[Bug 211631] Re: CIFS/SMBFS issue (was not resolved on #207441)

2008-04-23 Thread Laurens Simonis
I don't know if this bug is related to #212019, but the unmounting
problem exists for me on a machine with no wifi-capabilities. I'm about
to try http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=293513 as a fix tonight,
but that sounds like a workaround rather than a solutioni.

[Bug 45842] Re: nfs shares not mounted at startup

2008-04-23 Thread T. Ribbrock
I suprised that his fix only seems to affect sysvinit - I just ran
into this problem on Gutsy once again (very annoying) and noticed that
sysvinit is not installed on that box. This is an out-of-box 7.10
install with updates. sysvinit is in the list of packages that can be
installed, however, if I try to install it, several other packages will
be uninstalled:

- apparmor
- apparmor-utils
- startup-tasks
- system-services
- ubuntu-minimal
- upstart
- upstart-compat-sysv
- upstart-logd

If Hardy works the same, I wonder whether the fix in sysvinit is
sufficient if it isn't used. What am I missing here?

2008-04-23 Thread Matthew Caron
I think upstart-compat-sysv provides the same sysv functionality is
sysvinit, which is why a bunch of stuff is going to be removed.

Perhaps a similar patch needs to be written for upstart?

[Bug 155947] Re: libnss-ldap: calls to initgroups() causes boot to hang when using 'bind_policy hard'

2008-04-23 Thread Dustin Kirkland
Howdy all-

An updated libnss-ldap package is available in the Hardy repos as of
yesterday, containing a fix for this problem.

We've tested it in our environments and it seems to solve the issue.
I'm curious if anyone else out there has tried it, and if problems
persist.

[Bug 219929] Re: dhcp3-client warns about nonexisting pid

2008-04-23 Thread Roman Yepishev
Frankly speaking, I could not find the code that can creates the empty
file, but here are the steps to reproduce:

1. Find interface that is not connected (to simplify tests), in my case
it is eth0.

2. Run and interrupt the client:
 sudo dhclient eth0
 [sudo] password for rtg:
Internet Systems Consortium DHCP Client V3.0.5
 Copyright 2004-2006 Internet Systems Consortium.
 All rights reserved.
 For info, please visit http://www.isc.org/sw/dhcp/

 Listening on LPF/eth0/00:c0:9f:b1:0e:04
 Sending on LPF/eth0/00:c0:9f:b1:0e:04
 Sending on Socket/fallback
 DHCPDISCOVER on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 8

3. Now rerun the client:
 sudo dhclient eth0
There is already a pid file /var/run/dhclient.pid with pid 134519120
Internet Systems Consortium DHCP Client V3.0.5

 For info, please visit http://www.isc.org/sw/dhcp/

4. Look at pidfile:
 ll /var/run/dhclient.pid

[Bug 221197] [NEW] libldap-2.4-2 replaces libldap2 but does not provide it

2008-04-23 Thread Peter L Jones
Public bug reported:

Trying to install WINE from http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt requires
libldap2. However, trying to install that package results in:

Package libldap2 is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
However the following packages replace it:
  slapd libldap-2.4-2

Should libldap-2.4-2 provide libldap2 to satisfy the WINE dependency?

[Bug 220406] Re: Missing symlink /usr/lib/gcj-4.2

2008-04-23 Thread ©TriMoon™
If you would have read my OP carefully you would have come to only 1
(one) conclusion and thats that they will list entries that are using
(in the end) the symlink i wrote about...

Anyway --list, shows: (this is same with all others for )
/usr/lib/jvm/java-gcj/jre/lib/libgcjwebplugin.so

And --display version: (this is same with all others for )
$update-alternatives --display firefox-javaplugin.so
firefox-javaplugin.so - status is manual.
 link currently points to /usr/lib/gcj-4.2/libgcjwebplugin.so
/usr/lib/jvm/java-gcj/jre/lib/libgcjwebplugin.so - priority 1042
Current `best' version is /usr/lib/jvm/java-gcj/jre/lib/libgcjwebplugin.so.

When I follow the rabbit I endup seeing that /usr/lib/jvm/java-gcj/jre/lib/
contains:
rt.jar - ../../../../../share/java/libgcj-4.2.jar
jsse.jar - ../../../../../share/java/libgcj-4.2.jar
' ' ' ' ' etc all entries are like above except:
libgcjwebplugin.so - /usr/lib/gcj-4.2-81/libgcjwebplugin.so

Which means there are 2 problems more...
the libgcj-4.2.jar entries should become libgcj.jar, so things keep working
with updates..
the last entry should become /usr/lib/gcj-4.2/libgcjwebplugin.so so things
keep working with updates..
It would be even better if it became /usr/lib/gcj/libgcjwebplugin.so when you
make yet another symlink:
/usr/lib/gcj - /usr/lib/gcj-4.2

You might want to change the status away from incomplete, unless you want this
report to fade-away without resolution.
Im not sure how much more complete i can be :)

[Bug 220890] [NEW] [hardy] software-properties-gtk doesn't recognize (nor know about) ports.ubuntu.com

2008-04-23 Thread Herbert V. Riedel
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

Public security bug reported:

1.) When running software-properties-gtk on powerpc, it configures
/etc/apt/source.list with archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu and
security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu, even although those don't carry the powerpc
arch anymore; leaving the system update-wise in a dead-end, thus also
causing the casual non-geek user to miss criticial security updates for
hardy :-/

2.) when calling software-properties-gtk after having configured
/etc/apt/source.list manually for ports.ubuntu.com/, software-
properties-gtk lists the ports.ubunt.com entries as 'third party
software' sources

Has happened to me with Disk and Filesystems on Hardy RC. I had rebooted after

I will be updating couple of more computers after the release on the 24th, will

[Bug 220892] [NEW] Tomboy's sshfs synchronisation keeps trying to mount for each new synchronisation

2008-04-23 Thread Mary Gardiner
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 152978 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/152978

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: tomboy

The sshfs synchronisation plugin seems to like mounting over and over
again, without testing if the mount point is ready, or unmounting after
use.

Scenario one: Adding an ssh synchronization.

1. Go to Preferences - Synchronization and add a new location.
2. Click Save
3. In a note go to Tools - Synchronize Notes

Expected result: synchronisation begins (assuming sshfs is in order)

Actual result: ~/.tomboy.log shows fuse: mountpoint is not empty, fuse:
if you are sure this is safe, use the 'nonempty' mount option. Need to
run fusermount -u ~/.tomboy/sync-sshfs in order to synchronize.

Scenario two: doing repeated synchronizations.

1. Having already configured synchronization, go to Tools - Synchronize Notes.
2. Synchronization completes.
3. Go to Tools - Synchronize Notes a second time.

[Bug 220893] [NEW] no support for videopodcast playback out of rythmbox

2008-04-23 Thread Patrick
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Rythmbox does not support videopodcast playback out of the box.

I have to go to /home/my name - open the created file folder for this
pocast - start it with totem player.

My critic:
1) Video podcast is not integrated in rythmbox, although there is not much
difference between an audio podcast and a video pocdast. Should work in the
program.
2) The video podcast should automatically downloaded to the folder /home/my
name/videos and not into the folder /home/my name/.
3) The video playback should be integrated in the lower left corner of the
rythmbox gui. Using this corner only for showing cd covers is a kind of
overkill.

[Bug 210153] Re: [ooo-build] [hardy] calc: sum show err:529

2008-04-23 Thread mikedev
I've noticed a similar error when opening an excel file in OOo 2.4
(ubuntu). Excel seems to try and convert text to a value automatically
when a mathematical formula is applied to a cell which contains a text
value.

In the attached sample excel file, the text value 1 in cell A2 is
added to the numerical value 2 in cell A3 and the result displayed in
cell A4. In excel the value in cell A4 is '3'. In OOo 2.3 the result is
'2' since the text value in cell A2 is treated as zero. In OOo 2.4
(ubuntu) the result in cell A4 is 'Err:529'. If the Value() function is
applied to the value in cell A2 the result is '3' as expected. The
official (sun) builds of OOo 2.4 and OOo3devM7 both display '2' in cell
A4.

This error could be confusing for those switching from excel. I think it
would be helpful if OOo was to attempt to automatically apply the
value() function to text, although it is more strictly correct to
display the error.

I'll file an upstream bug on the main OOo site, if something similar
hasn't already been reported.

Re: [Bug 203540] Re: ntfs-3g crashed while copying files to an external USB drive (in ntfs_mft_record_alloc)

2008-04-23 Thread lozioric
Sorry for the late answer, I've been away and I'm catching up with a
ton of unread mail.

Ok, Acronis is known to have problem with NTFS.

Not what I'd call good news, considering that I use Acronis quite
extensively; nice to know, nevertheless.

Chkdsk is not reliable. It also has several known problems.

Is there anything you may suggest to check a NTFS partition reliably?
Other than see if ntfs-3g crashes on it, I mean... :-) In other words,
what could I do between using Acronis and accessing the same disk with
ntfs-3g to be sure that the file system is not messed up?

Thanks for your patience
Ric

[Bug 118312] Re: Critical temperature loop

2008-04-23 Thread Arthur
Getting from reaching the tipping point to shutting down the sshd in 5 seconds
and then presumably some more seconds to finish shutdown doesn't sound bad. The
whole point about the ACPI induced power down is to give the OS some time to
reduce the possibility for data corruption by cleanly shutting down. As far as
I know most current hardware has a secondary failsafe functionality which will
'hard' shutdown the computer when the temperature gets even higher.
- invalid?

[Bug 173517] Re: ubuntu gutsy 7.10 / compiz / second xscreen / no keyboard

2008-04-23 Thread marriouss

Fix: To make compiz work fine with dual head on Hardy

1. Create compiz-dual.sh script that looks like:

for screenName in :0.0 :0.1 :1.0 :1.1
do
xdpyinfo -display $screenName /dev/null 21
if [ $? -eq 0 ]
then
DISPLAY=$screenName compiz --only-current-screen
sleep 3
# DISPLAY=$screenName avant-window-navigator
fi
done

Add execute flag to this script: chmod +x compiz-dual.sh
What this script basically does is running separate compiz sessions for each
screen. The AWN start is optional (if you need AWN to start on each screen then
remove the # from the script above).
xdpyinfo command tells if a screen is available.

2. Add compiz-dual.sh to Gnome startup (System-Preferences-Sessions)

3. Disable visual efects: Appearance-Visual effects - Set to None.

I haven't found any reference to a flashplugin.so in my firefox

file/folder do you exactly mean by profile?

Maybe I should add, that I run Hardy with the latest updates installed,

Maybe it is some incompatibility with pulseaudio? As I can hear this
crackling noise every time the animation should play a sound. Starting

Just to re-iterate:

The patch to fix rev 02 chipsets was reverted because it was a
significant patch that broke the broadcom driver for BCM4312 chipsets to
name just a few. Apologies for this, note that I understand that 2.6.25
fixes your problem but to isolate the fix and backport it to 2.6.24 so
close to the Hardy release without breaking the driver for other BCM
chipsets is not possible. I am therefore marking this as Won't Fix for

I tried installing the Hardy i386 and eagle crashed there as well. So it
is not really a amd64 issue. My only choice now is to switch back to
Gutsy as it works in there.

2008-04-23 Thread dajero
I had the same problem but was able to work around it by creating the
directory /tmp/kde-my_username, where, ofcourse, you need to replace
my_username with your own username. You'll notice that k3b says Temp:
No info in the lower left corner of its window. Once you've created the
aforementioned directory and restart k3b you'll notice that k3b now
displays the correct amount of free disk space in /tmp.

[Bug 220900] [NEW] Can't change foreground colour

2008-04-23 Thread Tim Jones
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Hi,

When using either a black panel background, or a transparent panel
background with a black (or dark) desktop background, the applets
(window list, clock, gnome-main-menu, etc.) use a black foreground
colour rendering their foreground unreadable.

Adding a tab in the options to set the foreground colour, alongside the
existing tab to change the background colour, would maybe fix this?

Cheers,

Tim

[Bug 220899] [NEW] [Hardy] Wrong default image browser

2008-04-23 Thread ubuntu4fun
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xubuntu-default-settings

1. I'm using Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron RC with all the updates available
installed.

2. Packages important in this case are as follows: Xfce 4 Desktop Environment
version 4.4.2 (Xfce 4.4), GIMP 2.4.5, ristretto 0.0.18.

3. After fresh install and updating the system I wanted to view some of my
photos.
It is obvious that if someone wants to browse some pictures/photos/wallpapers
etc. the image viewer should be used to open this type of files as a default
app. Users wants most often to VIEW the image file, not to EDIT them.

4. When I tried to open a first photo (JPG) in the folder the photo was opened
with the GIMP Image Editor, not with the ristretto 0.0.18 the image viewer. I
don't know if such a bug exist also for other graphic file formats but it
definitely takes place for JPG files.

This bug is very annoying especially when you want to browse a folder
with a lot of pictures. A picture is opened with the gimp image EDITOR,
you have to wait when all the GIMP extensions are loaded and waste your
time. Every single image has to be opened manually, you can't easy open
the next image with the GIMP.

Solution:
Immediately replace default application to open images with the image VIEWER
not with the image EDITOR.

BTW:
Ristretto 0.0.18 - a fast and lightweight picture-viewer for the Xfce desktop
environment seems to be in early stage of the development. When I browsed a
folder containing 31 photos with Ristretto the memory usage reached up to 111,5
MB (!) when browsing files very fast. Is this really LIGHTWEIGHT
picture-viewer?

I decided to download GPicView 0.1.9 from GetDeb.net to take a deeper look at
the problem.

It is said at the GetDeb.net website: GPicView is a simple and fast
image viewer with low memory usage. This little program is not aimed to
be powerful or feature-rich. It's aimed to replace the default image
viewer of current desktop systems. Fast-startup, low memory usage, and
simple user interface make it a good choice for default viewer.

While browsing the same folder of photos with GPicView the average
memory usage was about 21.4 MB (started from 19 MB and sometimes reached
36 MB). How can you compare 111,5 MB with 36 MB?

I think these bugs should be fixed BEFORE the final Hardy LTS release.

Thanks.

All 4GiB of ram are detected (4028108k)

[Bug 78169] Re: Sun Java 6 Web Start Menu Entry missing -viewer command line argument

2008-04-23 Thread Marc D.
This bug has come back in sun-java6-bin 6-06-0ubuntu1! According to the
changelog:

  * javaws.desktop: Add `%u' to the Exec key, remove -viewer option.
Closes: #436645.

It looks though like the -viewer argument has been removed from the
wrong file: it was removed from the desktop shortcut
(/usr/share/applications/sun-java6-javaws.desktop), while it should have
been removed from the file association (/usr/share/application-registry
/sun-java6-web-start.applications). Now when you start webstart from
Applications-Internet-Sun Java 6 Webstart nothing happens and in the
.xsession-errors file you see the usage of javaws.

[Bug 218465] Re: Strange statistics of BOINC Manager

2008-04-23 Thread shanen (Shannon Jacobs)
Still incomplete? What more is needed?

Anyway, a couple of additional glitches I should have remembered to
report. The first one is on the edge of the statistics problem, but may
still be related to the implementation of the specific World Community
Grid project. That's a consistent slippage in the predicted completion
time on one Ubuntu machine. Essentially, it always underestimates how
long it will take by about 40%. The slippage is pretty consistent, and
doesn't seem to have any relation to what else is running, or if nothing
else has been loaded since booting. It seems clear that however BOINC is
benchmarking itself on this machine, it always gets it wrong.

The other glitch is highly widespread, and I can confirm that it affects
the BOINC Manager on Ubuntu, Windows (both XP and 2000) and whether the
client is running in English or Japanese. The problem is that the window
settings are usually lost. I would assume it is a feature, not a bug,
except that sometimes it does retain the settings. That's things like
the window size of BOINC Manager and the widths of the columns. However,
as far as I can recall, it always remembers the last selected tab
correctly.

[Bug 104013] Re: System monitor: Resources displays 99% to 100% cpu

2008-04-23 Thread Milan Krivda
This bug is not related to wrong monitoring.

In terminal run top command. After this run System Monitor and click on
Processes tab. In top command you can see CPU usage about 0 - 5%
dependent running services and applications. After this click on
Resources tab in system monitor. CPU usage jump higher due to needed
graph drawing. On the last maximize System Monitor, my dual core system
after maximizing paused playing of music for 3 seconds and CPU usage
jumped to about 60% for all cores. In fedora core this problem isnt.

[Bug 194714] Re: [Hardy] ndiswrapper does not function with 2.6.24

2008-04-23 Thread lanzen
Good (for you) so far. :)

I've tried WEP soon after this bug came about when I upgraded to Hardy
beta and was not successful. I'll have a go at it again later on this
evening when I'll be back home.

WEP was working in Feisty (no WPA). Gutsty had all types and was the
best so far as far as I go.

[Bug 162625] Re: Screen artifacts with ati radeon 9800SE

2008-04-23 Thread Bryce Harrington
I don't know if this will fix this specific issue, but I've backported a
bunch of high importance patches that upstream recommended, that fix
problems sort of like this one, so I think it would be worth the time to
test. It includes a fix for color banding issues which sounds vaguely
similar to this problem. Anyway, please try this .deb and report what
you find:

http://people.ubuntu.com/~bryce/Testing/ati/

If we can determine that the patches in this deb fix this bug, they may
be candidates for backporting to Hardy.
