Moritz -- I thank you for your time and effort, and I feel very stupid now having reported this as a bug, because I have been shown here: http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?p=8640#8640 That the problem was, I did not have enough Video RAM set up on VirtualBox. It can't possibly be the X server, not right after the bootloader countdown! I've seen the exact same behaviour with a notebook here. Try this: press escape during countdown to access the grub boot menu. Keeping the default kernel selected, press E to enter edit mode, jump on the line starting with kernel and press E again to edit that line. Finally, from the end of the line, remove quiet and splash parameters. Press ENTER and then B to boot. You will boot in text mode and if your situation is like mine, all should start ok. Public bug reported: Test environment: Ubuntu 7.10 + latest updates Date of test: Oct 26 2007 Desktop environment: GNOME ProblemType: Crash Architecture: amd64 ExecutablePath: /usr/sbin/nm-applet Package: network-manager-gnome 0.6.5-0ubuntu10 PackageArchitecture: amd64 I am using a Lenovo T61 laptop and nm-applet crashes pretty consistently when I left-click the icon in system tray and then click 'Connect to Other Wireless Network...'. I compiled a debug version of nm-applet and backtrace showed that it crashed when calling a function in gtk+ library. Then I compiled a debug version of gtk+ libraries and get the backtrace as attached. Another thing to note is that I found there is a 'gtk+2.0-2.12.0/debian/patches' dir in the source package I got by 'apt- get source'. I also compiled another version of gtk+ libraries without applying those additional patches in the 'gtk+2.0-2.12.0/debian/patches' dir and crashes of nm-applet never happen again. Yet another thing to note is that it seems crashes do not happen either when running nm-applet under the contorl of Valgrind. I tried at least 30+ times and did not see any crash. ** Affects: network-manager-applet (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- nm-applet crashes with SIGSEGV https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/157355 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 157352] bottom panel stuck at top after crash
Public bug reported: My computer has crashed twice, leaving me with no choice but to force shutdown on it and each time i start it up again my bottom panel is now at the top and it is stuck there. [Bug 108527] Re: X freezes when compiz is enabled on ATI cards
Please everyone keep reports of fglrx usage out of this particular bug report. Fglrx is a closed source driver that cannot be supported or fixed by Ubuntu. Also, specifically keep NVIDIA cards to their own bug report(s), and they are always currently using closed source driver for 3D. And if you're using Ubuntu 7.04, try Ubuntu 7.10. Thank you. That said, compiz has worked fluently and without any problems here on Radeon X800 with the (default) open source driver. After filtering NVIDIA users and fglrx driver users out, which people using Ubuntu 7.10 do have hanging and which Radeon cards do they have? It seems Mobility Radeon X300 / X700 are one, but I thought X300 was already blacklisted for gutsy because of some earlier report? And one 9600 AGP user.
