. This is very important as often daemon changes that are not obviously tied to the plugin may need to backport at the same time. So the options are either: 1) Get the synaptics fingerprint plugin backported into 1_3_X branch upstream and a new upstream 1.3.x release tagged. 2) Discuss with technical board to request to modify the exception to allow moving to the 1.4.x or 1.5.x release stream. In "general" I'm supportive of this direction, there are certainly other devices that are supported in upstream that it would be nice to support in LTS as well. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1900935 Title: Support to upgrade Synaptic fingerprint firmware from LVFS To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/oem-priority/+bug/1900935/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1908846] Re: lubuntu focal.2 calamares fails to parse GeoIP results correctly in JSON (refile)
So I apologizing for the invalid status on the previous bug. I think it was a bit premature, although it may be appropriate after all. Let me explain a bit. First off, as you can see in the issue, the problem was one specific to the GeoIP provider we were using, ipapi.co: https://github.com/calamares/calamares/issues/1540 You will also see there that as of v3.2.32 of Calamares that there is now additional debug information (mentioned in the issue): https://github.com/calamares/calamares/commit/d63e23b289f1f285d190c711ee296778bb7f5259 Unfortunately, that doesn't exist in versions before Hirsute, so I can't very well confirm that is the situation in this case, but it is highly likely. Additionally, the two changes that resulted in using Ubuntu's GeoIP service that are ultimately the fix for this problem weren't added until after Focal: https://phab.lubuntu.me/rCALASETTINGS01c0bcafc8f3b7c089a7e7d9a6ca2cb4b793e009 https://phab.lubuntu.me/rCALASETTINGS63230172e442ac55db7bc3ba0bd54f842c210edd tl;dr if we're going to fix this, it would have to be via an SRU of calamares-settings-lubuntu. The problem is getting it on the ISO. That is much harder. I guess we could get it in a point release, but is that worth the effort? I'm kind of thinking not. ** Bug watch added: Calamares Issues #1540 https://github.com/calamares/calamares/issues/1540 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1908846 Title: lubuntu focal.2 calamares fails to parse GeoIP results correctly in JSON (refile) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/calamares/+bug/1908846/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1909030] Re: [pulse bridge] Stuttered Audio Playback after xruns
Sorry for the delay, Anyway, the device is able to use 44k1 without problems and because VLC works fine we can probably rule out jack, and pulse too. Studio-controls is just a script that runs jack and adds bridges to it using software that is not a part of studio-controls so it is not studio-controls specific. Really, that leaves discord either not liking 44k1 or not being able to deal with large buffer sizes. It would be interesting to know what discord asks for when it opens the audio device. You can check this by stopping jack in studio-controls, make sure vlc is not running, run discord and while discord is running run: cd /tmp && wget https://community.ardour.org/files/adevices.sh && bash ./adevices.sh >adevices-pulse Attach adevices-pulse here or look at it yourself.
