[Bug 161178] Re: [regression] OpenOffice cannot open special charactered filenames via Nautilus

2007-11-12 Thread Mikko Ohtamaa
This is 100% repeatable. This is OpenOffice related problem, since it
seems to depend OpenOffice internal file functions.

I am using en_US locale on Ext3 file system.

Looks like OpenOffice titlebar filename is also garbage (unfiltered
UTF-8) when you open file åäö.odf.

Also, let me highlight that this is regression: it has been worked
before Gutsy update.

Re: [Bug 132271] Re: [GUTSY] cpu freq scaling not working anymore

2007-11-12 Thread Leszek Tarkowski
I think problem is really important. In windows you can easily fix bad
scaling behaviour by using special software. This is not the case in
linux. You have to have patched kernel. I thing ubuntu should fix this
problem. I'm not sure if this is problem just for few notebooks. Many
people could simply miss this bug, not everyone looks at frequency
scaling applet for example. I remember, that for very long time many
distors supported 2.4 and 2.6 kernels due to changes in new line of
kernels. Maybe ubuntu could do the same - keep kernels below 2.6.20
for people with old notebooks?

[Bug 132271] Re: [GUTSY] cpu freq scaling not working anymore

2007-11-12 Thread Daniel Swarbrick
How many notebooks does this problem affect? 50? 100? 10,000? Now
express that as a percentage of the total users of Ubuntu. That should
give you a rough idea of how much time should be allocated to this.

Should Ubuntu also ship older versions of X, for those old laptops that
can't handle the newer versions? Maybe an older version of GNOME too,
for laptops without so much RAM. We could create a separate version just
for these old versions give it version number 7.04, and call it
Feisty.

2007-11-12 Thread Radek Svarz
encompass, once the xorg.conf and Firefox is configured properly, there
is not needed anything else. For button selection in desktop
configurations I posted some pictures here:
http://translatecz.svarz.cz/2007/11/en-ubuntu-and-apple-mighty-
mouse.html

Just be careful, that the wireless bluetooth Mouse needs to have
slightly different settings of xorg.conf (based on the detection using
less /proc/bus/input/devices) as is mentioned here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=2758862postcount=6

encompass, if the xorg.conf and Firefox adjustments could have been done
by some automatix like software (apple mighty mouse package?) it would
save some people a lot of headaches.

On the other hand I still wonder that there is no mouse testing pane
in the Ubuntu mouse settings. I mean graphically shown selected Mouse
model with Buttons test detection.

[Bug 162159] baobab does not signal that you cannot read all folders

2007-11-12 Thread Francesco Potortì
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-utils

When you scan a folder, baobab cannot descend folders for which it does not
have permissions.
However, it is important that baobab signals this event to the user, which it
does not.
Moreover, when a scan includes mount points, baobab can estimate how much space
it could not scan, by looking at the disk usage in the mount point: baobab
should compute this difference and warn the user that it corresponds to space
that cannot be scanned.

[Bug 151544] Re: [Gutsy] GNOME takes too much time to load during system boot

2007-11-12 Thread Andrew Henry
A me too comment.

Acer Aspire 5021WLMi, was running Ubuntu Fiesty and upgraded to Gutsy.
Since upgrade gdm login takes a long time.

I also have another issue, that I do not know if others have. Logging
into GDM works once. It takes quite a while. If I log out and try to
login a second time, the panels and applets never appear. Login hangs
and I need to reboot. Restarting gdm from a tty does not help.

[Bug 162163] fnac.com website thinks Firefox on Gutsy is a wap browser

2007-11-12 Thread Bruno Bord
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

Hi,

I'm using Firefox 2.0.0.8 on Gutsy.

more precisely : Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; fr; rv:1.8.1.8)
Gecko/20071022 Ubuntu/7.10 (gutsy) Firefox/2.0.0.8

If I want to browse the fnac.com website, it looks like the website
thinks it's a WAP browser, and offers to download the WML file.

One way to fix this:
* go to about:config
* Change the general.useragent.vendorComment value to anything else than
'gutsy'

The fnac.com website works again.
Of course, using Feisty as a vendorComment doesn't trigger the bug. Nor
cinderella or gabba gabba hey

It's probably a bug on the server-side point of view, but I think it
needed to be registered, because I hope Fnac.com webmasters will fix it.

[Bug 155245] Re: installer fails to create usable xserver config

2007-11-12 Thread Michael Leamy
This bug has stopped me cold. I have a new T61p with the nVidia Quadro
570m, and I have been entirely unable to get (K)Ubuntu installed. I am
aware of the advise to edit xorg.conf, but so far I have been unable to
get the system to the point where editing a system file is an option.
During each attempt to install, this bug bricks my system outright.
Editing xorg.conf in this situation amounts to being asked to edit a
file on an OS that isn't yet installed, and to do so on a hung system.
Needless to say, this is a deal killer for me. After two weeks of trying
to come up with ways around this I eventually had to install another
distro. The local Vlug was unable to get through this one as well. FWIW,
I am new to Ubuntu and Debian, but not new to Linux.

[Bug 122207] Re: vlc before 0.8.6c allows arbitrary code execution via a multitude of vectors

2007-11-12 Thread hk47
I'm wondering if it wouldn't be better to just backport the current VLC
to the stable releases' backports repositories if it's not possible to
publish security updates in time. Better to have a leap in versions
than to leave users behind with vulnerable software. But then there
would have to be some kind of announcement that backports not only
contain newer versions of software, but also security-related updates.

[Bug 151544] Re: [Gutsy] GNOME takes too much time to load during system boot

2007-11-12 Thread lepolau

I confirm it too!

I'm running Ubuntu gutsy 7.10 i386 and my boot time after GDM is VERY
long... The boot from grub menu to the login screen is faster as Feisty.

I installed the OS twice and in a fresh install, even after several
reboots, my boot time after the GDM : 30 sec

My specs:
AMD ATLON XP 2000+
1 Gb RAM
NVidia AGP GEFORCE 6200 128 Mo

Thanks!

[Bug 160269] Re: mintinstall doesnt even start

2007-11-12 Thread Clement Lefebvre
Both issues were addressed in Linux Mint 4.0 Daryna. There is a new tool
for automatic updates called mintUpdate and in Daryna mintInstall was
made more user-friendly and now comes with a search engine.

Daryna stable should be out this week.

If you want to stay with Celena, the way you use mintInstall is simply
by browsing the software portal http://www.linuxmint.com/software, then
from there you get a .mint file and by clicking on it it will launch
mintInstall.

[Bug 51991] Re: Xorg process freezes, uses 100% of CPU. Can be killed by remote terminal.

2007-11-12 Thread Holger
Hi,

i'm experiencing the same problem: Xorg freezes after some time (might
be about 30 mins, however i'm not sure), the keybord does not respond
and even the mouse is completely frozen. I'm not sure about the remote
access but the SYSRQ+ALT and REISUB shortcut works.

i'm using gutsy with gnome on my old acer travelmate (it's some 4000er
model, but i forgot the exact name) with an ati mobility radeon 9700
graphics card (i'm using the open-source driver, not the proprietary one
from ati)

i noticed that the error only occured after i turned on desktop effects.
When i turn off all effects everything works absolutely fine and there's
no freeze up at all. I didn't have much time to investigate into this
direction, but maybe this can be a useful hint.

Regards,
Holger

2007-11-12 Thread Gioele Barabucci
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 99585 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/99585

No, this is not a dupe of #99585. The reporter of that bug did not
notice that there was an hw switch to turn the wireless card on. This
bug is about a notebook (actually many Fujitsu-Siemens notebooks) that
do not have this hw switch. Windows is able to turn the wireless card on
via software and put rf_kill to 0, instead of 2. Feisty and Gutsy
cannot.

Please remove the duplicate status.

[Bug 134446] Re: Compiz causing Hard Locks on certain systems

This problem seems hardware-related.

After installing:
Athlon 64 X2 6000
1Gb RAM
Asus M2N-E SLI
Nvidia 7300GT
Seagate SATA HD

I've had chronic lockups. System is stable for 5s-5mins before locking
up hard, unable to restart X. Same behaviour in Feisty/Gutsy x86 and
amd64.

On the same system Debian Etch will install and run fine, but when
Compiz is installed it locks up when loading the window manager at

To avoid this problem you indeed need to dsbale the CD as a software
source.

However it may be more user friendly to allow the user to decide when he
is asked for a CD whether he'd prefer the innternet at that moment for
once or for all

I'll leave the bug open as a feature request for the aptitude guys

Koen

Only 2 condition :
I have disconnected my external USB HDD , I will try to connect it in next 6
hours and see if it is about the ehci module or not
I will try the latest 2.6.23.1 tomorrow again to see if there is problem or not

But without compiz , I have no freeze at all

Computer specs :
GC : intel 915GM

Programs that are running currently :
swiftweasel ( firefox )
Wingide ( Python based IDE )
ZDE ( Zend Studio , a java based program )
