[Bug 58358] Re: Installer (Live CD) Stuck at Uncompressing Linux ... Ok, booting the kernel
Another update. I tried installing the Edgy version, specifically this file: edgy-alternate-i386.iso31-Aug-2006 14:14 from http://cdimage.ubuntulinux.org/daily/current/ And I got this message: No Common CD-ROM Drive was detected. [Bug 6032] Re: sound doesn't work (via 8233/ac97)
I have had this problem with my Averatec 3715-EH1 Laptop. Using both Ubuntu 5.10 and only recently in 6.06 (LTS). I don't use hibernate or suspend (largely because if this bug) and seldom 'reboot.' It is usually just a shutdown/restart. My initial 5.10 install was dual-boot with windows, and a reboot into, and log out of Windows would fix it with an audible tick or pop. Installed 6.06(LTS) from the CD replacing the 5.10 install (due to a failed windows upgrade mucking up the MBR), and had it set up to dual- boot for a while too, but did not experience the problem so I wiped the Windows install and installed 6.06 (LTS) as the only OS and it worked well for near 2 weeks and recently the problem has resurfaced. I have checked the alsamixer settings and recently installed the latest kernel package for the k7 in an attempt to fix it. My next steps were going to be roll a custom kernel to see if perhaps there were some driver conflicts, OR reinstall via the same CD and do the upgrades/updates and see what might possibly be breaking it there. I think it is important to note that I had near a month of use without problem from the 6.06 (LTS) install. It only returned early this week (near 8/270/06). Also that again I don't use hbernate/suspend. Lastly I'm not convinced it might be the power management somehow. I really think it quits working while the machine is still 'on' sometimes. -- sound doesn't work (via 8233/ac97) https://launchpad.net/bugs/6032 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 58542] amrok being installed in pointless language
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: amarok I'm not sure whether to report this as an amarok bug or as a bug in the Ubuntu packaging system, but since Amarok was the only application to exhibit this behaviour I decided to report it here. I installed Amarok on a fresh Ubuntu Dapper system whose primary language was set to Thai. I was surprised to see Amarok in the package list writen in Russian (I think; cyrillic alphabet anyway) but thought nothing of it. After installation I saw that it was in fact installed in Russian, with bits of English here and there. I then realized that the Englis language support was apparently only partially installed (off the live-CD) and so I downloaded any missing packages off the Internet using the proper Ubuntu mechanisms. Now the Russian has diminished, but not disappeared completely (for instance, the bottom three configuration menu entries are now English, the topmost one is still in Russian). The configuration menu itself, as another example, is English most of the way, but the entry which probably means use custom fonts is still Russian. I assume this can be changed with a re-install of Amarok (I will keep the current state for a while in case it will be useful for debugging), but why on earth did something offer me Russian in the first place? I can only guess it comes before Thai, alphabetically. I have no connection with Russia or its language, so no other configuration choice of mine may have anything to do with it. This choice is of low importance, but completely ununderstandable and annoying to me, hence the bug report. Have fun, Luca ** Affects: amarok (Ubuntu) Importance: Untriaged Status: Unconfirmed -- amrok being installed in pointless language https://launchpad.net/bugs/58542 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 39830] Re: [Edgy] [Dapper] Built in Clock applet does not scale font
Just an additional note that this annoyance still exists on Edgy. Minimum pixel size of the panel is apparently 24 with the clock applet running using the 'digital' option. If you choose analog then there is no problem, panel will reduce to its minimum size (16 pixels) and scales well to its maximum. Digital display acts rather strangely. When moving from size 34 down to 32 there is no perceivable change in clock size , and panel does not adjust in size either. Going from 32 to 30 there is a quite a large jump in the visual size of the clock and the panel. The same type of pattern happens when going from 24 down to 22 (no change) then 22 down to 20 - big change18 then 16 offers no change in size whatever. -- [Edgy] [Dapper] Built in Clock applet does not scale font https://launchpad.net/bugs/39830 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 58545] mp3 plugin causes very bad sound distortion
Public bug reported: When playing some mp3's that have deep electronic beats I would often get very strong distortion from my speakers or headset. The distortion would persist even at low volume levels and even when the PCM output volume was low. I discovered a recommendation at: http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=1437919postcount=10 It involved removing the gstreamer0.10-fluendo-mp3 package and making sure that the gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly package is installed. [Bug 27951] Re: gst0.10 doesn't play DVD/message confusing for it
Comment from upstream: Can't reproduce this with up-to-date totem (1.5.92) and gst-plugins-ugly (0.10.4). With dvdreadsrc installed, opening a DVD iso file works just fine (totem will pass a dvd:///path/to/foo.iso URI), without dvdreadsrc installed it will throw an error telling you about the missing dvd handler. gst-typefind-0.10 doesn't recognise the ISO file, but that's actually not a problem, since totem does and prefixes the dvd:// bit, so only dvdreadsrc needs to be able to handle this right. If this is still a problem with current totem/gst-plugins-ugly, could you run totem like this: $ GST_DEBUG=totem:5,dvdreadsrc:5 totem dvd:///path/to/file.iso 2dbg.log ... wait for error ... press control+C $ gzip dbg.log and attach the dbg.log.gz file? ** Changed in: totem (Ubuntu) Assignee: Sebastien Bacher = Ubuntu Desktop Bugs Status: Unconfirmed = Needs Info -- gst0.10 doesn't play DVD/message confusing for it https://launchpad.net/bugs/27951 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 56114] Re: [edgy] Install race condition/memory leak
Ahh, some more info on this possible bug. I tried to replicate it on another machine with a lot more memory than the one I used when I submitted the bug report in the first place. I'm not at all sure what is going on behind the installer script for this package but it seems to require a large amount of RAM...in excess of 128MB. The first machine I tried to install on had only 48MB RAM + 128MB swap. What happened was that the anthy install filled up RAM and also filled up the swap which is what caused the 'problem' On the second try, with a machine 256MB RAM +256MB swap I could watch with 'top' the RAM filling up as anthy got installed, but I didn't get the hang/race/leak that I first thought was going on. If the apparently large RAM requirement to install anthy is a known quantity and quite ok then please close this bug report. Xubuntu maintainers, who install anthy as a dependency of xubuntu- desktop may be interested in the RAM requirements of this package however.
