2007-08-04 Thread Maximillion
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Already before I installed Beryl my workspaces in the taskbar had the

[Bug 130311] Merge erlang 11.b.5dfsg (universe) from Debian (unstable)

2007-08-04 Thread Michele Angrisano
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: erlang

erlang (1:11.b.5dfsg-2ubuntu1) gutsy; urgency=low

  * Merge from Debian unstable, remaining changes:
- debian/rules: Add -fno-stack-protector to fix broken crypto_drv.
- Update maintainer field in debian/control.

Debian changelog (since 1:11.b.5dfsg-1ubuntu1):
erlang (1:11.b.5dfsg-2) unstable; urgency=low

  [ Sergei Golovan ]
  * Linked openssl libraries dynamically instead of new default static linking
which causes difficulties with security updates.

[Bug 68720] Re: Kernel panic with live CD on Thinkpad 600e

2007-08-04 Thread jacek55
Hi,

I have the same problem with thinkpad 600X with 192M of memory.

My whole context is
   thinkpad 600X
   thinkpad T30
   ubuntu i386 7.04 Desktop
   kubuntu i386 7.04 Desktop
   mandriva 2007.1 One Free KDE

I can install three CD on T30
I can install mandriva on both laptops

Launch of kubuntu stops just after
   loading initrd.gz .
   (clear screen)
   invalid compressed format (err=2)
   -- System halted

Launch of ubuntu goes more and says :
   ...
[44 ...174] RAMDISK: Compressed image found at block 0
   [45 ] invalid compressed format (err=1)
VFS: Cannot open root device NULL or
Please append a correct root= boot option
[45 ...190] Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on
unknown-block(104,1)
   [45 ...282]

(note : the laptop having a faulty screen I cannot give the numbers at
head of messages :-( )

There are a difference at launch between mandriva and ubuntu.

ubuntu on 600X gives messages :

  [43 ...202] EISA: Probing bus 0 at eisa.0
[43 ...284] Cannot allocate resource for EISA slot 1
[43 ...367] Cannot allocate resource for EISA slot 4 (note : there aren't
slots 2 and 3)
  [43 ...457] EISA: Detected 0 cards.

dmesg on T30 with ubuntu gives :

  [ 29.630209] NET: Registered protocol family 16
  [ 29.630344] EISA bus registered
[ 29.630351] ACPI: bus type pci registered

  [ 30.887450] EISA: Probing bus 0 at eisa.0
[ 30.887460] Cannot allocate resource for EISA slot 1
[ 30.887464] Cannot allocate resource for EISA slot 2
[ 30.887467] Cannot allocate resource for EISA slot 3
[ 30.887470] Cannot allocate resource for EISA slot 4
[ 30.887473] Cannot allocate resource for EISA slot 5
[ 30.887475] Cannot allocate resource for EISA slot 6
[ 30.887478] Cannot allocate resource for EISA slot 7
[ 30.887481] Cannot allocate resource for EISA slot 8
  [ 30.887483] EISA: Detected 0 cards.
  ...

There are no EISA messages at mandriva's launch

Is it possible to launch (k)ubuntu without EISA probing ?

Thanks for your attention

Jacek

[Bug 130313] Oracle 10g express client or server installation

Public bug reported:

The Oracle 10g express client, which is a *.deb file, can be downloaded
from :

http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/database/xe/htdocs/102xelinsoft.html

The client or server can be installed with no error. But when I tried to
run SQL command line got the bug in the file

/usr/lib/oracle/xe/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/client/bin/nls_lang.sh . In
the two lines 106 and 108 you will see this

if [[ -n $LC_ALL ]]; then
  locale=$LC_ALL
elif [[ -n $LANG ]]; then

you changed the double braces into single braces. And then it was
running.

This is for the first time I am reporting a bug. so please forgive me

[Bug 128292] Re: fuse 2.7.0 needed to fix issues with ntfs-3g and uuids in fstab

2007-08-04 Thread Colin Watson
fuse (2.7.0-1ubuntu1) gutsy; urgency=low

  * Resynchronise with Debian (LP: #128292). Remaining changes:
- Don't install the init script; install the udev rule and the module
  configuration file instead.
- debian/45-fuse.rules: set /dev/fuse group to fuse.
- debian/fuse-utils.modprobe: module configuration file that mounts the
control filesystem when fuse is loaded and unmounts it when fuse is
unloaded, along with checking that the control FS is mounting before
  unmounting it.
- debian/fuse-utils.install: add the udev rule, the module configuration
  file, and ulockmgr_server.
- Load fuse on install, and set it so it gets loaded on reboot.
- Move fusermount and ulockmgr_server to /bin and associated libraries
  to /lib.
  * Use dpkg-query to fetch conffile md5sums rather than parsing
/var/lib/dpkg/status directly.

fuse (2.7.0-1) unstable; urgency=low

  * New upstream release:
- Build against 2.6.22 linux kernel (Closes: #434327).
  * Build depends on libselinux1-dev | libselinux-dev, libfuse-dev depends on
it too (Closes: #434225).
  * Umount all fuse mouted filesystems before unloading kernel module (Closes:
#411143), thanks to Javier Merino for his patch.
  * Improve NEWS.Debian (Closes: #433927), thanks to Tomas Pospisek for fixing
my crap english.
  * Capitalize 'Linux' in long description (Closes: #434109).
  * Drop 002-Allow_standalone_examples_build and 003-Typo_in_fuse.h_comments,
fixed upstream.
  * Drop 001-Fix_bashism_in_mount.fuse, mount.fuse is not a bash script anymore.

fuse (2.6.5-3) unstable; urgency=low

  * Fix typo in fuse-source package.

fuse (2.6.5-2) unstable; urgency=low

  * The 'RE-INTRODUCE FUSE-SOURCE' release.
- Build fuse-source package again (Closes: #414499).
  * Fix bashism in mount.fuse (Closes: #424435).
  * Improve example Makefile.
  * Fixe typo in fuse.h comments (Closes: #424871).
  * Remove 'doc' directory of 2.6.5-1 fuse-utils package (replaced by
symlink) (Closes: #429424).
  * Install sample fuse.conf in /etc (Closes: #429666).
  * Update debian/watch.

[Bug 120347] Re: xorg hang after longer (12h) idle time

2007-08-04 Thread freerick
I'm running Kubuntu Feisty and I have an nvidia geforce 6200. I
encounter the exact same problem: after leaving the computer running
over night, I come back and xorg is at 100% (on one of my CPUs) and the
window decorations have disappeared. Since I have a dual CPU system, my
guess is that it is more tolerant towards this, so although X is
completely frozen (only the mouse moves), I can ctrl+alt+F1 to a console
and take down the system cleanly. (however, if I switch back to the X
server before rebooting, the window decorations are gone)

After a reboot everything is fine. I also ran strace on xorg when it
goes berserk, but the only thing that was noteworthy that I came up with
was also the SIGALRT message. Comparing it to an strace of xorg in
normal conditions (when it's not going berserk), however, revealed that
the SIGALRT message also comes up during normal operation, and neither
that nor any other calls that xorg makes while it's berserk indicate
anything out of the ordinary.

Further, I have taken advantage of the dual CPUs to examine all logs in detail
as the problem occurs: nothing out of the ordinary, in fact, since the system
has been sitting idle, hardly any activity is logged. I checked the KDE
settings and they are showing the screen saver to be off. I do have
kpowermanager installed (because I had a problem where my network card would
stop working after a while otherwise), but it's set to Performance and the
screen saver, auto-suspend for the screen, and in fact all other power-saving
options are unchecked. My screens do turn blank, however, after a period of
inactivity, so it's possible that this is related.
On a side note, I have three monitors on two nvidia cards, running on xinerama
with the 9755 nvidia binary drivers. All signs point to this not being a driver
problem, however, unless nvidia and intel use some of the same libraries in
their drivers.

I also wanted to point out that I usually don't lock my screen when I
leave, so that might not be relevant to this particular problem.

In addition, my GLX does not work for some reason. Whenever I try to run a
glx-enabled app, the app crashes, although it is installed, because the glxinfo
command outputs a grid with the glx info.
Rolf, please let me know the status of your GLX (try running a GLX screensaver
and see what happens), as well as any power management software (such as
kpowersave) that you may have running on your system. Also, do you have a
screen save enabled and do your screens go into auto-suspend mode after a
period of inactivity?

This is a really tricky problem and I really have to find a solution
because it's starting to happen even after shorter periods of
inactivity. The intervals are seemingly random, making the problem
virtually impossible to reproduce and difficult to troubleshoot, but
usually the problem happens after long periods of idle time (although it
has occurred after only a few minutes of idle time), and every time it
happens my workflow is interrupted, so it's really starting to bother
me. It's also embarrassing if you're about to show someone (i.e. a
client) something on your computer and it's completely frozen. If we put
our notes together, we will probably be able to resolve the problem a
lot quicker.

[Bug 108057] Re: Romanian keyboard layout has incorrect characters

2007-08-04 Thread Mihai Capotă
Academic.
It is the primary layout in the Romanian standard SR 13392:2004 and it matches
the key labels on Romanian keyboards.

** Description changed:

  Description of problem:
The Romanian letters Ș and Ț are incorrectly represented when the Romanian
keyboard is selected. Ș and Ț are both incorrectly represented using cedillas
instead of commas.
- The incorrect Unicode characters are Ş - U015E (S with a cedilla), ş - U015F
(s with a cedilla), Ţ - U0162 (T with a cedilla) şi ţ - U0163 (t with a cedilla)
- The correct Unicode characters are Ș - U0218 (S with a comma), ș - U0219 (s
with a comma), Ț - U021A (T with a comma) şi ț - U021B (t with a comma)
+ The incorrect Unicode characters are Ş - U015E (S with a cedilla), ş - U015F

The rules relating to the the Romanian language are dictated by the Academia
Română, and they have provided specific advice regarding the representation of
Romanian characters:

+ For more precise information as to the why the cedillas are incorrect:
  http://www.secarica.ro/html/s-uri_si_t-uri.html (in Romanian):

  Steps to reproduce:
  1. Download and burn Ubuntu, either 6.10 or 7.04.
  2. Boot any PC using the CD.
  3. When the OS has loaded, select System Preferences Keyboard
  4. Select Layouts
  5. Click on Add
  6. Select Romania Standard, then Ok
  7. Select Romania Standard, and move it to the top of the list.
  8. Close
  9. Select Applications Accessories Text Editor
  10. Using a British keyboard(physical keyboard), press the keys marked ; and

[Bug 104481] Re: [feisty beta] Xorg server up to 95% of CPU

2007-08-04 Thread freerick
it shouldn't be this high though. IF the CPU maxes out like that, it
usually indicates a problem of some sort. Try starting firefox from the
command line with the --no-sync option and see what happens. You may
also want to check to see if you have the right binary for your
architecture (i.e. if you're on x86_64, get the corresponding binary).
Better yet, compile firefox yourself leaving out anything you don't
need.

[Bug 108057] Re: Romanian keyboard layout has incorrect characters

2007-08-04 Thread Lucian Adrian Grijincu
comma == academic
cedilla !=  academic

I'd say comma==academic is better. As I pointed out, Windows has updated it's
fonts to support these characters. So displaying these characters on XP, Vista,
OS X and Linux will not create problems.
More over, some of the Romanian translations in Launchpad contain cedilla based
diacritics instead of the correct comma based ones. I think the number of such
errors can be reduced if the default layout produces the correct characters.
Many computer users that do use diacritics in writing do not even know about
this issue (comma vs. cedilla) (I know many very computer literate
(professors, university assistants, C.S. students, etc.) that had/still have no
idea about it.)

I am talking about the layouts. Both of these provide the comma t and s instead

MihaI:

while it may match romanian keyboards, those are vastly outnumbered by us style

[Bug 103603] Re: X server at 100% CPU

2007-08-04 Thread freerick
This appears to be identical to bug 120347.

Zoltan, please let me know the status of your GLX (try running a GLX
screensaver and see what happens), as well as any power management software
(such as kpowersave) that you may have running on your system. Also, do you
have a screen save enabled and do your screens go into auto-suspend mode after
a period of inactivity?

[Bug 109917] Re: [apport] package netatalk failed to install/upgrade:

2007-08-04 Thread Ante Karamatić
@czil

You have misconfigured system. Your hostname is 'earl66', but you
/etc/hosts doesn't contain information about it. It should have
something like this:

127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
127.0.1.1 earl66.localdomain earl66

When you fix your /etc/hosts, installing netatalk, if eth0 is wired
network, will succeed.

So, czil, you don't suffer from netatalk bug, but misconfigured system.

@pirulo, Peter

Are you maybe trying to run netatalk over wireless network? Most of the
wireless devices don't support Appletalk. Appletalk doesn't work on my
Intel Pro Wireless 3945, but it does on wired network card - Intel
Ethernet Express.

[Bug 98668] Re: when I close laptop lid, xorg takes 100% and never recovers

2007-08-04 Thread freerick
I think this might be the same as bug 120347.
In both cases, X takes up 100% CPU after the screen turns blank. The difference
is that in this scenario here, the screen turns blank because the lid of the
laptop is closed. Both situations are related to the power state of the screen
changing (or about to be changed) and X subsequently going berserk, with the
only way to recover being logging onto a console and killing X manually.

[Bug 117745] Re: powertop suggests to remove g-p-m

2007-08-04 Thread Richard Hughes
It is useless to make a software to save power if it does not save

It does save power. The real problem was that DPMS does not give async
events on chance, therefor we had to poll. Now the X guys are using
xrandr for per-head DPMS we can do this without polling at all. Update
g-p-m and watch the recommendation go away.

[Bug 130318] new version of midnight commander is completely broken

2007-08-04 Thread Robert Persson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mc

I've just installed the latest update to midnight commander and it's
completely broken. When I call it from the command line absolutely
nothing happens until I hit control-c; htop shows nothing, there is no
disk activity and ps doesn't show anything when I run it a couple of
seconds later.

I know this is not completely on-topic, but this is the third time in
the last few weeks that major breakages have been distributed from the
ubuntu repositories: First there was the disappearance of the flash
player binary. Then there was the dependency error that would have
caused firefox to be uninstalled if I wasn't in the habit of vetting my
package updates. And now this: a program I depend on and use all the
time has completely stopped working. In other words there is a meta-bug
at work here, and one that desperately needs to be sorted out if ubuntu
bug #1 is to be fixed.

[Bug 108057] Re: Romanian keyboard layout has incorrect characters

2007-08-04 Thread Mihai Capotă
We should remove the layouts with cedillas from the graphical configuration
utilities. Advanced users that want to use those layouts can set them using
setxkbmap. This is the situation now, only reversed, the comma layouts are
hidden.
Regarding academic vs. comma, I strongly believe we should follow the
standards. SR 13392:2004 defines academic as primary standard. Moreover, the
de facto standard (i.e. on Windows Vista) is also academic. I understand that
programmers might be better served by the comma layout, but academic is
much better suited for the general public.

[Bug 108057] Re: Romanian keyboard layout has incorrect characters

2007-08-04 Thread Lucian Adrian Grijincu
** Description changed:

  Description of problem:
The Romanian letters Ș and Ț are incorrectly represented when the Romanian
keyboard is selected. Ș and Ț are both incorrectly represented using cedillas
instead of commas.
- The incorrect Unicode characters are Ş - U015E (S with a cedilla), ş - U015F
(s with a cedilla), Ţ - U0162 (T with a cedilla) and ţ - U0163 (t with a
cedilla)
- The correct Unicode characters are Ș - U0218 (S with a comma), ș - U0219 (s
with a comma), Ț - U021A (T with a comma) and ț - U021B (t with a comma)
+ The incorrect Unicode characters are:
+ Ş - U015E (S with a cedilla), ş - U015F (s with a cedilla),
+ Ţ - U0162 (T with a cedilla), ţ - U0163 (t with a cedilla).
+ The correct Unicode characters are:
+ Ș - U0218 (S with a comma), ș - U0219 (s with a comma),
+ Ț - U021A (T with a comma), ț - U021B (t with a comma).

The rules relating to the the Romanian language are dictated by the Academia
Română, and they have provided specific advice regarding the representation of
Romanian characters:
  http://www.secarica.ro/InstitLingvTastatura-20031008.pdf (in Romanian)

For more precise information as to the why the cedillas are incorrect:
  http://www.secarica.ro/html/s-uri_si_t-uri.html (in Romanian):

  Steps to reproduce:
  1. Download and burn Ubuntu, either 6.10 or 7.04.
  2. Boot any PC using the CD.
  3. When the OS has loaded, select System Preferences Keyboard
  4. Select Layouts
  5. Click on Add
  6. Select Romania Standard, then Ok
  7. Select Romania Standard, and move it to the top of the list.
  8. Close
  9. Select Applications Accessories Text Editor
  10. Using a British keyboard(physical keyboard), press the keys marked ; and
' (both are just to the right hand side of the letter L)

  Actual results:
ş and ţ appear with cedillas.

  Expected results:
ș and ț to appear with commas.

  Notes:
The Romanian keyboard layout on Mac OS X 10.4.9 works as expected, as does
Windows Vista. Windows XP and below are broken like Ubuntu (and most likely
other distros too).

[Bug 87063] Re: [needs-packaging] Please package php5-mssql

2007-08-04 Thread A.B.
I just want to add my voice to the need to package the MSSQL extension.
I think it would help Ubuntu to break into the server market (Ubuntu
specifically, not Linux). I have a very big client that uses MSSQL and
has no intention of changing to any other database system in the
foreseeable future. The system administrators were very open to setting
Linux PHP application servers and they specifically asked about Ubuntu
and because they heard good things about it. However having to compile
extensions for it is not an option for them. Having spend a couple of
days figuring out how to compile it myself I have to agree. So come
deployment time, if the extension isn't there in the repo they'll have
to look elsewhere.

[Bug 117651] Re: ubuntu randomly freezes

2007-08-04 Thread freerick
I have the exact same problem with X taking 100% CPU after sitting idle for a
while.
If this is the case for you, then you are most likely experiencing bug 109507
and bug 120347.
