if you change the hostname underneath it, so this should only be done at
boot time, not when changing the lease at runtime.

All looks to be going well in this log, all the wpa_supplicant parts
seem OK, but this last part is where it fails:

Gnome-session doesn't handle overlapping viewports well. It just creates
a overlay window for every screen whether they overlap or not.
The different shades of transparency seen in lock.jpg should be less
prominent with the latest patch on feisty and as all this fading is
quite an ugly hack it

Done some more testing, think this issue is with wpa_supplicant
I can connect to non secure and WEP networks, as long as they are not
the same SSID as a failed WPA connection.
Sometimes a WPA connection will work if you change the security of a WEP
to WPA and re-connect.

in my case compiz starts through desktop-effects. but again glxinfo
doesn't show the extension
the only thing that I can see in compiz is
libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x4b
