[Bug 163185] Re: ubuntu freezes completely (all graphics and mouse) when executing shell ascii forkbomb

2007-11-16 Thread KarlGoetz
The problem with 'sensible default', is that different systems handle different
amount of load differently.
Ubuntu runs on systems from ~800mhz PC to 8 cored x32 threads (?) T2 Sparcs.

the limit that saves my (example) 800mhz pc will mean that the T2 is
almost idle.

ps. I think the bug would have been better titled 'set maximum number of
processes'. or similar.

[Bug 163283] Re: [SRU/Gutsy]: Two patches for gtkpod-aac

2007-11-16 Thread John Dong
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: gtkpod-aac

This is a combination of #135178 and #145506, being handled as one SRU
for timeliness. They are independent patches and I will detail testing
  information for both.
+
+ === Streamlined Verification Procedures ===
+ This procedure will test both bugs at the same time.
+
+ (1) Move any existing ~/.gtkpod to somewhere else as a backup
+ (2) Start gtkpod
+ (3) Click Local on the left pane
+ (4) On the toolbar, hit Add File
+ (5) Find a .mp4 .m4v or .m4a file and add it. Google filetype:m4a for sample
files
+
+ EXPECTED BEHAVIOR:
+ File is added and now shows up in the local repository
+ DEFECTIVE BEHAVIOR:
+ (1) If #145506 is unfixed, an error dialog pops up asking you to insert the
iPod assocated with the repository first. Of course, there's no iPod associated
with a local repo
+ (2) If #135178 is unfixed, an error dialog pops up saying there is no
support for .mp4 format.
+

   PERTAINING TO #135178 =
The new upstream gtkpod release tries to implement the "Group" metadata
field for MP4, which requires a newer libmp4v2 than Gutsy has. This causes
./configure to build without AAC/MP4 support. The patch I provide reverts to
previous Gtkpod behavior of ignoring the "Group" metadata tag for .mp4 files.

  TEST CASE:
Try to use gtkpod to add a .mp4 file onto an iPod.

  EXPECTED BEHAVIOR:

[Bug 163037] Re: Many applications of universe are neglected and produce frustration in users

2007-11-16 Thread Emmet Hikory
Wow! Zim gets almost no bug triage. Still, the bugs against zim are
actionable, whereas this bug is not as originally stated.

Separately, I think there is likely value in finding a way to determine
the set of applications that are useless or don't work, and that
noticing when users install them, and immediately uninstall them can
help, and that this data could be used to generate a blacklist for
released packages. I just don't think that a bug is the way to fix
that: it needs more thought and discussion, and affects lots of places
(multiple packages, possible privacy concerns for collecting user data,
changes to the repository management system, etc.). As such, generating
a specification is more likely to provide a useful response by people
who might be able to implement such a system.

[Bug 162795] Re: Cannot rename files with Traditional Chinese in Nautilus

2007-11-16 Thread StevenMcCoy
Testing has shown Nautilus to be very inconsistent with operation.
Sometimes input will work in Chinese and sometimes no input will be
accepted at all. For instance swapping between gedit and nautilius can
sometimes make input work. Sometimes when swapping back and forth
between gedit and nautilus with a F2 rename file box open all the text
input that did not appear will suddenly appear.

I have currently downgraded all boxes to dual-boot Feisty/Gutsy.
Downgrading Nautilus in Gutsy didn't work out too well to test, the
window would just vanish when doing anything.

** Summary changed:

- Cannot rename files with zh_HK locale in Nautilus
+ Cannot rename files with Traditional Chinese in Nautilus

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: nautilus

- Ubuntu 7.10 with locale set to zh_HK.UTF-8.
+ Ubuntu 7.10 with locale set to zh_HK.UTF-8 or zh_TW.UTF-8

Similar to Bug #94841, with Nautilus on the desktop of browsing folders
files can be renamed with the default input method (English). If the
input method is changed to Traditional Chinese / Quick I can no longer
enter or delete any characters using the keyboard. The keyboard still
works with the Nautilus UI, and the mouse can be used to cut and paste
text in the name box. After this has occurred even selecting the
default input method will no longer work, the user has to log out and
log back in again to rename files.

Renaming on the console works fine.

Logging in with English locale and starting up SCIM and entering Chinese
- works fine. Similarly using zh_TW (Taiwan) works fine.
+ works fine.

[Bug 163283] [SRU/Gutsy]: Two patches for gtkpod-aac

2007-11-16 Thread John Dong
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gtkpod-aac

This is a combination of #135178 and #145506, being handled as one SRU
for timeliness. They are independent patches and I will detail testing
information for both.

 PERTAINING TO #135178 =
The new upstream gtkpod release tries to implement the "Group" metadata field
for MP4, which requires a newer libmp4v2 than Gutsy has. This causes
./configure to build without AAC/MP4 support. The patch I provide reverts to
previous Gtkpod behavior of ignoring the "Group" metadata tag for .mp4 files.

TEST CASE:
Try to use gtkpod to add a .mp4 file onto an iPod.

EXPECTED BEHAVIOR:
Gtkpod adds the file to your iPod

DEFECTIVE BEHAVIOR:
Gtkpod informs user that it was compiled without mp4 support.

ALTERNATE TEST (i.e. non iPod owners):
Look at build log output at the end of ./configure phase

EXPECTED BEHAVIOR:
./configure reports that it will build with MP4/AAC support

[Bug 155458] Re: Strange behaviour switching users

2007-11-16 Thread Stanley Sokolow
Also running Gutsy Gibbon (Ubuntu 7.10) for Intel PCs, nVidia driver, all
up-to-date.
Similar problem. When switching from user 1 (a non-administrative user) to
user 2 (administrative permission user) and back to user 1, I get a blank
off-white (or very pale brown) screen with mouse pointer arrow, but nothing
else. I got out of it by exiting X using ctrl-alt-backspace, which put me
back at a login screen. This blank screen appears to be the same as I get when
I switch using Ctrl-Alt-F9. (For me, Ctrl-Alt-F7 gets a black screen.) I
haven't tried switching to the X system screen using Ctrl-Alt-F10, but I'll try
that and let you know in a follow-up comment.

If I switch user while Firefox still is running a window on user 1, I
can login as user 2, but the system monitor shows that some processes
are taking a lot of cpu time even though I'm doing nothing as user 2.
Running "top" from a terminal window then shows that the Firefox and
compiz processes are running and consuming most of the cpu time, doing
who knows what in the invisible background instead of sleeping. Maybe
the Firefox is continuing to run some animations on the web page it's
displaying. When I return to user 1, there is no Firefox window. If I
run Firefox then, it starts by telling me that it was not shut down
correctly and asking if I want the old session restored or instead to
start a new session. So, it appears that before switching user I'll
have to close all open windows (not just minimize them).

[Bug 108961] Re: Pen no longer works after resuming from suspend

2007-11-16 Thread Rick @ rickandpatty.com
I have a Toshiba M200 tablet with the same problem. Is this is a kernel
problem rather than a Wacom driver problem. The digitizer in the M200
is a serial device (I think that's true on the Thinkpad X41/X60 tablets,
too).

When initially booting the system, the digitizer's serial port is
detected: (dmesg output below)

[ 22.207011] Serial: 8250/16550 driver $Revision: 1.90 $ 4 ports, IRQ sharing
enabled
[ 22.207940] 00:09: ttyS0 at I/O 0x338 (irq = 4) is a 16550A

The pen works fine, until I suspend. After resuming, the pen fails, and
dmesg starts spitting out these errors:

[ 1024.204000] ttyS0: LSR safety check engaged!
[ 1024.204000] ttyS0: LSR safety check engaged!
[ 1024.204000] ttyS0: LSR safety check engaged!

Googling that message seems to indicate that the reason the pen no
longer works is that the serial port is no longer being detected after
the resume. The same thing happens with hibernate -a dead serial port
/ pen on resume.

[Bug 145506] Re: gtkpod-aac does not allow adding local tracks, claims iPod is not loaded (gutsy)

2007-11-16 Thread John Dong
Yes, we know bugs need to be fixed. However, this is not a Ubuntu-
introduced bug and I've given a bit of time to look into what causes it
but could not find a culprit. Our best hope is to wait for upstream to
fix it.

[Bug 163280] gtali cannot save high scores

2007-11-16 Thread JBryan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-games

GTali cannot save high scores, and the menu item is insensitive. I have
seen the other bug reports that say this is fixed, but it doesn't seem
to be. This broke for me when I installed Fiesty. Now I have upgraded
to Gutsy, and it is still broken. The other games seem to be able to
save high scores. I am in the games group. I have touched the files
/var/games/gtali.Regular.scores and /var/games/gtali.Colors.scores (they
are owned by root:games and have 664 permissions). At one time there
was /var/games/gtali.scores. I moved it to
/var/games/gtali.Regular.scores but that didn't help either. I have
tried without either of those files there as well.

[Bug 135178] Re: [gutsy SRU] gtkpod-aac does not live up to its name

2007-11-16 Thread John Dong
** Summary changed:

- [gutsy] gtkpod-aac does not live up to its name
+ [gutsy SRU] gtkpod-aac does not live up to its name

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: gtkpod-aac

- gtkpod-aac is not compiled with mp4/aac support in Gutsy. When I tried
- to recompile the package with mp4/aac support, it failed. gtkpod-aac
- worked as expected in Feisty.
+ DESCRIPTION:
+
+ gtkpod-aac is not compiled with mp4/aac support in Gutsy. When I tried to
recompile the package with mp4/aac support, it failed. gtkpod-aac worked as
expected in Feisty.
+ [Added by John Dong:]
+ The new upstream gtkpod release tries to implement the "Group" metadata
field for MP4, which requires a newer libmp4v2 than Gutsy has. This causes
./configure to build without AAC/MP4 support. The patch I provide reverts to
previous Gtkpod behavior of ignoring the "Group" metadata tag for .mp4 files.
+
+
+ TEST CASE:
+ Try to use gtkpod to add a .mp4 file onto an iPod.
+
+ EXPECTED BEHAVIOR:
+ Gtkpod adds the file to your iPod
+
+ DEFECTIVE BEHAVIOR:
+ Gtkpod informs user that it was compiled without mp4 support.
+
+ ALTERNATE TEST (i.e. non iPod owners):
+ Look at build log output at the end of ./configure phase
+
+ EXPECTED BEHAVIOR:
+ ./configure reports that it will build with MP4/AAC support
+
+ DEFECTIVE BEHAVIOR:
+ ./configure reports that it will build without MP4/AAC support

[Bug 162310] Re: Please merge miro 1.0-1 (universe) from Debian unstable (main)

2007-11-16 Thread Andres Mejia
I mentioned in bug #163139 that miro would need a build depends on
firefox-dev. I later compiled and ran miro using the latest version of
xulrunner found in Debian and noticed that it ran faster with libxul
than from building against firefox-dev, and this was without installing
python-psyco. I've attached a patch of the only changes that I've made
for building miro-1.0-1.

[Bug 153759] Re: gtkpod-aac unable to find support scripts

2007-11-16 Thread John Dong
The gtkpod-aac binary sets the correct location (/usr/share/gtkpod-
aac/scripts by default, but if a previous gtkpod release set this path
to something else, then it can be incorrect. Look in your Gtkpod
preferences for where to specify the path to the script, and correct it.

As far as I can tell, this is not a bug in the gtkpod-aac package.

[Bug 94152] Re: synaptic does not automatically update after repo changes

2007-11-16 Thread sicofante
I totally agree with the original poster and I suggest you make it an
option in Synaptic preferences.

There has been some discussion about this here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=3786228#post3786228. Some
suggest that users in narrow band connections might desire to keep
things as they are, but it's definitely bothersome for people on
broadband access to click twice (first OK in the dialog box, then
Reload) for an obvious choice.

[Bug 163042] Re: nmbd crashes after routine Dapper upgrade

2007-11-16 Thread EzNet
@ NoOp
I am on 7.10 currently and the block is in effect for
http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/s/samba/* now - Hopefully some of
those family members were not immediately able to update (powered off, for
instance). :)

I don't know what time the block went into effect for 7.10, but it is
currently 'forbidding' the update...

[Bug 163275] dkim-filter docs may have incorrect postfix config

2007-11-16 Thread Matt "Cyber Dog" LaPlante
Public bug reported:

I'm new to dkim-filter, so hopefully someone with more knowledge can
validate this. I've installed the package under gutsy, and am reading
/usr/share/doc/dkim-filter/README.Debian.gz

Under the section "Notes for Ubuntu specific changes" it is suggested to add
milter_macro_daemon_name = SIGNING
to main.cf.

As I understand it, this macro setting is only meaningful if the dkim-
filter daemon is actually watching for macros (the -M flag). As far as
I can tell, setting -M in dkim-filter is not done anywhere in ubuntu's
package, so adding it to main.cf without also instructing the user to
change the default dkim config to include it is pointless.

** Affects: dkim-milter (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided

[Bug 115223] Re: Please backport Wengophone 2.1 from Hardy to Feisty

2007-11-16 Thread John Dong
Thanks for your work, Ludovico -- can you provide testing packages and
have yourself and another person (at the least) confirm that it
functions? I think this is a good candidate for a source-change
backport.

[Bug 163166] Re: Get "403 Forbidden" in update manager

2007-11-16 Thread Chuck Stearns
dpkg -s shows the same results on both my laptop and desktop.

i do have a custom kernel on my laptop, however, to circumvent the acpi
issue (unrelated) - i suppose the custom kernel could be causing
problems? Anyone else in a similar config?

[Bug 55558] Re: net-tools uses an old linux layout for /proc

2007-11-16 Thread Paul Dufresne
For Hardy I have:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/proc/net$ ifconfig lo
loLink encap:Local Loopback
  inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0
  inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host
  UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1
  RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
  TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
  collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
  RX bytes:0 (0.0 b) TX bytes:0 (0.0 b)

That said, frankly I don't understand.
I am not a developer, just a bug triager.

What make you think that there should be a: 'EtherTalk Phase 2 addr:0/0' line
in the output of
ifconfig lo, and what is the link with /proc filesystem?
