[Bug 1905522] Re: Error in fresh install of Ubuntu 20.10 package grub-efi-amd64-signed 1.155.1+2.04-1ubuntu35.1 failed
I'm seeing something similar on an ASUS desktop PC (AMD socket FM2, DDR3) which already has a few dual-boot options installed. I'm trying to install groovy 20.10 using Ubiquity from the live CD/DVD/USB. The installer goes through most of its paces, until it tries to install GRUB. It then dies with a pop-up box: Error installing grub-efi-amd64-signed installed grub-efi-amd64-signed package post-installation script subprocess returned error exit status 1 Attempting to install the package manually from a live desktop terminal window also fails, with: $ sudo su - # chroot /target # apt install grub-efi-amd64 giving: Setting up grub-efi-amd64 (2.04-1ubuntu35.1) ... Installing grub to /boot/efi. Installing for x86_64-efi platform. grub-install: warning: Cannot read EFI Boot* variables. grub-install: warning: read_file: could not read from file: Input/output error. grub-install: warning: vars_get_variable: read_file(/sys/firmware/efi/vars/Boot000C-8be4df61-93ca-11d2-aa0d-00e098032b8c/raw_var) failed : Input/output error. grub-install: warning: efi_get_variable: ops->get_variable failed: Input/output error. grub-install: error: failed to register the EFI boot entry: Input/output error. The workaround seems to be, while the installer is stopped at the error message box but still open, launching a terminal window from the live desktop and mounting efivarfs manually. At that point, apt may be used to install the package, install grub, apt upgrade everything to the current release... whatever. sudo su - chroot /mount/target sh -c "mount -t efivarfs efivarfs /sys/firmware/efi/efivars; grub-install; update-grub; apt install --reinstall grub-efi-amd64-signed After that, I was able to reboot into Ubuntu 20.10 (groovy) from the internal SSD. Without that, I could try the installer any number of times and it would always fail the same way. bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=933523 looks to be related bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub2-signed/+bug/1874315 might be as well? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1905522 Title: Error in fresh install of Ubuntu 20.10 package grub-efi-amd64-signed 1.155.1+2.04-1ubuntu35.1 failed To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub2-signed/+bug/1905522/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1908473] Re: rsyslog-relp: imrelp module leaves sockets in CLOSE_WAIT state which leads to file descriptor leak
Hi Mauricio, It seems riscv64 passes on Groovy due to tests being skipped on the riscv64 architecture. >From Groovy's build log: https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/NCJPDVSbSW/ If you look at the man page for dh_auto_test it mentions: If the DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS environment variable contains nocheck, no tests will be performed. nocheck was added to riscv64 by default for all packages in Groovy as a part of this change to dpkg in bug 1891686. The test cases basic-realistic.sh and tls-basic-realistic.sh fail on Focal because they attempt to send 100,000 packets between the server and the client, and we get to various stages, like 00029000 msgs sent, and now 00047000 msgs sent with some changes William made to the builders, before it times out and assumes the channel is dead, and the test fails. https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/hwYXSbKPPV/ We aren't going to hit the 100,000 packets on riscv anytime soon. I think I will open a new bug to adjust the packet counts from 100,000 down to 10,000 for basic-realistic.sh and tls-basic-realistic.sh, which resembles what has been done for receiver-abort.sh and tls-receiver- abort.sh. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1908473 Title: rsyslog-relp: imrelp module leaves sockets in CLOSE_WAIT state which leads to file descriptor leak To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/librelp/+bug/1908473/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1912614] Re: kASLR incorrectly described as disabled by default in Security/Features
Thanks for the corrections, lo-na-aleim. We've updated the wiki page to reflect the KASLR features as they stand currently. This wiki page is programmatically constructed: hand edits wouldn't survive in the long run. Note that the /proc/sys/kernel/randomize_va_space controls whether or not the brk address space within userspace processes should be randomized. Quoting from the Linux kernel source file init/Kconfig: Randomizing heap placement makes heap exploits harder, but it also breaks ancient binaries (including anything libc5 based). This option changes the bootup default to heap randomization disabled, and can be overridden at runtime by setting /proc/sys/kernel/randomize_va_space to 2. I don't know off-hand a reliable programmatic tool available to determine that the kernel has booted into a randomized base location, or whether it randomizes memory slabs, etc. The /boot/config* files by convention show the configuration of the kernel, but local administrators may not observe this convention if they replace the kernel. [Bug 1912670] Re: Mouse buttons and keyboard unresponsive after idle time
Thanks for the bug report. This sounds a power management problem. 1. If you have 'tlp' installed the please uninstall it. It's known to cause bugs like this. 2. Try installing 'powertop' and then look in its 'Tunables' section. By changing some of those to 'Bad' (which is actually better than 'Good' in this case) you can stop them suspending so much. 3. The kernel team should have some more ideas. When the signal handler function returns, it runs the trampoline. It looks like this: # interrupt at user address xyz # kernel stuff... signal is raised rfid # void handler(int sig) addis 2,12,.TOC.-.LCF0@ha addi 2,2,.TOC.-.LCF0@l mflr 0 std 0,16(1) stdu 1,-96(1) # handler stuff ld 0,16(1) mtlr 0 blr # __kernel_sigtramp_rt64 addi r1,r1,__SIGNAL_FRAMESIZE li r0,__NR_rt_sigreturn sc # kernel executes rt_sigreturn rfid # back to user address xyz Note the blr with no matching bl. This can corrupt the return predictor. Solve this by instead resuming execution at the signal trampoline which then calls the signal handler. qtrace-tools link_stack checker confirms the entire user/kernel/vdso cycle is balanced after this patch, whereas it's not upstream. Alan confirms the dwarf unwind info still looks good. gdb still recognises the signal frame and can step into parent frames if it break inside a signal handler. Performance is pretty noisy, not a very significant change on a POWER9 here, but branch misses are consistently a lot lower on a microbenchmark: Performance counter stats for './signal': 13,085.72 msec task-clock # 1.000 CPUs utilized 45,024,760,101 cycles # 3.441 GHz 65,102,895,542 instructions # 1.45 insn per cycle 11,271,673,787 branches # 861.372 M/sec 59,468,979 branch-misses # 0.53% of all branches 12,989.09 msec task-clock # 1.000 CPUs utilized 44,692,719,559 cycles # 3.441 GHz 65,109,984,964 instructions # 1.46 insn per cycle 11,282,136,057 branches # 868.585 M/sec 39,786,942 branch-misses # 0.35% of all branches Signed-off-by: Nicholas Piggin Signed-off-by: Michael Ellerman Link: https://lore.kernel.org/r/20200511101952.1463138-1-npig...@gmail.com --- -- FAIL: misc/tst-sigcontext-get_pc original exit status 1 info: address in signal handler: 0x737faa11db44 info: call stack entry 0: 0x737faa311f58 info: call stack entry 1: 0x737faa3404c4 info: call stack entry 2: 0x0 info: call stack entry 3: 0x737faa312144 info: call stack entry 4: 0x737faa312870 info: call stack entry 5: 0x737faa313264 info: call stack entry 6: 0x737faa311c40 info: call stack entry 7: 0x737faa0f9e5c info: call stack entry 8: 0x737faa0fa040 error: ../sysdeps/unix/sysv/linux/tst-sigcontext-get_pc.c:60: not true: found error: 1 test failures Reply at: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/glibc/+bug/1907298/comments/4 On 2021-01-21T20:59:52+00:00 Andreas Schwab wrote: Please report that to linuxppc-...@lists.ozlabs.org. [Bug 1912472] Re: Display freezes randomly - high CPU usage
We can often tell exactly what caused a freeze after rebooting and looking at the log of the previous boot where the freeze occurred. Next time the freeze happens, please reboot and then in a Terminal window run: journalctl -b-1 > prevboot.txt and attach the resulting text file here. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1912472 Title: Display freezes randomly - high CPU usage To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mutter/+bug/1912472/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1912246] Re: gnome-shell freezes randomly after upgrading to groovy
Thanks. We released an update to gnome-shell-extension-desktop-icons this week with some fixes that might help. Please update your system: sudo apt update sudo apt full-upgrade and then reboot. If the freeze still happens after that then when it does, please reboot and run: journalctl -b-1 > prevboot.txt lspci -kv > lspci.txt and attach the resulting text files here. ** Package changed: gnome-shell (Ubuntu) => gnome-shell-extension-desktop-icons (Ubuntu) ** Changed in: gnome-shell-extension-desktop-icons (Ubuntu) Status: New => Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1912246 Title: gnome-shell freezes randomly after upgrading to groovy To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell-extension-desktop-icons/+bug/1912246/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1909241] Re: Unreadable text with two monitors
Thanks. The connected TV appears to be 115 cm x 65 cm, which is about 52 inches diagonally. At FHD that makes it about 42 pixels per inch. So the real DPI of the TV is more like 42, not 96, meaning text appearing small by default is probably expected and not a bug. You will need to tweak your system settings to change the default sizes of everything, but I don't see a bug here at the moment. ** Changed in: xorg-server (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => Invalid ** Changed in: nvidia-graphics-drivers-450 (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => Invalid -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1909241 Title: Unreadable text with two monitors To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers-450/+bug/1909241/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
