[Bug 59314] Re: Knot2 Desktop CD Blank Screen / Hangs

2006-09-11 Thread corner
I believe I have the same problem, was a showstopper for me as well, I
have an Ati X700 PCIE in my laptop. But the screen did not go blank,
but first displayed lots of vertical lines, then lots of horizontal
lines before giving up and displaying a badly mangled X dialog that X
couldn't be started.

anyway, shouldn't safe mode still use vesa drivers instead of ati? The
open source drivers have never really worked for me, and I doubt they
will in the near future.

Can i force the install CD to use the vesa driver? then I'd like to try
it out again, as I'm desperate to use Monodevelop 0.11.

[Bug 56765] Re: suspend2ram doesn't resume

2006-09-11 Thread gpothier
Hi, Same symptoms here with a Dell Latitude D810, ATI X600, fglrx 8.28.8 from
repository, all the latest packages from edgy (sept 11, 2006), in particular
kernel is 2.6.17-7-generic.
Additionally, the kernel doesn't react to SysReq keys (tried SysReq-O,
SysReq-I).
It used to work in dapper but with the 2.6.16.20 kernel, home built.

2006-09-11 Thread Warren Butler
I can only get my 2.6.17-7 kernel to boot (same symptoms and 2.6.17-6
boots fine) by changing /dev/sda1 to /dev/hda1 in the kernel parameters.

I have 3 (older) machines that exhibit the same behaviour. A fourth

[Bug 59859] Mono crashes when closing last-exit

2006-09-11 Thread Frank Bynum
Public bug reported:

I'm not sure whether to report this under mono or last-exit, but here
goes. When you open Last Exit, the mono last.fm player, and hit the x
on the title bar to close it, it locks up, and GNOME asks if you want to
force quit. Then a minute later, you get a mono-jit crash.

Steps to reproduce:
0) Run Edgy
1) Open last-exit
2) Close last-exit right clicking x on title bar
3) Force quit when prompted by GNOME
4) Crash of mono-jit

If it is a bug, it is a bug of the corresponding package and not

[Bug 52649] Re: VIA IRQ quirk changes in 2.6.15-26.44 have broken various VIA devices

2006-09-11 Thread DavidWhyte
Hi,

It has been a while since there were any updates to this bug and also it
is yet to be triaged. Given Ben suggested staying with the 386 kernel I
am curious as to when a new version will be available without the sound
issues.

Are there any ideas?

Cheers,
Whytey

[Bug 58463] Re: No man pages for apport-unpack and apport-retrace

2006-09-11 Thread Martin Pitt
 apport (0.20) edgy; urgency=low
 .
   * apport: Renice ourself to priority 5 to not slow down the user's processes
 so heavily.
   * Add manpages for apport-retrace(1) and apport-unpack(1) and install them
 into apport. Closes: LP#58463
   * problem_report.py: Test attaching two files instead of one in the
test_write_file() regression check to assert correct key sorting.
   * problem_report.py: Alter write() method to sort binary data to the end of
the report. This makes reports easier to read, and also shows relevant
information more quickly when progressively loading them in a web browser.
 Adapt regression tests accordingly.
   * Move setting of ExecutablePath from apport's InformationCollector ctor to
apport_utils' report_add_proc_info(), where it belongs to. Check
 ExecutablePath in apport_utils' regression tests.
   * apport-unpack: Support '-' as report argument to read from stdin.
   * apport_utils.py, report_add_proc_info():
 - Apply some heuristics to determine whether the crashed process is an
interpreted script (check if the Name in /proc/pid/status matches
the second /proc/pid/cmdline part, and if that command line argument is
an existing executable file). In the case of an interpreted script, set
ExecutablePath to the script and InterpreterPath to the actually crashed
   ELF binary.
 - Test this with a shell (/bin/zgrep) and a Python (./apport-unpack)
   script in the test suite.
 - Closes: LP#58859
   * Add debian/apport.logrotate to add a daily 7-step /var/log/apport
 log rotation.
   * test-apport: Fix WCOREDUMP() and pidof checks in check_crash().
   * apport: Install a signal handler for all 'crashy' signals, which just logs
the signal and stack info and exits. This should avoid a crashing apport
examining itself, possibly in an endless loop. Closes: LP#58873

[Bug 59832] Re: gdm crashes closing a window

2006-09-11 Thread smurf
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: gdm

  Hi to all.
I have ubuntu dapper running on AMD athlon 64 2800, kernel is
2.6.15-26-amd64-k8.
Quite often my gdm crash when I press the x button in upper right corner of a
window. The desktop freeze but other tools (ie music player) continue to work.
I found in /var/log/gdm some log files named :o.log.x and one or two of these
gets huge size (I remove them frequently otherwise...):
  -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 928 2006-09-10 22:22 :0.log
  -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 28765374 2006-09-10 22:21 :0.log.1
  -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1159 2006-09-10 12:18 :0.log.4

the content of the biggest one (:0.log.1 in this case) is only the
  follow line, repeated n times:

Freeing resource id=40A017E6 which isn't there.

Resource id is not always the same, it changes each crash.

Also I find other logs always with the same time than gdm log, in
user.log appears some lines like in the attachment named user.log,
actually these lines appear also in a log called messages,

But I don't know if there is any relationship between the two events.

- I hope to find a solution for this because it make the system very

[Bug 58509] Re: /dev/null permission

2006-09-11 Thread danielpf
Just for those meeting this problem, here is my procedure to login.
A better one would be to find which script sets /dev/null to crw-- just
after boot!

After booting, when the login screen appears, I type Alt+Ctrl+F1 to get a
console.
Then I login as user and:

$ sudo chmod a+rw /dev/null

Since I have a non us keyboard I have to remember the position for + and
/ on a us keyboard.

Then I return to the X screen with Alt+Ctrl+F7 and can login.

[Bug 59867] Synaptics touchpad ceases functioning after suspend and resume.

2006-09-11 Thread Joseph Slaker
Public bug reported:

After suspending the notebook, resume works fine except that the
Synaptics touchpad no longer responds to any input.

Restarting the X server does not help.

Attempting to cat /dev/input/mice at the console and then moving the
touchpad does not show any input being received. The touchpad which had
been /dev/input/mouse0 is no longer listed after the resume.

This bug was present in Dapper and still exists in the current
(2006-09-11) build of Edgy as well.

[Bug 57568] Re: Cannot play the default radio stations

2006-09-11 Thread Daniel Holbach
Upstream comment:

Comment #6 from Jonathan Matthew (rhythmbox developer, points: 18)
2006-09-10 08:52 UTC [reply]

The streams on hbr1.com seem to give HTTP 404 responses for a while when the
stream changes. I just observed http://ubuntu.hbr1.com:19800/trance.ogg doing
this for about a minute at the end of a track. According to various mailing
list archives, the http://ogg.tv-radio.fr:1441/encoderfmusiques.ogg stream does
something similar.

Availability of these streams is completely out of our control, so I'm closing
this bug as NOTGNOME.

[Bug 59683] Re: synaptic fails to check whether /boot is mounted

2006-09-11 Thread Marijn Schouten
You cannot expect that everything works correctly if you do not mount
the full fs tree.

Agreed, so synaptic shouldn't tell me it applied all changes
successfully, but it does. The miniterminal shows that some things did
fail. This is definately a bug.

But to be honest I think it's your failure.

Fair enough. It's my choice to not mount /boot automatically and perhaps
that is just silly of me and I shouldn't expect synaptic to check for
this. I do expect it to tell me when something failed.

Please reopen.

[Bug 59870] Please sync sysv-rc-conf 0.99-5 from Debian Sid (main)

[Bug 59402] Re: Can't build against libxxf86vm-dev

2006-09-11 Thread Tollef Fog Heen
* Rocco Stanzione

| /usr/bin/ld: /usr/lib/libXxf86vm.a(XF86VMode.o): relocation
R_X86_64_32 against `a local symbol' can not be used when making a
shared object; recompile with -fPIC

Why are you trying to link this statically rather than linking against
the dynamic library?

| so I add -fPIC to CFLAGS in debian/rules and rebuild, reinstall, and the
| same command (which was: cc -Wall -fPIC `pkg-config gtk+-2.0 --cflags`
| -I/usr/include main.o /usr/lib/libXxf86vm.a -o gamma.so -L/usr/lib/
| `pkg-config gtk+-2.0 --libs` -shared) works.
|
| I don't know if this is a 'fix' or if it just makes it work with
| gkrellm-gamma.

It breaks static compilations, so please don't do that. If you have a
real need to link libXxf86vm statically into a shared object, the
right fix would be to provide a secondary .a file with the objects
compiled with -fPIC.

[Bug 51085] Re: scponlyc has SUID not set

2006-09-11 Thread Tillmann Falck
There is already an debconf question for file permissions that should be
set on scponlyc. The problem is that it is not shown on installation
(using defaults on (k)ubuntu). A dpkg-reconfigure scponly brings it up
and solves the problem.

Please consider raising the importance of the corresponding debconf
question (so that it is shown upon installation) as half of the package
is unuseable without it.

[Bug 49977] Re: After kernel upgrade to 2.6.15-25 X server cannot find nvidia module

2006-09-11 Thread Michael Vogt
nvidia-glx depends on the virtual nvidia-kernel-1.0.8762 provides.
This is provided by the various linux-restricted-modules. If no linux-
restricted-modules is installed, it will just pick the first it finds
(2.6.15-23).

If you had linux-386 installed all would work because linux-386
depends on the latest linux-image-386 and linux-restricted-modules-386.

Cheers,
 Michael

I'm on gstreamer and standard setup.

I'm thinking that I had CTRL+ALT+BACKed before watching the movie, got
