[Bug 163505] Kubuntu and Xubuntu I386 installers fail with /sbin/modprobe terminated abnormally

2007-11-17 Thread Kevin Slade
Public bug reported:

The system is a Gygabyte GA-M55S-S3 with a Nvidia GeForce 7 Series
Video. It has an AMD 5600+ with 2 GB ram

Both Kubuntu and Xubuntu I386 7.10 fail with the message that
/sbin/modprobe terminated abnormally. The Pata HDD has not been probed /
added.

The same system has and still is running Kubuntu 7.04 64bit. I was
attempting to upgrade to Gutsy, but was going to use I386 as some
applications are missing support in the 64bit version

[Bug 160403] Re: Please sync gpac 0.4.4-0.3 from debian-multimedia.org unstable

2007-11-17 Thread John Dong
Rationale for update:

  - some workarounds for iPod file producing (special UUID needed)
(-ipod option, auto on for .m4a and .m4v extensions)

This change alone is very very important; this will be the only tool in
Ubuntu that can be used to produce .m4v that will be accepted by iTunes
properly as a valid video file.

[Bug 160403] Re: Please sync gpac 0.4.4-0.3 from debian-multimedia.org unstable

2007-11-17 Thread John Dong
Regardless of how gpac 0.4.4 is brought in from debian-multimedia, it
should still be done whether via sync or manual upload. The chances of
this entering Debian is near zero as gpac is legally encumbered by the
MPEG4 related patents. Historically we've handled syncs of this before.

Anyway, I am assigning this to myself -- I am personally interested in
gpac and will take on the responsibility of getting it into Hardy.

[Bug 163494] [gutsy] refuses to connect to VPN if ppp0 is already in use

2007-11-17 Thread Alexey Osipov
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager-pptp

1. Connect anything via ppp0 (in my case it was HP iPAQ PDA via synce). So,
interface ppp0 is used now, and PPTP will use ppp1 instead.
2. Try to connect to any VPN through NetworkManager applet.

It responds with graphic warning message like "server didn't response
valid configuration" (can't say clearly because in my case there appear
russian translation of it). And here is the part of my syslog:

Nov 18 11:22:28 lion2002 pppd[7492]: Plugin nm-pppd-plugin.so loaded.
Nov 18 11:22:28 lion2002 pppd[7492]: nm-pppd-plugin: plugin initialized.

IP4 Address from ppp.

Nov 18 11:22:29 lion2002 pppd[7494]: Connection terminated.
Nov 18 11:22:29 lion2002 pppd[7494]: Exit.

As you can see, nm-pppd-plugin "thinks" we don't recieve IP4 Address, but it's
not true (see log).
I think it's because nm-pppd-plugin looks for ppp0 IP4 Address or similar.

[Bug 155784] Re: [gutsy] /usr/lib/libssl.so missing

2007-11-17 Thread Psychiccyberfreak
I still seem to be experiencing the issue. I am using ubuntu gutsy
x86_64. Here's what I did:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ mumble
Locale is en_US
QSslSocket: cannot find ssl library: QLibrary::load_sys: Cannot load ssl
(libssl.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory).
OpenSSL Support: 0
No ciphers of at least 128 bit found
Aborted (core dumped)
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ getlibs /usr/bin/mumble
This application isn't missing any dependencies
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$

Note that I did use a i386 package. When I compiled it myself under
x86_64 it seems to run fine.

[Bug 163488] Enhancement request

2007-11-17 Thread SlaveToSoftware
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gthumb

I'm a new Ubuntu user with a good Unix skill set that's ten years dated.
I've been mostly W32 since.

My first reaction after going full screen was that I'd be able to use
the arrow keys to move previous and next.

Seems like an easy (?) fix.

Thanks,

-Mike

[Bug 163487] Three regular error messages after every update of software

2007-11-17 Thread CARedford
Public bug reported:

During the update from fiesty fawn to Gutsy Gibbon, I received the following
error messages and then the update ended. It hadn't gone into the cleaning
step yet.
E: semantic: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 255
E: cedet-contrib: dependency problems - leaving unconfigured
E: cogre: dependency problems - leaving unconfigured
I haven't had any noticeable problems with Gutsy Gibbon, however every time
software updates are downloaded I receive those same three error messages.

[Bug 163481] Re: Gutsy: USB devices stop working

2007-11-17 Thread Sam
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.20

The USB devices (mouse, printer) connected to my Toshiba Satellite M-40
laptop running on Gutsy started to randomly stop working today. I've had
Gutsy installed for just over a month now, and had been running Feisty
for 6 months with no problems with either device -- no idea what caused
this to stop working, although I did install several updates for Gutsy
today. Rebooting usually brings back functionality for a bit, but the
devices will eventually get dropped -- it has happened as soon as typing
the user name in GDM, but often while typing something in the actual
Gnome session, e.g. into internet browser search fields, terminal, or
  OpenOffice.

I noticed this first with the mouse -- it is a Microsoft Standard
Wireless Optical Mouse. Unplugging and then plugging back in does *not*
help, even to a different port. The printer, a Samsung ML-1740 laser,
also gets dropped. I managed to grab the outputs from lsusb before and
after the failure, as well as dmesg and Xorg.0.log, will attach.

Again, I have had *no* USB problems with Ubuntu for seven months, and I
have no idea what could have happened to trigger this. My keyboard and
touchpad still work after USB devices stop working, so I am able to
  continue using the laptop.

The last few lines from dmesg could be helpful:

  [ 232.188000] uhci_hcd :00:1d.0: host controller process error,
something bad happened!
  [ 232.188000] uhci_hcd :00:1d.0: host controller halted, very bad!
  [ 232.188000] uhci_hcd :00:1d.0: HC died; cleaning up
  [ 232.188000] usb 1-1: USB disconnect, address 4
  [ 232.192000] drivers/usb/class/usblp.c: usblp0: removed
  [ 232.192000] usb 1-2: USB disconnect, address 5
+
+ Edit: I tried plugging in another mouse (Logitech Optical Mouse, wired),
+ with the same results.

[Bug 112518] Re: Switch User freezes at blank screen

2007-11-17 Thread Dennis Moore
Happens to me also, Gutsy 7.10 with nvidia 8800 GTS.

Here's my workaround: When I've got the blank screen, I move my cursor
to the middle of the screen where it changes from an arrow to an I-beam.
Click once, enter your user name and hit enter. Click it again, enter
your password, and hit enter. Gets me right back in every time. The text
box is there, you just can't see it (at least in my case).

[Bug 163417] Re: kdesudo+dolphin leads to command execution vulnerability

2007-11-17 Thread Matthew Flaschen
I think there is. I think this is a problem with d3lphin, not with
kdesu. Kdesu should be able to run arbitrary command-lines, just like
sudo can. The problem here is that d3lphin isn't doing proper escaping
before passing to kdesu. It should quote the "%u" as well as escaping
any instances of ' to \' and " to \".

[Bug 163481] Gutsy: USB devices stop working

2007-11-17 Thread Sam
Public bug reported:

[Bug 9392] Re: Proper myspell dictionary should be installed at installation time

2007-11-17 Thread Ralf Nieuwenhuijsen
@paul dufresne

Please do not close this bug.

This is a high visibility bug. It could be renamed to any of these:
- "language support dialog LIES about full language support installed"
- "myspell- packages should be renamed to openoffice-dictionaries- so user can
find it in synaptic"
- "myspell- packages should be added to Add/Remove so users can easily install
language support"
- "ubuntu desktop guide (the official documentation) does explain how to setup
working spell checking in OO"

Exactly how are users expected to mysteriously understand that they need
to install the myspell packages to get spellchecking working in
OpenOffice? They don't.

This bug is about the general case of 90% of the ubuntu users not being
able to use spell-checking, because they lack the knowledge and skills
required to set this up. The blue-print is about a specific redo of all
language support that would also (incidently) close this bug.

But until its in Hardy and working for non-english dictionaries as well, this
bug should remain open and confirmed!
Just because there is a plan of attack that will someday close this bug,
doesn't make the current situation any better. It's not a wishlist bug. It
should be a high priority.

Wouldn't it just be lovely if people outside of the US and UK start
using OpenOffice instead of KWrite or AbiWord? Because currently,
without being able to install spell-checking, the whole openoffice
package is just plain BROKEN for the rest of the world.

[Bug 163482] Xinerama cursor problem in second monitor

2007-11-17 Thread Rich Wales
Public bug reported:

I'm running Feisty on a Dell Optiplex GX280. I recently upgraded the
video system with a dual-head Radeon card and two 1680x1050 monitors,
and it's almost working fine using Xinerama. The only problem is that
the mouse pointer isn't updating its appearance properly when I'm
positioned in the secondary (right-hand) monitor. Whatever shape the
cursor had in the primary (left-hand) monitor, it keeps that same shape
no matter what I'm doing on the right. For example, if the mouse
pointer is the default arrow shape when I move it onto the right-hand
monitor, it keeps the arrow shape even if it ought to be changing to a
pointing finger (for a web link), or a "resize", or a "please wait".

In particular, this makes it very difficult to resize a window on the
secondary monitor, because I can't tell when the cursor is in exactly
the right position to drag the window border.

Any ideas what might be causing this sort of misbehaviour?

FWIW, I did try using Big-Desktop, but I abandoned that method because
it wouldn't give me a combined screen resolution higher than 2048x768
(yecch).

[Bug 129867] Re: Incorrect rendering of account tabs under XGL and Compiz

2007-11-17 Thread Saïvann Carignan
Thanks a lot for your help on this.

I got to reproduce the bug with xserver-xgl installed on a laptop with a
ATI mobility radeon X300 card. Since it only happens with XGL, I added
that package to the bug and changed the description.

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: gnucash

- If I use Compiz, Beryl or Compiz Fusion, with XGL and an AMD ATI card,
- it doesn't render the account tabs properly, it does render the reports
- correctly.
+ this bugs happens when using Compiz-Fusion, Beryl or Compiz with
+ xserver-xgl ( most of time with ATI cards which don't support AIGLX ).
+ This bug can't be reproduced under AIGLX so far.

- It's a pain to add information to the accounts or to scroll them.
+ With GLX, Gnucash doesn't render the account tabs properly, it does
+ render the reports correctly. It's also impossible to change the date
+ field of a transaction.

I have Ubuntu 7.04, the ATI drivers that come with Ubuntu, and an AMD
ATI Radeon Xpress 200M 5955 (PCIE) card.

- I have tried GnuCash 2.2 compiled from source and have the same problem.
-
- According to Jean Pierre Rupp, 8.42.3 version of AMD ATI drivers with
- AIGLX from the AMD website fixes that issue.
+ This bug happens on every ATI driver tested so far with XGL and with
+ every Gnucash version.

[Bug 163479] Upgrade manager stops with questions during a distribution update

2007-11-17 Thread Tamas
Public bug reported:

Greetings!
This is my first time when I write here.
I enjoy Ubuntu since about 6 months. And now I upgrade to GG.
During the upgrade, what is a several hours long process, the system asks
questions (like change configuration files or not). To answer them, I should be
sitting in front of the screen all the time.
It would be nice to be able to start the process, and ... go to sleep while it
is being done.

I have two suggestions:
1. beep when the process stops, so, wake me up or "call upon my attention"
2. Instead of stopping during the process, collect all these kind of questions,
and ask them at the end of the process. So, one could see the questions after
his (her) sleep, when the process is well finished already.

Thanks to all for Ubuntu!

Greetings

Tamas

[Bug 58017] Re: Default spelling on UK locale machine is English_US

2007-11-17 Thread Adric Riedel
This is rich. I'm in the US, have a system set up everywhere else for
US English, and yet right now Firefox is complaining about how I've

I can't help but wonder if a fix has been committed that hard-wired all
systems to British English.

Anyway, I realize this is only an annoyance, but nevertheless it
shouldn't be happening.

[Bug 163417] Re: kdesudo+dolphin leads to command execution vulnerability

2007-11-17 Thread John Dong
Right, as I noted in the original description various escaping of the
argument in the .desktop file fixes it for some filenames but still
breaks for other file names, and is defintiely open to intentional
attacks. The real fix needs to be done in some more solid way...

I am thinking whether or not kdesu should just shell-escape its
arguments. Kdesu should also have something similar to the GNU -- option
to stop parsing for parameters and assume everything after -- is one
large parameter. Is there any real usecase for kdesu taking in bourne
shell syntax?

[Bug 163476] Grub Error 17 AND Boot from CD Problem

Public bug reported:

I had both Windows XP and Ubuntu on my laptop (T42 IBM).
After formatting the Ubuntu drive from Windows XP (because I wanted to

I got Grub Error 17 after doing so.
I tried to fix this by deleting grub.
It seems that in order to do so I need XP or ubuntu live cd.
I tried to do this but I encountered another problem which I consider more

the system now won't boot from cd even after changing priorities in the BIOS
i really need what's in my laptop (windows specifically).
any solution to make my system boot from cd? (it seems like my system is trying

[Bug 64422] Re: adept doesn't start

2007-11-17 Thread hangfirew8
I just installed Kubuntu 7.10 from DVD. First thing I did after install
was to try to update the system. After an initial update it offered to
upgrade me to Gutsy Gibbon 7.10 (which I just installed). I declined.
Since then I ran it from the K menu button and I get a ksedu prompt and
then nothing. After 2 attempts I ran sudo apt-get update and sudo apt-
get upgrade. Nothing was downloaded but several install configs were
overwritten (no harm done, it's a brand new installation.)

Running adept_manager from the command line yeilds:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ adept_manager
Segmentation fault (core dumped)
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$

A bad start for a new release.

[Bug 163396] Re: wsjt dumps core when started

2007-11-17 Thread Charlie Brune
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: wsjt

Install python-numpy (to fix a dependency problem in this package that
I've reported in a separate bug), wsjt dumps core when started.
Starting it from the menu or a command line produces this result.
+
+ To reproduce:
+ -- Simply type "wsjt" in a command line.
+ -- You'll see a couple of windows appear briefly. It looks like wsjt will
start up, but then they disappear and you'll get a "Segmentation fault" message.

Since the other bug was marked as a dup of this, I'll note again that
you can fix accidental manifestations of this problem (e.g. a folder
called New Folder) by quoting the %u in d3lphin_su, but that won't stand
up to deliberate attacks.

[Bug 129910] Re: tty[1-6] are active but display nothing in Gutsy

2007-11-17 Thread Paul Dufresne
I do have a VERY different workaround, that let me suggest the real bug
is with xserver-xorg-video-intel.

Everytime I set my /etc/X11/xorg.conf file to use 'i810' driver, my TTY[1-6]
works fine.
And when I set Xorg to use 'intel' driver, my TTY[1-6] goes away.

[Bug 67341] Re: powernowd doesn't use /etc/default/powernowd anymore

2007-11-17 Thread dAniel hAhler
This patch should fix this: if $OPTIONS are set in
/etc/default/powernowd, the init script does not use the ondemand
governor instead of starting powernowd.

Additionally, it activates the "ignore_nice_load" setting, which is the
as powernowd does - unless you use the "-n" option, which would include
the nice load.

[Bug 153186] Re: powernowd doesn't start with init script

2007-11-17 Thread dAniel hAhler
I guess that powernowd does not start, because "use_ondemand" in the
init script is successful.

Matthew said in another bug's comment:
"The ondemand governor can react to load changes more quickly than powernowd
can, so powernowd exits on machines which support ondemand."

However, I just came here myself, because the "ondemand" governor does not
appear to ignore load caused by niced processes, as powernowd would do.
You can change this by:
echo 1 | sudo tee /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/ondemand/ignore_nice_load

I've prepared a patch for powernowd, which would not use the ondemand
governor, if $OPTIONS are given in /etc/default/powernowd and would also
activate ignore_nice_load when using the ondemand governor.

Please report back, if my guess is right and what you think about this.

Thank you.

[Bug 163473] Gstreamer apps halt decoding FLAC files on checksum error

2007-11-17 Thread Philip Kovac
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gstreamer-flac

Totem, Rhythmbox, and presumably other gstreamer-utilizing applications
will not make a "best effort" at decoding a FLAC file for playback if
CRC fails; a moderately corrupted, but otherwise playable file, will be
rendered unusable.

Steps to reproduce:
1) Find/create a FLAC file that contains a CRC error
2) Load file in Rhythmbox or Totem
3) Play file
4) Player will stop midway through the track (where the error occurs,) and pop
up a dialog box saying "An error occured: Could not decode stream." A message
appears on stderr:
** Message: Error: Could not decode stream.
gstflacdec.c(634): gst_flac_dec_error_callback (): /play/decodebin0/flacdec0:
CRC mismatch (2)

Suggested behavior:
4) Player skips or attempts to decode the frame for which the checksum failed;
still print error to stderr.

If my understand of the way GStreamer pipelines work is correct, always
ignoring checksum errors would be a Bad Thing. It would result in one of
the "main features" of FLAC becoming untrue of gstreamer pipelines used
to transcode it, namely, guaranteed data integrity. However, it should
be somehow possible to allow for the FLAC plugin to ignore errors in
certain cases.
