[Bug 1919955] [NEW] weird graphics artifacts in Firefox on Xorg after upgrade
Public bug reported: Hi, just updated today and after restart I logged in under Xorg and when opening Firefox you get blue and black pixelated static across the screen. this only happens running Xorg, not under Wayland. A bit hard to explain the issue, so added a screenshot Also this could be an Xorg issue It only seems to affect Firefox. Thus instead we use self-signed certificates for the kernel which have > not been signed by a CA. > > Thus we should simply include them all in trusted keyring, and there is no > need to ship anything on disk or load anything from the userspace. My mistake. Yes, if you build the kernel signing key into the trusted keyring, that should cover everything. Kind regards, Daniel --- Comment From daniel.axte...@ibm.com 2021-03-18 00:29 EDT--- Wait, no, hang on, this keeps tripping me up. IMA kexec appended-signature verification uses only the %.ima and %.platform keyrings. Having the key in %.builtin_trusted_keys should logically be enough, but that's not how the code works, much to my regular frustration. Here's groovy/master security/integrity/ima/ima_appraise.c modsig_verify(): rc = integrity_modsig_verify(INTEGRITY_KEYRING_IMA, modsig); if (IS_ENABLED(CONFIG_INTEGRITY_PLATFORM_KEYRING) && rc && func == KEXEC_KERNEL_CHECK) rc = integrity_modsig_verify(INTEGRITY_KEYRING_PLATFORM, modsig); if (rc) { *cause = "invalid-signature"; *status = INTEGRITY_FAIL; } else { *status = INTEGRITY_PASS; } So just having it in %:.builtin_trusted_keys doesn't suffice, we need to get it into %:.ima or %:.platform somehow. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1903288 Title: Power guest secure boot with static keys: kernel portion To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-power-systems/+bug/1903288/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1919930] Re: power off stress test will hang on the TGL machines
** Description changed: - This bug is for tracking purpose. + Intel suggested that we do 2 actions to fix this problem, the 1st is + merging 5 kernel patches, this only applies to H and OEM-5.10 since + there is no tgl.c in the groovy kernel yet. the 2nd is change a kernel + config, this change applies to H, G and OEM-5.10. + + https://github.com/thesofproject/linux/issues/2781 + + [Impact] + When we run poweroff/on stress test on some lenovo TGL laptop, the + system will randomly hang, and when this issue happens, the dmesg + shows the sof audio driver fails. + + [Fix] + Intel recommend that we backport 5 kernel patches and change a + kernel config. + + [Test] + After applying the changes, and test on TGL/cml/whl machines, + the audio function works as good as before, and the poweroff stress + test didn't hang anymore. + + + [Where problems could occur] + The kernel patches probably could introduce issues when system + powre off or reboot on TGL machines, but this possibility is low + since we have tested these patches on different TGL machines. + + the kernel option change could introduce power consumption + regression, but it only affects power saving and package_cstate values + when any capture stream is active, while no impact if all capture + streams are inactive. that is to say, in theory it will not impact + the power consumption in short idle or long idle. We do have to take great care to minimise risk of regression to existing users of course, as you've very well demonstrated in this bug :) Our process for getting fixes in is documented at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates. [Bug 1919563] Re: updated sssd with smart cards now brick systems without full cert chain
So, if I didn't get it wrong, if we'd just use /etc/ssl/certs/ca- certificates.crt as the SSSD pam certificate in such case would work? I mean having this in /etc/sssd/sssd.conf [pam] pam_cert_db_path = /etc/ssl/certs/ca-certificates.crt And then what was into /etc/sssd/pki/sssd_auth_ca_db.pem to be added to .crt's under /usr/local/share/ca-certificates/sssd_auth_ca_db/ and eventually calling update-ca-certificates maybe? We could even do the other way around probably, by adding an hook to /etc/ca-certificates/update.d/ so that we ensure that /etc/ssl/certs/ca- certificates.crt is always in sync with the system ring? As Robie said, we could revert this change but this would not be ideal for various reasons IMHO: 1. As you said this is going to be used more and more, and so we'll have to end up to keep supporting a growing number of systems with an outdated method that is going to be dropped in future (i.e. better to do it now that its usage is limited than having to do it in future when the audience is bigger) 2. We would like to have a single documented method to have smartcard auth in ubuntu using SSSD that can be validated from 20.04 onward and that keep working in future LTSs (and for sure next LTS will have to drop NSS anyways, so it's just about delaying a problem making it bigger). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1919563 Title: updated sssd with smart cards now brick systems without full cert chain To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/sssd/+bug/1919563/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

In my POC patch, it is because we need to divert flash-kernel before it is installed, *just in case* it gets installed as a dependency of some other package (in our case it happened due to a kernel Recommends relationship). We therefore can't use `which` to look up the path... unless we continue to always install f-k in the ephemeral for the sole purpose of looking up its path... but that seems to making assumptions as well - i.e. that the ephemeral OS has the same paths as the target OS. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1918427 Title: curtin: install flash-kernel in arm64 UEFI unexpected To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/cloud-images/+bug/1918427/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
Re: [Bug 1918427] Re: curtin: install flash-kernel in arm64 UEFI unexpected
On Tue, Mar 16, 2021 at 10:05 AM Ryan Harper <1918...@bugs.launchpad.net> wrote: > > Hi Dan, > > Could you summarize the problem with flash-kernel and this system? Sure. flash-kernel recognizes Mustang boards and will generate uImage and uInitrd files for it, which are required for booting with u-boot firmware. However, these boards can also run in UEFI mode, which Date's board does. In UEFI mode, flash-kernel still knows it is on a Mustang and generates uImage/uInitrd files - which won't be used for anything in that case, they are just wasting space, but does not cause it to fail. This does cause problems in a curtin install though. Curtin has logic to divert away tools that get executed during initramfs hooks, to avoid failures in packaging scripts before an initramfs is generated. flash-kernel in particular will fail if an initramfs is not found on this system. Curtin tries to be smart here and only divert flash-kernel 1) if it is installed and 2) on systems that are*not* in UEFI mode, and both of these scenarios have escapes: 1) flash-kernel could get installed post-divert. In that case, flash-kernel's own postinst will cause it to run and then fail. This happens today if you start with a cloud image w/o flash-kernel pre-baked because Ubuntu's kernel recommends flash-kernel, causing it to be installed along with the kernel. Official cloud images happen to have flash-kernel pre-baked which avoids this issue. I think curtin should work whether or not the kernel recommends flash-kernel and whether or not curtin is pre-baked (in fact, I'd like for us to stop pre-baking it - the vast majoriy of ARM servers do not need it). 2) If flash-kernel is installed, and curtin finds we're in UEFI mode, it chooses not to divert flash-kernel. flash-kernel will therefore run and fail on UEFI Mustangs. The way I've personally framed this issue is that Ubuntu should not be trying to install flash-kernel on ARM systems that don't require it, which is the reason I've added the various tasks here. - cloud images shouldn't prebake it - the kernel should allow non-flash-kernel bootloaders to satisfy its recommends - curtin shouldn't install flash-kernel on efi-based arm64 servers. It does this today, but - in what seems like a bug, only in the ephemeral and not the target. A separate issue is that flash-kernel should know to just exit if it's running on an EFI system and not bother creating the unused uImage/uInitrd - Date recently got a patched merged into Debian's f-k to do that. That would seemingly also avoid the curtin issues here, but only if we continue to install flash-kernel all the time. -dann -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1918427 Title: curtin: install flash-kernel in arm64 UEFI unexpected To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/cloud-images/+bug/1918427/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1919563] Re: updated sssd with smart cards now brick systems without full cert chain
To speak to real world assessment here - there's a big push across many (US) gov't orgs and industry to deploy MFA. These requirements are not new, but many have not been enforced due to lack of compliance checks/certifications. This is changing with new efforts in the US Gov't industry circles with regard to CMMC. This is an assessment/certification that industry must meet and maintain for contactual compliance, starting to roll out in the next year or so. Likewise there's been a lot of focus lately on unclassified compliance with NIST policy. We have a number of customers, working toward or maintaining an MFA solution. All are struggling. Many have lagged with pam_pkcs11 providing/satisfying most compliance requirements. But with RHEL8 and Ubuntu 20.04 adoption underway (with RHEL6 and 14.04 end of life) many are stuck working to cobble together an implementation. Of course with the uptick in remote work, MFA has also resurged, also pushing along adoption of sssd MFA. We noticed with the latest round of patching something was a-miss. and today tracked it down to this change. We're working with our customers to come up with a workaround. I think there's a larger number of folks impacted here, but unfortunately, the number of possible ways to do MFA is very large, and because no one maintainer has completely documented/supported MFA well, sysadmins typically develop their MFA craft using what they can. I don't discourage this change, in fact, will help push along the MFA adoption. However, I think perhaps some preflight checks in the package could solve someone bricking their machine. (or a large quantity of machines). I'd also suggest that MFA support in general should be considered a core requirement for future versions of the LTS, and well tested, supported and documented. Adoption will only grow with time, and become more critical. This will help reduce the variations of implementations, and help drive folks to a known and supported configuration. Reproduction of the issue: In our circles, we see a fully Microsoft AD integrated Smartcard (with kerberos and PKINIT) implementation. This also bleeds over into pam_sss configuration issues with U20.04, (for which I should file another ticket) Based on my diagnosis today, I think this is isolated to p11_child, and those with a nssdb with only issuing CA certs populated in the database. I don't think this issue matters for which directory is being used and if PKINIT is functioning, since all the MFA magic happens within p11_child. I'm going to assume that you folks have some way test AD with MFA, and will try to summarize. To reproduce, you'll need (at least) a 2 tier CA PKI chain. Root -> Issuing CA -> End user cert (with old sssd version) configure for smart card auth * do as you always do to join/setup sssd to a directory service * verify user ID lookups, and login works as expected with password * add any mapping/filter rules to the /etc/sssd/sssd.conf for p11_child * upadte /usr/share/pam-configs/sss to Priority 800, rebuild pam stack, dpkg-divert /usr/share/pam-configs/sss * add the root and issuing certs to /usr/local/share/ca-certificates, rebuild system trust store * generate a new, empty nssdb /usr/bin/certutil -N -d sql:/etc/pki/nssdb --empty-password * when adding the certs to nssdb, only add the Issuing CA WITH CT,C,C flags certutil -A -d /etc/pki/nssdb -n issuingCA.crt -t "CT,C,C" -i /usr/local/share/ca-certificates/issuingCA.pem * enable openSC modutil -force -dbdir /etc/pki/nssdb -add "OpenSC" -libfile opensc-pkcs11.so * test PKI auth works * login or: /usr/libexec/sssd/p11_child --nssdb=/etc/pki/nssdb --pre -d 10 --debug-fd=1 --verify no_ocsp * perform upgrade to latest sssd * verify the /etc/sssd/pki/sssd_auth_ca_db.pem is populated only with the issuingCA * test p11_child to see if it breaks /usr/libexec/sssd/p11_child --debug-microseconds=0 --debug-timestamps=1 --debug-fd=23 --debug-level=0xf7f0 --pre --verify no_ocsp --nssdb /etc/sssd/pki/sssd_auth_ca_db.pem fix it: * add the /usr/local/share/ca-certificates/rootCA.pem >> /etc/sssd/pki/sssd_auth_ca_db.pem * run p11_child again, observe that it works * try to login Brick your system procedure: After above test procedure works: * configure for MFA on old sssd * populate the below to /usr/share/pam-configs/sss-smartcardonly * pam-auth-update --package --enable sss-smartcardonly --remove sss --force * verify only smart card is allowed to login * apt upgrade * reboot, login no longer allowed Note that SSHing into the system may be allowed, depending on ssh configuration and if sss_ssh_authroizedkeys is enabled. I don't know of a great way to test this without pulling apart p11_child, or using it as part of a pre-flight check somehow during the package update. On most systems with a small number of possible cpus and a small number of squashfs mounts it no doubt works fine, but the introduction of snaps caused a big increase in the number of squashfs mounts in Ubuntu systems, which makes CONFIG_SQUASHFS_DECOMP_MULTI_PERCPU problematic if it still has the same behavior. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1636847 Title: unexpectedly large memory usage of mounted snaps To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/snappy/+bug/1636847/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1802533] Re: [MIR] pipewire
Hi, I am a maintainer of a low latency audio application, Mixxx. I misunderstood the prior discussion on this issue and thought that Ubuntu 21.04 would be shipping with PipeWire by default for audio. However I tested 21.04 beta in a VM and pipewire and pulseaudio are both running by default. It seems that PulseAudio is still used by default and PipeWire is only used for video on Ubuntu currently. Is that correct? It seems there is no easy way for Ubuntu users to replace PulseAudio or JACK with PipeWire. I found this page on the Debian wiki: https://wiki.debian.org/PipeWire#Using_as_a_substitute_for_PulseAudio.2FJACK.2FALSA but I'm unclear if it's easy for Ubuntu users to prevent the PulseAudio daemon from running so PipeWire can take its place. Are you planning to use PipeWire for audio by default by the 22.04 LTS release? I really hope by that by that time we can ship a Flatpak and have it just work by default on every common distro. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1802533 Title: [MIR] pipewire To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pipewire/+bug/1802533/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1919847] [NEW] rshim logging buffer could overflow and get lost
Public bug reported: On Bluefield platforms, the 'bfrshlog' script can be used to write a string into the internal rshim logging buffer which has size 1KB. When the buffer is full, the intention is to drop the new data. However, due to a bug, the buffer could be overwritten and wrap-around when full. SRU Justification: [Impact] * When 'cat /dev/rshim/misc' with DISPLAY_LEVEL set to 2, the logging buffer could be potentially displayed as empty when it's full. [Fix] * Add the check properly to make sure the buffer won't wrap-around. [Test Case] * Run "bfrshlog " repeatedly and check the /dev/rshim/misc with DISPLAY_LEVEL set to 2 in this file. The buffer shouldn't be overwritten or wrap-around. [Regression Potential] * Yes, it should be easy to add regression. [Bug 1918427] Re: curtin: install flash-kernel in arm64 UEFI unexpected
I still don't understand: 1) why does which not find flash-kernel if it's present in the ephemeral image (meaning it will also be present in the target filesystem 2) What is the problem with flash-kernel such that you need to dpkg-divert it? Generally, we do not want to include paths to binaries; we install Ubuntu and Centos, and possibly other distros which may not have the same path to this tools so I would like to understand what's not working to understand why we're hardcoding paths to binaries for dpkg-divert. [Bug 1919562] [NEW] /etc/mime.types is ignored
Public bug reported: Today I noticed that pdf attachments aren't declared as application/pdf anymore but application/octet-stream. I found that /etc/mime.types seems to be ignored and it only works again if I add "application/pdf pdf" to my $HOME/.mime.types. However the fine mutt manual says: When you add an attachment to your mail message, Mutt searches your personal mime.types file at $HOME/.mime.types, and then the system mime.types file at /usr/local/share/mutt/mime.types or /etc/mime.types Actually strace shows only this: openat(AT_FDCWD, "/home/andy/.mime.types", O_RDONLY) = 3 openat(AT_FDCWD, "/usr/local/etc/mime.types", O_RDONLY) = 3 openat(AT_FDCWD, "/usr/local/share/mutt/mime.types", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) Any idea what might have happened recently? [Bug 1905790] Re: Make SSSD in 20.04 using OpenSSL and p11-kit (instead of NSS) for p11_child
This change had created a denial of service configuration bug for an untold number of smart card configured (and smart card requires) systems. p11_child requires with the OpenSSL PEM full cert chain to function. the NSSDB version does not. So for folks that have configured the minimum in the NSSDB by only adding the issuing certificate (and not chain of certs to the root), smart card authentication will now fail by simply updating to the latest Ubuntu 20.04 packages. The nssdb to pam conversion script does not check chain of trust in the new pam file. So when untold number of systems roll this out with require_cert_auth in the pam stack to be NIST 800-171 compliant, they will all be bricked and no way to login. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1905790 Title: Make SSSD in 20.04 using OpenSSL and p11-kit (instead of NSS) for p11_child To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/sssd/+bug/1905790/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1905493] Re: cloud-init status --wait hangs indefinitely in a nested lxd container
I wonder if this is actually a problem with the specific apparmor profile that's created by lxd, maybe it doesn't provide enough permissions to allow the container's lxd to correctly pass the apparmor profile down to the nested container. Similar to how lxd locks down containers a bit too tight by default and requires enabling 'security.nesting' just to be able to create a nested container. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1905493 Title: cloud-init status --wait hangs indefinitely in a nested lxd container To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/apparmor/+bug/1905493/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
