[Bug 83380] Error while starting E-Gnome
Public bug reported: My notebook is pretty slow (867MHz Crusoe), so I want to use Enlightenment instead of whatever Gnome suggests. E starts up fine on its own (and is noticeable faster), but I get an error trying to start the session named 'E-GNOME' from GDM. Here is what my ~/.xsession-errors says: Xsession: unable to launch starte16 GNOME X session --- starte16 GNOME not found; falling back to default session. I can't find Edgy's files which manage these sessions, nor could I google anything about this error. 'starte16' does exist twice on my system, once in /usr/bin and once in /usr/bin/X11. [Bug 83384] RFE: JConsole should have a menu entry
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: sun-java6-jdk When the Sun Java SE 6 JDK is installed, jconsole (Java Monitoring Management Console) is installed, but no Menu Entry is created. jconsole is a GUI application which is part of the JDK (not JRE) since Java 1.5. [Bug 82451] Re: (Feisty) DBUS hangs after Gnome Login
It seems to happen when trackerd is not yet ready to accept requests yet (I think it's validating its index), but deskbar initializes its tracker bits. For some reason, this makes it try to start another trackerd (according to my trace), which exits immediately because another trackerd is already running (from /etc/xdg/autostart). This exiting generates an untrapped error in the Python code. Killing deskbar after login, and then reloading it (trackerd is done validating its cache by then), makes it work. -- (Feisty) DBUS hangs after Gnome Login https://launchpad.net/bugs/82451 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Because there shouldn't be one. There was no warning when the default X switched from XFree to X.org, because non-broken programs don't know the difference. Re: [Bug 82451] Re: (Feisty) DBUS hangs after Gnome Login
Martijn van de Streek schrieb: It seems to happen when trackerd is not yet ready to accept requests yet (I think it's validating its index), but deskbar initializes its tracker bits. Try to remove the deskbar from the panel and login again in gdm. Do you also have the problem with the missing drive icons and the hanging dbus? I think the tracker problem is triggered by a dbus error. This is consistent with your statement, because when dbus is not available the tracker plugin is not able to find the trackerd, but the trackerd uses another criteria to find whether another trackerd is running. [Bug 83167] Re: X freezes after fglrx install via app-installer
Update #2: installed all available updates today, including the revised 8.32.5 fglrx driver - no change in issue. Even more interesting is that gedit will not launch unless the system is booted without the network attached as listed above. Attempting to launch gedit after connecting network results in nothing (sudo), or a white, empty box (gksudo). In response to this, I installed leafpad, which works without issue no matter what state the machine is in. Removed/purged all driver files and manually built 8.33.6 driver only to have the build fail. Launched ATI graphical installer, but this also failed. Brought machine back up with Mesa drivers: still won't boot with net cable attached. Retested gedit failure: still present. Interesting: just launching gedit works fine, it's only when invoked via sudo or gksudo that the problem appears. Still no error messages. This bug has now been open for 2 months, and the realistic life of Edgy will be over in about another 2. I have another update I'd like to do, but haven't been able to do it because I'm waiting on this bug. Although I haven't spent that much time preparing these fixes and chasing this bug around, I have spent some time on it. I'd quite like to know if it is worth chasing stable release updates for ubuntu-docs or not; or if I should simply concentrate my time on the next release of Ubuntu. To be totally honest, I think the stable release update procedure is rather inflexible - I understand that for updates to X and such, thorough testing is required, but for packages like ubuntu-docs which generally involve easy fixes and/or text updates, two months to get the fix included (apart from any time spent making it) is a bit over the top. -- SRU: [Edgy] Upgraded documentation https://launchpad.net/bugs/74555 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 83396] Amarok doesn't use transparency for OSD when available
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: amarok Hi! Amarok has an OSD system that can show, for example, track changes. The OSD settings allow the user to choose the background color of the OSD window and the opacity of the background. (The text is always opaque.) Amarok does this using a trick: it captures the screen contents under the window, and paints the window background with this content, blended with the background color. Since it only does this at start, the transparency effect is ruined if whatever is below the OSD window changes. (For example, a window below moves.) Whenever desktop effects are available, i.e. there is a compositing manager, Amarok should use an alpha texture to make the OSD window really transparent. ** Affects: amarok (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- Amarok doesn't use transparency for OSD when available https://launchpad.net/bugs/83396 -- kubuntu-bugs mailing list kubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/kubuntu-bugs

[Bug 71913] Re: X appears to crash randomly
I can confirm this bug with an Intel G965 X3000 GMA. I'm using xorg- server-core-1.1.1-0ubuntu13 and linux-2.6.20-6-generic. My architecture is AMD64. A backtrace from /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old is similar to that of the original reporter: Backtrace: 0: /usr/X11R6/bin/X(xf86SigHandler+0x71) [0x487521] 1: /lib/libc.so.6 [0x2b9400cdbd40] 2: /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libGLcore.so(_mesa_update_draw_buffer_bounds+0x59) [0x2b94039bf5e9] 3: /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libGLcore.so [0x2b9403ada09d] 4: /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so [0x2b940208683b] 5: /usr/X11R6/bin/X(compPositionWindow+0x62) [0x550382] 6: /usr/X11R6/bin/X(ResizeChildrenWinSize+0x1bb) [0x43d77b] 7: /usr/X11R6/bin/X(miSlideAndSizeWindow+0x1af) [0x4e129f] 8: /usr/X11R6/bin/X(compResizeWindow+0xad) [0x55119d] 9: /usr/X11R6/bin/X(ConfigureWindow+0xb08) [0x43d238] 10: /usr/X11R6/bin/X(ProcConfigureWindow+0x96) [0x44e5d6] 11: /usr/X11R6/bin/X(Dispatch+0x1ba) [0x44ed4a] 12: /usr/X11R6/bin/X(main+0x455) [0x4379d5] 13: /lib/libc.so.6(__libc_start_main+0xf4) [0x2b9400cc88e4] 14: /usr/X11R6/bin/X(FontFileCompleteXLFD+0x231) [0x436cd9] Fatal server error: Caught signal 11. Re: [Bug 83392] cannot be started manually
On Mon, Feb 05, 2007 at 10:23:53AM -, Nikolaus Rath wrote: I just had to kill -9 NetworkManager since it ate up all CPU time. When trying to restart it, I encountered some problems. Neither was there a script in /etc/init.d, nor did the upstart start command work. I think there should be a way to manually start and stop NetworkManager. NetworkManager is a dbus service, so dbus starts it. If you want to restart NetworkManager manually, you can just kill it and run sudo NetworkManager and it will connect to DBUS and be ready to go.
