[Bug 120663] Removable drives not working properly
Public bug reported: My DVDRW and CDRW drives are not working properly. I think the quickest way to describe the problem is a link to my posts in UbuntuForums (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=470641). The longer version is this: Ever since my upgrade to Feisty, the side panel in Nautilus has had to icons that should have linked to either of my removable media drives. Instead they would inform me that the drive in question did not exist. I attempted by various means in /etc/fstab to correct the problem, but instead it just kept getting worse. Even though I copied my original fstab and eventually replaced it, my system never recovered. Currently, DVDs are functionally invisible in the DVDRW tray. They will play in the CDRW, however. CDs are functionally invisible in either tray to everything except Sound Juicer. I mean EVERYTHING... no k3b, no Nautilus, no XMMS or Audacious. Nothing. Here's my current fstab (with the pertinent lines from it's predecessor commented out): # /etc/fstab: static file system information. # # file system mount point type options dump pass proc/proc procdefaults0 0 # /dev/hda1 UUID=5cbae883-1ea5-4909-a0f7-25dd778ffc45 / ext3 defaults,errors=remount-ro 0 1 # /dev/hda5 UUID=1cfc19bb-b5dc-4199-8498-7bb897ec58f6 noneswapsw 0 0 /dev/sdb1 /media/storage ext3 defaults 0 0 #/dev/hdc/media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user, noauto 0 0 /dev/scd0 /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user, noauto 0 0 #/dev/hdd/media/cdrom1 udf,iso9660 user, noauto 0 0 /dev/scd1 /media/cdrom1 udf,iso9660 user, noauto 0 0 /dev/fd0/media/floppy0 autorw, user, noauto 0 0 Here's the pertinent hardware: *-cdrom:0 description: DVD reader product: RW/DVD GCC-4520B vendor: HL-DT-ST physical id: 2 bus info: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:0.0.0 logical name: /dev/scd0 logical name: /dev/sr0 version: 1.00 capabilities: removable audio cd-r cd-rw dvd configuration: ansiversion=5 *-disc physical id: 0 logical name: /dev/scd0 *-cdrom:1 description: DVD-RAM writer product: DVD-RAM GSA-H22L vendor: HL-DT-ST physical id: 3 bus info: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:0.1.0 logical name: /dev/cdrom logical name: /dev/dvd logical name: /dev/scd1 logical name: /dev/sr1 version: 1.00 serial: [HL-DT-STDVD-RAM GSA-H22L1.0006/08/05 capabilities: removable audio cd-r cd-rw dvd dvd-r dvd-ram configuration: ansiversion=5 *-disc physical id: 0 logical name: /dev/cdrom Here's the output from dmesg | grep CD: [ 23.426388] scsi 1:0:0:0: CD-ROMHL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4520B 1.00 PQ: 0 ANSI: 5 [ 23.428686] scsi 1:0:1:0: CD-ROMHL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GSA-H22L 1.00 PQ: 0 ANSI: 5 [ 23.726248] Uniform CD-ROM driver Revision: 3.20 [ 23.726347] sr 1:0:0:0: Attached scsi CD-ROM sr0 [ 23.734164] sr 1:0:1:0: Attached scsi CD-ROM sr1 [16245.023107] sr1: CDROM not ready. [Bug 63544] Re: Volume control key controls speaker not headphones
To be more specific: PCM controls program output... The best way I can think to describe it is what Wave would be in Windows. It does not control everything, but likely everything that your programs output. If, for instance, you are using MIDI, it will not have an impact if the MIDI has its own control. Microphones, Line-In, etc. all have their own controls and will not be controlled by PCM volume. Master relates to speaker output only. Headphones relates to the headphone output only. Master is a bit misleading and it took me a while to figure it out. I personally think this is a great setup because it allows for more control over things. However, what you CAN do if you would like to have better control over your sound is in System-Preferences-Sound. Highlight Master, hold down CTRL and click on Headphone and have the buttons control BOTH of those which will give you true control over the sound levels you want. I was actually having the same problem until I stumbled upon this thread. The info here was able to help me achieve my ultimate goal and I figured I'd share the info. The reason PCM doesn't suffice for me is because if I I plug my bass into my line-in for instance, the volume keys would have no impact on it. Actually, I have my desktop chained into my laptop for sound. My line-in always has my desktop connected to it. Even if I lower or mute PCM, the desktop will come through loud and clear unless I do something to my Mic or Line-In [don't remember which is which.] Anyway I hope this helps. -- Volume control key controls speaker not headphones https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/63544 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 120669] No player can play screencasts recorded with Istanbul
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: istanbul Hi, I recently updated Istanbul and was pleased, that the bug which made Istanbul hang on recording of full screen in 1280x800 (wide screen laptop) was gone. But then it appeared, that, though I can record such screencasts, all players I have (Totem, MPlayer, Helix) refuse to play the video file I have saved. It seems strange, because when i finish recording the screencast, I can view it in Istanbul's 'Save Screencast' dialog, and, after saving it to the desktop (for example by the name movie.ogg), the screencast icon is represented by a frame from the movie, so it looks like 'something' can recognize it after all. But when I try to start it, Totem appears for a while, and then shuts down. Other mentioned players don't even seem to recognize the file as correct Theora movie. This occurs only after I choose Full Size from recording options. Totem doesn't have any problems with full screen movie recorded with half width and height. [Bug 120670] Re: Second suspend hangs with password dialog and frozen keyboard
/var/log/kern.log.0 after reboot, after a suspend failed with displaying a password dialog, and with a frozen keyboard. I was going to send along the kern.log.0 after hibernate failed for me a couple of days later. But the two kern.log.0 files are identical, both wrt. to size and timestamp, and according to diff. So I'm sending just the one. [Bug 96651] Re: Default Java in KUbuntu needs Gtk support
Very good decision to include Sun's JRE. Hopefully the next generation Consumer JRE which Sun promises to provide rather soon for windows will be available for (K)Ubuntu too, but even if not, it will still be a BIG improvement to include the last version of Sun's JRE instead of the GNU one (the difference between GNU's last version (1.4) and Sun's (1.6) is huge in both performance and functionality, IMHO that's one of (many but important) reasons why people adopt python and perl on Linux rather than Java ). -- Default Java in KUbuntu needs Gtk support https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/96651 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 120669] Re: No player can play screencasts recorded with Istanbul
I record screencasts with other applications (not istanbul), and sometimes the high resolution (1024x768 and above) ones don't play on some machines. I believe this is down to a problem with the video memory/driver rather than istanbul itself. This is confirmed by the fact that you have tried multiple players - totem uses the gstreamer backend by default and mplayer doesn't. So I'd say that rules out totem and mplayer, the fact that I get the same with other non-gstreamer-based screen recorders says it's not the recorder either. Can you confirm what video chipset you have? You have been subscribed to a public bug: In the Kubuntu system settings module, component standard programs, selection Webbrowser. [Bug 74454] Re: [network-admin] net-mgr doesn't remember location
I did a bit more investigation of the problem to see if it could be patched. /etc/resolv.conf appears to be the definitive place where the network settings are stored. This file starts with: # generated by NetworkManager, do not edit! I checked the source of gnome-system-tools with: grep -R NetworkManager * and found no instances, so I guess the file must be written by another component, such as dhcp. This is true even when network-admin is used to change the settings. Clearly more investigation is required, but I thought I'd mention this in case anyone else is thinking of developing a patch. (I have found a very satisfactory application-specific workaround, so my motivation is waning.) -- [network-admin] net-mgr doesn't remember location https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/74454 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
