Solution suggestions:
1. Install xfs and xfonts-base, start xfs afterwards
2. Edit /etc/vnc.conf and add the line '$fontPath = unix/:7100'
This is a problem on nearly most linux distributions I have seen. I do

and get the display on the actual laptop to work. NOTE: The other
1024x768 mode didn't change anything. If someone can tell me what to do

OK, while investigating into this I found that there's in fact an
(undocumented) configuration option quiet which can be used to make
apt-listchanges do what I want if I put quiet=2 in
/etc/apt/listchanges.conf. But I'm not sure if this option was ever
meant to be used that way, and it isn't
I just updated to kernel version 2.6.22-12.36-generic (boot from lice cd
and chroot into my dmraid partition), but nothing changes during the
next real startup :(

OK, for some reason this now works just fine for me. I still have the
same drive (PX716-A) and was running feisty around the time it went
away. Unfortunately I noticed it way too late to know for sure what has
fixed it. It might just be due to one of the firmware updates I did
(it's at 1.11 now).
Further into the installer, after mounting the drive manually, another
more terminal problem crops up which is reported in bug #143963 Gutsy
Alternate fails: Debootstrap Error.
I'm not sure if this one causes that one, or if they are unrelated.

Logged another bug report which relates to this one (bug #141429). In
the first case I've noticed it in restricted-manager-kde, this time I've
noticed it also affects power-manager. Is anybody else able to
reproduce it? Or am I just lucky :D

If you are now using compiz with AIGLX (and disabling XGL) then this isn't
really the right bug to be reporting issues that are arising while you are not
using XGL... Your information definitely looks useful though - perhaps you
should be posting it on one of the forums?
