Problem solved!
Apparently the problem came from Windows OS: impossible to fully replace
Windows by Ubuntu.
So I decided to go for a dual boot. I reinstalled Windows 7 on the Vaio. Then I
installed Ubuntu as a second OS. I resized the disk so as to attribute a
minimum of space to Windows (60Gb)

I am facing this problem in Focal with the USB 3.0 Ethernet Gigabit
adapter "ASIX Electronics Corp. AX88179 Gigabit Ethernet" (waneth is the
name I assigned to this ethernet connected to the cable modem/router):

I was going through testing of desktop live cd images here as well and
noticed the same symptoms (which I think generally make sense for
Desktop images). But, I wanted to reflect this to subiquity project as
well as the use-case may not be captured as a user-story that is
considered "supported".
