[Bug 1926032] Re: [i915] Screen "disconnects" when updating screen buffer

2021-05-03 Thread Daniel van Vugt
There certainly are invisible differences between Linux and Windows
kernels internally how they implement HDMI signalling. So it is possible
Linux is more fragile than Windows in this respect. As such, avoiding
the receiver or changing cables might be a workaround.

A proper fix in that case would go in the kernel so reassigning there...

[Bug 1925732] Re: new in 21.04: gnome window manager ignores the --geometry location request of the gnome-terminal

2021-05-03 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I think it's more of a security feature than a bug, so no I don't think
it's appropriate to open a bug against the protocol itself. And Ubuntu
was not involved in the design of Wayland, so complaining about it here
won't achieve much.

As a workaround you can:

* Use Xorg sessions instead; or

* Find a gnome-shell extension that will remember window positions for
you; or

* Just place windows manually.

[Bug 1926032] Re: [i915] Screen "disconnects" when updating screen buffer

2021-05-03 Thread Johannes Konow
Most certainly not a problem with hdmi connection. I have had windows
installed on the same machine without issues. The behavior is such that
it is very clear that as soon as you move the mouse after a period of
idle, the problem occurs. Also if the computer receives a notification
after a period of idle it occurs.

There is a definite link to activity which renders new information on
the screen buffer. It can play a movie without a problem on vlc but when
I pause, it disconnects the screen (presumably because the "pause" bars
appear on the screen). If I right click to add subtitles or change
something else in the video it also appears at the exact same time I
click. This problem is very repeatable. I can do a phone quality video
if that would be of interest.

If it was a problem with hdmi it would be more random in behavior and it
would be a problem on windows as well.

[Bug 1926205] Re: graphic interface faulty

2021-05-03 Thread arturpio
Thank you Daniel,

1. Yes, the same as the bug 1874578, but even worst because after a some
time, there is a loss of windowing and work-spaces, and mouse clicks.
Yes, "When I boot my system I have to wait at least 20 - 30 seconds for
the application icons to load on dock." With SSD disk!

2. I had no Extensions. This happened on a fresh basic "normal" install,
Work-spaces reduced to 0.

3. I did not check with "Top" command, but I check with System Monitor,
process tab, and there was no any process persistently and excessively
eating CPU resources.

In fact, now I erased the 21.04 now and reverted to 20.04.2 LTS which
run smoothly and absolutely with no any smallest problem. Really -
nothing, but on the same computer. The dock loads instantaneously, there
is no loss of windows and and workspace control. Now, my extensions and
apps are all installed too, and are all running fine.

In the present form, 20.04 is useless for me. I can not use it. This is
the first time in my life (With Ubuntu :) it happens - being unable to
use the short-term release.

Maybe this is because the hardware platform (AMD). Something is really
faulty.

[Bug 1925732] Re: new in 21.04: gnome window manager ignores the --geometry location request of the gnome-terminal

2021-05-03 Thread Péter Prőhle
"... this is expected because windows only have control over their size,
and NEVER THEIR POSITION, in Wayland"

This is really a tragedy.

One significant benefit for me of the linux world over the micro and
soft world, that I can POSITION the windows of a project from my shell
script starting that project or during the project.

This is a design bug of Wayland, what needs to be fixed, regardless of
the outcome of the test with "Xorg" (I will do after the funeral today).

If there was no other protocol, if the Wayland was the only protocol,
even in that case this is a very serious design bug.

Hence I suggest to add "Wayland" to the "affects" list.

Do I have to leave the Wayland world, and switch back to Xorg?

But it was told, that Wayland is more advanced, that is the new
direction.

Is the new direction in 2021 that I can not control the location of a
new windows from script?

Then why it STILL is allowed, that we can control the location of a new
window using a mouse?

Is it possibble --- as a further enhancement --- to disable also the
window positioning by the mouse?

I do not find how to add "Wayland" to the "affects" list, help please.
Thanks.

[Bug 1927037] [NEW] ath9k driver: miniPCIe Atheros AR93xx not recognized

2021-05-03 Thread Ash Wilson
Public bug reported:

Expected behavior:
Network adapter should be visible via `iw list`, `iwconfig`, and `ifconfig`.

Actual behavior:
Network adapter is visible in `lspci` and `lshw`, but not in `iw list`,
`iwconfig`, or `ifconfig`

Details:
The Atheros network card is detected by the ath9k driver when installed into a
machine with x86_64 architecture. When the same card is installed into a
miniPCIe-to-PCIe adapter, then plugged into a Raspberry Pi CM4 IO breakout
board, the network adapter can be seen via lspci and lshw but is not seen by
iw, iwconfig, or ifconfig.

[Bug 1914106] Re: Xorg freeze

2021-05-03 Thread Jason Mehmel
Okay! I removed the extensions using the above commands, and booted back
into the X11 'normal' Ubuntu option. No freezes after checking some of
the main actions that precipitated a freeze before. (Opening a window,
trying to choose 'suspend' from the power options)

I've re-installed some of the key gnome extensions I wanted, and still
seeing no freeze currently in X11! I'll update here if there are any
changes.

[Bug 1926070] Re: Please backport Desktop Icons NG to 20.04

2021-05-03 Thread Daniel van Vugt
It appears the main problem here is an upstream one: The extension does
not support GNOME 3.36 used in Ubuntu 20.04. The upstream code only
declares support for 3.38 and 40, while the GNOME page for the extension
offers downloads for 3.30, 3.32, 3.34, 3.38, 40.

Please report a bug to the developer requesting support for GNOME 3.36:

  https://gitlab.com/rastersoft/desktop-icons-ng/-/issues

and then tell us the new issue ID.

[Bug 1925732] Re: new in 21.04: gnome window manager ignores the --geometry location request of the gnome-terminal

2021-05-03 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Please try logging into 'Ubuntu on Xorg' and tell us if that fixes the
problem.

If the problem only happens in the default Ubuntu (which is Wayland)
session then this is expected because windows only have control over
their size, and never their position, in Wayland.

The release 17.10 this bug was about is no longer supported anyway.

[Bug 1926070] Re: Please backport Desktop Icons NG to 20.04

2021-05-03 Thread Daniel van Vugt
That's not a definite comment. More recently than that we found a few
bugs in the extension that I had to try and fix quickly, late in the
cycle. It's my opinion that this extension does not yet qualify as
stable so should not be considered for 20.04.x. It's not really even
finished in hirsute so let's try to get it right in impish first...

Indeed the source code suggests that error is from gnome-shell itself.
Next time the problem happens, please run:

[Bug 1927028] [NEW] [Boot in Recovery mode] Menu is broken

2021-05-03 Thread Jerry Lee
Public bug reported:

1. Boot to Ubuntu 20.04 on the GRUB menu
2. Select “Advanced options for Ubuntu”
3. Select “ ...(recovery mode)”
4. When the Recovery Menu is displayed, the background system messages broke
the menu.

My suggestion is to modify the grub.cfg by appending the following to
the kernel boot parameters only for the "recovery mode" item :

loglevel=0 systemd.show_status=0 systemd.log_level=0

[Bug 1807537] Re: failure in fsck option of advanced boot

2021-05-03 Thread Jerry Lee
In recovery mode, the root file system is still mounted.

My suggestions for this issue:

* Remove this `fsck` item in the recovery mode
* Modify the “friendly-recovery” package: /lib/recovery-mode/recovery-menu
Let fsck to skip the root file system by the option -R.

[Bug 1927017] Re: Slow Motion Bug in Horizon Zero Dawn Game

2021-05-03 Thread Erich Eickmeyer 
This is a problem that Linux cannot fix, but is a Windows compatibility
issue. Windows compatibility issues are done by Wine, but not within
Steam games as that is handled by Proton, which is a Wine-like
compatibility layer. You will find that not everything that runs on
Windows runs on Linux, even via Proton/Wine. As such, this is for the
Proton developers to figure out within that github thread. This issue
needs to remain in that conversation. There is nothing anybody working
on Ubuntu can do about it.

[Bug 1896578] Re: raid10: Block discard is very slow, causing severe delays for mkfs and fstrim operations

2021-05-03 Thread Matthew Ruffell
** Description changed:

  BugLink: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1896578

  [Impact]

Block discard is very slow on Raid10, which causes common use cases
which invoke block discard, such as mkfs and fstrim operations, to take
  a very long time.

For example, on a i3.8xlarge instance on AWS, which has 4x 1.9TB NVMe
devices which support block discard, a mkfs.xfs operation on Raid 10
takes between 8 to 11 minutes, where the same mkfs.xfs operation on Raid
  0, takes 4 seconds.

The bigger the devices, the longer it takes.

The cause is that Raid10 currently uses a 512k chunk size, and uses this
for the discard_max_bytes value. If we need to discard 1.9TB, the kernel
splits the request into millions of 512k bio requests, even if the
  underlying device supports larger requests.

For example, the NVMe devices on i3.8xlarge support 2.2TB of discard at
  once:

  $ cat /sys/block/nvme0n1/queue/discard_max_bytes
  2199023255040
  $ cat /sys/block/nvme0n1/queue/discard_max_hw_bytes
  2199023255040

Where the Raid10 md device only supports 512k:

  $ cat /sys/block/md0/queue/discard_max_bytes
  524288
  $ cat /sys/block/md0/queue/discard_max_hw_bytes
  524288

If we perform a mkfs.xfs operation on the /dev/md array, it takes over
11 minutes and if we examine the stack, it is stuck in
  blkdev_issue_discard()

  $ sudo cat /proc/1626/stack

There is also an additional commit which is required, and was merged
after "md/raid10: improve raid10 discard request" was merged. The
following commits enable Radid10 to use large discards, instead of
splitting into many bios, since the technical hurdles have now been
  removed.

  commit ca4a4e9a55beeb138bb06e3867f5e486da896d44

https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commit/ca4a4e9a55beeb138bb06e3867f5e486da896d44

The commits more or less cherry pick to the 5.11, 5.8, 5.4 and 4.15
kernels, with the following minor backports:

  1) submit_bio_noacct() needed to be renamed to generic_make_request()
