Hello,
Since at least last year, Firefox from the Ubuntu package fails French accents
that require a combination of keys like ê and ï.
However dead keys work on other programs like Thunderbird or Firefox binary
from Mozilla.
I guess this issue happened after an update of
Using apt-file search to look for the missing icons, they seem to be in
various *-icon-theme packages.
The breeze-icon-theme package, described as "the default icon theme for
the KDE Plasma 5 desktop.", seems to have all the missing icons.
So the fix was

I have been having trouble with boot failures and tried 'acpi=off'
during installation of 20.04.2 from USB; ticked 'Install 3rd part
software for graphics ..' this time. Boot from USB and initial install
usually works ok; boot error arises later, maybe after software
