[Bug 140854] Re: Boot with Software Raid most times causes mdadm to not complete (possible race)

2007-09-21 Thread luthos
I have exactly the same problem.

My setup:

  Xubuntu Gutsy with latest Updates
  Athlon 64 1,6 MHz, 1GB RAM
  /dev/md0 is a Raid5 with 3x250GB disks (2x SATA and 1 PATA)

I'm not too experienced with Linux, the only idea I came up with was
disabling the Splashscreen with the status bar to see what's going on.
It loads some hardware drivers I think and then it's the same as
netslayer described, its printing md: array md0 already has disks!
over and over again.

I always have to try several times until the system boots but if it
finally does everything is working fine, even the raid.

[Bug 141425] mpd fails to start if music_directory is on NFS

2007-09-21 Thread Paul Kishimoto
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mpd

In /etc/mpd.conf, music_directory is, by default, /var/lib/mpd/music

I have /var/lib/mpd/music symlinked to a NFS folder. However, since mpd
is before mountall.sh in the rc*.d directories (30 vs. 35), mpd fails to
start because the NFS share is not mounted.

I fixed this by running:
 sudo update-rc.d -f mpd remove
 sudo update-rc.d mpd start 40 2 3 4 5 . stop 0 1 6 .
... but it would be nice if the package was corrected so I didn't have to do
this.

[Bug 141416] Re: Gutsy LiveCD (Tribe 5) fails on Dell Inspiron 1501

2007-09-21 Thread andrewsomething
I'm also using a Dell Inspiron 1501 (AMD Turion 64x2) and have gotten
the same problem.

X seems to load fine, a brown screen appears, and then it waits.
Occasionally, it will drop out to a black screen and flash some errors
before repeating the process again. I'll try to reproduce and write the
errors down by hand, but they flash by quickly.

There are three lines of SQUASHFS Errors and a mention of Exporter.pm
did not return a true value (I wasn't able to get the path followed).

I'll try to get the rest of the error output. Let me know if there is
anything else I could do to help pin this down.

[Bug 141424] Re: WPA Driver?

2007-09-21 Thread Saïvann Carignan
This bug has been made one of the priorities for the next Ubuntu release
( Gutsy Gibbon 7.10 ). Because it's a new functionnality, it will not be
added natively to your Ubuntu version but you'll be easily able to
upgrade Ubuntu 7.10 once it's released in final stable version ( October
18th ).

From now on, you can look for tutorial in your language on Internet and
I'm sure that you'll find solutions somewhere. I don't know wifi-radar
but you can also try kwifimanager which is a pretty good one.

You can find help in LocoTeams of your language here :

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LoCoTeamList

You can also install Xchat-gnome and join #ubuntu to speak with people
that maybe will be want to give you some help.

If you need to contact me, please use my email [EMAIL PROTECTED] better
than this bug report.

Thanks for your bug report. Feel free to report any further bugs which
you find.

I'll add that the Lenovo 3000 V100 notebooks also have this chip. I too
had to compile from SVN (with 2.6.22) to get wireless working on it. It
would be nice to have this compiled into the Ubuntu kernels so it just

[Bug 141430] Other OSes added to GRUB menu even when GRUB installed to partition (not MBR)

2007-09-21 Thread Tim Hull
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

In Ubuntu Feisty and Gutsy, if one chooses Advanced options at the end
of the install and specifies a partition to install GRUB in (instead of
the MBR), GRUB still adds choices for all of the other OSes on the
system. This makes little sense, as the primary reason for installing
GRUB to a partition (instead of the MBR) is because one is using another
bootloader (such as rEFIt in the case of my MacBook).

As I am prompted to pick between all of these options on every boot,
this can be quite annoying when I just want to install/use pre-release
versions of Ubuntu in a separate partition. Please change this for
Gutsy such that other OSes do NOT get added to the boot menu when GRUB
is installed to a partition.

[Bug 141429] kde guidance power manager crash

2007-09-21 Thread Michael Gliwinski
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kde-guidance

uname -a: Linux hk-47 2.6.22-11-generic #1 SMP Mon Sep 17 03:18:44 GMT 2007
x86_64 GNU/Linux
os rel: Gutsy Tribe5 + updates

KDE Power Manager isn't the only app that crashes. This is actually
caused by a bug in either python-qt3 or the qt library itself. When
importing qt lib in python it gets killed with SIGBUS. I already logged
that separately in bug #140053

Other apps affected are restricted-manager and kcminit.

I can provide more details or do some more debugging if needed.

[Bug 141435] Cannot start from dmraid device anymore

2007-09-21 Thread jens7677
Public bug reported:

Since one of the last (kernel ) updates I cannot start my Gutsy anymore.
The message I got is:

device-mapper: ioctl: 4.11.0-ioctl (2006-10-12) initialised: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
ERROR: isw device for volume Volume0 broken on /dev/sdb in RAID set
isw_dfgjhjfjai_Volume0
ERROR: isw: wrong # of devices in RAID set isw_dfgjhjfjai_Volume0 [1/2] on
/dev/sdb
device-mapper: table: 254:0: linear: dm-linear: Device lookup failed
device-mapper: ioctl: error adding target to table

and later the consequences
ALERT! /dev/dm-1 does not exists. Dropping to a shell!

(I even have to do a cold restart, otherwise my Raid Setup appears
broken during POST)

I have a fakeraid (dmraid) setup as described here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=464758 and the whole system is
up-to-date by now.

It seems like this one is somehow related to:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evms/+bug/115616
But I'm not sure since I haven't installed evms nor lvm.

The raid itself is ok, Win Vista and XP on the same disk works fine and
I cant mount the linux partition from the tribe 4 cd (like described in
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=464758)

Any help is welcome, I really don't know what to do. Removing dmraid is
no option...

Regards,
Jens

information.

[Bug 141432] failing to start compiz switches window manager

2007-09-21 Thread Jussi Kukkonen
Public bug reported:

I do not have compiz installed (hardware not capable of fancy stuff like that),
but was still testing the new Appearance Settings. Selecting normal or extra
effects on the desktop effects tab results in the following:
 * Dialog Failed to execute child process compiz (No such file or directory)
 * After clicking ok, metacity gets started (metacity --replace).

The dialog is ok, but starting metacity was unexpected: First, my
original WM was still running fine (as compiz had not been started).
Second, I run openbox so I would have assumed that any WM restarts would
start openbox, not metacity.

[Bug 141161] Re: [regression] after recent upgrade to 6.7.192-4ubuntu1 dual-head support is broken

2007-09-21 Thread Herbert V. Riedel

I'm still trying to get more information regarding #1 and #2, especially since
they don't seem to occur deterministically

regarding #3, I can workaround it by enabling option SWCursor; but that
causes nasty square artifacts around the pointer;
afaik, using VESA is not an option on powerbooks, but I've attached the lspci
-vvnn output for the mean time

btw, while playing around with radeon options I found out that using
 Option DepthBits 16
in combination with a screen depth of 24 is a bad idea... it causes major
disturbances on the whole display as soon as I start glxgears... ;-)

as for the MacModel fix, in case you are referring to

[Bug 141436] iptables is missing the statistic and other modules

2007-09-21 Thread tuxinvader
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: iptables

The version of iptables in Ubuntu (up to and including 7.10) seems to be
missing some modules and extensions.

I specifically require the statistic module, which is included in Debian
Etch (1.3.6.0debian1-5), but not in Gutsy (1.3.6.0debian1-5ubuntu5).

Could you explain the reasons for leaving out these modules please? I'm
sure other people writing complex firewall rules would also like to see
these included in the Ubuntu distribution.

You can compare what Debian provide here:
http://packages.debian.org/etch/iptables/i386/filelist
with Gutsy here:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/cgi-bin/search_contents.pl?searchmode=filelistword=iptablesversion=gutsyarch=i386

Thanks,

[Bug 139313] Re: nvidia dual head twinview (pseudo-xinerama): gnome-panel and maximized windows span both heads on first login

2007-09-21 Thread Charles
Hi,

I can confirm the same behavior. I have another scenario where the gnome-panel
and the maximized windows span both head of the dual head setup.
When my notebook is undocked, the display is set to single display (1440x900).
After docking my notebook, opening nvidia-settings and enable the second
monitor, the second display is enabled with correct settings, except that
gnome-panel is spanned across the two screens. It seems that the window-manager
doesn't detect the change.

[Bug 129172] Re: kernel performance is *very* slow with 8GB RAM on AMD64. 6GB is fine. kernel 2.6.22-8 x86_64

2007-09-21 Thread Grzegorz \McCartney\ Oledzki
Flashing the BIOS has helped (luckily Gigabyte provide a DOS flashing
utility) and now booting with 8GB system memory installed, and no mem=
parameters, makes the system behave correctly. So I would consider that
bug not a kernel bug, but a hardware issue indeed.

[Bug 141416] Re: Gutsy LiveCD (Tribe 5) fails on Dell Inspiron 1501

2007-09-21 Thread andrewsomething
Well, after multiple reboots from the Gutsy Tribe 5 live CD I am
experiencing the same issue each time except that the error output has
not been reproduced. So I'm not sure if it was related or not.

I then attempted using the daily build (found here:
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/20070921/) to see if there was any
difference. Running the daily build, I get all the way to the GDM login,
but then after logging in the same behavior occurs. It just hangs on the
brown screen.

Again, if there is any thing I can do to help debug this, let me know.

[Bug 119672] Re: Gutsy Gibbon and FN keys on Sony Vaio

2007-09-21 Thread André Barmasse
Ohhh, crap! My joy was spread a little bit too early. It seens that the
slider for dimming the brightness on my Sony Vaio VGN-FS195VP only
worked just after the update. After rebooting my machine I was - once
again - not able to dim the brightness within gnome-power-manager

I blacklisted the sonypi module, but that doesn't seem to do the trick.
Are the modules sonypi and sony-laptop (both are loaded during startup)
disturbing each other or lies the problem deeper in the dbus and hal

[Bug 127101] Re: laptop hangs when switching video mode

2007-09-21 Thread Sitsofe Wheeler
Brian has hit the nail on the head with this one. As I am pressed for
time I will only briefly outline some steps that eventually (after a few
minutes) seem to result in this bug:

Run the following two scripts in separate terminals as a regular user:
while true; do totem /usr/share/example-content/Experience\ ubuntu.ogg; done
while true; do sleep 10; killall totem; done;

Run the following script in a root terminal (i.e. one you have sudo'd to root
in):
while true; do chvt 2; sleep 3; chvt 7; sleep 3; done

Now a variety of things will happen:
1. You may get the infamous flashing grey block lockup
2. You may find you VT consoles go funny colours but you can still switch back
to X and X appears to be fine.
3. You may find that totem suddenly refuses to play videos and looking in dmesg
shows something similar to the following:
no MTRR for d040,20 found
mtrr: no more MTRRs available

It's a pity that these two clients are not compatible in the way of

Same problem in my upgrade on 2007-09-20. Solved by uninstalling evms,
so I am pretty sure it is a duplicate of #115616.

[Bug 121096] Re: request for nvidia 100 series driver in restricted-modules

2007-09-21 Thread slamdunk
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 120943 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/120943

I dont' know if it's a real support request. I just know that it's a
hell for me!

With every new kernel upgrade with nvidia I need to start:

# killall -9 gdm Xorg
# modprobe -r nvidia
# modprobe nvidia_new
# gdm

I do everything (nvidia-xconfig etc.) but the top is:

# nvidia-glx-config enable

where a jerk:

Section Device
Identifier ATI Technologies Inc Radeon RV100 QY [Radeon 7000/VE]
Driver nvidia
BusID PCI:0:5:0
EndSection

I didn't know about ATI-Nvidia fusion company (ok it's just an
identifier...)

for desperation I have installed all 2.6.22-11 packages and removed all
2.6.22-10 packages but manual launch is required everytime... probably
with next upgrades this will work until upgrade from 2.6.22-11 to
2.6.22-12...

Sorry for this vent but I hate lose two hours at work to get a working
system...

[Bug 41994] Re: closed Laptop Lid to reliably keep Backlight off

2007-09-21 Thread mackkie
I'm not sure if it'll have any ill effects, but my problem went away by
commenting out all lines in the
/etc/acpi/events/videobtn file and then rstarting acpid. I assume this causes
the acpid to ignore the
event that is triggering the backlight to come back on when the lid is still
closed.

The backlight now stays off unless the lid is opened or an actual button
is pressed.

I have found the following upstream bugs, that seem related. In the
reports some fix is suggested (e.g. _enabling_ math preview, or cutting
and pasting text if the problem is in second window opened), does some
of these workarounds solve your problem? In a comment in the second
report there is also a patch for testing, and a link to a binary
release with the patch.
