When I select the task bar menu, click on the Wifi and select "Select to
network", a modal window appears that allows me to select a Wifi

with 3.4.1+dfsg-1ubuntu4.1 from proposed and other than I had to use a
slightly different (legacy) syntax in the tools I had the same results.

Ok I found in the stdc++ implementation of "new" that sz indeed is passed to
malloc.

I can confirm that west-chamber=20100405+svn2007.r124-8ubuntu0.1 can
be installed and compiled with the latest 4.15 and 5.4 kernels in
bionic:
$ dkms status
west-chamber, 20100405+svn2007.r124, 4.15.0-137-generic, x86_64: installed
west-chamber, 20100405+svn2007.r124,
Both of the scaffolding patches
(aa350dbe3a1ee5e062228f8f5ebd2ffb6e58709c
b41352a93c163afafd29f56bb18fd3c0fef1120c) are present in linux stable
v5.4.91 which have been applied to focal/master-next.

and this succeeded. If I attach the '--log=' option to this command

I need to verify a few things, but I believe it is to do with
chiphersuites, seclevel callback, and protocol versions.
When setting chiphersuite string ; or changing security level; or
changing the security level callback; or setting min/mas protocol
versions. All of those things are not checked
The RANDOMIZE_BASE is limited to PPC32 in all kernels (including
upstream), so this might be the answer why you do not see it on ppc64el.
