[Bug 60760] Re: turning off autohinting has no effect

2006-09-30 Thread Ming Hua
I discussed this with a user, and he says this is more likely due to the
new libxft2 (2.1.10) ignoring the autohint setting by fontconfig.

If that's the case, using the ftstring tool in freetype2-demos should
show same results on two systems, as (I assume) ftstring talks with
libfreetype6 directly without going through libxft2.

I don't have an edgy system though so I can't test.

[Bug 63108] LegacyHuman Theme has not been Cairo-ified

2006-09-30 Thread z_diver
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntu-artwork

The LegacyHuman theme is not as clean as it was in Dapper or Breezy
anymore. Now it has a light colored line between the titlebar and the
gtk+ theme on all unselected windows.

I'm pretty sure the reason is the original LegacyHuman theme was made
for clearlooks engine before clearlooks switched to Cairo hence a few
settings in the non-cairo theme are missing. Probably just need to re-
port LegacyHuman from the latest clearlooks theme to fix this.

Note: moving to Cairo made the otherwise fast clearlooks engine perform
quite a bit slower which affects legacyhuman. Not sure what can be done
about this though.

[Bug 36251] Re: Unreadable Font Size for GDM Login/Password

2006-09-30 Thread Philip Ganchev
I think size 14 or bigger for both the labels and the text box would be
better for desktop and lapop displays.

This would make more certain that the label and the typed username are
readable. This is important.

For small screens like PDAs there are separate projects (GPE, Familiar,
etc) that can set a diferent font size there if necessary.

[Bug 60760] Re: turning off autohinting has no effect

2006-09-30 Thread Ming Hua
Okay, apparently I didn't hear the whole story. Now I've talked with
him more, I hope I get it right this time.

There has been a bug in xft since the beginning about reading autohint
setting of fontconfig properly, it existed in both 2.1.8.2 and 2.1.10.
The symptom of the bug is that it can only read the turn on autohint
setting from fontconfig, but not the turn off autohint setting.

However, before freetype 2.2, it turns off autohint by default, so even
if xft didn't get the turn off autohint setting from fontconfig, it
will just use the default setting of freetype, so everything is good.

Since freetype 2.2, the autohint is turned on by default. Now even if
fontconfig specifies no autohint, as xft can't read it, it will use the
freetype default, which is autohint on. Therefore it seems the freetype
upgrade causes this bug. However, the real culprit is xft.

He showed me the following patch for xft 2.1.8.2, which should fix the
not reading autohint-off setting from fontconfig issue:

[Bug 16374] Re: Ooo Write font selection bug in right-to-left editing mode

2006-09-30 Thread towsonu2003
1. In Ooo Write, with keyboard set to USA, type anything, say hello.
 2. Switch to arabic keyboard (gnome switcher)
 3. Place the cursor within hello.
 4. Change font.
 5. Type something

I can confirm this with a Turkish keyboard as well. very simple to see:

1. set keyboard to turkish qwerty (others might also work)
2. type hello (something)
3. switch to arabic keyboard
4. change font
5. place cursor inside the word hello
6. type something
7. watch as the font changes to dejavu sans.

Expected behavior:
at step 7, no change of fonts. the font you selected should stay as it is.

annoying indeed.

PS this is a Dapper up to date.

PSS. I'm pretty sure anyone running Edgy can test this real easily.

[Bug 63010] Re: Need dedicated runelevel for text mode (console)

2006-09-30 Thread Scott James Remnant
This has nothing to do with upstart (which doesn't even implement
runlevels), it's at most a request for gdm to change the runlevels that
it starts in -- and this is automatically rejected because both Debian
and Ubuntu have discussed this in the past and opted not to

It's simple for you to create such a runlevel, rename the
/etc/rc2.d/S13gdm to K13gdm. runlevel 2 will now not start X, you can
change /etc/inittab to make the default runlevel to be 3 if you desire

Synaptic should be able to tell you which repository a package came
from.

For example I just compiled a detailed bug report concerning the package
realplay (it installs realplayer 10, not 8) and then discovered that
launchpad didn't want it because it wasn't an ubuntu package, despite
the fact that the maintainer has an ubuntu.com email address. I just
cannot remember where it really came from. This was quite confusing and
a real waste of time. Maybe it was one automatix brought in from Edgy. I
guess I'll have to check.

[Bug 63113] Realplay crashes on opening Deutsche Welle video

2006-09-30 Thread Robert Persson
Public bug reported:

(Standalone) Realplayer 10 (package realplay from the Canonical
repository) crashes on opening video streams from Deutsche Welle. The
two videos I have tried play fine using the RealPlayer plugin in
Firefox.

I was able to open a video from another source without any problem
(http://mediaarchive.ksc.nasa.gov//dynavideo/dyna_smil.cfm?mediaid=30154alang=enuseMP4=falsefilename=vstream1.ksc.nasa.gov/odv/ma/STS115/ksc_092206_115_overviewformat=rm

The videos that failed both come from links on http://www.dw-
world.de/dw/0,2142,4753,00.html

Here is what happens when I open one of the videos (Kultur.21) in a
terminal:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/.mozilla/firefox$ realplay
rtsp://a1175.v143424.c14342.g.vr.akamaistream.net/ondemand/7/1175/14342/v0001/ondemand.dw-world.de/dwtv_video/kg/kg20060923.rm
The program 'realplay.bin' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)'.
  (Details: serial 38 error_code 8 request_code 140 minor_code 13)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

[Bug 60236] Re: Firefox Segmentation Fault Requires Reboot

2006-09-30 Thread Tero Karvinen
I find it unlikely that the machine would have been running out of
memory. The machine showing this behavior has a GiB of memory. Other
software run well after firefox segfault. For example, I could browse
the web with konqueror. I have tried disabling my profile my renaming
~/.mozilla, and that did not help. Even though I think this answers your
questions, I will try 'free -m' and 'firefox safe-mode' when I can
reproduce the bug next time. Thanks for looking into this bug.

[Bug 31291] Re: Ondemand governor for cpufreq put the CPU at maximum frequency always

2006-09-30 Thread Robert Persson
I have found frequency scaling not to be working on my pentium 4 box
when it did work on the previous Gentoo installation (which
unfortunately I have trashed so I won't be able to tell you which kernel
I was using beyond that it was a 2.6.15 variant).

What I would expect to happen would be for me to drop the gnome
frequency scaling applet on the top bar and be able to choose my
governor or frequency. Instead I get a message saying frequency scaling
is not supported. Perhaps there are some kernel modules I need to
modprobe, but this is the kind of thing that should work out of the box.

The processor is a hyperthreading P4 and the motherboard is an Asus p4p-
800se (intel 865 chipset).

[Bug 57502] Re: JMicron PATA/SATA Controller does not work

2006-09-30 Thread dgamble
I also tried the 20060928 daily (alternate, 64-bit) image, and I too
have the same result that Joel Ebel had. The Dapper install fails in
the way described in the first post. I also tried uplugging the SATA
drive and just booted with the pair of PATA optical drives; no change.

MSI P965 Neo, Core 2 Duo E6400.

Anything I could provide or do to help get this issue finally resolved?
I am really hoping I am not stuck with Windows.

[Bug 63116] when doing a file copy nautilus should provide noclobber as a button

2006-09-30 Thread Paul O'Malley
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

When copying files from one location to another the use of no clobber would be
useful with nautilus.
Use case one:
where moving apt-get archives on a usb device (external drive) and the full
archive from one machine is being moved to another
Use case two:
where moving photos from a camera that is not auto detected such as the
olympus camedia c-370

So an extra button called copy new files only or something like that
needs to be in place.

[Bug 63114] Human progress bar shading does not line up properly

2006-09-30 Thread z_diver
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntu-artwork

Admitidly this is a minor bug, but it's also one that has already been
addressed by Richard Stellingwerf on the 8th of September when he
submitted a new design for the progressbar in human.

I've posted a screenshot of the current Edgy knot3 progressbar with the issue
here:
http://lagunadata.com/ubuntu/expanded-progressbar-orig.png

And the updated version from Richard here:
http://lagunadata.com/ubuntu/expanded-screenshot-pb1.png

Notice how the orange fill and the shading on the glass tube are lined
up on the updated version while they are way off on the first. Much
nicer IMO.

[Bug 62977] Re: Upgrade to edgy fails because of missing pyversions

2006-09-30 Thread Stefan van der Walt
I simply did

aptitude update
aptitude upgrade

but I know of another user who had the same problem. I'll find out
which method he used.

And yes, I have ubuntu-minimal (which depends on python-minimal, I see)
installed. As for the initial report: I am not 100% sure whether
python-minimal was installed or whether I had to install it myself (I'd
guess it was, given that ubuntu-minimal is). I *did* however need to
create the symlink, since there was no 'pyversions' available on the
path.

Thanks
Stéfan

Re: [Bug 57502] Re: JMicron PATA/SATA Controller does not work

2006-09-30 Thread Ante Karamatić
IDE devices, connected to IDE part of Jmicron controller now work. SATA
disks connected to SATA part of Jmicron controller also work, but it's
not possible to boot from it (grub error 15, iirc).

ICH8 SATA controller doesn't work. This is a known situation. This is
another bug and is totally unrelated to this bug.

In Dapper is other way arround. ICH8 works, but Jmicron doesn't. So, you
can easily install Dapper using PXE boot/install.

So, there's no need for anymore confirmation. ICH8 bug is real and
known.

/etc/hosts is a config file and not an application. you have to use an
editor to modify it. run editor /etc/hosts in a terminal. could be
that you need to boot into recovery mode to do the corresponding changes
or even use a desktop cd and access your file system from the live
system.

[Bug 63002] Re: Static IP configuration fails in Ubuntu-6.10-beta

2006-09-30 Thread yaohuizhu
Sorry for the oversimplicity of my report.

My problem is more like those reported in bug 58705 and 59690. Bug 59690
have described the problem in detail:

How to reproduce:

- Go to System, Administration, Networking
- Select wired connection
- Change Configuration to: Static IP address
- Configure your IP, Mask and gateway
- Open a shell and type route

Result:
- No default route exists
- The gateway is not saved in the form

PS: I didn't use Network Manager at that time.

[Bug 57360] Re: [debian-multimedia] Sync dvdrip

2006-09-30 Thread Sebastian Dröge
Ok, it seems that video-dvdrip source package was renamed to dvdrip on
debian multimedia. It was intended to sync the dvdrip package in the
beginning, not video-dvdrip.

After syncing this video-dvdrip should probably be deleted from the
archive.

Is a UVF exception still needed for this sync request that was requested
and done some time ago but not correctly?

[Bug 62587] Re: The Arabic Write error !

2006-09-30 Thread Isam Bayazidi
This is a known issue in Xorg/XFree86 .. It is indeed a major bug, but I
think that the problem is that it is not possible to map a keyboard key
to 2 characters.. last I checked (2 years ago) it was not possible to do
so.. Now the Big problem is, the keyaboard definition of Arabic in X
(KDE/Gnome,etc) map the LAM_ALEF glyph (presentation form) to the key..
which is a major mistake because it breaks iconv and recode conversion
of text, as the presentation form should NEVER be stored in a file, and
having it mapped in the keybaord layout break that.
