[Bug 61276] Re: TP R52, if suspend for $several hours, resume from suspend fails, X dies+respawns

2006-12-13 Thread Onno Benschop
I have a 18586MM and I do not see any behaviour like that. It has an
Intel on board video and 1.5Gb of RAM.

Which model R52 are you experiencing this issue with? I suspect that
this is an ATI-based model.

See: http://thinkwiki.org/wiki/Category:R52 for more details.

[Bug 67906] Re: CPU Temperature significantly higher in Edgy than in Dapper

2006-12-13 Thread Onno Benschop
In case this helps, my 18586MM shows this in Edgy:

/sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq$ cat stats/time_in_state
1733000 1053729
1333000 22753
1066000 27545
80 1537

It feels warmer than when I was running Debian and seems to get warm
quicker. It also doesn't appear to run on batteries nearly as long under
Edgy. I'm not able to watch a 1.5hour DVD on a 100% charge, it lasts
about 1 hour under those conditions.

I'm not logging that as a separate bug, I'm just noting this as a side-
effect, perhaps related to CPU temperature, perhaps not.

[Bug 72744] Re: Wesnoth installs with no campaigns

2006-12-13 Thread Morgan Collett
I installed wesnoth and it took me ages to figure out why clicking
Campaign had no effect -- because there were no campaigns installed. I
had installed Wesnoth with Add/Remove... (on Edgy) and there are no
campaign packages visible there. If I had used synaptic I would probably
have noticed them.

So I think this bug would be solved by listing the campaigns in
Add/Remove... and by updating the description of the Wesnoth package to
indicate that campaigns should also be installed.

[Bug 46778] Re: prompt required in terminal box

2006-12-13 Thread Sebastian Heinlein
There is no way to get this information. Furthermore user input in
postinst should not be used and is a violation of the Ubuntu packaging
principles. So this would always be a bug of the package itself. That is
why there is debconf. Dist-upgrader and synaptic will show the terminal
after a short timeout automatically.

f-prot-installer already seems to use debconf. But I assume that you
don't run a default Ubuntu desktop? Please check if libgnome2-perl is
installed on your system. So you can get a graphical representation of
debconf questions.

But it seems to be a bug here. That we don't show the terminal if there
is only a text viewer for debconf.

I had the same problem, mainly when using Nxserver to connect to my

I had an error in my /etc/hosts file, I fixed it, but I was still having
the problem. I discovered by accident that the problem was ESD. So if
you go in the sound preferences and disable ESD, it may work again. I
can't be sure at 100%, as it seems there are several reasons for this
problem.

But that was very clearly the reason for me, now I can login quickly no

Hope it helps.

[Bug 50335] Re: Load average never below 1.5 on dapper

2006-12-13 Thread Onno Benschop
** Description changed:

When I boot dapper (upgraded from breezy via apt-get dist-upgrade) on my
laptop (IBM ThinkPad R52, 1.7Ghz, 1GB, Ati X300 - pcix), load average is
always above or at 1.5. I turn on my laptop, boot dapper, log in, and
after 15 minutes i do 'uptime', and the load average is 1.5. When I
issue 'top', and sort by CPU usage (shift-f l) i see that most cpu time
went to Xorg, then to thinkpad-keys and then to multiload-applet-2.
Xorg, according to top, took only 15 seconds of CPU time. I'm not sure
how accurate top is on gathering those information.

When I boot dapper with 2.6.12 kernel, and replay what I mentioned
above, load average is 0.05 with top times almost the same as with
  2.6.15 kernel.

I tried removing fglrx driver both from xorg.conf and putting it in
/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist, the results are the same.

On home desktop PC (Intel D850MV mb, 1.7Ghz P4, 768 MB RAMBUS, ATA disk
driver) 2.6.15 works ok (also dapper upgraded from breezy), load
- avereage is 0.12, and I have firefox and evolution runnnig.

[Bug 75549] Re: Cannot upgrade Dapper-Edgy without update-manager

2006-12-13 Thread Michael Vogt
Please note that we are working on a server upgrade tool that brings the
benefits of update-manager to the server:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ServerUpgradeTool

I think the documentation should be made more clear. Update-manager is
strongly recommended, but apt-get dist-upgrade should will still work.
You need to careful check what it wants to do and check the release
notes. Stuff that update-manager is doing mostly automatically.

Cheers,
 Michael

[Bug 72212] Re: Developers don't get enough thanks

2006-12-13 Thread Risto H. Kurppa
I can confirm this bug. It's been around for a while and hits me every
now and then when running Ubuntu, no matter what version (I've tried
breezy, dapper, edgy, feisty). I don't know if there will ever be a
final fix released for this but I'm sure everyone is doing their best to
get this fixed.

[Bug 72304] Re: Deleted items folder name doesn't make sense

2006-12-13 Thread Joachim Noreiko
Sridhar,
Consistency across the desktop is a very good thing to aim for.
Adopting an existing term instead of pulling a new one out of a hat is also a
very good idea.

However, the existing term you've picked is not satisfactory.
Users may be aware of what it means to delete a file, but anyone can see that a
menu item 'Delete from Deleted Items folder' is just silly.

Your choice of term was by design, but the consequences is has are
buggy: hence the bug report.

I apologize for being too hasty initially -- you're right, I should have signed
up to the list before diving in to the wiki.
But I must ask you to reopen this and address it. You've still not actually
justified the specific choice of 'Deleted Items'.
In changing the 'Trash/Delete' concept to 'Delete/Permanently Delete' you're
not translating the interface, you are redesigning it, and that isn't your job.

[Bug 49127] Re: Long file names are truncated without warning

2006-12-13 Thread Andi
Hi,
sry, but I think this is a problem with NOT truncating the file names, as they
are long but not long enough to not follow the RockRidge preferences.
However, they are too long for Joliet players, so the files aren't even
identified by this players.
I had this problem not long ago, and I was wondering why some files weren't
played in my car stereo, though xmms/mpg321 played them.
After I burnt them with k3b, which gives respect to the Joliet preferences in
the burn dialog and thus telling you to shorten the file names to an
appropriate length, my car stereo plays them as usual.

Greetings,
Andi

[Bug 47705] Re: Broken install should provide some guidance

2006-12-13 Thread Tancred Lindholm
A bit of clarification: what happened was that the config of a package
(pcmcia-cs I think) caused a hard crash + reboot. Thus, on reboot, I
needed to manually invoke dpkg form the command line to finish off the
install. At that point it would have been nice to have a message saying
something like

Your upgrade was unexpectedly interrupted (power failure, hardware
problem, system crash). Type dpkg ... to resume

I don't recall the exact state of the X11 packages at that point, but I
think it was more of a missing/half-configured packages problem than
that the actual X config files were broken. (X came up nicely after dpkg
had finished.)

[Bug 75581] Mathematica plugin for TeXmacs broken in Edgy

2006-12-13 Thread Andrea Gamba
Public bug reported:

Also the Mathematica plugin (as well as the Maple and Maxima plugins) is
broken in Ubuntu Edgy, since the file tm_mathematica.c is missing from
the distribution.

The simple fix is to go to the page www.texmacs.org, download an rpm for
the last version of texmacs (1.0.6.7), extract the directory
plugin/mathematica and use it to substitute the plugin in
/usr/share/texmacs/TeXmacs/plugins. Everything should work then (checked
with Mathematica 5.2).

Please correct these bugs: texmacs is extremely useful as an interface
to various mathematical programs, but the user should be allowed to run
the plugins seamlessly.

TeXmacs has the potential to become a standard for the production of
scientific papers, and that's a pity that Ubuntu is not supporting it as
it deserves (how is it that most bugs in TeXmacs are still unconfirmed
although they are so easily reproduced and fixed?)

Public bug reported:

Hi,
I suspect this to be a unionfs issue.

Steps to reproduce:

- Boot on Edgy Live CD i386
- When desktop is ready, open a nautilus window for ~
- Open another window for somewhere deep e.g:
/lib/modules/2.6.17-10-generic/kernel/drivers/usb
- In a terminal, do
  cd ~
  sudo mv -ft . /lib/modules/2.6.17-10-generic/kernel/drivers/usb/net

Symptoms:

As expected, the 'net' directory appears in the first nautilus window.
But when doing 'reload', it disappears !
Doing ls in the terminal confirms that: the 'net' directory seems absent.

Additionaly, if the command is invoked again:

  sudo mv -ft . /lib/modules/2.6.17-10-generic/kernel/drivers/usb/net

.. then this error is shown:

  mv: cannot move
`/lib/modules/2.6.17-10-generic/kernel/drivers/usb/net' to a
subdirectory of itself, `./net'

This behavior is extremely nasty for people using the edgy LiveCD as a means to
test things safely :(
Any clue about how to disable unionfs on some mountpoints ?

FYI: I experienced the same kind of qwirks with an 'amd64' LiveCD.

Regards.

[Bug 65777] Re: Texmacs does not register text/texmacs mime extension, not recognized by gnome

2006-12-13 Thread Andrea Gamba
The description of the bug does not reflect the subject of the bug
report, but the subject is correct: text/texmacs mime extensions are not
correctly recognized in gnome, so that it is not possible for instance
to open a .tm document by just clicking on it.

[Bug 75447] Re: Incorrect group permissions in /etc/nagios

2006-12-13 Thread Lionel Porcheron
I just test it on a fresh Edgy install, and all files belongs to group www-data
(only cgi.cfg is root:root).
Did you do something (run an external configuration script for Nagios) that
could have change this ?

[Bug 75186] Re: error with the Synapic updater Edgy eft 6.10

2006-12-13 Thread Michael Vogt
Thanks for your bugreport.

If you still can find a google-earth deb package in
/var/cache/apt/archives/, then please try to install it with dpkg -i
fullpath/to/package/ and remove it later with dpkg --purge google-
earth. This is the the best I can do for now.

I'm sorry, but I have to reject this bug. I have no information how
automatix installed google earth. I was looking for a deb package but
couldn't find one. Hints where I can find the deb package would be
appreciated, I can have a look at it then.

Cheers,
 Michael
