[Bug 120662] aptitude doesn't report broken package dependencies

Public bug reported:

Running sudo apt-get install gmailfs tells the real reason why it can't be
done.
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
gmailfs: Depends: python-fuse (= 2.2-2) but it is not going to be installed
E: Broken packages

 Please look into it.

[Bug 120663] Removable drives not working properly

2007-06-16 Thread ricardisimo
Public bug reported:

My DVDRW and CDRW drives are not working properly. I think the quickest
way to describe the problem is a link to my posts in UbuntuForums
(http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=470641).

The longer version is this:

Ever since my upgrade to Feisty, the side panel in Nautilus has had to
icons that should have linked to either of my removable media drives.
Instead they would inform me that the drive in question did not exist. I
attempted by various means in /etc/fstab to correct the problem, but
instead it just kept getting worse. Even though I copied my original
fstab and eventually replaced it, my system never recovered.

Currently, DVDs are functionally invisible in the DVDRW tray. They will
play in the CDRW, however. CDs are functionally invisible in either tray
to everything except Sound Juicer. I mean EVERYTHING... no k3b, no
Nautilus, no XMMS or Audacious. Nothing.

Here's my current fstab (with the pertinent lines from it's predecessor
commented out):
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.

Thanks Micah for the quick reply and assigning this bug yourself.

Sorry, I think you are absolutely right, I only doubt that this slow startup is

I think this issue depends entirely on the system settings and performance of
the computer or this might be a bash issue.

[Bug 63544] Re: Volume control key controls speaker not headphones

2007-06-16 Thread Paul
To be more specific:

PCM controls program output... The best way I can think to describe it
is what Wave would be in Windows. It does not control everything, but
likely everything that your programs output. If, for instance, you are
using MIDI, it will not have an impact if the MIDI has its own control.
Microphones, Line-In, etc. all have their own controls and will not be
controlled by PCM volume.

Master relates to speaker output only. Headphones relates to the
headphone output only. Master is a bit misleading and it took me a
while to figure it out. I personally think this is a great setup
because it allows for more control over things.

However, what you CAN do if you would like to have better control over
your sound is in System-Preferences-Sound. Highlight Master, hold
down CTRL and click on Headphone and have the buttons control BOTH of
those which will give you true control over the sound levels you want.

I was actually having the same problem until I stumbled upon this
thread. The info here was able to help me achieve my ultimate goal and
I figured I'd share the info. The reason PCM doesn't suffice for me is
because if I I plug my bass into my line-in for instance, the volume
keys would have no impact on it. Actually, I have my desktop chained
into my laptop for sound. My line-in always has my desktop connected to
it. Even if I lower or mute PCM, the desktop will come through loud and
clear unless I do something to my Mic or Line-In [don't remember which
is which.] Anyway I hope this helps.

[Bug 120669] No player can play screencasts recorded with Istanbul

2007-06-16 Thread Grzegorz Galezowski
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: istanbul

Hi,
I recently updated Istanbul and was pleased, that the bug which made Istanbul
hang on recording of full screen in 1280x800 (wide screen laptop) was gone. But
then it appeared, that, though I can record such screencasts, all players I
have (Totem, MPlayer, Helix) refuse to play the video file I have saved. It
seems strange, because when i finish recording the screencast, I can view it in
Istanbul's 'Save Screencast' dialog, and, after saving it to the desktop (for
example by the name movie.ogg), the screencast icon is represented by a frame
from the movie, so it looks like 'something' can recognize it after all. But
when I try to start it, Totem appears for a while, and then shuts down. Other
mentioned players don't even seem to recognize the file as correct Theora movie.
This occurs only after I choose Full Size from recording options. Totem
doesn't have any problems with full screen movie recorded with half width and
height. Also, when I choose Full size, but select smaller (than full screen)
area in Select area to record, everything seems fine as well.

[Bug 120670] Second suspend hangs with password dialog and frozen keyboard

2007-06-16 Thread Steinar Bang
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.20

The machine is a Dell D610 laptop, with an ATI Mobility X300 screen card
(M300 chip set), Dell 1370 TrueMobile WLAN (Broadcom chip set).

On Feisty the first suspend and awakening works find, but when I attempt
to suspend the second time the machine works for a while, and then the
screen darkens, and eventually the password dialog normally presented at
wake up, is shown. However, the keyboard is frozen, so pressing the
power button for five minutes is the only way out.

When hibernating I may be able to to several awakenings and hibernates,
but eventually I run into the same problem.

I'm always successful in suspending or hibernating, the first time I
try.

Suspend/resume worked flawlessly for nearly a year with Dapper on this
machine.

On Breezy I only had hibernate.

The system was upgraded from Breezy to Dapper, but the Feisty is a fresh
reinstall.

[Bug 113457] Re: No WMF file conversion

Further to my above, I had to re-install Kubuntu 7.04 (AMD64) on my

no .WMF file conversion?

However, after about a week the conversion choice appeared in the right

So I'm not sure if this is in fact a bug at all unless you count the
first week after install.

/var/log/kern.log.0 after reboot, after a suspend failed with displaying
a password dialog, and with a frozen keyboard.

I was going to send along the kern.log.0 after hibernate failed for me a
couple of days later. But the two kern.log.0 files are identical, both
wrt. to size and timestamp, and according to diff. So I'm sending just
the one. But I've kept the current kern.log file in case that contains
interesting stuff as well.

[Bug 96651] Re: Default Java in KUbuntu needs Gtk support

2007-06-16 Thread xlinuks
Very good decision to include Sun's JRE. Hopefully the next generation
Consumer JRE which Sun promises to provide rather soon for windows
will be available for (K)Ubuntu too, but even if not, it will still be a
BIG improvement to include the last version of Sun's JRE instead of the
GNU one (the difference between GNU's last version (1.4) and Sun's (1.6)
is huge in both performance and functionality, IMHO that's one of (many
but important) reasons why people adopt python and perl on Linux rather
than Java ).

[Bug 120669] Re: No player can play screencasts recorded with Istanbul

2007-06-16 Thread Alan Pope
I record screencasts with other applications (not istanbul), and
sometimes the high resolution (1024x768 and above) ones don't play on
some machines. I believe this is down to a problem with the video
memory/driver rather than istanbul itself. This is confirmed by the fact
that you have tried multiple players - totem uses the gstreamer backend
by default and mplayer doesn't. So I'd say that rules out totem and
mplayer, the fact that I get the same with other non-gstreamer-based
screen recorders says it's not the recorder either.

Can you confirm what video chipset you have? I have noticed this problem
on machines with Intel video chipsets.

[Bug 104037] Re: prism2 doesn't work with network-manager

2007-06-16 Thread Stefan
Thanks very much for the patched modules, now works for me with
2.6.20-16-generic kernel and Netgear MA111 v1 USB.

Had to change a couple of settings (i.e. deactivate roaming mode), but it seems
to be working fine with WEP now (after entering the key as xx:xx:xx:xx:...
instead of xxx...).
Some error messages can be found in the logs though, i.e.
dmesg:
[ 36.673137] p80211: no version for struct_module found: kernel tainted.
[ 710.006358] hfa384x_usbctlx_complete_sync: CTLX[3] error: state(Request
failed)
[ 710.006368] prism2sta_commsqual_defer: error fetching commsqual

There seem to be some issues when switching users (i.e. network strength
icon vanishes), but as long as it works, this is ok for me.

[Bug 111032] Usability glitches in default browser selection

2007-06-16 Thread Hagy Hag
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

In the Kubuntu system settings module, component standard programs,
selection Webbrowser.

I would expect a choice between installed Brwosers which are Konqueror
and Firefox as the KDE default browser.

In stead it says: standard component
obove a text bescribtion of component

--- obviously two times a different meaning of component

Open address, which starts with http or https

--- You have to understand what http and https is. In fact open
address is misleading as this is not the action executed by the
dialogue but rather a setting

first selection in a program that is based on the content of the address
second selection : with the following webbrowser and file selection dialogue

the whole dialogue is pretty confusing, screenshot attached.

2007-06-16 Thread Alan Pope
Are you using the i810 driver (see /etc/X11/xorg.conf or the intel
modesetting one).

I just did a test with istanbul 0.2.2 under Gutsy recording at 1400x1050
with the Intel 945 chipset and it played back in mplayer and totem fine.

I am using the intel modesetting driver xserver-xorg-video-intel.

[Bug 105490] Re: [Feisty] Swap partition receives new UUID

2007-06-16 Thread berkes
Has been troubling me too.
My fix around this is to change fstab and make it use the old and proven
none-uuid devices
  # /dev/hda5
  /dev/sda5 none swap sw 0 0

Certainly not a /real/ solution, more a hack to make things work again,
so to say.

However, this broke several times because during updates ubunty switched
my disks from hda5 to sda5 twice already. That, however, is an entirely
different issue.

I still have the same issue. What I failed to indicate (sorry for that) is that
the source document is a MS Office Word document.
If you would also like to receive the source document, can you please indicate
how I can sent this to you (it is work related and therefore I rather not have
it posted as an attachment)
Find attached a sample of the export result.

[Bug 120665] Report Needed

2007-06-16 Thread Hilario J. Montoliu \(hjmf\)
Thank you Sascha Morr for submitting this report.

Could you please try to obtain a backtrace by following the instructions
on [1], or upload the crash report that probably was generated during
the crash and that should be located at /var/crash/ to [2].

Please indicate which extensions/plugins do you have enabled; and if
this crash is reproducible describe the steps that lead to it (it is
very important for us to have a test case for each crash).

This will greatly aid us in tracking down your problem.

Thanks in advance.

[Bug 120621] Re: [gutsy]gnash 0.8.0 will not play youtube, auto codec installation not working, other videos not working

2007-06-16 Thread John Vivirito
Testing done with epiphany.

1. Went to youtube.com and Opened a video
2. It played as expected
3. Uninstalled gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg to see if easy-codec-install works
properly.
4. Clicked on video to play it and the easy-codec-install dialog popped up so i
installed gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg as it said
5. Played video as expected

Browsers tested firefox 2.0, epiphany-browser, iceape-browser and all
seems to work as expected.

Thomas are these the steps that you are doing or any part of them to
reproduce this issue? Are you using 32bit or 64bit system to reproduce
this issue?

[Bug 74454] Re: [network-admin] net-mgr doesn't remember location

2007-06-16 Thread Glyn
I did a bit more investigation of the problem to see if it could be
patched. /etc/resolv.conf appears to be the definitive place where the
network settings are stored. This file starts with:

# generated by NetworkManager, do not edit!

I checked the source of gnome-system-tools with:

grep -R NetworkManager *

and found no instances, so I guess the file must be written by another
component, such as dhcp. This is true even when network-admin is used to
change the settings. Clearly more investigation is required, but I
thought I'd mention this in case anyone else is thinking of developing a
patch. (I have found a very satisfactory application-specific
workaround, so my motivation is waning.)
