[Bug 83703] Trouble starting KDE after crash

2007-02-07 Thread Mike Vaughn
Public bug reported:

Not sure if this is exactly a bug - in short, my system crashed while Synaptic
was installing Gnome and XFCE. I didn't think to select the session type when
trying to log back in, and had some difficulty getting KDE started. A thorough
explanation is below.
Upon getting Kubuntu Feisty Fawn RC3 installed, I opened Adept Manager to
install Synaptic (which is always the first thing I do when installing
Kubuntu). I clicked Full Upgrade and there was a dialog saying a new release of
the distribution was available, and to click Next to upgrade to it. Upon
clicking Next, this window as well as Adept closed immediately. I repeated this
process a couple times, eventually deciding to just install Synaptic and get
things rolling.
I opened Synaptic and clicked Full Upgrade, and didn't any message resembling
the one I saw in Adept. It just showed me the list of packages to be installed
and updated as normal. I then proceeded to mark a rather large number of
packages for installation, among them fglrx, gnome-core, xfce4, nicotine,
audacity, nfs-common, nfs-kernel-server, and several dozen theme items
(kwin-baghira, gtk2-geramik, etc.). The total disk space to be used for the
installation of everything was between 400 and 500 megabytes. I clicked Apply
and opened System Settings to set up my keyboard shortcuts. After setting them
all up, I clicked Apply (Weary of a crash, I did this several times throughout
the process).
I pressed my hotkey for the launch menu (Alt+Z), and the launch menu came up.
After that, I was unable to do anything. The mouse cursor moved, but hovering
over buttons and menu entries gave no visual feedback; I also moved the cursor
to the top-left corner (my panel hotspot), but the panel didn't appear. It
appeared that Synaptic was still doing its thing, as the activity light on my
computer remained lit. I decided to wait until it appeared to be finished,
which took about 10 minutes, then restarted my X server via Ctrl+Alt+Backspace.
I was returned to the KDM login screen; I then tried to log back in. A few
seconds after entering my password, roughly 30 pixels width of the panel
briefly appeared and disappeared (I have it set to 100% length), then nothing.
No splash screen, no wallpaper, nothing-- just a mouse cursor I couldn't do
anything with. After repeating this process, I Ctrl+Alt+F1'd into a terminal
and ran startkde. It gave me a long list of errors (roughly appearing to be
the same type of errors I see whenever I start any graphical program from the
terminal), then said KDE has been started. I Ctrl+Alt+F7'd and found things the
same as when I went to the terminal. Ctrl+Alt+Backspace again, log back in,
same thing. Ctrl+Alt+F1, sudo apt-get update, sudo apt-get upgrade, no packages
to be installed/upgraded. nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf, Ctrl+X, ran the command to
reset my xorg.conf back to original settings. Repeated the logging into nothing
process. Then it finally occurred to me that I may need to select the session
type. I tried logging into a Gnome session, success. Logged back out, logged
into a KDE session without any problems.

[Bug 9138] Re: Network startup stalls boot

2007-02-07 Thread Spook
Having the same problem in Feisty Fawn on my laptop. Using network-
manager-gnome, so for me, trying to connect to my lan during boot is
really unnessesary. And when network-manager is installed by default in
Feisty, I really don't understand how this is happening?

Two bootcharts from my laptop - one with network cable attached, one
without.

With cable (1:20)
http://img147.imagevenue.com/view.php?image=30835_feisty_20070206_9_122_262lo.jpg

Without cable: (1:56)
http://img9.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=31456_feisty_20070206_8_122_25lo.JPG

Is there a way to disable this bootup network check? Seems kinda
redundant when Feisty is running Network-manager as default.

[Bug 83704] X hangs with NVidia error in kernel.log

2007-02-07 Thread Johan Walles
Public bug reported:

Sometimes (once or twice a week perhaps?), X hangs for me. I can still
move the mouse pointer around, but the rest of the screen has turned
into a screenshot. The mouse pointer doesn't change shape when I move
it over different stuff. I get no reaction from any keyboard commands
like c-a-backspace or c-a-f1.

When this happens I can ssh in from another system and do killall -9
Xorg. That makes gdb re-start the X server and everything is back to
normal.

I get this in my kernel.log when this happens:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/var/log # grep NVRM kern.log*|grep -v loading

This could potentially be a duplicate of bug 58019, but they don't
mention any kernel messages in there, and I haven't seen any WAIT
messages in my Xorg logs.

I use BasKet note pads under KDE (BasKet is docked in the panel). Every
time I open Kontact canlendar it automatically launches the BasKet
window which is a bit annoying. Maybe this is regarded as a feature, but
since I do not see a connection between the calendar application and a
notepad application and I do not see in the options a button to switch
off this feature. (but otherwise both Kontact and BasKet are great
applications).

[Bug 83716] Linux image contains buggy alternatives code

2007-02-07 Thread Michael
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.17-10-generic

The SMP alternatives code (dmesg: SMP alternatives: switching to ...
code) present in this package is known to be buggy, and can potentially
crash the kernel if an interrupt occurs during the alternatives
patching. This does actually occur particularly often when the kernel
is running on a virtual machine. This bug has been fixed in the
mainline kernel (I believe somewhere around 2.6.18.3). Perhaps you
could backport the fix?

[Bug 76193] Re: gnome-screenshot in Edgy crashes... but still works

2007-02-07 Thread Jean-Marie PIVETEAU
Hello,

I used GDB (apport seems more complicated to use).

I had to run gnome-panel-screenshot 14 times before the application
crashes.

You'll find in the attachment the trace of the last (fourteenth!) gnome-
panel-screenshot run.

Sorry but I don't know how to install the debug symbols for this application.
However, I did install gnome-panel-dbg, but I just see that this is not used
because file /usr/bin/gnome-panel shows that I have the stripped version.
Do you know how to activate the non-stripped copy of gnome-panel ?
I will try to find.

[Bug 83725] dell optiplex gx620, module tg3 initialisation slowness (slow boot)

2007-02-07 Thread mikmak
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.17-10-generic

Hi,

here is the dmesg of the boot, regarding tg3 loading and the card getting up.
As you can see it takes a while...
this is with edgy, I believe I installed some of these box with dapper in the
past and I did not notice such slowness, so maybe it's edgy only.
the slowness can be noticed during boot when dhclient is started, instead of
immediately showing immediately the dhclient output :
For info, please visit http://www.isc.org/sw/dhcp/
Listening on LPF/eth0/00:18:8b:1e:de:ac
dhclient: Sending on LPF/eth0/00:18:8b:1e:de:ac ...

it sits for a while on Listening on, it looks like it can't get acces
to eth0 to get the mac address.

this is edgy with all updates as of today of course :
Linux xx 2.6.17-10-generic #2 SMP Tue Dec 5 22:28:26 UTC 2006 i686 GNU/Linux
I have repeatedly seen this over at least 3 machines of this kind.
I also tried changing the other side of the network link (the switch), it did
not change this behavior at all.

[Bug 83719] error message at boot udev-event: unable to create db file [...]

2007-02-07 Thread Ulrich Lukas
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: udev

I'm using dm-crypt / cryptsetup an up-to-date Feisty installation.

After the latest upgrade, there is an error message displayed at boot
after I type in the passphrase for the first early crypto disc
(/etc/init.d/cryptdiscs-early).

The message says:
udevd-event[2492]: udev_db_add_device: unable to create db file
'/dev/.udev/db/[EMAIL PROTECTED]': No such file or directory

When I cd to the directory /dev/.udev/db/, ls -l [EMAIL PROTECTED] shows:
/dev/.udev/db/[EMAIL PROTECTED] - mapper/sdata

The subdirectory /dev/.udev/db/mapper to which the symlink points
doesn't exist.

Who/which process/script/package creates that directory? Are there some
udev-rules broken in the latest package?
If I create the directory /dev/.udev/db/mapper manually, it disappears after
a reboot.

I use BasKet note pads under KDE (BasKet is docked in the panel). Every

since I do not see a connection between the calendar application and a

Thank you for the work on that. The screenshot utility is shipped with

the crash can you type bt full to get the backtrace? What version of

[Bug 83726] [feisty-herd3] X Display in Power-Saving mode on Startup, LiveCD even

2007-02-07 Thread Stephen G
Public bug reported:

On startup I need to move my mouse or press a key to get the display to
come back. It is like it goes into power-saving mode seconds after
initializing the X display, as I get X for the mouse int he center of
the display just before when I would expect the beige background to
appear, and then the monitor stops receiving a video signal.

Steps to reproduce:
1.) Power up and boot Feisty-Herd3 LiveCD.
Wait several minutes to finish boot, giving at least 30 seconds after there is
no more drive activitity.

[Display will be blank. On my CRT the power light turns amber
indicating there is no video signal.]

3.) Move mouse or press any key
Gnome Desktop appears.

The only things that might offer a clue:
  If I Alt-F1 I see
agpgart: Aperture conflicts with PCI mapping
bog1_init failed: setting screen sze: Cannot allocate memory
   screen init failed

   Then, at bottom of screen:
   kernel alive
   kernel direct mapping tables up to 1 @ 8000 - d000
However I've discovered on subsequent boots that those appear well before X is
started.

I doubt this is related but the only other anomoly is that there is a Crash
report detected notifier on the system tray, which then says Add/Remove
failed, and I can then submit a crash report on gnome-app-install.

.postrm script dies when it tries to remove firestarter hook from /etc
/dhclient-exit-hooks. workaround is to manually remove the hook and then
purge.

[Bug 83713] Re: gaim does not connect to any network since network-manager was installed

2007-02-07 Thread Erik Chakravarty
Yes, an apt-get upgrade installed network-manager some time ago, but
this package does not seem to do anything except cause other desktop
components to stop functioning.

Perhaps network-manager should be removed from the distribution if it
cannot be made to work and only serves to break the rest of the desktop.
