I can confirm this issue in Gutsy Beta, brought up to date today.
If I try to connect mine laptop, the whole system hangs and the computer
needs a hardreboot.

I installed Gutsy Beta from the Desktop CD and it all worked perfectly.
I have Ubuntu and Windows on this machine and manually edited the grub
menu.lst to put Windows above the automatic Ubuntu section (so that it
booted by default).
Today, I downloaded all the updates since
I've finally solved this in my case: After detecting the second disk,
udev triggers a mdadm --assemble --scan as it should. This failed to
pick up the new disk. Removing num-devices=, level= and uuid= settings
from /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf resolved this problem. My
/etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf now reads:

Ok, I've experienced the problem with compiz disabled too, so nevermind
my post. The true workaround (found thanks to a post at lwn) is to have
gnome-power-manager in your session (which I had removed since I don't
have a laptop).

After unconnecting my MP3-Player from the usb-port and a second try,

I have the same problem. When the disk is removed and another inserted, new
icon shows up, but the previous one stays (but when opened, leads to the new
disk). The second icon disappears after reboot without disk in the drive.
