[Bug 226405] [NEW] Missing support for upsmon only configuration (slave)

2008-05-04 Thread weltall
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nut

There should be a package to support slave only devices.
As of now the package takes for granted that the computer using upsmon is also
the one with the ups connected (so the scripts doesn't work if upsd and
upsdrvctl aren't configured) while this could be not the case (in my case it's
connected to a server using a low amount of power which dispatches informations
about the ups status to other connected computers).
So there is no way to get upsmon to auto start without doing big editing of the
init.d script (or making them from scratch which is maybe even easier).

ubuntu 8.04 hardy heron
package 2.2.1-2.1ubuntu7

A secondary package with only upsmon would be the ideal but if not
possible / not willing to do it making the init script launch upsmon
even if upsd / upsdrvctl failed would be good enough (at least for me)

thanks :)

I have the same issue as Shwan as well on Hardy

I can copy files from a Maxtor Shared Storage drive mounted wiith Samba,
but I cannot copy folders. I get the exact same permission denied
error in the Nautilus window.

I have a laptop with Gusty and don't have this issue.

As a temporary fix you can simply symlink to libWand.so.10 and
libMagick.so.10, nothing dramatic changed between imagemagick 9 and 10.

sudo ln -s libWand.so.10 libWand.so.9
sudo ln -s libMagick.so.10 libMagick.so.9

[Bug 214556] Re: [Hardy] Can't share files

2008-05-04 Thread nottRobin
I found this post: http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/ubuntu-help/118877
-samba-hardy.html - and when I did what they did and replaced my
smb.conf with a skeleton one it did work properly, which suggests that
there is an error in the way that Ubuntu handles the Samba conf file.

Just to clarigy, I haven't touched anything to do with Samba until I had
this error. I'm running the 64 bit version of hardy, dunno if that makes
a difference.

[Bug 226208] Re: Transmission doesn't remember dialog sizes

2008-05-04 Thread Jo-Erlend Schinstad
Thank you for pointing that out. I do try to be explicit when I
communicate, but in this instance, I wasn't. Indeed, I did mean every
time, and not once in a while. Where I wrote from time to time, I
should've written from dialog to dialog.

I am also uncertain regarding whether or not the dialogs sizes should be
remembered for each torrent or globally. On one hand, the file names
will be of different length in different torrents. On the other hand,
continuously changing dialog sizes might be slightly confusing. The
users screen size will be fairly static, so the biggest dialog will
almost always fit. Without looking at the code, I'm guessing it'd
probably be a lot less work to use a global and persistent dialog size
for all dialogs, but I would recommend looking into the alternative as
well.

[Bug 199707] Re: trashcan has disappear from panel

2008-05-04 Thread Del Griffith
Confirmed in 8.04.

A friend who uses my system under a non-sudo account I created for them
asked me why their trashcan in the taskbar bottom-right kept
disappearing. Where's the trashcan? I looked around and I can't see
it? I thought it was because I had changed the theme for him from the
default human theme to a blue one (I forget the name of the theme I
changed it to), and I had seen the trash icon there when I set it up for
him. I thought he was crazy, so I logged into his account with him
there, and sure enough, it was gone. I googled for info and saw this
page, my friend began dancing in celebration. It turns out he wasn't
crazy after all, but I had never experienced this strange bug before
now.

This does not occur for me on my sudo-enabled user account, the first
account created during the Ubuntu install. It does occur for my friend
when he logs into his non-sudo account. He uses a different theme, one
of the others offered in the default install, it gives him a blue
trashcan and a green running stick figure Quit icon in the top right
corner of the screen. He has no other problems other than this
disappearing trash icon. I enabled the Trash icon on his desktop and he
is satisfied, he hasn't said a word about the missing trash icon even
though it still is missing when he logs into his account.

I'm not sure at what point the trash icon on the bottom panel started
disappearing for him.

[Bug 203552] Re: Suspend/hibernate does not work with HP Pavilion dv9340ea

2008-05-04 Thread Corey Seliger
I have an HP Pavilion DV9000z (AMD) and am seeing similar issues.
However, rather than focusing on the video controller, I want to propose
another culprit: the Broadcom Wireless Network Controller

A couple notes on the system:

* Dual Core AMD Turion 64
* nVidia GeForce GO 7600
* Broadcom BCM4312
* 1GB RAM

Basic OS Info (more to come later as attachments):

Linux feathers 2.6.24-16-generic #1 SMP Thu Apr 10 12:47:45 UTC 2008
x86_64 GNU/LinuxDISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu

DISTRIB_RELEASE=8.04
DISTRIB_CODENAME=hardy
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION=Ubuntu 8.04

So back to my proposal. For me on my system, if I shut down all applications
that make outgoing connections (think Pidgin, Thunderbird, Firefox [if
connections are still in a TIME_WAIT state], etc.) are running and have
connections to the network made, the system hangs on any hibernate attempts.

The test I did to gain relative confidence in this theory was simple. I
ran netstat prior to each hibernate attempt like so:

netstat --inet --inet6

That dumps out all of the current live connections for IPv4 and IPv6 (if
there were any). Having services LISTENing does not seem to make a
difference as I have sshd running and was still able to hibernate so
long as there were no live connections at the time of hibernation. So
the gist is that if there are no entries in the netstat output, the
machine typically will hibernate for me.

I am using the b43 driver as it seems to be more stable now in the
general release of Hardy. Also since this is a Pavilion, I am also no
longer using the funky kernel workarounds (noapic, irqpoll, noirqdebug)
to keep the system from hanging as it appears those patches to clean
that up finally made it into the kernel. Prior to that, i was using
those workarounds as well as ndiswrapper to get WIFI and let's just say
that all bets were off on hibernation, etc.

As far as other testing, I have brought the machine into single user
mode and have tried to manually suspend and hibernate the machine. Both
work great except for suspend. When I resume, I have to issue vbetool
dpms on to turn the backlight back on...

This might be an offshoot into another bug if it proves to be separate
issue. It may already even be a bug that I have yet to find. But in any
case, I would love to see others try to see if this has any effect on
their hibernation outcomes.

[Bug 80900] Re: problems resolving fully qualified domain names on Kubuntu feisty

2008-05-04 Thread Trent Lloyd
Marking as confirmed. This is a known issue.

Unfortunately the .local detection script does not work if no root
local. domain exists. A possible fix may be to have libnss-mdns not
lookup .local hosts with more than 2 labels i.e. lookup test.local but
not machine.test.local

Seems all MS networks always will use host-names in the form of
host.DOMAIN.local correct? Is there any host.local case?

[Bug 226377] [NEW] Screen Saver Preferences - Insufficient Settings

2008-05-04 Thread Elia Vecellio
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

Ubuntu 8.04 (i386) Final. gnome-screensaver 2.22.2-0ubuntu1
The default Screen Saver preferences window in Ubuntu has almost no options
available. One can choose the screensaver to use, but can make no
customizations at all for that screen.

For some screensavers, this is minor, because it might just be to choose
the number of objects on screen, or the speed of the screensaver.
However, with some screensavers, slideshow ones in particular (eg
GLSlideshow) having access to customizations is essential. Most
critically the user needs to be able tell the screensaver the location
of the images to be shown. Additionally the user might want to adjust
the other parameters. GLSlideshow, for example, has quite a few
parameters available, but they cannot be accessed with gnome-
screensaver. Some people manually search and edit the config files -
this is what keeps Ubuntu as a geeky OS rather than a sleek OS for human
beings. I found that installing the Xscreensaver 5.04 package allowed me
access to most of the parameters. Xscreensaver is not perfect, but it is
much better than gnome-screensaver. If the latter does not improve, it
should not remain as the default screensaver package.

[Bug 213658] Re: hardy digikam Olympus failed to connect

2008-05-04 Thread Spot
even though this may be a duplicate bug to
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libgphoto2/+bug/205417
That bug is apparently fixed with the upgrade of libgphoto2.
While this may be the case for many cameras it is is not the case
for all. When I found the apparently more specific bug report I added a link
from that list to this to show that there where still issues.
IMHO get the latest updates and if that doesn't fix it add it to 205417
That is if it is still active, not sure how it works here.
Thanks all

This sucks that this bug has not been updated as of yet. You would
think this would be top priority. I'll exclude additional reasonings to
avoid being redundant but it should appear as though this would be a
necessity not a want or wish list. I really would like to see the growth
of ubuntu but this won't happen by restricting/removing tools needed to
properly configure ill configs.

[Bug 198220] Re: [hardy] No logout possible in KDE4

2008-05-04 Thread PJSingh5000

The XDM_AUTH_MASK solution does not work for me (AMD64, Kubuntu Hardy x64
KDE3, ATI Radeon X1650 Pro using fglrx driver). I also have Compiz enabled.

I usually get a blank screen when I try to logout. Shutdown or restart
are fine. Sometimes, if logout is successful, I will experience a
problem logging in again... I **correctly** enter my password at the
login screen, then it looks like I am getting logged-in because the
screen goes blank for a second, but then the login screen suddenly
reappears. So I have to RE-enter the password to try a second time.
Sometimes login succeeds at the second try, but I eventually get the
black screen if I try to login and out a few times.

[Bug 161745] Re: Why isn't thinkpad-brightness-down.sh used for Lenovo thinkpads?

2008-05-04 Thread Aseem
So what is the option for users without gnome-power-manager or its KDE
counterpart? Brightness seems to work fine on my T61 with the regular
hardy desktop.

On a T60 with slim+openbox, I have to resort to either PJ's tip about
/proc/acpi/ibm/cmos or use echo nn
/proc/acpi/video/VID/LCD0/brightness. Or I can load the thinkpad_acpi
module with brightness_enable=1 and echo values to
/proc/acpi/ibm/brightness.

I have a custom init script that sets the IBM hotkey mask so that acpi
registers the IBM hotkeys when the brightness buttons are pressed.
hotkey-setup does not appear to do that for me.

This is a problem in general for all the Fn+... keys. The volume keys
work fine, however other than the Thinklight nothing seems to work out
of the box for me.

My setup:
hardy command line install with X, openbox and slim.

I am not sure if this is a bug or a lack of configuration on my part,
but fixes would be great.

Thanks

I can confirm this for kernel 2.6.24-16.

I attempted to boot the Hardy liveCD, but it would not load the kernel.
The error was: '/sbin/modprobe' abnormal exit, followed by the BusyBox
shell.

I successfully installed linux using Gutsy, then upgraded using do-
release-upgrade. I can boot this with no problem using the 2.6.22
kernel, but the 2.6.24 kernel fails as described by the original poster.

I double-checked. My /etc/fstab is in UUIDs, and grub's menu.lst
matches.

Re: [Bug 89362] Re: system locking up (forcing a hard reboot)

2008-05-04 Thread Lau
Gareth,

Thanks for the quick following up. I have to moderate my earlier
complain about kernel 2.6.
Doing further tests, I noticed that firefox was able to cause trouble
(wild CPU and disk usage
and I am becoming a little quick to force a computer shutdown because
of the freezes).

Nevertheless, I still experience freezes.

Here are the data:

1- uname
Linux localhost 2.6.24-16-generic #1 SMP Thu Apr 10 13:23:42 UTC 2008
i686 GNU/Linux
2- dmesg
(see file attached - done right after a freeze-forced reboot; doing
dmesg during a freeze does not let me save the output
anywhere on the disk, neither on a thumbdrive, and email software is
frozen - all IO on storage
seem unavailable)
3- lspci (see file attached)
4- dmidecode (see file attached)

Notes: I have found nothing that seemed relevant in either syslog,
kern.log, or messages.
log/messages says
ata2.00: ATAPI: TSSTcorpCD/DVDW TS-L632D, SC04, max UDMA/33
about the optical drive.

All the above was done while booting with the kernel parameter
combined_mode=libata

2008/4/23 Gareth Fitzworthington [EMAIL PROTECTED]:
 Lau,
OK we've checked some likely causes with no success. I think we need to move
this issue along to the Kernel Team.

However, we need to re-establish the baseline data for this bug report since
the problem was originally reported under Feisty and you now appear to be
using Hardy. The Kernel Team will need this.
Can you supply the following information for your present system [Hardy]:
  1. Please include the output of the command uname -a in your next response.
  2. Please run the command dmesg dmesg.log which includes the freeze
point and attach the resulting file dmesg.log to this bug report.
  3. Please run the command sudo lspci -vvnn lspci-vvnn.log and attach the
resulting file lspci-vvnn.log to this bug report.
  4. Please run the command sudo dmidecode dmidecode.txt and attach the
resulting file dmidecode.txt to this bug report.
  Thanks.

Note1: Point (2) above should include the freeze point. If you can get it to
freeze again and then reboot the dmesg should contain the freeze point.
Note2: Also, after a freeze reboot can you check syslog and kernel.log to
see if anything useful is recorded such as a kernel oops.
Note3: Your TSSTcorpCD/DVDW TS-L632D optical drive still concerns me. Can
you check report the present firmware version [AS05, SC03, SC04, something
else?] just to put our minds at ease.

  Thanks again.

Incorrect Output:

Symptoms:
dmesg output exact match of Bug #93573 in linux-source-2.6.20 (Ubuntu)

Workaround:
Similar to those documented in Bug #93573 in linux-source-2.6.20 (Ubuntu)

Download and recompile acx100_usb driver from
http://acx100.sourceforge.net/

Recompile instructions from http://acx100.sourceforge.net/wiki/ACX
 # cd /usr/src
 # mkdir acx-20080210

 # wget http://downloads.sourceforge.net/acx100/acx-20080210.tar.bz2
 # tar xjvf acx-20080210.tar.bz2
 # cd acx-20080210

 # make -C /lib/modules/`uname -r`/build M=`pwd`

 # make -C /lib/modules/`uname -r`/build M=`pwd` modules_install

By default, the acx driver searches for firmware named tiacx100usbc0D
in /lib/firmware, so do the following to link to the available firmware

 # cd /lib/firmware
 # ln -s `uname -r`/acx/1.0.9/tiacx100usb tiacx100usbc0D

Reboot and test. iwconfig output should now be correct!

[Bug 208737] Re: [hardy] unlock button not working

2008-05-04 Thread Eamonn Sullivan
I have a PC with the exact same problem and similar xsession-errors
(attaching a copy). Plus, when I try to run many of the administration
programs I get a dialog box that says:

The configuration could not be loaded

You are not allowed to access the system configuration

I'm correctly listed in sudoers and can access any administration
program via the terminal. update-manager works and so does synaptic, but
programs such as Users and Groups and Time and Date fail with the above
message. This is a real problem on some systems. I updated from Gutsy.

[Bug 53700] Re: edgy alt installer IDE drive as SCSI1 (0,0,0)

2008-05-04 Thread Chris J Cheney
Kubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron) x86 alternate install CD

ASUS CUV4X mobo
Adaptec AHA-2940 SCSI card
Maxtor 90845D4 (on IDE channel 0 as master) is reported incorrectly by the
installer as SCSI1 (should be IDE1)
Seagate ST380215A (on IDE channel 0 as slave) is reported incorrectly by the
installer as SCSI2 (should be IDE2)
Quantum 1050pD (first and only SCSI drive) is reported as SCSI3 (should be

very disconcerting for the naive user - for Linux to be ready for the
desktop such details need to be got right!

I implemented the change as described in bug report 118605.
To my horror, my system now freezes consistently.
However, I removed the ATI driver, and all my problems seem to be gone now.

[Bug 213347] Re: firefox 3 beta 5 startup takes 10 min, browser (not internet) works on an unusable speed freezes often (firefox 2 works fine)

2008-05-04 Thread Tamara
For me firefox 3 beta 5 starts up at a decent speed, but occasionally
takes over the processor and memory. No specific pattern and it would be
impossible to collect data because the only way to stop this is to kill
X. Running top before it became too crazy showed that it was firefox and
was taking about 60% of memory and 80% of CPU.

[Bug 204624] Re: CAPI not working correctly on Ubuntu hardy (8.04)

2008-05-04 Thread mveltre
I can recreate the issue on two different PCs with two different AVM
Fritzcard PCI. Some other users like in the german ubuntu forum do have
also this problems. See http://forum.ubuntuusers.de/topic/168953/
(german). Google fills up with the reports also. If possible, I would
set the importance to high or at least middle as a lot of users which
use ISDN landlines to connect have these problems.

In the meantime it could also (sometimes) help to download
http://rapidshare.de/files/39255014/AVM-Fritz.tar.gz.html

and use
$cd /usr/src/AVM-Fritz/fcpci-3.11.07
$sudo make
$sudo make install
$sudo depmod -a
$modprobe -l | grep fcpci

to install the module. On my one of my PCs i had to remove linux-
restriced-modules at all to get it working (now other issues are coming
up with that...). Solution was provided by the user DeJe in the german
ubuntuusers forum.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make

didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read How
to report bugs effectively
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).

In particular, if you could provide examples of the websites you have
trouble with, and exactly what issues you are having, it would be very
helpful.

Thanks!

[Bug 226280] Re: Firefox crash when loading svg image

2008-05-04 Thread Jean-Baptiste Lallement
cairo_path_extents was added in cairo 1.5.8. So your system library is
the right version (1.6.0 ) BUT you've another version of Cairo in
/usr/local/lib which is probably too old.

This may be the culprit.

You can either uninstall the /usr/local/lib if you don't use it version
or upgrade your locale library or set LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib to be
certain that the one in /usr/lib is loaded first. run ldd
/usr/lib/xulrunner-1.9b5/libxul.so | grep cairo and be sure that the
library is the one in /usr/lib.

Please confirm before closing this report.

Regards,

are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are
having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if
you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs .

SOLUTION: OpenOffice has a slightly different syntax for the IF clause, you
should have written something like this instead:
=IF(sheet.cell = 0; ; sheet.cell)

(Note, that I'm not using apostrophe (') and use ; instead of comma)

Likewise, adding that line in to /etc/rc.local on an Asus PC701 (eee)
allowed me to boot from a 4G USB stick, and then in to Gnome. Thanks to
 all.
