[Bug 134706] Re: displayconfig-gtk: Test fails (scrambled screen) even with default settings

2008-05-10 Thread Bryce Harrington
Thank you for reporting this bug and for your efforts to make Ubuntu
better. As Xorg has improved this past year, an unfortunate side effect
of these improvements is that it has rendered several design assumptions
in displayconfig-gtk obsolete. So, starting with Hardy we are no longer
putting displayconfig-gtk forth as a primary configuration tool, and are
putting our development focus into the Screen Resolution applet. As a
result, we do not plan to fix this bug and thus are closing it.

For more background on this change, please see this page:

[Bug 137541] Re: XFCE crash when running with 2 panels

2008-05-10 Thread Bryce Harrington
Thank you for reporting this bug and for your efforts to make Ubuntu
better. As Xorg has improved this past year, an unfortunate side effect
of these improvements is that it has rendered several design assumptions
in displayconfig-gtk obsolete. So, starting with Hardy we are no longer
putting displayconfig-gtk forth as a primary configuration tool, and are
putting our development focus into the Screen Resolution applet. As a
result, we do not plan to fix this bug and thus are closing it.

For more background on this change, please see this page:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/DisplayConfigGtk

Could you paste the output of

Could you restart the system and go to recovery mode (don't run apt).
Choose that you want a terminal and then run the following:

ls -ra /lib/modules/2.6.24-17-generic/volatile ls-volatile.txt
sudo modprobe --ignore-install nvidia_new modprobe.output 21
sudo chown $USER modprobe.output ls-volatile.txt

[Bug 228910] [NEW] Streamline release upgrades, text mode upgrading

2008-05-10 Thread Prateek Karandikar
Public bug reported:

There seem to be many mysteries about the process of release upgrading,
which the official documentation should clear up. Is do-release-upgrade
ok for desktops? http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/upgrading and
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HardyUpgrades are quiet on this
matter. Why is do-release-upgrade a separate, singular command, instead
of being integrated with apt-get, aptitude, etc? It doesn't have a man
page, which adds to the mystery. Where are users expected to find out
documentation about it?

I do all my package management from the terminal, and would like to do
the same for release upgrade. It can be done in a screen session, it can
be easily done over ssh, it is not affected by X freezes/restarts, etc.
Besides, it feels weird that a GUI is _required_ for upgrading a desktop
system. Is it? The documentation is quiet on this matter too.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UpdateManagerFaq mentions some interesting
stuff. Some of that should be explained properly in the official
documentation, including the mysterious references to a release
upgrader.

Suggestions:
1) The documentation should explain various aspects of the release upgrade
process, including how desktops and servers are different (or how they are not).
2) Release upgrading should be integrated into the existing apt tools, with
graphical and text interfaces. aptitude release-upgrade, perhaps?

2008-05-10 Thread Sam Stern
I'm sorry but I wiped the drive after the in place upgrade failed. The
/var/log/dist-upgrade dir is empty. Since the home directories were
mostly retained I thinkt he user Samstern had some settings that
caused this bug to be automatically filed.

I used apt-get to swap the drivers around btw - I do not use the package
manager as syntaptic is anoying and add/remove is too simplistic.

The core problem (not related to this dist upgrade bug) is at:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/173418

let me know if I can provide more information about the past 7.10 setup
that created this bug.

I think your best bet is to file a new bug report and post a link to your new

[Bug 173418] Re: [Hardy] NVIDIA cards using vesa driver and low screen resolutions on livecd

2008-05-10 Thread Sam Stern
Hi All,

I just ran into this bug as well in ubuntu 8.04

lspci -nn |grep VGA
01:05.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: nVidia Corporation NV28GL [Quadro4
980 XGL] [10de:0288] (rev a1)

no amount of wrangling with nv, nvidia-glx, nvidia-glx-new, or nvidia-
glx-legacy would convince the system not to load the vesa driver. In
the end I worked around this by downloading the linux32 driver from
nvidia after removing all nvidia packages but the kernel module (trying
to remove nvidia-kernel-common yields a frightening series of
suggestions from apt-get).

The driver I downloaded, that worked, was:

NVIDIA-Linux-x86-96.43.05-pkg1.run

[Bug 223768] Re: Evince unable to open external links from pdf files

Well, I've found a cause of my bug.

Searching in GConf for b4 showed that
/desktop/gnome/url-handlers/chrome/command
/desktop/gnome/url-handlers/https/command
/desktop/gnome/url-handlers/http/command
/desktop/gnome/url-handlers/ftp/command
for some strange reason were all set to

Changing them to use

2008-05-10 Thread Andy Botting
I'm using a Mac Mini with the Intel 945GM chipset, and using XBMC on
Hardy, I see some pretty nasty video tearing. I found that XBMC has a
Vsync to Black option, which fixes the tearing, but after about 5-10
minutes, the whole screen goes one colour, and to get X working again, I
need to reboot.

I'm using xserver-xorg-video-intel version 2:2.2.1-1ubuntu12.

[Bug 228599] Re: OpenOffice.org default font replaced - unable to change

2008-05-10 Thread PsychoKim
Hi Chris. - Sorry for mailing you, but I solved the log-in-problem only
a few minutes after sending the mail -.-

So here I attach the font y2k.ttf.
But the next problem is, if i remove y2k.ttf from the .fonts folder,
OpenOffice.org produces the same bug with Echo2.ttf, if this font is removed,
some other font is used. (Kind of a vicious circle)
So I attach the Echo2.ttf font, too.

Hope you can find a workaround.
Thanks,
Kim

[Bug 204696] Re: network-manager-openvpn not working

2008-05-10 Thread Aaron Kurtz
I had exactly the same experience - although network manager restarted
after the installation of network-manager-openvpn, until I actually
restarted my machine any attempt to connect through the vpn failed.

After restarting, it connected properly, and this time actually
displayed something in the NM applet when I tried to connect. I suspect
something other than Network Manager needs to be restarted.

[Bug 186382] Re: [nvidia 169.xx] gtk window decorator somtimes draws decoration ugly or not at all

2008-05-10 Thread markb
I installed the packages from hardy-proposed using aptitude but because
I had set up the libwfb.so link manually I don't think the packages
corrected it? Anyhow, I set them by hand as above. Note that I have no
/usr/lib/nvidia/libwfb* files at all (I did not touch anything in that
dir), so surely I need to create/link libwfb.so somewhere? You mean just
delete that file/link and all will be ok?

You seem to have made this bug report public, but #194835 is not

[Bug 228913] [NEW] xorg.conf sync out of range in mostly all full screen mode games.....

When running mostly any fullscreen games from repos I get a lot of Sync

[Bug 228399] Re: Closing lid makes X hang

2008-05-10 Thread Bryce Harrington
Erk, ok thanks for letting me know swiftly. I've notified upstream to
revert the change.

The hardware change sounds pretty significant - from your diff it
appears the entire display has changed. Putting your old backed up os
on top of this hardware probably resulted in an incorrect config file
being used.

Please refer to wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Reporting for information of what
files to include.

[Bug 221494] Re: package update-manager 1:0.87.24 failed to install/upgrade: ErrorMessage: SystemError in cache.commit(): E:Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1), E:Sub-process /usr/bin

2008-05-10 Thread Alberto Milone
As I suggest in the FAQ, you should have uninstalled the driver from
Envy before you upgraded.

Type:
sudo envy --uninstall-all

The bug might affect the old envy since envyng-core works only on hardy.

that's not enough, since you've done things by hand. After removing the
link you need to reinstall xserver-xorg-core to get the real libwfb.so
from that package.
