[Bug 144239] Re: bug wifi rt61 gutsy

2007-10-01 Thread frankO
Hi, I have fixed my problem.
First, I must state that I upgraded from feisty. It was not a new installation.
I deleted the directory .gconf/system/networking from my home directory. This
is what seemed to be causing the problem.
And then make sure the /etc/network/interfaces file has

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

iface wlan0 inet static #using a static address
address 192.168.1.10
netmask 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.1.1
wireless-key s:your password for wep key (ascii)
wireless-essid your network essid name
auto wlan0

You still get the rc80211_simple errors as above in dmesg but the
ra61pci module is still loaded.

[Bug 147737] Re: ata_piix does not get loaded from initrd

2007-10-01 Thread Robert Sander
Hi!

I was able to resolve the issue by lokking at one of my old bugs (bug
#75814).

I have added "blacklist ata_piix" to /etc/modprobe.d/localhost because
with kernel 2.6.20 it delayed booting.

After removing that line and updating the initrd my system is able to
boot gutsy with kernel 2.6.22.

I have the same problem. Same configuration. I think that it comes from
a bad compiz configuration that puts the "panel window" in a lower level
than the "desktop window". So maybe even users that doesn't use ati have
the same problem. So if there's anyone that uses nVidia or Intel cards
with xgl (not aiglx, that may solve the problem), please report. At
least to understand where the problem comes from. Any help is
apreciated.

I was about to file a bug, but will request for a feature now. Wouldn't it be
nice
1). to have a warning during the initial installation of Ubuntu, that suggests
one to choose the size of the partition for /boot (if it is separate) to be not
less then **M;
2). to suggest one to delete old kernel packages using a _package_manager_?

I've lost more then an hour on this issue...

After that it hangs. I was running feisty on it with the latest kernel, and
after doing a dist-upgrade to gutsy, it was loading fine. I uninstalled the
feisty kernel on it and tried to boot the gutsy kernel, and I experienced the
same issue. Let me know if you need more info (more then those few lines, I'll

[Bug 138718] Re: gdm greeter crashes when X is using vesa driver

2007-10-01 Thread Klaus S. Madsen
Hmm... I just took a more through look at the code, and it seems that
the code where gdm crashes should only be executed if XineramaIsActive
returns true. So as far as I can tell, one of three things causes the
problem:

1) XineramaIsActive falsely returns TRUE, even though no Xinerama support is
available.
2) XineramaIsActive fails, but for some reason the ignore_error_handler doesn't
get called, so x_error_occured is still false when we test it.
3) Some sort of compiler error.

Of these three posibilities, I think that 1) is the most likely one.
However why XineramaIsActive should be affected by the refresh rate
range set in xorg.conf, is beyond my imagination.

I'll try to debug it further tonight, if time permits.

[Bug 138718] Re: gdm greeter crashes when X is using vesa driver

2007-10-01 Thread Klaus S. Madsen
I don't know the value of xineramascreen. I'll have to single step the
code, as the value is optimized out at the point where the program
segfaults.

But xscreens is a pointer to a XineramaScreenInfo structure, and the
pointer value is NULL, so screen[0].x_org is also invalid.

[Bug 73211] Re: MonoUralic contains incorrect encoding information

2007-10-01 Thread Arne Goetje
Please note, that the dagger - modified Ka display is because of the
modified CP1251 encoding. In the original CP1251 encoding it is indeed a
dagger symbol. However, the CP1251 version we are dealing with has
replaced some glyphs with Uralic ones.

I have packaged a testing version of MonoUralic.

http://ppa.launchpad.net/arnegoetje/ubuntu/pool/main/t/ttf-uralic/

The package contains only the MonoUralic font in two flavors: one with
the modified CP1251 encoding, the other with the correct ISO10646
encoding.

I'm afraid, because the CP1251 encoding was tempered with, we have no
choice than to provide 2 font flavors, one for each encoding.

So, if this testing package works for you, I'll modify the remaining
fonts accordingly.

Also, I have prepared the same fonts as TTC file (Truetype Collection),
which should save some space on users' systems.

If the above package works for you, I will create a new one with the TTC
file enabled instead. It will need to be tested with as many
applications as possible, weather or not they can use both font flavors
out of the TTC.

Are you willing to test that also?

Otherwise, if the TTC doesn't work as expected, we'll need to ship two
separate fonts, like we have now.

[Bug 147965] Opening Excel spreadsheet crashes OO.org Calc on exit

2007-10-01 Thread Thilo-Alexander Ginkel
Public bug reported:

This bug affects openoffice.org-calc 1:2.3.0-1ubuntu2 running under
Kubuntu 7.10 Beta (amd64).

When opening a certain Excel spreadsheet in Calc the application crashes
upon exit, displays an empty OpenOffice.org document recovery dialog
(i.e., the dialog contains no files to be recovered) and then launches a
new OO.org Writer instance that just contains an empty text document.

The document that triggers this bug is available upon request, but I
cannot just attach it to this report as it contains some private
information.

Unfortunately, no output is being written to the console and I can't
seem to figure out how to generate a crash report that for example
contains a stack trace, etc. Any advice how to do this is appreciated.

[Bug 147963] [Gutsy] HAL won't start

Hal seems to have been "broken" with the most recent updates.

It won't start and is causing other programs (and their dependants) to

This is a rather "grave" situation.

I've mentioned recently in other related bugs but it occurred to me that
there wasn't a recent bug (that I could find) for HAL itself.

[Bug 147962] Palm connection problem (synchronize and as usb storage using CardExport) (Gutsy Beta)

2007-10-01 Thread sancheztavo
Public bug reported:

I have a Palm Tungsten E that connects via an USB cable. I have never
had problems before connecting this device in previous Ubuntu versions
until installed Ubuntu Gutsy Beta.

I can't make it synchronize with gnome-pilot because /dev/pilot does not
exist, and I can't mount this as an usb storage device (for which I use
Softick CardExport) to access to its 512MB SD memory card (it used to be
detected /dev/sda1, and automounted, but this doesn't happen now)

Both actions worked flawlessly in Ubuntu 7.04

output of "lsmod | grep usb" (when trying to synchronize):

usb_storage72896 0
libusual 18192 1 usb_storage
ide_core 116548 4 usb_storage,ide_cd,ide_disk,amd74xx
usbhid 29536 0
hid28928 1 usbhid
scsi_mod 147084 4 sg,sd_mod,usb_storage,libata
usbcore 138248 6 usb_storage,libusual,usbhid,ehci_hcd,ohci_hcd

output of "lsmod | grep usb" (when trying to connect as an USB storage device):
usb_storage72896 1
libusual 18192 1 usb_storage
ide_core 116548 4 usb_storage,ide_cd,ide_disk,amd74xx
usbhid 29536 0

usbcore 138248 6 usb_storage,libusual,usbhid,ehci_hcd,ohci_hcd

I have an usb mouse (Logitech MX500) that works with no problems

I also tried connecting a Fujifilm E550 Camera via usb and it
automounted with no problems.

I'll upload the logs in the next posts

After putting desk top into sleep (suspend) mode the desk top behave as it

than unplugging the console and restart the desktop.

[Bug 88152] Re: [nvidia-glx] Switch user/switch VT causes lockup with compiz/beryl/desktop-effects

2007-10-01 Thread Matthew Vermeulen
Compiz will not be enabled 'out of the box'. However, every user will be
practically walked through the process of installing the appropriate
proprietary drivers by the Restricted Drivers Manager, so it would be
safe to assume (imho) that the average user with an nvidia card will
have compositing enabled...

[Bug 147961] battery monitor shows charge decreasing while laptop is plugged in

2007-10-01 Thread neurophobic
Public bug reported:

[7.10 beta] Applets (as well as /proc/acpi/battery/bat0) that monitor
battery charge show a steady reduction in charge even while the laptop
is plugged in. Once the charge drops to a very low percentage, possibly
0% it spontaneously returns to 100%, once this happens the reduction in
charge stops. It returns once the power cord is unplugged and plugged in
again, the battery life reported steadily decreasing again. It is as
though even the battery really is charging, and the system reports that
it is charging, the estimated charge reduces as though the system were
unplugged.

[Bug 147960] Opening Amarok in Gutsy causes log out

After updating to Gutsy Beta opening Amarok resulted in a log out. I am
completely stumped as to why this is the case. Logout also occurs when
trying to open "Open Arena" with compiz running. I have a sony viao
laptop with dual intel core2 dou processors (1.80 Ghz) and 2.0 GB of
memory and intel965 express graphics card. Since the first logout i have
made changes to the compiz package (possibly cause of "open arena"
logout). I am not sure what else could be contributing to the problem.
hope this helps

[Bug 70007] Re: Password fields appear blank

2007-10-01 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
Yes, reproduced in Ubuntu Gutsy.

** Description changed:

- GnuMail 1.2.0, Ubuntu 6.10
+ Gnumail 1.2.0, Ubuntu 6.10; Gnumail 1.2.0~pre2-1, Ubuntu Gutsy

In the Preferences panel, password fields always appear blank,
regardless of how many characters are in them. When typing in them, the
insertion point moves, but nothing appears. (Perhaps a bullet or
asterisk is actually being inserted, but is white text on a white
  background?)

This might be a problem in whatever GUI library GNUstep uses.

[Bug 147957] root won't mount by UUID, device doesn't exist

2007-10-01 Thread Alex Mauer
Public bug reported:

My system won't boot using the UUID= syntax, because the root partition
doesn't get a /dev/disk/by-uuid link. All the other partitions do:

/dev/disk/by-uuid$ ls -l
total 0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 2007-10-01 17:45 433B49BF -> ../../sda1
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 2007-10-01 17:45 32B88978B8893B7D -> ../../sda4

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 2007-10-01 17:45 a2e4735b-f48b-49d8-8937-3e01da5ea0e9

-> ../../sda5

It does have a UUID though:

$ sudo dumpe2fs /dev/sda6 | head -n 3
dumpe2fs 1.40.2 (12-Jul-2007)
Filesystem volume name: /
Last mounted on:
Filesystem UUID: 2b41b6d0-b2d9-4296-9be7-e2928828eaf0

[Bug 43572] Re: Dell Laptops don't talk to HAL about brightness correctly

2007-10-01 Thread insyzygy
Not sure if the bug report belongs here as the hardware is different but
there seem to be many report of similar bugs so tell me if I should
report somewhere else.

I have a thinkpad x20. Up till now (dapper, edgy, feisty) I could change the
screen brightness by using
fn + home or fn+end. This broke in the upgrade to gutsy. I thought I would try
the brightness applet, and I found that does not work either. When I mouse over
the applet it gives the message

Cannot get laptop panel brightness.

[Bug 147955] Ubuntu 7.10 beta failed to reboot after successful installation on Acer Aspire 5520 G

2007-10-01 Thread Auckland
Public bug reported:

First of all, I couldn't install Ubuntu 7.04 (neither i386 nor amd 64)
"official release" on my new notebook (Acer Aspire 5520 G), thus I tried to
install the beta version of Ubuntu 7.10 i386 (the amd 64 version doesn't work
at all). The live cd was loaded very slowly but I finally managed to install
Ubuntu successfully. I was asked to reboot the system and remove the live cd.
I did as I was told but Ubuntu failed to start. The following error message
appeared on the screen:
"Busy Box V1.1.3 (Debian 1:1.1.3-5 Ubuntu 4) Built-in Shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.
/bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off (initramfs)"

I suspect that it's a hardware compatibility issue i.e PCI bug. I have
noticed a PCI error message while the machine was booting but I couldn't
write it down; the message appeared and vanished within a second!

I'll provide you with the following hardware information:
Acer Aspire 5520 G
AMD Turion 64 Mobile Technology MK-38 (2.2 GHz, 512 KB L2 cache)
Up to 384 MB Nvidia Ge Force 8400M G Turbo Cache
1 GB DDR2
15.4 WXGA Acer Crystal Brite LCD (8ms 1220 nits)
120 GB HDD
DVD-Super Multi double layer
802.11 b/g WLAN

I hope that developers will be able to sort out this hardware
compatibility and software installation issues. I truly wish I could run
Ubuntu 7.10 on my new acer notebook.

Thanks for your co-operation.

[Bug 73004] Re: Dell 2005fpw lcd defaults to 1280x1024 instead of its native resolution of 1680x1050

2007-10-01 Thread nachokb
Tried it in Gutsy Beta (which is older than your patch).

BTW, even though it started in 1280x1024, I had the correct option
already configured, so System > Preferences > Screen Resolution showed
1680x1050 (that is more than acceptable to me, no xorg.conf fiddling
anymore).

I attach ddcprobe's output and a long tail of Xorg.0.log (with video
modes info). Sadly, xresprobe's output was empty (I'm running the driver
chosen by the livecd which is radeon, perhaps I'll try it with fglrx
next time...

[Bug 147589] Re: Miro fails to play films when using default renderer (gstreamer works OK)

2007-10-01 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
While I'd love to enable the gstreamer renderer by default, it's not
going to happen for Gutsy - there's just not enough time to test it.
I'll probably do this for Hardy.

Miro does *not* depend on libxine1-ffmpeg. Many videos should play
without it, and ffmpeg (like almost all decoders) has patent issues
around it, so it's quite reasonable that people may wish to install miro
without libxine1-ffmpeg. The miro packages currently Recommend:
libxine1-ffmpeg, which is the highest level of "you probably want this"
available that isn't a hard dependency.

Can you test if installing libxine1-ffmpeg allows miro to play the
streams you have tested? If it can't, then there's an actual bug here.
If it can, then I'll close this bug.

[Bug 85790] Re: Documentation for pam_unix incorrect for "max=" option

2007-10-01 Thread dAniel hAhler
Fixed for Gutsy.

>From pam's NEWS file (version 0.99.7.1-5ubuntu1, which has just entered Gutsy):
[...]
The password length 'max' option has also been deprecated in this
version because it was never written to work as suggested in the
documentation. If you are using pam_unix but are not using the default
/etc/pam.d/common-password file, you should remove any old max= options
to pam_unix from your config as this option will be considered an error
in future versions of pam.
