[Bug 1908286] Re: Asus G732LWS | ALC294 | Speakers don't work on 20.04 or 20.10

2021-01-21 Thread Po-Hsu Lin
Hello,

Looks like you will need to install the corresponding linux-
modules-(kernel version) and linux-modules-extra-(kernel version)
package.

Please let us know the test result for these two kernels (and attach the
output from "dmesg" command)

Thanks

At least for the mentioned issue (Thanks Jaromir) d10e05f15d was in qemu
v3.1.0

The fixup is in
https://git.qemu.org/?p=qemu.git;a=commit;h=88f830745721ba8c9e9d2831c01045a6f130c1a6
which is in qemu >=5.1

On an otherwise identical system I can reproduce the issue:

1:4.2-3ubuntu6.11

$ qemu-system-x86_64 -nodefaults -S -display none -monitor stdio -chardev

1:5.1+dfsg-4ubuntu1~ppa4

$ qemu-system-x86_64 -nodefaults -S -display none -monitor stdio -chardev

qemu-system-x86_64: -tpmdev emulator,id=tpm0,chardev=chrtpm: tpm-emulator: tpm
chardev 'chrtpm' not found

So it seems to confirm that starting with 5.1 and later that particular issue
is gone.
My environment isn't necesarily useful for TPM. That other remaining issue
around the chardev that I have might not apply to you.

Could you give the qemu 5.2 from Ubuntu 21.04 Hirsute a try please in your
environment.
If it would work we can try to backport the changes to at least Focal+Groovy
I'd say.

[Bug 1905522] Re: Error in fresh install of Ubuntu 20.10 package grub-efi-amd64-signed 1.155.1+2.04-1ubuntu35.1 failed

2021-01-21 Thread Carl B.
I'm seeing something similar on an ASUS desktop PC (AMD socket FM2,
DDR3) which already has a few dual-boot options installed. I'm trying to
install groovy 20.10 using Ubiquity from the live CD/DVD/USB. The
installer goes through most of its paces, until it tries to install
GRUB. It then dies with a pop-up box:

Error installing grub-efi-amd64-signed

installed grub-efi-amd64-signed package post-installation script
subprocess returned error exit status 1

Attempting to install the package manually from a live desktop terminal window
also fails, with:

$ sudo su -
# chroot /target
# apt install grub-efi-amd64

giving:

Setting up grub-efi-amd64 (2.04-1ubuntu35.1) ...
Installing grub to /boot/efi.
Installing for x86_64-efi platform.
grub-install: warning: Cannot read EFI Boot* variables.
grub-install: warning: read_file: could not read from file: Input/output error.
grub-install: warning: vars_get_variable:
read_file(/sys/firmware/efi/vars/Boot000C-8be4df61-93ca-11d2-aa0d-00e098032b8c/raw_var)
 failed
: Input/output error.
grub-install: warning: efi_get_variable: ops->get_variable failed: Input/output
error.
grub-install: error: failed to register the EFI boot entry: Input/output error.

The workaround seems to be, while the installer is stopped at the error message
box but still open, launching a terminal window from the live desktop and
mounting efivarfs manually. At that point, apt may be used to install the
package, install grub, apt upgrade everything to the current release...
whatever.

 sudo su -
 chroot /mount/target
 sh -c "mount -t efivarfs efivarfs /sys/firmware/efi/efivars; grub-install;
update-grub;
 apt install --reinstall grub-efi-amd64-signed

After that, I was able to reboot into Ubuntu 20.10 (groovy) from the
internal SSD.

Without that, I could try the installer any number of times and it would
always fail the same way.

bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=933523 looks to be related

bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub2-signed/+bug/1874315 might be as
well?

[Bug 1865515] Re: Chainbooting from grub over the network to local shim breaks chain of trust

2021-01-21 Thread Julian Andres Klode
Rod, yes the chain loading will still fail, the solution that works as
Dimitri pointed out is to exit 1, which these SRUs backport to stable
releases. Did you read the test case?

Shim chain loading can't be fixed in grub. And shims we can't touch
right now, also upstream does not really consider chain loading to
another shim to be a proper use case, and these places should use exit 1
or set BootNext and reboot instead.

[Bug 1908473] Re: rsyslog-relp: imrelp module leaves sockets in CLOSE_WAIT state which leads to file descriptor leak

2021-01-21 Thread Matthew Ruffell
Hi Mauricio,

It seems riscv64 passes on Groovy due to tests being skipped on the
riscv64 architecture.

>From Groovy's build log:

https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/NCJPDVSbSW/

If you look at the man page for dh_auto_test it mentions:

If the DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS environment variable contains nocheck, no tests
will be performed.

nocheck was added to riscv64 by default for all packages in Groovy as a
part of this change to dpkg in bug 1891686.

The test cases basic-realistic.sh and tls-basic-realistic.sh fail on
Focal because they attempt to send 100,000 packets between the server
and the client, and we get to various stages, like 00029000 msgs sent,
and now 00047000 msgs sent with some changes William made to the
builders, before it times out and assumes the channel is dead, and the
test fails.

https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/hwYXSbKPPV/

We aren't going to hit the 100,000 packets on riscv anytime soon. I
think I will open a new bug to adjust the packet counts from 100,000
down to 10,000 for basic-realistic.sh and tls-basic-realistic.sh, which
resembles what has been done for receiver-abort.sh and tls-receiver-
abort.sh.

[Bug 1912718] [NEW] update-manager: clicks do not toggle checkboxes for "Remove old kernels"

2021-01-21 Thread Mingun
Public bug reported:

Before introducing bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/update-
manager/+bug/1910556 that bug didn't exist -- I can toggle these
checkboxes and they will checked by default.

After fix of https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/update-
manager/+bug/1910556 checkboxes for "Remove old kernels" are not checked
anymore by default and I can't check them. If I run update-manager from
console, nothing logged.

Screenshot and video when I trying to click on checkboxes attached.

[Bug 1912708] [NEW] CONFIG_RANDOMIZE_BASE on powerpc / ppc64el

2021-01-21 Thread Seth Arnold
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

Public security bug reported:

Hello, it looks like CONFIG_RANDOMIZE_BASE is not set in our ppc64el
kernel configurations, based on running this in an rsync clone of
kernel.ubuntu.com::kernel-ppa-config/ :

grep CONFIG_RANDOMIZE_BASE $(find . -iname '*ppc*' | grep /linux/)

This returns no hits -- not even for a disabled feature -- which
surprised me a bit.

This webpage suggests power should have this kernel configuration
available after 5.5: https://cateee.net/lkddb/web-
lkddb/RANDOMIZE_BASE.html

Thanks

[Bug 1912614] Re: kASLR incorrectly described as disabled by default in Security/Features

2021-01-21 Thread Seth Arnold
Thanks for the corrections, lo-na-aleim. We've updated the wiki page to
reflect the KASLR features as they stand currently.

This wiki page is programmatically constructed: hand edits wouldn't
survive in the long run.

Note that the /proc/sys/kernel/randomize_va_space controls whether or
not the brk address space within userspace processes should be
randomized. Quoting from the Linux kernel source file init/Kconfig:

Randomizing heap placement makes heap exploits harder, but it
also breaks ancient binaries (including anything libc5 based).
This option changes the bootup default to heap randomization
disabled, and can be overridden at runtime by setting
  /proc/sys/kernel/randomize_va_space to 2.

I don't know off-hand a reliable programmatic tool available to
determine that the kernel has booted into a randomized base location, or
whether it randomizes memory slabs, etc. The /boot/config* files by
convention show the configuration of the kernel, but local
administrators may not observe this convention if they replace the
kernel.

Thanks

Please find attached the debdiff for Ubuntu 20.10 groovy. This includes
a similar set of patches to the focal set and has been picked from
between the 1.8.4 and 1.8.5 tags.

Let me know if anything has been done incorrectly or missed any commits.

I will leave it up to the security team to decide if Ubuntu should also
include the extra setuid patches provides by upstream in any of these
debdiffs.

[Bug 1912670] Re: Mouse buttons and keyboard unresponsive after idle time

2021-01-21 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks for the bug report. This sounds a power management problem.

1. If you have 'tlp' installed the please uninstall it. It's known to
cause bugs like this.

2. Try installing 'powertop' and then look in its 'Tunables' section. By
changing some of those to 'Bad' (which is actually better than 'Good' in
this case) you can stop them suspending so much.

3. The kernel team should have some more ideas. I will move this bug
there...

powerpc/64/signal: Balance return predictor stack in signal
trampoline

Returning from an interrupt or syscall to a signal handler currently
begins execution directly at the handler's entry point, with LR set to
the address of the sigreturn trampoline. When the signal handler
function returns, it runs the trampoline. It looks like this:

# interrupt at user address xyz
# kernel stuff... signal is raised
rfid
# void handler(int sig)
addis 2,12,.TOC.-.LCF0@ha
addi 2,2,.TOC.-.LCF0@l
mflr 0
std 0,16(1)
stdu 1,-96(1)
# handler stuff
ld 0,16(1)
mtlr 0
blr
# __kernel_sigtramp_rt64
addi r1,r1,__SIGNAL_FRAMESIZE
li r0,__NR_rt_sigreturn
sc
# kernel executes rt_sigreturn
rfid
# back to user address xyz

Note the blr with no matching bl. This can corrupt the return
predictor.

Solve this by instead resuming execution at the signal trampoline
which then calls the signal handler. qtrace-tools link_stack checker
confirms the entire user/kernel/vdso cycle is balanced after this
patch, whereas it's not upstream.

Alan confirms the dwarf unwind info still looks good. gdb still
recognises the signal frame and can step into parent frames if it
break inside a signal handler.

Performance is pretty noisy, not a very significant change on a POWER9
here, but branch misses are consistently a lot lower on a
microbenchmark:

 Performance counter stats for './signal':

looking at the log of the previous boot where the freeze occurred.

Next time the freeze happens, please reboot and then in a Terminal

Thanks. We released an update to gnome-shell-extension-desktop-icons

and then reboot.

If the freeze still happens after that then when it does, please reboot

[Bug 1909241] Re: Unreadable text with two monitors

2021-01-21 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks. The connected TV appears to be 115 cm x 65 cm, which is about 52
inches diagonally. At FHD that makes it about 42 pixels per inch. So the
real DPI of the TV is more like 42, not 96, meaning text appearing small
by default is probably expected and not a bug.

You will need to tweak your system settings to change the default sizes
of everything, but I don't see a bug here at the moment.
